1 2018 September Newsletter The Winter Season is nearly here, the Summer Season is at an end, for those who have been playing outdoors it is time to pack away those sun hats, shorts etc. and to get out your indoor gear ready for another super season of bowling at the NIBC. In order to make it easier for members who have been playing outdoors during the summer season, entry for the Novice Competitions is now open until the end of September Novice Competitions Novice Open Singles - Ann Whitworth Shield Novice Open Pairs - Brenda Morley Shield Novice Open Triples - NIBC Shield Novice Open Fours - Kimberley Brewery Trophy If you are eligible for entry to the Novice competitions and wish to enter please get your application form completed and returned to the Reception staff by the end of September. Forms are available at the Centre - just inside the Centre door/opposite the reception desk - and from reception staff. Novice eligibility is now straightforward. If individuals have never won an NIBC club competition then they are eligible for novices competitions. UPDATE - The Over 55s & Open Competitions are also still open for entries until the end of September, entry forms available as above. 1
2 Presidents Report Welcome everybody back to NIBC for the 2018/2019 winter season. A season from the details in the 2018/2019 Year Book looks to be another busy one for all members. The Bowls Executive Committee have had regular meetings throughout the summer all of which have been very useful and productive. Whilst mentioning the Year Book we would like to draw your attention to two new Club Competition Rules (pages 18 and 19 refer). They are: * For all club competitions the office will draw out the rink numbers for all matches played on a defined date/time or in accordance with diary availability and with no personal input from competitors. * Dress for all competitions shall be:- All rounds up to and including semi-finals white top or club shirt and grey bottoms Finals Novices white top or club shirt and grey bottoms Open and Over 55s white top or club shirt and white bottoms If you have not already done so please put your names down for all the club competitions where entry lists are being held open until 30 September The competitions are in the Open, Over 55 s and Novices categories and entry forms are on the table as you walk into the Centre. (See the notice on page 1). This season you will see from the Ladies Fixtures detailed at page 12 of the Year Book that we have entered a team for the Ladies Coppock Trophy competition. We have entered a team in order to provide the ladies that do not primarily play in the Yetton Plate and Mason Trophy with a competition that they can represent the Club in. We hope that having entered the competition that the ladies will now come forward and support the club by putting their names on the individual match sheets so that they can be considered for selection. We will need 12 players plus reserves for each game. The lady members of the Executive Committee will be the selectors for the Coppock Trophy competition, we will look to include all interested ladies in at least one of the five games in order to gain good bowling experience against other local clubs. The games to be played are against: Newark (H) - Saturday am Erewash (H) Gedling (A) - Saturday am - Saturday am South Forest (A) - Saturday pm Bassetlaw (H) - Saturday 10.30am The games will consist of 4 teams of 3 players and the dress code will be grey bottoms with plain white tops and bowling shoes (not sandals). Bowls must be stamped in accordance with EIBA requirements and Club Stickers should be affixed. There will be two publications available shortly and they are: NIBC Information for new members Guidelines for the NIBC competitions 2
3 Look out for details of the Round Robin Gala Day to be organised on Saturday 24 November Please support the club in any way that you can during the coming season. We know that we need more members through the door to ensure that the Club remains open and viable so why not ask reception for a supply of NIBC leaflets and distribute them to your neighbours and friends. Recently the Bowls Committee did a leaflet drop on the old Government Offices site at Chalfont Drive/Robinswood Drive where two large housing sites are being developed. There are a large number of houses already occupied and still many to be built. The responsibility for new membership is not just for the Council of Management Committee or the Bowls Executive Committee. It is for ALL members to take responsibility, be positive and contribute to the club by looking to introduce new members as well as supporting the Club on a weekly basis by playing, drinking at the bar, supporting teams that represent the Club. Our philosophy is that you have to put back into life what you take out and it is the same with the NIBC you cannot take from the Club without looking to put something back into the Club. At the AGM held on 19 April we said that we had 450 bread and butter club members that take part in leagues from Monday to Saturday, that enter club competitions and support friendly matches that are organized at weekends; plus 120 casual bowlers. If the 450 looked to make a commitment to recruit a new member each we could raise our membership to 900!!!! Positive action = positive results for the Club now and for the future. Thank you for your time in reading this and please continue to enjoy the great game for which we all as members enjoy. 6 A B C Quiz Page National Anthems You may have noticed in the recent flood of international competitions, World Cup Hockey, World Cup Football, European Championships, etc., that some participants sing away like true patriots to their National Anthems whilst others just stand like statues. I noticed one country in particular who s lips were always sealed so I did some checking and found that there are only four countries in the world who have National Anthems without lyrics. Can you name them? 2018 FIFA World Cup Now I know that some of you were bored silly with the World Cup, but for those who were paying attention can you name the following:- 1. Which player scored the most goals? 2. Who was voted best player of the tournament? 3. Who was voted best young player of the tournament? 4. Who was the best goalkeeper? 5. Which team won the FIFA Fair Play Award? Have a break from sport, do you know these Stars of the Cinema? 1. British comedic actor who was often cast as a moustache twirling villain or first class bounder with a gap toothed grin. 2. Prolific American actress whose best known films are perhaps Calamity Jane and Pillow Talk 3. American actor who wrote and directed the film The Way and starred in it alongside his father. 4. French model and actress who married Roger Vadim at the age of 18 and withdrew from the limelight of movies when only Actress best known for her roles in As Good as it Gets, and Twister. 6. Star of both the Wedding Crashers and the Internship,. 7. Her first starring role was in the film Raising Arizona, and she received an academy award for her role in The Piano. 8. Played 'Billy the limpet' in the film Mean Machine but is better known for his role in EastEnders. 6 Sudoku For those new to Sudoku the rules are quite simple All you have to do is fill in the empty squares so that each row, each column and each 3 x 3 block contains all of the numbers 1 to 9. This means that the total of each column, each row o& each block must add up to 45. This is a slightly more difficult puzzle, which has 36 of the 81 squares already filled in and should be possible to complete in around fifteen minutes. All answers & Solutions are on Page 8
