10 Sun Devil Success Arizona State posted a school record fourth-place finish in the final Directors Cup standings. The Cup standings are used to determine the top overall collegiate athletics programs in the nation. In 2008 the ASU men s and women s indoor track and field teams both came away with national titles. In the outdoor competition they were nearly as successful as both squads came away with top-10 finishes -- women (second) and men (sixth). Led by the Pac-10 Coach (Pat Murphy) and Player of the Year (Brett Wallace), the ASU baseball team won the Pac-10 for the second consecutive year and earned a No. 3 national seed in the postseason. A third straight Women s College World Series appearance for ASU was capped off by capturing the program s first ever NCAA title. Led by NCAA individual champion Azahara Munoz, the ASU women s golf team finished fifth at the NCAA championships, ASU s fourth top 10 finish in the last five years. Munoz became the ninth Sun Devil women s golfer to capture an NCAA individual title. Under first-year head coach Dennis Erickson the Sun Devil football team finished 10-3, earned a share of the Pac-10 title and a berth in the Holiday Bowl. 8 A r i z o n a St a t e Un i v e r s i t y W o m e n ' s So c c e r 2008

For ASU, its was the second time in a 16-month span that it faced Mexico after drawing a record 2,136 fans for its contest against Mexico on October 1, Despite unseasonably cool temperatures, nearly 1,300 fans came out on this occasion to see Mexico come away with a 3-0 win. ASU s game against Mexico was the finale of a three-game weekend hosted by the Sun Devils, which also included UCLA vs. Mexico and ASU vs. UCLA. ASU s most recent game against Mexico marked the third time that it faced a team from a higher organization as it played the San Diego Spirit of the Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) on March 29, A r i z o n a St a t e Un i v e r s i t y W o m e n ' s So c c e r

17 Academics The Office for Student-Athlete Development and APS Learning Center provide services, programming, and guidance to Arizona State s approximately 500 student-athletes that allow them to develop and experience academic success and critical life skills. Culminating in graduation, all support services are student-athlete centered and include orientation programs, academic planning toward graduation, registration, tutoring, study skills, study hall, the use of the ICA computer site and laptop computers, and preparation for life beyond college whether it is in their sport or another chosen career path. Stephanie Viola, the academic coordinator/coach for women s soccer, works with these young women throughout their college careers. From the time they sign to the day they graduate, Viola oversees and monitors all academic activities, helping student-athletes identify what they need to be competitive and successful in the classroom, improving study skills and habits, identifying and addressing academic concerns, selecting a major, balancing time demands, making degree progress and utilizing career development opportunities. In recent years, the members of the Arizona State University soccer program have been the walking definition of a 'student-athlete.' In the last five years, the Sun Devils have held the top team grade-point average (GPA) of any varsity team on campus. In fact, in the most recent semester completed (Spring 2008), the team had a cumulative GPA of "The academic success of our athletes has been incredible," says ASU head coach Kevin Boyd. "There is a reason there are very good students here and I think it goes back to the care given to our student-athletes. What they get out of our academic center is incredible. Our academic coaches do an outstanding job of assisting the individual needs of every player to help them reach their academic goals." Last season, 11 members from the soccer team earned academic accolades from the Pac-10 Conference, including Kyleyn Felts, Liz Harkin and Alissa Oldenkamp, who all earned first-team honors. Felts and Oldenkamp also both earned First Team Academic All-America honors from ESPN The Magazine and NSCAA/adidas, respectively. Any student-athlete needing additional help in a specific subject may request a tutor. Tutors assist student-athletes on an individual or group basis, as well as provide study cluster groups throughout each semester. A student-athlete needing additional help with general study skills and habits, organization, and scheduling can request to meet with a mentor in addition to their academic coach. Success in the classroom often starts the summer prior to the student-athletes first full semester on campus. The Summer School Enrichment Program allows The academic computer lab, which is located inside the APS Learning Center, is one of many resources student-athletes like junior soccer player Liz Harkin have available to assist them. student-athletes to attend summer school on scholarship, helping student-athletes move toward the goal of graduation in a shorter period of time. Throughout their academic careers, ASU student-athletes are expected to take responsibility for their education and developing their career goals. This includes realizing that dedication and self-discipline are as important in the classroom and their careers as on the playing field. Maintaining a positive attitude toward academics and the privilege of being an ASU student-athlete is emphasized, as well