Front: Allan Clarke, co-host Susan Piesse, Joy Freeman, Bev Davies, Helen Lyon, Rhonda Ross and Karen Hancock HAPPY CAMPERS: Wayne and Rhonda Ross on Day 1 at Lord s CARDIFF COUP: Terry Swingler with a fistful of autographs. It has been a busy winter spending the kids inheritance. Our 2015 Australian Cricket Society European adventure in paradise saw us take in the first two Tests in the UK at Cardiff and in London at Lord s, the home of cricket. Having spent an unforgettable week in Ireland, we trailed into North Wales via the ferry, stayed in a castle built in 1282, and, on the way to London, stopped off in dreamy Bath for 48 hours and enjoyed village life in nearby Lacock, where the BBC s Pride and Prejudice (the Colin Firth version) was filmed. In Bath we were met by Glyn Powell, one of our 30 or so international members, who lives 100 miles away in Birmingham. He was joined by his partner Sabrina. We had a lovely night at the Abbey, one of the world class hotels we were so fortunate to frequent. At Lord s my guest on the Friday of the Test was Drew Payne, the new Australian representative on the Council of Cricket Societies. Drew again coordinated a Sunday social match at Meopham on the Village Green involving the MCC s XXIXers and his village s first XI. During Test week, 25 Society members and their partners enjoyed the hospitality of the Cricket Society at the Civil Services Club in Trafalgar Square before going on to the tour finale dinner at Madame Tussaud s which featured talks by England s former chairman of selectors, the incomparable Geoff Miller and Chris Cowdrey, the son of Colin, both of whom spoke brilliantly. The dinner was organized by our gold travel partners Events Worldwide, who expertly coordinated additional travel packages on the continent for many of our tourists. My thanks go to Glenn and Gayle Hedley and also to Victoria Radford at Events Worldwide for fine tuning such a magnificent tour for the ACS group of travellers. JOIN US IN NEW ZEALAND IN FEBRUARY Official ACS Test Tour After our latest adventure in paradise to the UK and beyond in July, the Australian Cricket Society is again planning to venture overseas, in February, for Australia s two Test matches in New Zealand. We will mix the cricket with touring including the South Island s very best including fabulous Milford Sound and Queenstown. Our itinerary is being co-ordinated by our Gold Travel partners Events Worldwide and is dependent on at least 20 travelling. The official release of the Test dates by the NZ Cricket Board is just days away. Final costs are not yet known but will include airfares, accommodation, breakfasts, Tickets to the Tests and all transfers Your hosts will again be ACS president Ken Piesse and his wife Susan. We welcome expressions of interest in our day tour of NZ. Please ring Ken Piesse direct on or kenpiesse@oz .com.au so final itineraries and a program can be sent to you KEN PIESSE Volume 36 / Number 2 / WINTER

4 Recent Activities & Events THE AUSTRALIAN CRICKET SOCIETY S 48TH ANNUAL DINNER FRIDAY, 12 JUNE, 2015 The number of members, friends and sponsors of the Society who were present at this gala function 220 was reminiscent of the great gathering in attendance at the 1973 annual dinner when Sir Donald Bradman was the ACS s guest of honour. The dining hall at the Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club was thronged with many prominent people in the cricket world as well as many long-serving friends and supporters of the Australian Cricket Society. All had gathered in the expectation of hearing a talk from our advertised guest of honour Ricky Ponting. At the outset of his welcoming he did indicate that we would all be in for a rumbustious and highly entertaining evening of cricketing reminiscing. And so it proved to be. GOOD FUN: President Ken Piesse introduces our surprise guest of honour, Rodney Hogg, who had all 220 present laughing uproariously at his irreverent humour and one-liners. speech to the assembled company the Society s President Ken Piesse had to make an apology for the absence of our guest of honour Ricky Ponting from the function. Our President explained, Ricky and Rianna were unable to fulfill their engagement with the Society because at that very time they were both at the Royal Children s Hospital anxiously awaiting news on the condition of their infant son who was desperately ill, but happily was able to return home the following week. As our President said, the Society was most disappointed that our Patron could not be present on the night, but family had to come first at all times. Instead, he said and at very short notice, we were to be entertained by a cricketer who would be coming off his long run at the President s urgent request. At that point he did not reveal the identity of our dinner guest, but The Toast to Cricket Mark Browning Our President Ken Piesse was pleased to welcome to the rostrum his old friend and the Society s long-serving member Mark Browning to propose the time-honoured Toast to Cricket. Mark, who is also a bestselling cricket author and an experienced cricket player and coach, began his talk by outlining some of the joys a player experienced whilst actually playing cricket. He mentioned the exultation a batsman feels when he hits a four or a six as he watches the ball racing across the turf and hitting the boundary fence or soaring majestically through the air high above the outstretched