Using the picture and explanations from the new Lawns Bowls Coaching reference book; the level one part of which was published by Bowls South Africa in 2011, we now show you the Clinic Stance (which has stayed the same). (See page 7-5 & 7-6 if you have the new reference book.) We will complete the stages of the Clinic Technique in Forum 30 when we look at the Delivery.

12 November 2012 COACHES FORUM 29 Page 2 of 4 Using a Bowling Arm CH Dixie I happened to get hold of a bowling arm to take a photograph for Lawn Bowls Coaching (the coaching reference book currently under development). I showed it to my 95 year-old father, Dudley, just as a matter of interest. When I next saw him a few hours later, to take him to bowls, he had decided that this may just be what he needed to prolong his life in bowls! He already uses a stick with a rubber foot to help him with his balance now he uses one to deliver his bowls as well. Bowling arms were developed in Australia, in an attempt to stop people dumping their bowls something that always puts the green keepers teeth on edge. Bowls SA has unconditionally approved the use of the Drakes Pride bowling arm. Bowls Australia has approved 2 other types as well ( 29) but having examined the others, I think the palmrelease we have works the best for Dudley s needs. Drakes Pride Australia ( au/18,drakes_pride_bowling_arms.html) has 2 types palm-release and thumb-release. He delivered a few bowls with it before the tabs were up and decided to play with it all afternoon! He was not as good as he usually is, but he still managed to draw the shot a few times with a huge grin on his face too. He is like a new player erratic line and erratic weight control. But he is practicing whenever he can and has found a whole new interest in bowls. He finds it easier to control his body now and does not flick or push the bowl by accident any more. It was the first time I ve had to tell a player to lock your knee straight rather than bend your knee I was getting worried about the divots in the green as he kept automatically bending to deliver >50 years of habit dies hard! He has already adjusted his stance (fixed) to play almost goofy-footed what would normally be the stepping-foot is placed behind his anchor-foot. He feels better balanced this way. They can be bought in different sizes, depending on the height of the player short (<1.6m or <5 4 ); medium (1.6m 1.8m or ); or long (>1.8m or 6 ). They also make a length for wheelchair players. Gewapen met 4 stelle balle en n 20 m. mat vir praktiese werk, en Inleiding tot Rolbal vir teoretiese agtergrond, het ek dapper aangemeld vir die eerste van altesaam 12 les-ure by die drie Gr. 9 klasse. My werk het deel uitgemaak van die vak: Lewens-oriëntering. Die enigste voorwaarde was dat die leerders aan die einde individueel prakties ge-evalueer moes word, en dat hulle ook n skriftelike toets moes aflê as deel van die res van die L.O. vraestel. Tydens die afrigtingsessies was ek verbaas hoe maklik die leerders die nuwe vaardighede baasgeraak het. Die See the line... -roetine, fokus, ritmiese aflewering en die vorentoe uittree, het baie vinnig inslag gevind. Die positiewe kommentaar en opgewondenheid oor suksesvolle aflewerings en gretigheid om te verbeter, het my aan die hart gevat. Rolbal by die Hoërskool Swellendam Die laaste Donderdag-oggend van die kwartaal was n groot groep van die Gr.9 s van 9.00 tot op die rolbalbaan. Groot opgewondenheid het geheers. Vooraf is spanne saamgestel en spandrag beplan. Die verskillende klasseksies het in twee wedstryde teen mekaar meegeding. Ons het op die Cut throat -kompetisie besluit, aangesien albei spanne in elke kop punte kon aanteken. Twaalf klublede het opgetree as spanbestuurders. Hulle moes meet, telling en orde hou! Luide toejuiging, hande klap en high fives is oral gehoor en gesien. Nogal n aardigheid op n rolbalbaan! Almal was dit eens dat dit n uiters geslaagde manier was om die kwartaal mee af te sluit. Ons klublede kyk met nuwe oë na die Swellendam leerders wat soveel natuurlike aanvoeling vir ritme en gewig het. Die leerders het ons ook verbaas met die waardering wat hulle gehad het vir alles wat vir hulle gedoen is. Baie van hulle is vas van plan om Rolbal deel van hulle weeklikse program te maak. Ons sien daarna uit. Marina van Wyk, Boland Graham Mackenzie s Coaching Corner: For all our Highveld Bowlers During the winter on the Highveld, players shorten their backswing due to the faster greens, possibly without even realising it! Now that we are changing from the fast winter greens to the slower summer greens, it is important to ensure that you are using a good backswing to allow the forward swing to gain sufficient momentum for the bowl and to avoid the difficult to control push delivery. Remember, arm back first and then step. If you do not do this you will be forcing your delivery and lose all timing and rhythm. Also remember that it is the speed of the forward swing of the delivery that provides the weight or effort required for your bowl to reach its target. Good bowling to all!

14 November 2012 COACHES FORUM 29 Page 4 of 4 PORT NATAL DISTRICT ACADEMY Due to the interest shown in the Port Natal Academy, it was decided to assess as many players [with the potential to be included in the academy] as possible. Club selection committees were asked to nominate players who, in their opinion, showed potential. It was very gratifying to receive 90 nominations. Four camps were held during March to assess the players. The results showed varying degrees of competence but the enthusiasm and commitment shown by all left no doubt as to the depth of bowls in the district. The top 36 players attended a further all day camp on the 19 th May [see photograph]. As a large number of bowlers with potential have been identified, the need for an intermediate academy for players under 50 has become a necessity. Both academies will meet once a month. This should provide the incentive required to go through the ranks to Squad. The system has worked extremely well during the 18 months since the inception of the academy and the intermediate academy will add another rung to the ladder. There is certainly no shortage of latent talent in Port Natal and these players should not be ignored but nurtured and encouraged! Hazel Lillig (Academy Coach) WHO SAID BOWLS WASN T FUN?!