as developing the desire to succeed semester after semester. ASU recruits student-athletes with academic and athletic goals and the personal discipline to pursue and achieve them in the "student-athlete centered" environment of ASU Athletics. Scholar Baller Program ASU's Office of Student-Athlete Development (OSAD) is based on the premise that student-athletes must be challenged to Compete in the classroom and in life, with Passion and Character (CPC), just as they do on the field and in the weight room. To recognize those student-athletes who excel outside of their respective competitive arenas, OSAD introduced the Scholar Baller Program. A Scholar Baller is a student-athlete who succeeds academically and socially, and who accepts the challenge of balancing textbooks with playbooks. Student-athletes at ASU who maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher are distinguished with a patch that is placed on their uniform. 18 2008 Outlook Then Kevin Boyd arrived on the scene a year ago he quickly made it clear to his new squad that regardless of what challenges it faced that it would never shift the focus of its annual goal which is making the playoffs and competing for a national championship. It didn t matter that the challenges included having to adapt to a new system or that 19 of the 26 players on the team were freshmen or sophomores. It didn t matter that it was going to have to find a way to navigate through one of the toughest schedules in the country or compete in a conference which produced two of the four teams competing for the College Cup, including the eventual national champion. Yes, the challenges were aplenty. Yet there were the Sun Devils watching and waiting to hear their name called on the day the NCAA announced which 64 teams would receive invites into its tournament. The team was there because it found a way to win its most contests since Among its 10 wins was an upset of No. 25 Washington State. Its lone tie (0-0) came to No. 5 Stanford, a game which saw the Sun Devils nearly pull off one of the biggest upsets of the season. ASU would barely miss out on a berth to soccer s second season. However what many would have seen as an ending, Boyd and the rest of the team saw as a beginning. I think as much as anything else it was an educational moment, said Boyd. We talked about the games that contributed to us not making it. Just looking at those games they were shaking their heads and saying, We should have won that one. I think after that experience our returners understood that [making the playoffs] was possible. That was the first thing they needed to do. Not unlike any other year the Sun Devils will once again be faced with obstacles that stand in the way of their goals. However, as Boyd stresses, it's all about how those obstacles are approached. "A lot of times when you have the greatest challenges is when you have the greatest successes as well and so we could have one of those types of years. "When people have asked me about last season I've said I thought we maximized what we had last year and as a coach if you can maximize what you have then your team has done well and your program is doing great. If we can maximize what we have this year then I will be quite satisfied as well and that is really the key for our team right now." Goalkeepers One of the biggest challenges the Sun Devils faced coming into the 2007 season was who would replace Kim Bingham, a goalkeeper who only one year earlier had established the school s single-season record for GAA (0.86). Enter Briana Silvestri, who proved she was more than up to the challenge as she responded with a campaign that rivaled those of the most seasoned veterans. By the end of the 2007 season Silvestri had established a new school single-season record of her own for GAA (0.85) while collecting six shutouts along the way. Briana had an excellent season last year and we are hoping she can once again carry out a season like that, said Boyd. [Silvestri s performance in 2007] is a credit to her, no question, but I think part of the credit also goes to her ability to absorb and learn what she could from the player before her. Providing the Sun Devils with adequate depth at goalkeeper are junior Katie Cochran and freshman Leslie Castellano, who joined the team in fall training camp. Defense Arguably one of the biggest keys to ASU s success last season was its ability to keep games close with a stingy defense that made the opposition earn everything. In all, ASU s opponents scored one or zero goals 17 times in 20 games last season. The defense is led by returning starters senior Kylla Sjoman and junior Liz Harkin. Both bring a tremendous amount of experience and will be counted on to help ASU s younger players be successful on the field. Harkin gained even more valuable experience this past summer as a member of the U.S. U-20 National Team. One player who Boyd feels will significantly help the Sun Devils in the backfield this season is sophomore Jessie Richardson who spent the entire spring at one of the outside back positions after seeing some time there last fall. I am extremely happy with the way Jessie has performed leading up to the season, said Boyd. Her game is outstanding and I think she will have a big year for us. Junior Briana Silvestri Junior Liz Harkin Sophomore Alexandra Elston 16 A r i z o n a St a t e Un i v e r s i t y W o m e n ' s So c c e r 2008

