1 Jordan Skating Club February 2013 Dates to Remember Tuesday February 26, Ice show dress rehearsal at 6:00 pm Thursday February 28, Annual Ice Show at 6:30 pm Saturday March 9, Our season ends with a Family Fun Skate from 10:00-11:00am Test And Competitions Congratulations to Hannah Skirrow who has proudly represented Jordan at a number of competitions this season. At Tillsonburg she placed 2 nd in the Gold Interpretive event. At the Pat Abela Competition she placed 3 rd in Ladies Gold Interpretive. At the PreNovice event in the Dennis Silverthorne Competition Hannah placed 2 nd in her short program, and 4 th in her long program. Awesome skating, Hannah! Congratulations! Many of our skaters are practising hard for the Futures Competition in March. Good luck, skaters! Congratulations to the children who skate in our Tuesday night and Saturday morning CanSkate programs -- it looks like everyone is up and moving! This year the theme is Tell Me a Story. Many of you have participated before, but we are also happy to welcome many new families this year. So here is a quick summary of the information you need to know: It's almost show time! Our dress rehearsal will be on Tuesday February 26th at 6:00 pm, and then the show will be on Thursday, February 28 th at 6:30 pm. A number of annual awards will also be presented during the show. Skaters should arrive in their costumes for dress rehearsal. They will be able to sit in the stands and watch the rest of the show when they are not skating. Every skater needs skate guards!

3 On Thursday, the skaters should go directly to their assigned dressing rooms. They will return to the dressing rooms after they skate their number, and then skate again in the finale. Each group has several parent volunteers and the coaches will assist with getting skaters on and off the ice. The volunteer lists are posted on the trophy display case in the lobby. Please read the description of your 'job' and then initial beside it to confirm. If your child is wearing one of the club costumes, they must bring a change of clothes on Thursday, as the costumes do not go home. The show is usually about an hour in length, and all of the skaters do come back onto the ice for our finale. Then we ask that just one parent goes down to the dressing room to meet the skaters. That little hallway between the ice door and the dressing rooms can get pretty crowded. You may have seen our ice show on Cogeco Cable 10 in past years. Unfortunately they will not be able to telecast the show this year, as there is also an Ice Dogs home game that night. The club will produce a DVD of the show, available for purchase for $5.00 The DVD s must be pre-ordered just add your name to the order list in the lobby. You can pay for it when you pick it up. They will be available at the Family Skate on March 9 th. We ve had a sneak peek at many of the ice show photos and they really look terrific! We expect the photos will be ready for pick up at the dress rehearsal. Volunteer of the Year Award Volunteers are vital to our organization. Without the dedication of these people, our club would not run! So please take a moment to read about the Margaret Proctor Memorial Award, and think of someone at the club who has been a big help to you in some capacity over the past few months. Previous recipients are not eligible for the award, but there are many others who are. We really like to acknowledge our volunteers and the hard work they do, so help us out by filling in the nominating form and returning it to the music room before Feb. 22 nd.

4 The Margaret Proctor Memorial Award Margaret Proctor was a dedicated volunteer for many years at the Jordan Skating Club, and was instrumental in the founding and growth of our club. Her daughter, Leslie, was a skater at our club and is now a member of our professional coaching staff. Margaret Proctor passed away in December of In tribute to Mrs. Proctor s dedication to our club, the Board of Directors instituted an award in her honour, to be presented annually to a volunteer who has served the club in an outstanding way. Each family at our club, and each professional coach, is encouraged to submit one nomination for this award. The recipient of this award shall be any skater, or family member, or member of the professional coaching staff of the Jordan Skating Club who has shown outstanding dedication and support to the club by volunteering their time and energy to the enhancement of the club during the present skating season. The Margaret Proctor Memorial Award may only be received once; previous recipients who are therefore ineligible include Mark O Connor, Deb Reimer, Marlene Pinder, Maureen Morrison, Deb German, Doug Pinder, Joyce Wong, Joanne Foster, Brenda Hodgins, Karen Paulenko, Elaine Piper, Jane Culp, Rachel Siemens, Kim Bucknall and Shirley Elliott. 5 General Information Did you know that SkateCanada publishes an on-line magazine called 'Keeping in Touch'? It's full of information about our sport and many of the country's elite athletes. You can access this month's edition by clicking on this link: Older editions have been archived and are available in the Members Only section of the SkateCanada website (you can use your child's SkateCanada number to go into 'MembersOnly') Nominations for next year s board: We have to start thinking about new board members for next year; if you are interested, and have a little time to spare, this is an excellent way to help out your club. Without a board, we can t operate. There are many positions available; see Kim or any board member for more information. Open House! If your son or daughter has been skating for a few years, you are invited to our open house events to learn more about the fun world of skating: STARSkate Group any skaters who have passed Badge 4 are welcome to come on Tuesday, March 5 from 6:15 7:00. Skaters in this group work on Badges 5 and 6, and then continue with the dances, skills and freeskate techniques of the SkateCanada tests. Skaters in this program are grouped by age and ability. We currently have skaters from about ages 6 16, working on Badge 5 up to SkateCanada Junior Bronze. Synchronized Skating Open House We have a long history (about 25 years) of synchronized skating at Jordan, and have offered teams at both the recreational and competitive level. Our Open House on Sunday, March 3 rd from 1:30 3:00 is for all skaters interested in synchronized skating. We will start our plans for next year based on the interest, ages, skating levels of those interested in this exciting team figure skating sport. Skaters who have participated at other clubs, or in other Parks and Recreation Skating programs are also most welcome to join us for the Family Fun Skate and either (or both) of our Open House events.