hands of any fieldsman. Or equally, when bowling, the feeling of triumph one experiences when you finally succeed in defeating the opposing batsman s best endeavours and you see the ball crash into the stumps. Our speaker then dwelt lovingly for a moment or two on the joys of watching cricket being played, particularly Test cricket. With Test cricket one day is never enough, Mark said. You always want to go back for more for a second day, and then a third, until the match finally concludes. It doesn t matter whether you go alone or with friends or family. You know that you will be in the company of fellow cricket lovers and the small talk focused around the happenings in the match will warm the cockles of your heart. Mark then turned his attention to the allabsorbing pastime of collecting and reading At the dinner, ACS Interstate member and collector Dennis Coon kindly displayed a batting glove once used by Victor Trumper as part of our tribute to Vic, who died this year 100 years ago. books about cricket. He dwelt briefly but lovingly upon the joy you experience when you discover a long-sought after cricket book hidden on the shelves of an obscure second-hand book shop and the feeling of satisfaction you get when you are able to snap it up at a bargain price. Our speaker mentioned the pleasure which he experienced coaching the younger generation in the arts and skills of the game, and the satisfaction which a coach feels 4 / scoresheet

5 Recent Activities & Events when he sees that a youngster has not only developed the skills and techniques which will enable him to play the game at a higher level, but that he has also caught some of the love and passion for cricket which he as a coach has been endeavouring to pass on to his charges. Finally, Mark focused briefly on the pleasure experienced from watching cricket being played in various venues around the world ranging from the mighty MCG where ninety thousand could watch the game in relative comfort, down to the beautiful village green cricket ground with its thatched roof pavilion, its garden setting, as the players enjoyed their village game on a perfect summer afternoon. What more could any cricket lover want? Mark asked rhetorically. On this high note our speaker called his audience to its feet with the instruction To charge your glasses and to drink the time-honoured toast to Cricket, the greatest game of all. The large audience responded enthusiastically to this clarion call to honour the game. The Presentation of Awards The President, Ken Piesse, read out a citation outlining the achievements of the various award winners, who in turn thanked the Society, their families and friends for their support. The following awards were presented: The Young Cricketer of the year Awards The Steve Mason Trophies: Sam. Harper (Caulfield, Melbourne and Australian Under 19s.) Tayla Vlaeminck (Strathdale Maristians, Plenty Valley and Victorian Under 18s.) An Achievement Award: Peter Flack The ACS Best Cricketer Award the Box- Grainger Trophy: Keith Jansz The Richard Elvins Memorial Trophy Best Over 60s Player: Ian Gibson Rodney Hogg The identity of our mystery guest of honour soon became apparent as our President jocularly introduced our substitute speaker Rodney Hogg by telling us that he may not have played 150 times for Australia nor made 71 first-class centuries, but if you asked him about who is the best player he has ever seen, he would tell you without a shadow of self-doubt: Master, I look at him every morning in the mirror when I shave! This hilarious introduction was preceded by footage on the big screens scattered around the dining hall depicting Rodney Hogg taking 41 Test wickets at against the Poms in his halcyon season of when in the absence of all the Packer World Series players he really went to town on those aforesaid touring Englishmen. We are grateful to Glen Gibson for digging up this piece of archival film of a master fast bowler in action at very short notice. He began by telling us that he would do his best to entertain us notwithstanding the fact that he was not Ricky Ponting and couldn t lay claim to Ricky s outstanding Test record. Rodney began by telling us about a prank which the South Australian cricketers led by Rick Darling played on Sam Loxton during the days when he was chairman of the national selectors. Apparently it was Loxton s practice to visit the SA dressing rooms at the WACA ground in Perth before play began in the Sheffield Shield match as well as during breaks in play to let the players know that he was watching their every move and that they d better be on their best behaviour. During these visits he would help himself to a handful of the packets of chewing gum which were provided for the use of the players. One day before play in the match began Rick Darling went down to a nearby trick shop where he bought a supply of chewies impregnated HUMOROUS: Rod Hogg was a great fast bowler and now is an in-demand, very funny public speaker AWARDWINNERS: President Ken with our award recipients Sam Harper and Tayla Vlaminck (the Steve Mason Trophy winners), and new ECA scholars Tess Flintoff and Merinda Hale (ECA scholarship winners) with a red dye which would stain your mouth and gums if you ate them. Sure enough Sam Loxton comes into the dressing room the next morning, picks up a handful of these chewies and consumes them, thus staining his mouth, teeth and gums a bright red. So when Sam