19 2008 Outlook Sophomore Jessie Richardson Sophomore Jill Shoquist Sophomore Karin Volpe Freshman Katie Shepard is one of the leading candidates to play at the other outside spot after initially joining the program as a forward. According to Boyd the challenge for Shepard will be learning the intricacies and tactical decisions of the position. Others who will compete for playing time include freshmen Courtney Giovanni and Kate Sangster. Midfield The Sun Devils figure to be solid in the midfield where a pair of starters return in the form of junior Carly Kallas and sophomore Alexandra Elston, who earned All-Pac-10 Freshman honors last season. To be honest, I think Alexandra s first year was the tip of the iceberg, said Boyd. As well as she did last year, she is significantly better this season and she ll be really strong for us. Carly played very well on both sides of the ball last spring and I expect she ll continue to do so this season. Gone from last season is Alissa Oldenkamp, who culminated her Sun Devil career by earning All-Pac-10 honors. The leading candidate to take the spot in the starting lineup vacated by Oldenkamp is sophomore Jill Shoquist. I thought Jill was our most improved players in the spring, said Boyd. She is mobile and transitional and she has the ability to both defend and attack. Like the backline, Boyd figures the key to sustained success will be how well the younger players perform when they are called upon. One unexpected blow to the Sun Devils projected depth came during the offseason when rising junior Lindsey Johns was injured and lost for the 2008 season. Her mobility is something that would have really helped us, said Boyd. She was excelling in our winter conditioning program and we were really looking forward to what she d be able to contribute. Sophomore Erin Seto and freshman Keri Shane will look to contribute as they gain on-thejob training throughout the season. Forwards With one starter returning on the front line from 2007, the competition at forward has been more intense than any position according to Boyd. Leading the pack is sophomore Karin Volpe who emerged as the team s leader in 2007 in points (12), goals (5) and shots (35). Karin did a great job last season and she has continued to do well during our fall preseason, said Boyd. She has the most experience of anyone on our frontline and we are expecting her to take that experience and help the players around her. Although she has not been a regular starter, senior Carla Scanniello has accumulated quite a bit of experience, playing in 28 games since her first season as a Sun Devil in Carla has come on really strong, said Boyd. This is the best I have seen her play and and at the same time she is also providing some leadership. I think she will be a positive link to our young front line in helping them try to get it and understand how to work through the season. Redshirt freshmen Erica Long and Molly Simmons-Stuber are both returning from injuries and will look to work their way into the lineup. Long actually started the first three games of the 2007 season before a knee injury against Texas ended her season. It was a big hit when we lost Erica last year, said Boyd. She is an even more powerful athlete after a year of rehabbing and as she gets her game back, I think she will be very good for us. Molly is someone who would be able to contribute because of the way she plays the game, said Boyd. She is a thinking player who is very calm when she is in front of the goal. Freshmen Sierra Cook, Leeza Henderson and Courtney Tinnin all bring strong credentials to the Sun Devils. Sierra is every bit as good as we thought she d be, said Boyd. She is fast and dangerous and she has no thought in her head other than going to the goal. We knew Leeza was a strong athlete coming in, but she has shown she has more to her game and I think she can help us out down the line. Courtney has impressed with her ability to handle the ball and the runs that she makes. Her finishing is excellent and she has a nose for the goal. She knows where to put the ball to beat the goalkeeper and that is a great trait. A r i z o n a St a t e Un i v e r s i t y W o m e n ' s So c c e r

20 Head Coach Kevin Boyd When Kevin Boyd was named the third head coach in the history of the Arizona State women s soccer program following a distinguished 10-year stint at Cal, the 2005 Pac-10 Coach of the Year was quick to note he was coming into a situation that had unlimited potential. I think ASU is a diamond in the rough," explained Boyd. The facilities here are among the best in the country and the administration is very supportive. Many of the elements that are needed to be a top program are already in place. A year in Tempe has only reinforced Boyd s belief of what he believes can be accomplished at ASU. The longer I am here the more I am impressed with what this athletic program and this school offer in every area the academics, which includes an outstanding Honors College, the facilities and especially the care that is given to the student-athletes. I think this program will show up on the map very soon. When our staff talks to athletes we tell them that at ASU they will get the No. 1 athletic and academic experience in the country and I honestly believe that. Boyd's first season guiding ASU produced immediate results as the Sun Devils produced a doubledigit win total (10) for the first time since 2003 while barely missing having their name called for the