1 WELCOME TO THE 2017 NCS UMPIRES CLINIC In order to enhance the SUMMER experience for all participants, NCS conducts this clinic to increase your umpiring knowledge base and therefore better your confidence. Our goal is to furnish each of you with the tools to effectively umpire a ballgame while creating an atmosphere where the ballplayers and coaches alike will respect your decisions and dedication to the game. North Columbus Sports relies on youth umpires for officiating for most of its leagues. You have been assigned dates for umpiring which do not interfere with your own ball games in which you participate as a player. When you mark that you will work on a certain date and then are scheduled to umpire on that date, you are committed to work that game. The players, coaches, parents and NCS staff are depending on you. If you absolutely cannot work a scheduled game, it will be your responsibility to find a substitute. If you fail to appear and do not get a sub, this is considered a NO SHOW and will be treated as such. Should you do this three times, this could result in your removal as an umpire up to not being asked to come back. Being a quality NCS umpire depends heavily on your desire and dependability. All umpires must arrive 20 minutes before their scheduled game time. Once you arrive, check in with the Trustee-on Duty and sign your name in the Game Schedule Book located in the Umpire Room. At this time any pertinent issues will be addressed by the Trustee-on-Duty. 10 Minutes before game time, you will bring both head coaches to the home plate area, introduce yourself, both coaches, and briefly go over the league rules of the game that you are umpiring that night. All umpires will be paid in cash at the conclusion of each game through the Trustee-on-Duty. Each Umpire must have his/her name on the game scorecard. All scorecards must be neatly written and be able to read by all.

2 THE 2016 NCS UMPIRE CLINICS ARE COMING UP THIS SPRING -Emphasis on Rules and mechanics Clinic times will be held for all umpires that will be umpiring any games that are Clinic leagues through senior boy/girl leagues -- Our goal is to furnish each of you with the tools to effectively umpire a ballgame while creating an atmosphere in which the ballplayers and coaches alike will respect your commitment to excellence and caring dedication to the game. 3 UMPIRING ADMINISTRATIVE INSTRUCTIONS: You will be umpiring games in the following Leagues: Clinic Boys, Clinic Girls, Junior Boys, Junior Girls, Senior Boys and Senior Girls according to ability and years of service. PAY SCHEDULE FOR GAMES SCHEDULED: $10 First/2nd Year Umpires $15 Third Year Umpires $20 Fourth year umpires. Two (2) Umpire system will be attempted in all NCS games. If you umpire a game by yourself, you receive an additional $5 over your normal pay wage You must sign in for your game into the game/umpire log located in the umpire room. You will be paid by the trustee on duty which will also sign your card on completion of your game. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR WORKING any and all games for which you are scheduled. If, for any reason, you cannot work a game, you must text, call or Jim Johnson to get a replacement. Failure to do this will result in you being credited with a NO-SHOW. Always show up for any game for which you are scheduled regardless of weather - unless it has been officially called by NCS - check the phone line (614) and/or the NCS website:

4 Umpires for Senior Boys and Girls, Junior Boys and Girls, Clinic Boys and Girls are eligible for rain pay. This would apply for any game that you are umpiring and the game is NOT a complete game due to weather. You MUST be at the fields currently umpiring and signed in the umpire game log to qualify for this. This amount is $5.00 and this an attempt give you something for showing up and spending your time when a full game is not completed. Coaches/Commissioners are responsible for acquiring umpires for makeup games but, if possible, you should work that makeup game, when approached. It is not your responsibility, but suggested, that if your game is cancelled due to weather, you should give your contact info to the coaches so that when a makeup game is scheduled, you get first priority at that game since yours was cancelled. Dress attire for all games: Navy Polo Shirt, tucked in your pants or shorts Navy Umpire Hat Pants or Shorts that are in good shape. No tears or holes are allowed A Clean, Neat Appearance GETS YOU RESPECT

5 TRUSTEE-ON-DUTY The Trustee-on-Duty is responsible for umpire guidance, on-site training, and payments. Making sure that all fields have at least one umpire Paying umpires at end of game - use Umpire Payout Plan - Troy Communicate with Umpires more frequently Should be visiting the fields at least one time during each set of games as time allows to make sure everything is going ok, to check on the umpires(on hot days), check the trash level in trash cans and if full, either change it or alert 1 of our groundhog staff to make sure to change that at closing. Should be checking with the concession stand as time allows to make sure nothing is needed.

6 North Columbus Sports 2017 Summer League Umpires NAME Playing Summer Ball? Where You probably do not have a summer schedule as of yet but we will know your NCS League playing dates and will avoid assigning you games at those times. Even if you are playing elsewhere, please indicate those dates which you wish to work. Send your completed calendar no later than March 31, 2017 and remember: Once Registered You have then made a commitment! We will be assigning umpires in late April. ~ Please do not send this calendar unless certain that you want to umpire this summer! ~ Clinics for all umpires have been organized this year under the leadership of NCS and will have certified Umpires in the state of Ohio giving some of the training. Dates TB at a later time. Below is a calendar of the 2017 NCS Season. Please Send me a listing of Dates that you cannot umpire and this is outside of you NCS Baseball/Softball Games. Remember, the more time you have available, the more games you will be scheduled for and the more $$$$ you make increases. When you are scheduled for a game, you re expected to be there and if you cannot, you must refer to the master umpire list to get a substitute that is in the same pay bracket as yourself. You are not allowed to get a higher paid umpire unless you get prior confirmation from Jim Johnson/Tim Sebetich first, then if not available, any other trustee. We are counting on you to fulfill you obligation, so please do your best to be at every scheduled game.

8 NORTH COLUMBUS SPORTS BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL UMPIRE REGISTRATION FORM North Columbus Sports relies on youth umpires for officiating in all leagues except High School and Pony League Boys/Girls. This year s season begins in late May and concludes by the end of July. Most games are played at Ridgeview Middle School. Selection as an NCS umpire depends heavily on your desire and dependability. If selected, you will be expected to attend every game that you are assigned for. If you yourself will be a ball player this summer with NCS, then you will be assigned dates that do not interfere with your NCS game schedule. All Umpires are paid cash for each game umpired. 9 Umpiring games in North Columbus Sports When one reaches the age of 13 by April 30th then he / she may sign-up to umpire games in the NCS program. If you wish to do so, complete the attached Registration/Calendar forms and send them to Jim Johnson Rosslyn Avenue - Columbus Ohio or to james.johnson1988.jj@gmail.com. The pay range begins at $10 and the max is It will increase in most cases each year after in increments of $5.00 maxing out at $20 per game. 1 or 2 umpires will be assigned per game (depending on the league and need) - umpires who work any game alone will be paid an extra $5 New umpires at the age of 13 will in most cases work games involving the younger age groups in the Clinic Leagues and will then, with experience, ascend to the Junior & Senior Leagues. NO UMPIRE WILL THROW ANYONE OUT OF THE GAME. If a Fan, coach or anyone is giving the umpire a hard time, it will be the umpire s discretion to either a) give the coach of the offending team a verbal warning or b) stop the game and get the Trustee on Duty involved. Asking someone to leave the field can be very stressful for the umpire and the offending fan or coach. Our Trustee on Duty should be involved in ALL cases so that the right decision is made and the relationship of the offender with NCS can be resolved in a manner that they will come back to NCS and further support our program if possible. 4+ year experience umpires that I DESIGINATE AUTHORITY TO EJECT ANYONE WILL BE TOLD OF THAT AUTHORITY.
