3. Introduction Introduction The Conti-Edger simplifies the edging on the boards. It achieves a never before seen quality that revolutionizes edging. This quality is achieved on indoor as well as outdoor rinks. The Conti-Edger is continuously used on the boards during each ice-resurfacing (as the board-brush). The board-brush, the manual edger and extra edging actions become superfluous. Operation in daily use is simple and is explained in Chapter 5-Driving Instructions. Each ice-resurfacer driver should be able to operate the Conti-Edger in daily use after reading and understanding these Instructions. When used correctly the Conti-Edger will reduce your edging time to an absolute minimum and possibly negate the time completely. When using a dull or wrong adjusted blade or too much water is dispersed, it is possible that the ice grows, of course. To cut down such ice-growth it is necessary to understand the working principles and the appropriate adjustments for the desired effect to be achieved (Chapter 4-Description of Functions). This detailed knowledge is not necessary for daily use.

4. Description of Functions Description of Functions 4.1. Basics It is well known that ice shavings accumulate on the boards. The construction of the resurfacer and its conditioner do not allow the conditioner blade to reach this accumulated snow. In the curves even the conditioner runner does not reach the boards which causes a wider area of ice accumulation. All resurfacers try to remove this ice accumulation with the rotating board brush. This board brush does not work effectively and therefore the ice gradually grows at the rim of the boards. Needless to say, the ice growth in the curves is proportionally larger. Another almost unknown factor which causes ice growth on the boards is the construction of the conditioner blade. The conditioner blade does not extend across the complete width of the conditioner. Both sides of the conditioner blade are slanted upwards at the ends. The slant starts 150mm/ 6 inches from the end and extends upward with a width of 1,5 mm/ 1/16 inch. This upward slant is absolutely necessary to lay your cut into the adjoining cut, without causing a transition edge. The distance not shaved due to the blade construction and conditioner runner is approximately 250mm/9.85 inches. This area is easily recognized when you resurface without dispersing water. Fromthe top L E FT R U N N ER Raising of the Blade Resurfacer Blade Conditioner R I G H T R U N N ER cut ice-surface From the back Conditioner dasher boards Runner Raising of the Blade Blade ice-sheet concrete Not shaved area at straight boards

4. Description of Functions 4-2 The turn radius of the resurfacer increases the distance not shaved in the curves. Not shaved area in the curves This ice-growth becomes stronger with every resurfacing, because the left runner of the conditioner slides over the accumulated snow. Ice-growth increases This ice-growth had to be removed by the manual edgers in time consuming, dangerous and strenuous extra edging actions. Rotating (manual) edger Finish the edging process with the resurfacer The use of the Conti-Edger makes all other edgers and the board brush unnecessary.

4. Description of Functions 4-3 Conti - Edger The Conti-Edger is used every time the ice is being resurfaced, like the board brush. The Conti-Edger`s blade virtually `extends` the resurfacer-blade right up to the board-edge (maximum extension length 250mm/9.85 in.) and also bridges the raised end of the blade. The Conti-Edger automatically adjusts itself up to the boards. That means if the Conditioner of the ice-resurfacer is moved in the distance up to 250mm/9.85 in. to the boards, the extended Conti-Edger cuts up to the board-edge. Ice-Growth along the boards is prevented. Conti-Edger: Blade Conti-Edger Blade works forward the left (conditioner) runner It is still possible to have ice growth on the boards when using the Conti-Edger daily? Ice growth is effectively stopped along the boards through daily use of the Conti-Edger. Nevertheless minimal ice-growth up to the boards is possible that way the whole sheet of ice is able to grow despite of using the iceresurfacer. This ice-growth is produced when water dispersion exceeds the amount of ice that is shaved, for example caused by a dull or wrong adjusted blade. The Conti-Edger offers exceptional possibilities to easily prevent and remove ice-growth.

