1 FROM THE PRESIDENT May we continue to celebrate the Corr family! Tony is once again a grandfather after Winton & Katie welcomed Joshua Patrick into the world last Monday. Please join me in congratulating Winton, Katie and Logan on the safe arrival of the newest member to their family. CHARACTER! Plenty shown by the 2s last round and plenty required from our 1st XI in the final round. Our 2s are one the verge of closing out a 10-1 season and a potential top spot on the ladder. Meanwhile, the 3rds look certain to compete in March; whilst a hiccup last round means our 1st XI are currently 5th by a percentage of just.0013 (if you can believe that!). A win in the last round will guarantee their finals place. Thanks again to Rocky Murphy for his work getting the group finals ready. Thanks again to Rosanne O'Neill & Amber Flahive for their outstanding work organising and hosting what proved to be a wonderfully successful Ladies Day. We now look forward to closing out our season. Next Saturday (February 28th) we are hosting Double Wicket cricket with our junior children taking their parents. We expect the first ball to be bowled at 5:30pm, but we ask our families to get there a bit earlier in case an early finish in the senior match means we can start earlier and get the kids home earlier. The match will be followed by a presentation to all of our juniors with our partners at Bendigo Bank Caulfield Park. Then Hulk came on and bowled in watching it unfold from the other end really good areas frustrating the batsmen whilst playing his natural game attacking and claiming 2-16 of 7 overs, but by that and aggressive! He was supported well by time the game was out of our hands with the Patty 'Hulk' Donlen (lower order Union only requiring 15 to win from 13 support player of the year). Aaron made a overs with 3 wickets in hand and a top great 78 and Hulk a tough 18 after once order bat still out in the middle. Aaron again batting 40 disciplined overs before Hammond proved his bag of tricks are still being burnt in a run out! Benji came in full picking up 1/0 right at the end. But with 14 not out and Jig 'James' Jasani got once again we dropped too many catches a big fat 0! Team total was a once again (a problem we seem to have disappointing 144, but could've been a lot every week) inevitably losing the match by worse if not for Azza & Hulk. 2 wickets. 144 just wasn't enough in the end. 3 2 nd XI vs HAMPTON CENTRAL In what was our biggest game of the season to date, where a win all but gave us second spot and a double chance, Justin won the toss and decided to have a bat on a glorious day for batting with little cloud coverage. The batting never really got going early on losing wickets consistently. We found our way to 5/68 with Oliver Kirkwood the only batsmen in the top 4 to get going. He made 39, but unfortunately found himself back in the shed a little earlier than we all would have liked. In came Nathan Mullenger and Mark Theobald whose partnership of 55 steadied the ship, with the wicket of Mark falling at 123 to a superb catch by the bowler. It was Nathan Mullenger whose innings of 61 was the catalyst of the Supertwos fight back and in that 61 only came one boundary for what was a magnificent effort of anchoring the innings. Shannon O Brien added the cherry on top with some late order hitting in a final wicket partnership with myself allowing the team to post a very competitive total of 225. The next week the boys were positive having never let an opposition make more than 170 against us all year. We started off well collecting 2 early wickets, but it wasn t all smooth sailing with the next 2 partnerships totalling 100 runs. To the boys credit however, we fought back through tight bowling from Nath, Ted and myself to really peg back their scoring rate. With that pressure we were able to start taking wickets again with the three of us taking 2 apiece. A big thankyou must also go out to Rhys Davis for sub-fielding all day in which his fielding efforts got us a run out from a direct hit. Hampton Central began to fall apart and at the end of the day we had them all out for 161. This win see us move into second spot one game clear of 3 rd and 4 th and with one game to play if a result goes our way we could see the Supertwos finish in top spot guaranteeing a home final. 4 3 rd XI vs WEST BENTLEIGH Coming into this second last game, we knew we had to fight hard for a win, if we wanted to stay in the finals hunt. With Kristian Wacky McInerney, Patty Campion and Troy Sloth Driscoll into the side, the batting order had been bolstered, so it was an easy decision to bat after winning the toss. Rhys and Wacky started us off, both beginning patiently and taking their time, picking off the bad balls. Rhys in particular was concentrating hard, playing an excellent supporting role to Wacky and later in his innings broke the picket fence he had built with a couple of 4s & a 6 before falling lbw for 26 - his best work all year. Wacky soon after retired on a great 50* which saw Sloth and Patty continue on. Pat was out for 10 off a dubious decision, so Try decided to free the arms and punished their spinners despatching them to all parts. He also retired after a good 50 with Dave and Brendan seeing us through to a final score of 4/174. Defending 174 on this tired dustbowl quaint primary school ground would need a solid bowling effort. Pat and Wacky started us off, but couldn t get the breakthrough. It took a near double-bouncer from yours truly to get the first wicket. Another great example of rubbish gets wickets. Some solid bowling from Mooney and Rhys got us through the middle overs, with Mooney bowling his 8 overs straight getting 1/23 with Wacky and Patty back on to finish the job. Wacky picked up a couple more after the opposition started swinging. He must have been channelling my efforts and tried to beat my effort of picking up a wicket with the worst ball imaginable. With only a few overs left it was looking extremely close and it took Wacky s wickets, as well as Rhys bowling a maiden in the penultimate to get us across the line. We all hit the fence for the last two overs to ensure the boundaries dried up and closed out the opposition s innings at 6/159. It was a great team effort to get us across the line and safe to say we have formed a big rivalry with the West Bentleigh boys. With one more game left in the season, we are but guaranteed finals cricket, however it s now up to us to ensure that happens. Highett West 4/174 def.
