3 THE BOYLAN CURRENT 3 the Boylan Halls Paul Vogrinc will be teaching Morality and Scripture to juniors. He received his Bachelors of Science from the Franciscan University of Steubenville, Ohio. He has many unique life experiences, including a recent trip to Israel which he feels inspired him to pursue teaching. He said, This was an awesome experience for me. It was like reading the fifth Gospel. It deepened my faith so much and so many things were connected. I fell in love with Christ and His Church all over again. It was like Jesus was showing me around his hometown. This really inspired me to pursue teaching so others can know Christ in a real way, as I got to know him in a real way in the last few years and especially in Israel. Mr. Vogrinc was also in a band for two summers that did music for retreats all over the world. This will be his first teaching job, but he has spent the last four years traveling around the country speaking to groups of teens about Christ. 4 Coaches, Athletes look to Coach: Dan Appino 1. Who are some of the returning players who will take a leadership role or on whom you are depending or will probably be standouts in you sport? Captains Dan Dansdill, Patrick Appino Seniors Colin McGuire, Nick Hauge, Austin Morman, Nate Hilby, Michael Edwards As the only players returning with starting experience from last year s championship squad, these young men will need to be major contributors in What are your prospects for the coming season? We will need to replace 18 starters from 2006(graduated). However, we do have quality senior and junior athletes who can take up the slack caused by graduation. We expect to compete for a NIC-10 championship this season. 3. Who are the other conference teams you expect the most competition from? Hononegah returns many starters from a 5-4 team last year. Belvidere has a strong senior class returning from and 8-2 squad in Guilford returns 7 starters on defense from a team that finished third in the NIC-9 last year. Freeport and Harlem have very talented underclassmen in their programs. 4. What kind of a turnout do you anticipate in terms of numbers of team members? Our varsity squad has 55 players. Our sophomore team had 45 players draw gear. The freshman squad is on of the largest in school history with 70 players reporting for equipment issue. 5. What else would you like to express? The players and coaches greatly appreciate the support of our students and faculty. We hope that as many as possible can jam our stands for our first home game, August 24 th, with our in-city rival, Guilford. Girls Swimming Coach: Stephanie McGuire, Shannon Ring, Christy Kowalski 1. Who are some of the returning players who will take a leadership role or on whom you are depending or will probably be standouts in your sport? Most of our varsity squad is returning for the 2007 season. Rachel Bohn- Finished 1 st at the 2006 Varsity Conference Meet in the 200 and 500 Freestyle. She was part of the 1 st place 400 Freestyle Relay. She was chosen for the 1 st Team NIC-9 All Conference for the 200 Freestyle. As a captain during the 2006 season, Rachel showed strong leadership skills in and out of the pool. Grace Cormier: Finished 2 nd at the 2006 Varsity Conference Meet in the 200 Free and 3 rd in the 100 Backstroke. She was part of the 1 st Team NIC-9 All Conference for the 400 Freestyle Relay. Other Returning 1 st Team NIC-9 All Conference Swimmers and Divers include Diana Weissbeck (diving), and Therese Bermingham (200 Freestyle Relay). Diana Weissbeck was also a state qualifier in diving for the 2006 season. Jenna Budde was chosen as NIC-9 All Conference Honorable Mention for the 2006 season. Jenna, Rachel, Therese, and Diana will lead the team as the 2007 captains. THE BOYLAN CURRENT 4 2. What are your prospects for the coming season? The 2007 season should prove to be an exciting one. As we return to the pool as defending Varsity Conference Champions, the team is ready to work hard and defend the NIC-9 Championship. We will continue the have strong competition from both Guilford and Freeport, but with most of our 2006 Varsity Swimmers returning, 2007 should prove to be a successful year.
5 THE BOYLAN CURRENT 5 Exciting Fall Season Coach: Mike VanSistine The 2007 season began with 27 golfers out for the team. After a three day qualifying tournament the team was set at 19. Our expectations are high and the team should be very competitive both in the NIC-10 and tournament play. Our team will be led by Sophomore Corey Konieczki who as a freshman tied for Conference medalist and was Regional medalist by winning in a playoff. He started out the season by shooting near even par over 3 rounds of qualifying at Sandy Hollow. Harlem will be our biggest competition in the NIC-10 with most of their key players returning from last year s team who came very close to beating us in the Boylan Invite in 2006 and who also make it through Regionals. Coach: Ted Holm 1. Who are some of the returning players who will take a leadership role or on whom you are depending or will probably be standouts in your sport? Boys Will O Malley JR, Seth Palmer SR Girls Teresa Popp SR, Sally Leaf 2. What are your prospects for the coming season? We hope to continue where we left off last year Top 3 with girls, and improve with the boys 3. Who are the other conference teams you expect the most competition from? Hononegah-boys and girls, Guilford-boys and girls, Auburn - boys and girls 4. What kind of a turnout do you anticipate in terms of numbers of team members? We should have 50 plus boys and girls 5. What else would you like to express? We have good leadership with both the girls and boys this should carry over to our younger runners. Coach: David Bachta 1. Who are some of the returning players who will take a leadership role or on whom you are depending or will probably be standouts in your sport? Bart Bogusewski: 3 year varsity player. Coming into the season injured. Hoping to have him back in 3-4 weeks. Rocco Taglia: Great sophomore season. Only one of 3 returning starters. Sweeper. DJ Kling: Other returning starter. Tough speedy defender. 2. What are your prospects for the coming season? We bring back a mix of returning and newcomers. But only three returning starters. The season will depend on how much work the players put in, during the off season. 3. Who are the other conference teams you expect the most competition from? Guilford: Always our toughest competition. Bring back a core group of seniors. Hononegah: Much more experienced group. Great coaching.

8 Letter from the Editor Welcome back! I hope everyone had a fun and relaxing summer vacation. As you can probably tell just by looking at the front page of your paper, a lot of changes have been made over the summer months. Our new name, The Boylan Current, is one that we feel better embodies the spirit of our publication. Not only does it mean the information you will be reading will be recent and relevant, but the paper will also show the movement of the Boylan student body as well. We also have our own office/ workplace. Located at the top of the main staircase, you will be able to constantly see the bustle of our busy staff through the four large windows which comprise one of our walls. We are really excited to start a new year, and form a new staff as well. We will be having a meeting for all of those interested in joining our staff on Tuesday the 28 th at 7:30 am. Feel free to bring any questions or suggestions you might have to this meeting. We will tell you all about how we run things, what kind of time commitment you should expect, and lots of information you might want to know about joining our staff. We need people with all types of skills and areas of expertise (especially photography!). We would like to have a full-time photography staff this year to ensure we get great photos of everything in order to enhance the overall quality of the paper. I look forward to seeing many of you at the meeting! Sincerely, Kaylen B.