4. Description of Functions Edger-Runner (see drawings and p. 10-3) The small, adjustable Edger-Runner located on the inside of the edger console, next to the cutting surface of the edger is one of the most important parts of the Conti-Edger. It regulates the proper use of the Conti-Edger. from the top Forward Runner (4.2.6.) Edger-Blade L E FT Edger-Runner Position of the Edger-Blade (250 mm extendible) and of the Edger-Runner (adjustable in heigh) R I G H T R U N Resurfacer Blade R U N B O AR N ER Conditioner N ER D S resurfaced sheet of ice The Conti-Edger`s blade cuts forward of the left conditioner runner. For normal operations the edger blade is set exactly to the same level as the underside of the conditioner runner. Daily use of the edger with a sharp edger blade and proper water dispersion will in this position effectively prohibit ice growth on the boards. If the edger blade is adjusted lower than the conditioner runner, the left conditioner runner will follow the cutting track of the edger. The edger would cut deeper because it uses the conditioner runner as its base line. The resurfacer`s blade would follow the conditioner runner and so would create a one-sided cut along the complete width of the conditioner (From Edger to right conditioner runner). The Edger-Runner succesfully prohibits this effect. The Edger-Runner is normally set to the same level as the conditioner runners. It is placed beside the edger`s blade and therefore prevents the left conditioner runner from following the edger s cutting track independent of the cutting depth of the edger blade. This allows for a constant cutting depth of the edger. If you adjust the edger blade to a position 5mm/ 1/4 in. deeper than the conditioner runner, you will have an even 5mm/ 1/4 in. cut surface under the edger. This type of operation is totally useless and is only mentioned to describe the effects of adjusting the edger runner. from the back Edger-Blade left runner Conti-Edger: Edger-Runner, adjustable in high Resurfacer-Blade Conti-Edger: Effect of the Edger-Runner, it prevents the left conditioner runner from following the cutting track.

4. Description of Functions 4-7 Example (s. Chapter 5) The proper adjustment of the edger runner enables the Conti-Edger in combination with the resurfacer`s blade to cut one-sided over the whole witdh of the conditioner. For example, when the Edger Runner is set 3 mm/ 1/8 in. higher than the Conditioner Runners and the Edger Blade is set slightly under the Left Conditioner Runner, the Left Runner follows the cutting track of the edger until the Edger Runner sits onto the ice-sheet (here 3 mm/ 1/8 in.). When the Blade of the resurfacer is set to the same level as the conditioner runners, it cuts away the inner edge of the edger without causing a transition edge. It leaves an even, smooth cutting track behind, one-sided from the outer side of the Edger (3mm/ 1/8 in.) to the right side of the conditioner (0mm/0 in.). In this case the Cutting Depth is only regulated through the Edger Runner adjustment. When the ice surface is strongly grown before the first use of the Conti-Edger or through use of a dull edger blade or when using too much water, the ice growth can be removed very easily with help of this method. Repair Operation in 2 steps 1st step: Edger Runner turned up, one-sided cut on the left side, with distance to the boards. 2nd step: Edger Runner at the same level like the conditioner runners, Conti-Edger with board contact. Cut down the rest of the ice growth. The Edger Runner now glides in the area, that has been cut in the 1st step.

5. Driving Instructions Driving Instructions ATTENTION Don`t use the Conti-Edger before you completely read and understood this manual 5.1. General Information The Conti-Edger automatically extends itself up to 250mm/ 9.85 in. to edge your ice completely to the boards. Daily use of the Conti-Edger, with properly adjusted and sharpened blade, and dispersion of water, effectively prohibits ice growth on the boards. A repair operation (5.3) becomes unnecessary. Water dispersion is correct when the cut ice and the water dispersed represent an equivalent area. To achieve the best results operate as follows: The Edger-Blade should always be sharp. An unsharpened blade will of course scratch the snow and ice growth away, but you lose the clean cutting effect. Don t let the snow removal deceive you. Keep your blade sharp The blade adjustment allows you to adjust the cutting depth when using a sharp blade. It does not allow a dull blade to cut better. The blade of the resurfacer is pushed against the ice surface with an enormous amount of pressure. You may compensate slightly for a used blade by lowering the cutting blade depth. This is of course abrasive to the blade. The pressure allowed for operation of the Conti-Edger is maximal 45 kg/ 99 pounds. This prohibits adjusting the cutting depth to compensate for a dull edging blade.the resurfacer can not `ride` on a dull edging blade and you will scrape your ice surface. When you notice that the edging operation decreases check the sharpness of the blade before adjusting the cutting depth. This will insure the best results. CAUTION Be careful when changing the blade. The blade is extremely sharp. Always use gloves and put the protection onto the blade when changing it