started telling a stream of jokes as was his habit, the players were laughing not only at his jokes, but also at him. Somehow Sam caught sight of his face in a mirror. He recoiled in dismay. You bastards! he exclaimed. Our guest of honour in mock humility referred to Gilchrist, McGrath and Ponting, who all played in three World Cup winning teams for Australia. Not all of the Australian players who had represented their country in a World Cup contest could boast such a distinguished record as those three greats Rodney reminded us. By contrast he recalled one shameful incident in the 1983 World Cup in England when an Australian side of Kim Hughes (captain), Lillee, Marsh, Lawson, Thomson, Border, Hookes, Wessels, Dyson, Hogg, and Hogan was defeated by lowly Zimbabwe. Rodney admitted that after such a disgraceful performance by such a powerful Australian team their coaches would have had them practicing hard with their heads down the next day, but not on your life, said our speaker. Ironically the team had the next day off because Kim Hughes, the skipper, had a luncheon appointment with Sue Barker, the very attractive English tennis player. How times have changed! Volume 36 / Number 2 / WINTER

6 Recent Activities & Events Rodney admired the feat of Mitchell Johnson in taking 37 wickets at 13.9 in the Ashes series here in Australia a couple of seasons ago when the Aussies won the series 5 0. He talked about the fear factor which obviously ripped through the England batsmen causing them to look like startled rabbits. He then reminded his audience that if you wanted to get fair dinkum about who has had a great summer you can t go past the summer of when a certain Rodney Hogg took 41 wickets at against the Old Enemy. The applause from his laughing audience was deafening. Rodney, in mock humility, calmly raised his hand to stop the applause. 41 at how good was that? I wake up in the middle of the night and once again think how good was that? And then I just calmly go back to sleep again. Rodney recalled that the local authorities were contemplating calling the Northcote Cricket Club s ground where Bill Lawry played in the 1960s and Rod Hogg played during the 1970s the Bill Lawry Oval. He went on to say that he had been consulted by those same local authorities who were thinking of calling some extensions to the toilet facilities at the ground the Rodney Hogg Dunnies. In mock horror our speaker recoiled exclaiming What about a bit of respect for a bloke who s taken 41 wickets at in an Ashes series in 78-79? Rodney claimed that he owed his selection in the Australian team that summer to the fact that in the match which the touring Englishmen played against South Australia prior to the first Test he had knocked out Clive Radley, who was averaging 43 for England at the time. The smitten batsman had fallen on his wicket and was given out hit wicket, bowled Hogg for a duck. For an aspiring fast bowler, our speaker said, this was a perfect dismissal. The selectors rushed him into the Test side and from there he went on to take 41 wickets at MOTHER-SON COMBO: Janitha Katugampola with his Mum, Sriyani Rodney told us of his chagrin when, as the good team man that he was, he had to congratulate Terry Alderman from WA when he broke Hogg s record in taking 42 wickets on the 1981 Ashes Tour of England. In his own immortal words he exclaimed Do you reckon that didn t burn me? When Alderman was seriously injured when trying to arrest an intruder who came onto the ground in the Perth Test match of the Ashes series, and our speaker took his place in the Australian side, Rodney understandably said to himself You frigging little beauty! He reckons that he sends Terry a Christmas card every year in gratitude for his generosity in giving Rodney another chance to shine on the big stage. Rodney concluded his hilariously funny talk by telling us the story of how he, being temporarily unemployed, bought a fruit shop in Warrandyte for $87,500 in 1990 when he was 40 years old and should have known better. For a short time he regaled us with some of the trials and tribulations of running a fruit and veg shop in the suburbs. Eventually, and almost inevitably, our speaker was invited to play club cricket with the Warrandyte Cricket Club. So once again at the advanced age of 43 he is out in the middle trying to knock batsmen s heads off by bowling short to them. He described in graphic detail how, in a match against Wonga Park, he is confronted by a smart young kid of 16 who can play a bit. He s a left-hander. Rodney tells us that he hates bowling to left-handers. Anyway, the youngster reaches 98 not out. Rodney bowls him yet another bouncer. The young fellow places the ball expertly between third slip and gully and the ball races across the turf to the boundary. The lad has got his hundred and Rodney has to stand there, redfaced and looking foolish. To make matters worse, the young 16 year-old comes down the wicket, tapping his bat and exclaiming Excuse me, Mr. Hogg, I thought you were selling watermelons. I didn t think that you bowled them! On that rather droll note our guest speaker concluded his address, and amidst spontaneous applause, was profusely thanked for helping the Society out in its time of need by our President. General News Revamp of the Society s Website Under the expert guidance of our new web master Anthony Hall, the Society is about to undertake a complete revamp of our website which