NCAA Tournament. "Last year was a good year even though we didn t achieve our goals," said Boyd. "A credit to last year s team is I thought they did an outstanding job of grasping what we were doing really quickly. I think it is firmly entrenched in our returners in terms of what the culture is and what our expectations are." During his 10 seasons at Cal, Boyd, 40, was instrumental in building the Berkeley, Calif., school into one of the top programs in the Pac-10 Conference as his squads finished in the upper-half of the league standings nine times. Included in that span was his team's 1998 co-championship crown along with second-place finishes in 2000 and From (five years), Cal advanced to the NCAA tournament, setting a program record for consecutive appearances. Boyd's Golden Bear teams also advanced to the tournament in each of his last three seasons with the 2005 squad reaching the third round, marking the deepest run in the tournament for a Cal squad since the 1988 team also made the third round. Also in 2005, Boyd's team built a record in the Pac-10 to earn a second-place finish while going overall. For his efforts, the conference coaches selected Boyd as the Pac-10 Coach of the Year. That same year, his team set records for lowest goals against average (0.475), which also was the seventh-best total in the nation that year, while tying for school marks with 14 shutouts and fewest goals allowed (11). Under Boyd, who served as the program's assistant coach and recruiting coordinator in 1996 prior to his 10-year run as head coach, the Golden Bears produced 28 first or second-team All- Pac-10 Conference selections while also garnering 21 selections to the Academic All-Pac-10 first or second teams. Additionally, Boyd's teams carried a stellar overall GPA, leading all Cal teams during the season (3.34). The Boyd family: Kristi, daughter Keegan (1) and Kevin Outside of his duties with the Cal program, Boyd also worked with several club teams in the Bay Area. In 2002, he led the U18 Marin Rockers to the Cal North state title and also worked with the U17 Cal North state team. Boyd also has held several positions with the Region IV Olympic Development program, including: regional team coach ( ), U15 head coach ( ), U16 assistant coach (1996), U17 assistant coach ( ) and staff coach ( ). Before working on the club scene in California, Boyd began his successful coaching career by building programs in the Idaho Youth Soccer Association between As a coach and club director, Boyd managed the U18 State Select team and, in 1992, founded the Les Bois United Soccer Club, which he turned into a power house that collected 22 state titles. Prior to his coaching days, Boyd was an accomplished player. Collegiately, Boyd attended Tri- State University in Angola, Ind., where he was a four-year letter winner. An honorable mention All-American in 1989, Boyd was a three-time team captain for the Trojans while earning three all-district selections, three all-area selections and three all-micl selections as a sweeper. For his efforts, he was inducted into the Tri-State Hall of Fame. Following his collegiate playing days, Boyd played one year of international soccer as a member of Hamar Kameratena, a Norwegian Elite team in the country's First Division. From there, Boyd was a member of the Region IV men's open team ( ). Boyd holds several coaching licenses, including a USSF National `A' Coaching License, a USSF National Youth Coaching License and a NSCAA Premier Coaching Diploma (passed with distinction). 21 Staff Blair Quinn Second-Year Assistant Coach Former professional soccer player Blair Quinn joined the Arizona State women's soccer program as assistant coach in July, 2007 after serving in a similar position at Loyola Marymount University. In his role Quinn works with all facets of the ASU program with special concentration on tutoring the Sun Devils' goalkeepers. Quinn's expertise and ability to teach became evident very quickly in Tempe as Sun Devil goalkeeper Briana Silvestri set a single-season school mark for GAA (.085) in 2007, her first season as a full-time starter. "Blair is evolving into an outstanding coach who has contributed a lot not only on the field, but also to the overall direction of the program," said ASU head coach Kevin Boyd. "He played professionally for several years, including one year here in Phoenix and so he brings not only a great understanding of the goalkeeper position but also a lot of professionalism. He has a great perspective of the game and is a real asset to our team." Before his appointment at Loyola Marymount, Quinn served as volunteer assistant and goalkeepers coach at the University of Kansas where the Jayhawks finished with an record in Under Quinn's tutelage, Kansas sophomore goalkeeper Julie Hanley recorded a goals against average of 0.98 while recording seven shutouts. In addition to his duties with the Jayhawks women's soccer program, Quinn also coached with the Blue Valley Soccer Club in Overland Park, Kan., for three seasons. Prior to joining the staff at Kansas, Quinn was an assistant women's coach at Johnson County Community and a graduate assistant with the men's program at his alma mater, Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Mo. Quinn played at Rockhurst from 1994 through 1996, earning NAIA 1st Team All-America and NSCAA 2nd Team All-America honors in During his senior season, he set and still holds the NAIA record for shutouts