5. Driving Instructions Normal Operation Starting Position Start your resurfacing operation a few meters before the entrance-exit gate for your resurfacing machine. CAUTION Use the Edger ALWAYS in the retracted position at the open door for the resurfacing machine A Entrance-Exit gate (opened) is along the side Do not extend the edger. Drive close to the boards positioning the edger board-guide (see page 10-9) so that it contacts the boards. Push the switch `Blade` to lower the edger blade. This allows you to use the edger blade without pressure from the boards on the board-guide. You may now drive slowly over the entrance-exit gate area being careful not to shave outside of the rink. Proceed to step B Entrance-Exit gate (opened) is in the curve Do not extend the edger and drive as close as SAFE possible to the boards exactly as if the Edger were not on the resurfacer. Push the switch `Blade` to lower the edger blade. This allows you to use the edger blade without pressure from the boards on the board guide. You may now shave the area along the entrance-exit gate, driving slowly with the edger in its unextended position. The area that the edger blade does not shave should be shaved once or twice a day with the edger in the extended position and only when the gate is closed securely. Proceed to step C Entrance-Exit gate (opened) is directly behind the curve. Start the resurfacing operation a few meters before the curve beginning. Drive close to the boards and extend the edger to the boards. Push the switch `Blade` to lower the edger blade. Shave the area along the curve slowly and carefully. Before you reach the gate opening you must return the edger to its nonextended position, but leaving the edger blade in the lowered position. You may now drive slowly over the entrance-exit gate area being careful not to shave outside of the rink. Proceed to step

5. Driving Instructions After passing the entrance-/exit gate for the resurfacer As soon as the board-guide of the edger has reached the end of the gate opening, place the edger in the extended position. You may now complete your resurfacing operation driving at normal speed. The switch to lower the edger blade should still be activated. The Conti-Edger has an extended reach of 250mm/ 9.85 in., but it achieves the best results when you drive as close as possible to the boards, minimizing the extension of the edger. As described in 4.1., the resurfacer does not shave the outer perimeter of the ice ( mm/ in.). By driving close to the boards you enable the Conti-Edger to shave this area, you achieve a smooth cut all the way to the boards. Water out of the rear water outlet washes snow particles from under the dasher boards and this water runs together with the ice making water of the conditioner, producing a clean and clear surface right up to the board edge. ATTENTION After shaving in the last curve switch off the `Blade`button to make sure that the edger blade is automatically lifted up when leaving the boards for the second track. You should start the second round shortly before the entrance-exit gate. Engage the front water making valves approximately meters/ ft. before the start of your second round. This cleans the blade of attached snow particles. You should have finished your track change by the gate. At this position retract, extract and retract the edger to shake off any remaining snow particles. These particles can be easily removed when departing the ice rink. At the end of your resurfacing operation turn off both water valves. Special Conditions: l At public skating sessions with strong snow accumulation it may occur that some snow is caught by the raised blade and be left on the already resurfaced area.to prohibit this snow spreading, activate the front ice making water valve during the whole resurfacing operation. l Driving with a completely extended edger produces a gap between the edger blade track and the conditioner blade track. This is due to the slanting of the conditioner blade. Driving close to the boards avoids the full extension of the edger and consequently avoids the gap in the tracks. This situation is common though with the resurfacer when driving in the curves. The gap between the tracks can be eliminated by driving occasionally in the curves, lowering the edger blade and with the edger in the retracted position.

5. Driving Instructions Repair Operation Ice may grow towards the boards when the edger blade is dull or falsely adjusted or too much water is dispersed onto the ice. Exactly out of this reason the whole ice sheet can grow and so can the ice at the boards, too. Especially in the curves, because the slower driving speed and the centrifugal force of the water. You should regularly inspect the ice thickness on the outer track. Good indication points are the lower board screws. It is even better to place marks on the boards. The marks should be evenly placed around the rink and placed at the desired level of your ice surface. Ice growth on the outer track can be removed by a strong cut, eventually without the use of water. The Conti-Edger is unique in that it allows you to remove ice growth to the boards. Adjusting the Edger Blade, the Conditioner Blade and Edger Runner as described below you can do a one-sided, left shave, from the outer side of the Edger Blade to the right Conditioner Runner Shaving slight ice growth to the boards The following adjustments are necessary for this operation: Edger Runner : Turn the adjustment screw one turn counter-clockwise = 2 mm/ 0.08 in. upwards. Edger Blade : Turn the adjustment screw one turn counter-clockwise = 0,5 mm/ 0.02 in. deeper. Conditioner Blade : Same height as the conditioner runners. The blade is correctly adjusted when the shaved track is smooth and even (try before using the edger). Edger- Blade Edger-Runner In this position, the Conti-Edger shaves approximately 1mm/ 0.04 in. deeper than the left Conditioner Runner. This Runner glides over the shaved track. This causes the Edger to cut deeper and deeper until the Edger Runner (2mm/ 0.08 in. higher) sets on the ice and stopps this effect. Now the track is shaved smoothly with a difference in depth, from the boards (2 mm/ 0.08 in.) to the right side of the conditioner (0 mm/ 0 in.), without causing a transition edge. Edger Blade and Resurfacer Blade must be sharp to perform this operation.

