1 RoboCup Junior - Perth Metro South All Saints College, Bull Creek Saturday 23 June 2018 Event Information Pack for Mentors and Participants Goals of the RoboCup Junior Perth Metro events Welcome to the first competitive events of the RoboCup Junior WA 2018 season! The goals of these events are: to enable more students to participate in RoboCup to increase participant exposure to RoboCup to establish a scalable framework for the sustainable future growth of RoboCup in WA Join the Experiment! Just like everything in RoboCup, Perth Metro events are an experiment, which means we are trying things out and learning as we go. Thank you for your patience, understanding and support as we try to expand RoboCup in WA. RoboCup Junior is a not-for-profit organization run by volunteers in their spare time, and relies on the support of the community. If you re a mentor at a Perth Metro event, please be aware that we may ask for your help with essential roles such as student wrangling or timekeeping. If we ask for your help, it s only because we really need it. If you re a mentor and would like to volunteer to help, please let us know in advance by ing wa@robocupjunior.org.au. Sharing and Learning Everyone loves a good competition. But at the end of the day, RoboCup is all about sharing, learning, having fun, and working together to create a fantastic future. The objective of the Perth Metro events is to provide an accessible pathway for more students to get involved with RoboCup and share their ideas. With this goal in mind, the focus of the Perth Metro events will be on learning rather than scoring points and winning prizes. Scores will be recorded, but scoreboards are not something you will see very much at Perth Metro events, and there will be no awards ceremony at the Metro events. Winners who have been awarded a guaranteed place at the RoboCup Junior WA state event will receive notification by shortly after the conclusion of the Metro event. Teams are encouraged to share ideas with each other throughout the event, especially with teams from other schools who might just be starting out. If you re stuck for what to try next, don t be scared to ask another team! To promote an ethos of sharing and collaboration, adults and mentors are welcome in the student work areas or pits throughout the morning practice session. After competition rounds begin at 12 noon, adults and mentors are asked to vacate the pits and leave students to work alone. This is intended to help students prepare for the experience of the WA state event, at which all teams must work without mentor support. If you re looking forward to a more competitive event, you won t have long to wait the RoboCup Junior WA state event takes place at Curtin Stadium on 3 and 4 August. As always, the WA event will be highly competitive and will feature a closing awards ceremony for the winning teams. Registration for this event opens at 9am on 1 June.
2 Structure of RoboCup Events All RoboCup events are structured in a similar way. If you haven t been to a RoboCup event before, it s worth taking a moment to familiarize yourself with how an event is laid out. Challenge areas are where the competition happens. Challenge areas include the OnStage Performance stage, the Rescue zone, and the Soccer tables. During some parts of a RoboCup event, students may also be allowed access to the challenge area in order to practice. During competition rounds, students may only enter the challenge areas when it is their turn to compete. Students must follow all instructions from event staff while in challenge areas. Competitor work areas (also known as the pits, like at a racetrack) are where students work on their robots and prepare to compete. During most RoboCup events, adults and mentors are not permitted in the pits. This is to ensure that students are not receiving any unfair levels of assistance and learning to solve problems independently. Spectator areas are where anyone (adult, mentor or student) can go to watch teams as they practice or compete. Spectator areas are normally adjacent to challenge areas and may include seating. Please be mindful of your surroundings in challenge areas and avoid getting in the way of competitors or robots. Spectators must ensure they listen to and follow all instructions from event organizers. Timetable for the Day 8:30am 9:00am Doors Open No mentors or participants will be admitted before this time. Please have all tickets ready. Welcome Presentation The welcome presentation will be approximately 10 minutes in duration. Please ensure all mentors and students attend this presentation, as important information will be provided. 9:00am - 11:30am Morning Practice This is your chance to learn, share and experiment! Morning practice sessions are intended as a collaborative development opportunity, to give students the space and time they need for informal building, coding and sharing of ideas. Although some guidance will be provided, please note that morning practice sessions are not guided workshops and participants must provide all of their own equipment. Adults and mentors are welcome in the practice areas throughout the morning and the free sharing of ideas between teams is encouraged, regardless of which school you are from. Members of the RoboCup Junior WA committee will also be available to ask questions and share ideas. 11:30am 12:00noon Lunch Break There will be a sausage sizzle available on the day, alternatively you are able to bring a packed lunch. With the exception of water bottles, note that no food or drink may be consumed inside the venue. Start of Competition rounds If you are planning to compete, this is your chance to put your skills to the test! Competing is fully optional and teams are not required to compete. Teams who do not wish to compete (for whatever reason) are welcome to stay on as spectators for the rest of the day. 3:00pm End of Event As the focus of the Perth Metro events is on Sharing and Learning, there will be no awards ceremony and no winners announced at these events. Teams who have received a guaranteed place at the RoboCup Junior WA state event on 3 and 4 of August will receive notification by within the following 2-3 days.