will make it much more user friendly when concluded. We are all looking forward to the completion of this very necessary improvement in the Society s ability to communicate with its members and vice-versa. The Society s Two Latest Scholarship Holders The Australian Cricket Society has named two more scholars to join the Elite Cricket Academy twelve year olds Tess Flintoff and Merinda Hale. They will join the boys Adam Cosgrave and Daniel Vela who are already scholars at the Academy. Merinda comes from Mt. Eliza Secondary College and the Baden Powell Cricket Club. She also plays with Mt. Martha where she played in a premiership team with her mum during March. A bowling all-rounder, her ambition is to become the first indigenous girl to represent Australia at cricket. We wish her well. The second scholar to receive three years of fast tracking courtesy of the Australian Cricket Society is Tess Flintoff. She represents Knox Gardens Cricket Club and would like to emulate at least some of the deeds of Elyse Perry. She is coached by her father Tim. Of course, she answers to the nickname of Freddie. The scholarship program is part of the Australian Cricket Society s Caring for Cricket activities. They were announced at the Society s 48th annual dinner which took place on 12th June. Cricket-Related Awards Announced In The Recent Queen s Birthday Honours List Dr. Greg McKie has notified the Editor that among the cricket-related award winners who received honours in the recent Queen s Birthday Honours List were the following locally based Victorians; Malcolm Speed for services to the ICC and the ACB - an AO award. 7 General News NEWS FROM KINDRED SOCIETIES The Australian Cricket Society NSW In order to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the death of Victor Trumper during June of this year, the NSW division of the Australian Cricket Society held a seminar and dinner over a three day period at which a number of aspects related to the impact that the great man had on the game were discussed and celebrated. Among the papers presented at the seminar were contributions from several well known cricket people. They included Bernard Whimpress, Ronald Cardwell, Paul Sheahan, Warwick Franks, Roger Page, Murray Hedgcock and Geoff Armstrong. We heard on the grapevine that this event was a great success. A book containing an edited version of the seminar papers, edited by Ronald Cardwell and published by the Cricket Publishing Company under the title of The Life and Times of the Immortal Victor Trumper, and is available for sale at $40 posted from Ken Piesse, our gold cricket books partner on The Australian Cricket Society Tasmania The Tasmanian division of the Australian Cricket Society held its 2015 annual dinner and AGM on the same night as we here in Melbourne held ours. The guest of honour at the Tasmanian function was Australian women s cricket captain Meg Lanning. There were nearly one hundred members and friends of the Tasmanian Society present at the Blundstone Arena in Bellerive, Hobart The Cricket Society (England) Book of the Year Award The Cricket Society and Marylebone Cricket Club Book of the Year award ceremony took place in the Long Room at Lord s Cricket Ground in London on the 12th May. This year s award went to Dan Waddell for his book Field of Shadows. We congratulate Dan on his award and wish him well in his future writings on the game. News of Members Ross Cook Our Most Recent Addition to the ACS Committee We welcomed Ross Cook onto the ACS Committee recently. We value his advice very highly. At the Editor s request he recently provided the following profile of himself: I was born in Brisbane in 1950 and moved to Victoria when I was 8 years old. I am single. I have no children that I know about. I have a brother Craig who plays cricket with the ACS Over 60s occasionally, and several nieces and nephews. I attended Mooroopna Primary School after which I went to Shepparton High School where I completed Year 12. I studied Law part-time at Monash University for 3 years before completing a Mediation course at Melbourne University. I spent 40 years working in the Victorian Justice Department as a Court Registrar. My last position before retiring was as Senior Registrar at the Melbourne County Court. My hobbies include travel, tennis, golf and skiing. I ve worked as a courtesy car driver at the Australian Open Tennis Championships for the last 3 years since retiring. I played cricket with Mooroopna and then with Malvern at sub-district level with their thirds and fourths. My greatest achievement was captaining the Mooroopna Under 15 side 50 years ago. Obviously, I was no world-beater. I love watching cricket and I m a member of both the Melbourne Cricket Club and the South Australian Cricket Association. I support Caulfield in the sub-district competition. This current Ashes series in England was the third in which I have seen play in at least one match. I also watched some play in the 2012 West Indies series. Occasionally I play in the ACS Over 60s side. I have been a member of the ACS for 7 years now. I enjoy the social side of the Society as well as the way in which the Society promotes interest in the sport. I am especially pleased and proud of the way the Society provides scholarships for our most promising young cricketers. I hope that this involvement continues for a long time and hopefully helps to produce at least one Australian Test cricketer.