5. Driving Instructions 5-6 This operation can be done around the rink boards. If the desired level is achieved with one round, you may end the operation as the normal resurfacing and return to normal adjustments to finish resurfacing. There should be no remaining snow and the outer track should be finished. If you do not achieve the desired depth in the first round of this operation you may immediately do the second round or wait until the next resurfacing round and complete the one-sided shaving operation again. ATTENTION Always return the Blade and Edger-Runner adjustments to their normal position after completing this special operation. Otherwise you will go on cutting one-sided on all further edging activities

5. Driving Instructions Cutting Down a complete grown ice surface On an outdoor ice rink it is unavoidable that due to weather conditions the whole ice surface sometimes gets to thick. This is of course not desired, because every inch of ice needs more energy and costs. l By use of the Conti-Edger in combination with the resurfacer blade you are in a position to easily cut down a whole ice surface in a short period of time and without causing transition edges. Therefore you use the possibility of cutting one-sided over the whole width of the conditioner (see and ), as already described in the previous chapter and go on like that: Set the resurfacer blade to the same level as the conditioner runners, raise the Edger Runner 2mm (one turn left) and lower the edger blade 0,5 to 1,0mm. Start your first round of the repair process by driving on the outer round and cutting one-sided (see illustration next page 5-14). The 2nd round and all following rounds you drive your resurfacer counterclockwise. At this 2nd round you let slide the right conditioner runner in the previous cut of the edger blade and the left conditioner runner will follow the current cut of the edger blade. This process will result in the resurfacer blade (set to the level of runners) removing an enormous amount of ice.the additional effect is an even surface without transition edges. This counter clockwise way of driving you repeat for the cut-down of the whole ice surface. Before you start cutting-down the whole surface you should remove possibly existing growth on the rim (5.4.3.). At the recommended cutting depth of 2 to 3mm this repair operation does not require adjustment of driving speed. At larger cutting-depth (max. 5mm) you have to drive very slowly according to the performance of the augers of the iceresurfacing-machine and empty the snow tank very often.

5. Driving Instructions 5-14 Round... w Round v Round u u v w Round : one-sided cutting on the left side, driving direction clockwise. Result: 2mm deep cut from the left side to 0mm on the right. Round : counter-clockwise, right conditioner runner slides in edger cut of 1st round - left conditioner runner slides in the current edger cut. Result: 2mm deep, even cut. Round : all further rounds counter-clockwise, right conditioner runner slides in edger cut of previous round. Result: always a 2mm deep, even cut. Overall Result: An even deep cut over the whole ice-surface without any transition edges.

8. Service Information Service Information The Conti-Edger runs at proper use free of maintenance. It is made of rust-free materials as stainless steel, aluminium and polyethylene and will not loose its stability at proper use. Actually we consider all edging operations including all repair operations to be proper use. All wearing parts have a longevity, are easily replaceable and quickly available Periodical Controls: l ATTENTION l l l The Blade (p.10-10) has regularly to be sharpened and is the only part that needs regular maintenance. Experience has shown that is should be sharpened after 7-9 days of use. A dull blade only `rides`on the ice. You recognize a dull blade by the setscrew not being pushed fully against its stop. Look carefully at the safety notice and instructions at Chapter 6-8 and the information at page 5-1 The Board-Guide periodically has to be inspected to scratches. Any scratches detected at the Board-Guide hint to protruding screws at the dasher boards. Protruding Screws have to be countersunk or removed immediately. The Board- Guide has to be freed of those scratches by (fine) polishing. The Bearings (FrBU Surface Bearings, Lower Bearings, Surface Bearing; page 10-8, Idx 1-3) in the Blade-Carrier (BC) run lubricant- and maintenance-free. If once the BC hesitates when coming back upwards, you have to clean it by pumping warm water between the Free-Bearing-Unit (FrBU) and the Blade- Carrier (BC). The other way round, when the BC has to much `play`you have to adjust the setscrews newly. If none of these steps was successful, you would have to unsrew the Blade- Carrier and clean every single part (bearings). Check each bearing to damage and replace if necessary. Then assemble the BC back to the FrBU according to Instructions at page 8-2. The runners of the linear bearings (p. 10-6, Idx 1.1.) also run lubricant- and maintenance-free. After 2 years of use they should be checked and if necessary replaced (according to Instructions at page 8-7).
