2 Fishhook Have you ever been in an airplane? Have you ever dreamed of flying through the air? When Wilbur and Orville Wright were young boys they knew that someday they would make a flying machine. On December 17, 1903 Wilbur and Orville did it! Their Wright Flyer made the first ever manned and powered flight. The first flight lasted twelve seconds and travelled 120 feet. turned their dream into reality. Setting Wilbur Wright was born in Millville, Indiana in His brother Orville was born in 1871 in Dayton, Ohio. Katharine, their sister was born in Their parents were Milton and Susan. Milton was a bishop in the church and he travelled a lot. Susan raised the Wright children. She was good at making and fixing things. In the late 1800 s Ohio had many inventors. It was the perfect place for Orville and Wilbur to grow up. In 1903, the Wright brothers airplane became the first in history to fly. In 1909, the Wrights formed a company to make airplanes. This was one year after the Model T became

3 available. Wilbur Wright died at age 45 in 1912 from a disease called typhoid. Orville sold his share of the Wright Airplane Company for one million dollars in After two heart attacks Orville died in 1949 at the age of 76. Meatballs Wilbur and Orville Wright grew up in a house filled with books. They loved to learn and read. They were curious about how things worked. Will and Orv got a toy helicopter from their dad Milton. They called it the bat. They spent hours playing with it taking it apart and making another just like it. Wilbur and Orville worked very hard learning about how things worked. This toy helicopter was the beginning of their interest in flying. Wilbur and Orville s parents, Susan and Milton, always encouraged their children s curiosity and interests. In 1889 Wilbur and Orville built their own printing press. They started their own newspaper called the West Side News. The Wrights also loved bicycles. They opened up their own bike shop where they fixed, built and designed their own bicycles. The Van Cleve was their top

4 model. It sold for $65! The success of their bicycle business helped finance their true interest in flying. The Wright brothers always had a dream of flying in a plane. Once Orville was playing with some bits of wood at his desk. His teacher asked him what he was doing. He said he was making a machine that they were going to fly someday. In 1903 they did it! They flew for 12 seconds and 120 feet. Even today every plane has something in it that was invented by the Wright Brothers. Conclusion Wilbur and Orville Wright should be remembered for their many inventions, most importantly the airplane. The Wright brothers were very curious about how things worked. They loved to learn and read. They built their own printing press and started a printing company. The Wrights then opened a bike shop. They designed and built their own bikes. Wilbur and Orville s greatest invention was the airplane. It is because of them we can fly today.
