1 Edition / 2011 Ki-Lines THE HUM Well, believe it or not, January 11 is almost over & with that we leave behind possibly our biggest commitment of every year, the Kiama Show, but more of that later. We have accepted an agreement with the weather bureau to look after the area of the Remote Weather station on Bombo Headland. It had become so overgrown it was costing the bureau too much to bring in contractors. Our hard working team of Lions Jim Webb, John Unwin and John Porritt spent many hours cutting down the Jungle and mowing it flat. It will now be easier to keep it that way. Our initial charge was $ for clearing, & $50.00 each time will be charged as the mowing is done. These funds will be going directly to our upkeep of the Lions Park near the Terrace Houses. Well done guys! At the start of the year, when the floods hit Queensland, I put out a call for Lions to support a bucket collection in aid of those affected, thanks to 1 st VP Jerry, we conducted two collections. Charlie de Amico, from Jamberoo, asked for our assistance in carrying the bucket for a Concert in the Park on Australia Day, that he was arranging & that we did. I am proud to say that with those collections, plus $800 from a guitar raffled on the night from Hayworth s & a donation from the Retired Policeman s Group we have raised $11,025. A job well done! This money will be transferred to our District s flood fund, where it will be distributed at ground level where our National Council sees fit after their perusal. Hey!!! What about that BBQ at the Rugby Club as our first meeting back? Wasn t that an absolute hoot! Thank you to all the wonderful ladies who provided those fantastic salads. My only regret afterwards was that we didn t get a photograph of that magnificent table of food. Thanks also to Stainless & Sandra for their suggestion of going back to the old way. After that success, I m sure we ll be doing it that way again in the future. Thanks also to the other helpers that worked around the edges, making sure that all goes off well. Well done all. A few weeks ago Lions Tony Grainger, Dave Wright, Geoff Dowd, Richard Hoskins, Dave Wardle, Ron Reynolds & myself sat down & formulated a plan for our assault on the Kiama Show catering for this year. Without going into detail, the changes we made worked. The cooking & working area was better & cleaner, our food preparation was less manually demanding & our service area far faster than in the past. In short we outlaid a little more in
2 tenting & packaging etc, but at the end of the day, it looks as though we made a profit of between $3,500-4,000, Treasurer Ray hasn t counted all the beans as yet. A special big thank you to Lions Ladies Wendi, Marilyn Wright, Jeanette Gilbert, Bobbie English, Barb Hatton, Maree Weekes, Barb McDonald, Heather Bell, Mary Wilson & Helen McInerney for chopping our tomatoes & lettuce for us on the two days. I have it under good authority that the chopping took about 20 minutes and the chatting over a cuppa & cake took 1½ hours!!! Lion Warren Weekes put me through the OH&S & food safety checks & he done good. When the official Council officer came through to check us, we passed with flying colours. To the organising team mentioned above, the set up & pull down crews, & all the Lions & Ladies who worked in the BBQ tent & manned the gates, a big well done, & thank you!! A special mention should be made of Lions Dave Wardle, Ron Reynolds & Geoff Dowd who were the backbone of our success. Whilst on Show topics, congratulations to Sue G-H for her work as the Show Secretary. She, with her President have presided over a very successful Kiama Show this year. Bit of bad news. I expected to have Dean & Craig Young as our guest speakers at our next Dinner Meeting, but unfortunately they will be training in Dubbo in preparation for their game against South Sydney & their World Club Championship game in the UK. We may have an opportunity for an elongated quiet drink & a chat after the meeting, as I don t have a guest speaker at present. I notice that I was snapped in the SCG Members Stand, actually watching Australia beat the Poms on this occasion. The photographer cast an aspersion that I was sleeping... I was not, I was contemplating...with my eyes closed. In retaliation I have inserted a picky of the snapper. His wife, Marilyn, might like to have a word to him for his lack of head wear!!! Shame on you: in the outer with the plebs, in the blazing sun, no hat & saying nasty things about your Lions President. Shame, Shame, Shame. See you all Thursday Night at the Leagues Club. President Peter I rest my case! Don t end up in the DOGHOUSE. If you cannot attend this meeting, please call to by 11am Wednesday to apologise on NO EXCUSES FOR NO APOLOGY. - $10.00 Levy is applied for no Apology

5 Trash and Treasure Sunday 20th Feb The Ubuntu team will be holding a Trash and Treasure at the Scout Hall on Sunday 20th Feb. If you have anything decent that you no longer require and you think someone would give money for, the Team would be grateful. Ian and Carolyn Kind have graciously offered space in their garage if you want to get rid of it beforehand. Jerry GH Things got ya down? Well then, consider these...in a hospital's Intensive Care Unit, patients always died in the same bed, on Sunday morning, at about 11:00 a.m., regardless of their medical condition. This puzzled the doctors and some even thought it had something to do with the supernatural. No one could solve the mystery as to why the deaths occurred around 11:00 A.M. Sunday, so a worldwide team of experts was assembled to investigate the cause of the incidents. The next Sunday morning, a few minutes before 11:00 A.M. all of the doctors and nurses nervously waited outside the ward to see for themselves what the terrible phenomenon was all about. Some were holding wooden crosses, prayer books, and other holy objects to ward off the evil spirits.. Just when the clock struck 11:00, Pookie Johnson, the part-time Sunday sweeper, entered the ward and unplugged the life support system so he could use the vacuum cleaner. 6 Hii Peter, I ve found out that ex Kiama Lion Albert Manning, now a member of the Tumut Lions Club (N4), has received an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in the General Division, For service to the community, particularly through Lions Clubs International, in the Australia Day 2011 Honours List. Attached is a photo I took of Albert at the Darwin MD201 Convention in 2008, I wonder if Albert will wear shorts later in the year at his investiture at Government House in Canberra? Maybe not! It would be nice if our club could send a letter of congratulations to Albert. David Robson PS I forgot to mention that Albert is the current President of Tumut Lions Club Yass community radio association inc. 7 Bill & Jeanette Gilbert Robin Bensley Still think you are having a Bad Day??? A woman came home to find her husband in the kitchen shaking frantically, almost in a dancing frenzy, with some kind of wire running from his waist towards the electric kettle. Intending to jolt him away from the deadly current, she whacked him with a handy plank of wood, breaking his arm in two places. Up to that moment, he had been happily listening to his ipod. A Few Snaps from the Kiama Show