Participants must provide all other equipment which they may require for the event. The following is a list of recommended items for each team. Tickets Printed entry tickets for each team. Teams without tickets may be refused entry. Robot(s) Your robot(s), or the construction kit you will use to build them. Building a robot in advance is not essential for Perth Metro events, but it is highly recommended for teams wishing to get the most benefit from their day. If you re not sure where to start, you can find a range of great starter designs at Computer(s) Any laptop, computer, tablet or mobile device that you will use to code your robot. Make sure that your device has the correct software and apps, and ensure that you can log in and use your device when you are away from your own network. Remember that internet access may not be available at the venue. Spare Parts Any sensors, components, wires or spare parts that you might need. Cables Power cables to recharge your robot, and USB cables to connect with your robot. Batteries Any disposable or rechargeable batteries your robot may need to provide it with power. It is recommended that all batteries be fully charged the day before. Power Board In order to ensure each team has sufficient access to power, it is recommended that each team brings their own multi-socket power board. Wristwatch A wristwatch is a cheap and simple way to ensure you don t lost track of time. Water Bottle Humans need to stay hydrated! Bring a water bottle and drink plenty of water. Food A canteen tent will be set up outside the venue, with coffee and tea available for purchase from approximately 8am. From 11am to 12:30pm a sausage sizzle will also be available for purchase, including cold drinks. To ensure you don't run out of energy, it is recommended that all students bring their own snacks or packed lunch if preferred. Note that no food or drink may be consumed inside the venue (except for water). Lost Property Please take care of your equipment at all times during the event. Neither RoboCup Junior WA or the venue are responsible for any property which is lost, stolen or damaged during the event Before leaving the event, please check carefully to ensure that no items have been left behind. Neither RoboCup Junior WA or the venue are able to return any items which remain lost after the conclusion of the event. Duty of Care While every reasonable effort will be made by event organizers to ensure safety, mentors retain full responsibility and duty of care for participating students. This includes any specific medical or dietary requirements. Event Insurance RoboCup Junior Perth Metro Events are covered by the venue s certificate of Public Liability Insurance. A copy of this certificate is included on the following pages.

9 RoboCup Junior Australia Mission Statement RoboCup Junior Australia aspires to be a popular educational activity of excellence. During the 20th century, science and technology have made exponential strides into the bettering of people's lives, but at the same time left many problems to solve. In the 21st century, it is essential that our cultures evolve in order to cater for new technologies. This is not a problem to be solved by one country or just a few engineers. All concerned people throughout the world must work on its on-going solution. By taking a fresh look at robots as an educational and entertaining medium, it is hoped that RoboCup Junior Australia will contribute to the development of 21st century society. Objectives 1. To encourage young people to take an interest in scientific and technological fields, to cultivate their interest through robotic competitions and through hands on creation. 2. RoboCup Junior Australia will help young people to expand their social, intellectual and problem solving skills, helping them to develop into creative and independent adults. 3. To provide a forum that allows more people to appreciate the co-existence between science, technology and human kind. 4. To create an environment that will encourage people from all over the world to share their experience with science and technology, thereby contributing to its development. 5. To use robotics as a vehicle to foster the development of an internationally-based intellectual cooperative. 6. The emphasis will be on learning and enjoyment rather than competing to win. 7. Participants will be required to share technological developments in order to ensure the improved quality of the competition rather than allow an individual team's dominance. 8. RoboCup Junior Australia is an educational activity, which will nurture understanding between different nationalities via the opportunity to compete in an educational robotics competition. 9. RoboCup Junior Australia must remain accessible to students around the world. Getting in Touch RoboCup Junior WA is a not-for-profit organization run by volunteers in their spare time.