with 19, earning an invitation to the NSCAA/UMBRO All-America Game. He then played for the Arizona Thunder (WISL) before concluding his career with the Kansas City Comets (MISL). Quinn currently has a USSF `B' License and an NSCAA State and Regional Goalkeeper Diploma. Anna Sanders First-Year Assistant Coach Anna Sanders joined the Sun Devil soccer program as an assistant coach in July of 2008 after a four-year stint on the sidelines at the University of Arkansas. Sanders brings a diverse resume of experience to the ASU coaching staff, which includes a combined eight years as a player and coach in the Southeastern Conference. Anna brings a lot of energy to our team, said ASU head coach Kevin Boyd. She is someone who I know our athletes are going to enjoy working with while at the same time benefitting from her knowledge. During her time at Arkansas, Sanders was responsible for recruiting efforts, fitness and film exchange in addition to a lot of coaching throughout the week in practice and on gameday. In 2006, Sanders was part of a staff which helped the Lady Razorbacks enjoy their best season in a decade as they posted double-digit wins for just the fifth time in school history and ran off a school record seven-match winning streak in the month of September. Just as impressive as Arkansas accomplishments on the field is what it did in the classroom. In 2007, the Lady Razorbacks combined for a 3.50 grade point average as a team, which was the eight-best mark in the nation. Sanders came to Arkansas after serving as a graduate assistant in the strength and conditioning department at the University of Mississippi. While completing her graduate degree Sanders also completed an internship with Auburn University s strength and conditioning department. Prior to that she was the head varsity coach at Cascia Hall Preparatory school in Tulsa, Okla., where she led her squad to one of its best seasons ever and was named the Oklahoma High School District Soccer Coach of the Year. Sanders coaching experience has also included assignments with numerous summer camps, including the Oklahoma Outrage Soccer Camps, University of Arkansas Soccer Academy and the Terry Venables Soccer School. Before getting into coaching, Sanders was a four-year starter at outside midfield for the University of Mississippi. During her four seasons, the Lady Rebels won two SEC Western Division Championships and made their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Sanders accumulated 13 goals and 20 assists for 46 points at Mississippi, all of which ranked among the Lady Rebels all-time best. Not just an outstanding player at Mississippi, Sanders was also a three-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll and was the only student-athlete at Ole Miss on the University s Committee for Intercollegiate Athletics. A native of Fayetteville, Ark., Sanders earned her bachelor s (exercise science) and master s degrees (exercise physiology) from the University of Mississippi. 31 Sun Devil Soccer Camps Camps/Alumni Summer vacation means the ultimate in soccer fun for hundreds of Arizona school children. Young soccer enthusiasts can now spend their summer learning from Sun Devil soccer coaches and players. For these kids, there is no better way to enjoy their vacation than to player soccer on the Arizona State campus. The Sun Devil Soccer Camps specialize in instruction for all levels of soccer players and are conducted by the ASU head coach Kevin Boyd and his assistants. This year s instruction will offer half- (6-12 yrs old) and full-day (8-16 yrs old) camps, a team camp (U-10 and older), a residential camp (11-18 yrs old) and a keper/striker camp (8-18 yrs old). The focus of the Half-Day Camp is on improving technical skills (ball handling, passing, receiving, heading, shooting) in a challenging but FUN environment. The Full-Day Camp also focuses on improving technical skills (ball handling, passing, receiving, heading, shooting) as well as tactical awareness (speed of play, game management, positioning, etc). Each session will include small-sided games to promote and encourage proper technique in a competitive environment. The Team Camp is designed to train a full team with a focus on two or three areas of the game (as chosen by the team coach). The environment will be very similar to that of a collegiate preseason camp. Residential Camp is geared towards players looking to challenge themselves and further develop their game. The training sessions deal with topics such as finishing, positional play, reading the game, defending, combination play, as well as technical training sessions. The Keeper/Striker Camp is designed to specifically train the strikers in multiple finishing techniques (off the dribble, volleys, heading, one-timers, etc...). The goalkeepers will be trained in shot-stopping, handling, footwork, crosses, and diving. The groups will be brought together to train the techniques in competitive game situations. The goal of these camps is to make every participant a better soccer player through instruction in fundamentals and participation in contests and games. The Arizona State staff wants to provide a chance for participants to have fun and allow campers to enjoy a memorable week at camp. Players will receive the best soccer instruction from qualified For more information on 2008 camp dates visit www. sundevilsoccercamps.com. ASU Soccer Alumni Once a Sun Devil, always a Sun Devil.
