3 A Note From the Points Recorder Since I have taken over doing the monthly results recording, I have found it interesting to check the plant crosses for the Registered Names. So members, where I could I have put in the registered names, can you kindly take note of it and correct your labels. The registered name will also usually fit into the bulletin space much easier. Thank you for your assistance in this matter, Pam Davies Fencing Panels Available I have some galvanised mesh fencing panels available (the type they used to have around schools) to a good home. There are around 10 or so panels available take as many as you like. Contact Daniel Coulton (djc388@uow.edu.au or ) for more details. Vale Nellie Holstead Nell and Alan Holsted joined our Society in While Alan was the keen orchid grower, Nell would always accompany him to meetings and shows. Nell passed away in hospital on 14 December after suffering from pneumonia. Alan attended Nell s funeral. Two weeks later on 27 December Alan, also in hospital recovering from a broken leg, passed away. Alan was 89 years old. Nell and Alan had been married for 66 years. A funeral service for Nell was held on 18 December at Woronora Crematorium. Vice President, Bob Moar attended Nell s service representing our Society and a sympathy card was sent to Alan expressing our sincere condolences from members. The funeral service for Alan was held on 3 January at Woronora Crematorium. Would you like to WIN BIG? Well its Happening Again Next YEAR!!! Do you know something about orchids? Have you been to a recent orchid event? Then you could win big in a NEW competition. All you have to do is write an article and have it published in the Bulletin and you can go in the running to win a $50 Bunnings Voucher, that s right a $50 Bunnings Voucher for your efforts. It doesn t need to be long and you don t need to be an expert all we are looking for is original articles whether they be a show report, a few photos and text about some orchids you saw on a holiday maybe even a book review on an orchid book as well as articles on any aspect of orchid growing you like. Novice members are encouraged to contribute. All Entries should be forwarded to the editor

4 Oh my Thunia, How I Neglect Thee by Dan Coulton Some years ago I got from the late Dennis Wood three small kiekies off the plant Thunia marshalliana with the typical Dennis comment give them a go. So to the chuckle of several experienced growers I took the plants from Dennis and dutifully researched their culture and desired growing conditions. But with three plants which at that time only 3 inches tall I was less than optimistic. To my surprise, Thunias do not grow like other orchids they are highly seasonal terrestrials requiring loads of water in summer and a completely dry rest and are deciduous over Winter. I grow my plant in full sun sitting just outside the glasshouse (some sort of cruel orchid toucher keeping it just beyond the best conditions) I find that full sun particularly in winter and spring is a necessity to flowering as lower light produces very long thin canes that do not flower. You can grow this plant in normal potting mix and many do however, I have found slightly better results by growing in a mix of one to one perlite and coconut peat. During spring, summer and early Autumn (until all the leaves die off) these plants are kept in 2-3 inches of water all the time however over winter they are kept dry. In terms of fertiliser these guys are heavy feeders and so I usually give them a good dose of slow release as well as full or half strength of whatever I am using on my orchids at the time I repot my plant every year in late July or early August. To repot I simply bull all the canes out of the pot, sever all the roots just below the base and place the plant back in an oversized pot and stake it up as the long canes are usually a bit wobbly I then begin water when the new growth starts in spring. Thunias, as I write this only a couple of days before Christmas flower in this period predominately. Sadly this means they almost always miss the monthly meetings and while relatively common in miscellaneous collections are not often seen (I think this was the reason for the chuckling I got from other growers when Dennis gave me the plants). The flowers are in a way cattleya like on my plant the flowers are pure white with a lemon yellow lip, the flowers are a nice size but sadly do not open fully and are held poorly on stems that are a little weak. So there you go a few pointers on an often forgotten but sweet orchid that while a little different is really easy to grow. Oh and that little plant Dennis gave me around 5 years ago, well here it is two foot high with plenty of healthy canes and around 20 flower spikes. Patience really does pay off. By Daniel Coulton P.S. if any members have other Thunia species the author would be keen to get a little piece.

5 ORCHID FLOWERS FOR SUMMER by Ross Pascoe Total Point Score for the Year 2013 Below is the total points scored by members throughout the year 2013 (December 2012-November 2013 meetings). To those that did well congratulations on a good year in orchid growing and some well deserved prizes. To those who would like to improve, look at the points, set yourself a goal and look at how you might improve your growing and presentation to snare those extra points this year. OPEN S.T. Ho 825 S.
