2 PRESIDENTS REPORT President s Report With the obvious winter weather we are all having, now is the time to be ever vigilant for those little nasties that may nibble away at any new growths and Flowering inflorescences. Almost half of 2016 has gone?? As old age sets in the time certainly flies away from us. The next Meeting scheduled for Sunday the 3 rd July and is our Annual Soup Sunday, delicious Soups will have been prepared by various Members, and we thank them sincerely for their contribution. The Winter Show will be held from Friday the 22 nd July with Set Up, Plant entries and Judging at 8pm, at the Australind Hall where we have our regular Meetings, and open to the Public on Saturday and Sunday the 23 rd and 24 th. A big Thank You to all the helpers who put in their time with the recent Sausage Sizzle at Bunning s, in excess of $ was raised, a fantastic effort by all concerned. Memberships are also due, so please contact Andrea Shine or one of the Committee Members to pay your fees, if you have you are in doubt, please contact Andrea. The 2016 Intersociety Challenge & Workshop will be hosted by the Bunbury Orchid Society and held in the Busselton Youth & Community Centre on the 6 & 7 th August, this will showcase the best Orchids in the State of WA with beautiful Displays and Individual Orchids benched for Judging, make sure you book the dates. Plans are well advanced for the Challenge, Lottery West funding decision is still pending, fingers crossed we will be successful in our Bid. 3 JUNE 2016 GENERAL MEETING MINUTES JUNE Monthly meeting.(word) June meeting of the Bunbury Orchid Society was held in the Australind Hall commencing at 9.35am. President Rick welcome members and acknowledged Life Members present. Apologies as per book. Minutes of the May meeting were distributed to members and have been read. K Merryfull (m) minutes be accepted (s) B Harwood. All in favour, carried. Business Arising. The shed damage has been fixed and the cost of the lock will be subtracted from the account. A full bus of members will travel to EziGro on the 18 th. Any member not receiving our newsletter please see Rick. Correspondence Inwards EziGro account for the vouchers for show winners. Club bulletins Garden Club info WAROO advising us of the $500 payment for each club participating in the Challenge. Outwards Patron was advised of his re-election for 2016 Insurance cover to the City of Bunbury re lease agreement. Invites to 12 clubs to participate in the Challenge and dinner, also accommodation flyers. Acceptance letter to Mr/s Mohammed. Thankyou letter to the Challenge guest speakers. Bus Quotes again. All in favour. General Business Autumn Show. Winners were congratulated and vouchers distributed. President thanked all who helped in any way with setting up and manning the show. The bus to Perth will depart from the Forum at 7.30am and Australind car part 8.00am. Thankyou to our kitchen staff as always. Mike Baker presented awards on behalf of the Judging Panel HCC to Rick Winch for Paph Prime Child HCC to Ben Vrieling for Paph wardii. A presentation of slides on seedlings will be shown at the next meeting. JULY meeting is the soup kitchen. Rick asked for soup makers to put their names down. Names were also needed for sausage sizzle roster to be held at the Bunnings centre on the 12 th June. Rick asked for all members to help with stacking away equipment. Morning tea break. Spring Show. Rick asked if anyone knows of a business or person willing to be a part of the sponsorship for the Spring Show. Their names will be displayed on the sponsors board. Rick has started the list with a $50. Donation. Lucky number was won by Gerald Jackson. Popular Vote in Open Ken Merryfull and in Novice Gerald Jackson. Judges award to Rick Winch s Paph Vangard. Raffle winners for this meeting were Anna Miles and Graham Winter. Ricks plants were won by Bob High and Adrian. Anyone interesting in buying some used shadecloth please contact Bill Dear. 7 FOR INTEREST SAKE GROWING TROPICOOL DENDROBIUMS BY BILL DOBSON Growing Tropicool Dendrobiums Tropicool is a registered trademark that belongs to Down Under Native Orchids and refers to the group of Australian native orchid hybrids with a percentage of Dendrobium bigibbum in their background; (they have also been called hot/colds). The percentage of Dendrobium bigibbum may be from as little as 6% too as much as 25%. Dendrobium bigibbum flowers in autumn unlike most other commonly used species, which flower in spring. Tropicool Dendrobiums can flower any time from February to October and in some cases three or even four times a year, with their peak being between July and September. Due to the Dendrobium bigibbum influence the flowering season is extended, over coming the problem of a short flowering duration, experienced by the traditional Australian native epiphytes. Another important factor in growing Tropicool Dendrobiums is that they will usually flower a year before other Australian native hybrids which need the new bulb to have a nine month maturing period. Thus, the "no maturing period required" feature of the Tropicool Dendrobiums is a big plus. Furthermore on most Tropicool Dendrobiums you will find that they will multi-spike with any thing from 5-6 inflorescences coming from one pseudobulb so that with judicious back-cutting on a mature plant you can turn it into a magnificent specimen in a relative short time. Dendrobium bigibbum includes all the plants that are grouped in the Dendrobium phalaenopsis group, which includes the following; Dendrobium bigibbum, Dendrobium lithocola, Dendrobium compactum and Dendrobium striaenopsis. With the Dendrobium bigibbum parentage in mind you have to grow these slightly different to the normal Aussie Dendrobiums. Remember where Dendrobium bigibbum grows in the wild, in a belt from Cairns to north of Cooktown and this is the area of the monsoon, hot humid summers of heavy rains daily but in winter a definite rest period with little or no water. So with the above in mind we grow Tropicool Dendrobiums in a very open, free draining mix. In a pot that is not too large and that has good drainage. We use and recommend Port Pots, Dome pots and GCP pots (in sizes 100 to 140mm in size). We use medium bark and 20% styrene foam beads as a mix, and keep the Tropicool Dendrobiums separately on a bench and hanging so that during the winter they get watered only half as much as the other Dendrobiums. Our mix, that I learned when I was helping Phil Spence repot, is as follows Before potting sieve the mix and remove all fines, stones, wood and skins. Wet the bark, add the styrene beads and re-wet all with a hand sprayer. Sprinkle a little pinch over it and mix the bark around thoroughly until all is covered. Now you re ready to pot up, just hold the plant in place and pour the mix in and tap on the sides of the pot to settle. If you need to, use a stake or a hanger to keep the plant from moving until it gets new roots into the mix. Do not push down the mix. Water heavily and place on the bench. 8 FROM THE EDITOR Hi All, I hope this edition of OT finds you all well, A big thankyou to all of our members that pitched in and helped at he clubs sausage sizzle held on the 12th of June at Bunnings a resounding success. I would also like to send out some get well soon wishes to Bob Highs wife who had a fall recently and found herself in hospital. Heres to a speedy recovery. From all reports the bus trip to Ezigro and Howard Tans was enjoyed by all and a great success as well,rumour has it most wallets were lightened considerably. All bar Lens I was told (I don t believe themlen). The Autumn Show was a bit light on on benched plants and attendance this year.i would suggest all members have a think about it being shortened to a 1 or 2 day event, because it may come up at the next meeting.
