3 Rugby on a beach with a Rugby World Cup winner. It s not your average holiday! 12:56 HRS RUGBY ON THE BEACH. FORTE VILLAGE. SARDINIA RUGBY AT AN EARLY AGE LUXURY HOLIDAYS WITH SPORTING LEGENDS BOOK NOW FOR 2017 Call our team: Visit: My passion for rugby began at year dot, I was practically brought up on a rugby field! From the beginning, rugby played a prominent role in my life. When I was young, my family had to move to Italy to allow my Dad to play rugby in Rome. I would watch Dad in what felt like endless rugby games and training sessions. To entertain myself I followed, chased, kicked, caught any ball of any shape and size, keen to get involved wherever I could. The enjoyment found from playing sport with family, the community, and the ability to make friends across the normal boundaries in life, was something I found very special. It sparked a passion for rugby that would stay with me, even now. A fond memory I have of my younger rugby years was in a tournament similar to this, the Malsis School U11 seven a-side tournament. My Mum who came to watch said it was the best day she ever had watching me play, seeing a little 9-year-old Greenwood scoring a hat-trick in the final match with his best friends. The rugby years at school are a very important stage, it shapes players and their attitudes. I was lucky enough to have some great teachers during my time. One piece of advice that has always stuck with me is a saying that goes The strong take from the weak, but the smart take from the strong. I was never the biggest guy in the team so I had to learn to really engage my brain during the game. Of course being 6.5 foot and 21 stone helps but playing smart you can steal advantage over other players! Advice I would give to young rugby players now would be to stay healthy, eat well, train hard, warm up, warm down. But it is also important to keep working hard at life outside of the sport to maintain a good balance. Be mentally tough and when the time comes and you re fit and healthy, just go for it! 4 WELCOME FROM ANDREW GROUNDS HISTORY OF RUGBY AT ST EDWARD S SCHOOL 1872 The School s first ever rugby match against Cowley Military College First ever match against a peer school, Abingdon; the match was won by Teddies. Dear Rugby players, coaches and parents, Welcome to the inaugural St Edward s Under 12 Rugby Festival. Rugby is an important part of the fabric of life at Teddies, with many great school players gracing Upper 1. Rugby is the game I love; it shows commitment, resilience and skill, but most importantly it shows sportsmanship at its finest. My most enjoyable days as a school master are the ones I spend going around the fields on games afternoons. Here I see Teddies pupils displaying great pride when wearing the cup and dagger shirt. I hope the boys enjoy today and I look forward to seeing them all play. Andrew Grounds, Master i/c Rugby Hugh Ingledew became the first OSE international, winning three caps for Wales The first St Edward s Old Boys Rugby Club was formed Charles Hammond became the first OSE to win a Blue for Oxford University. He later won 8 caps for England Internal school matches started when Tutors sets started playing each other, a precursor to the later House Matches. Lawrence Blencowe, OSE, Peter Cranmer, OSE, The period before the Great War was a high point for Teddies XVs and OSE with nine playing for clubs such as Harlequins, Blackheath and Wasps. Douglas Lambert, John Bussell and Lawrence Blencowe were particularly impressive, playing for Harlequins, Oxford and England between them Arthur Tilly took over the coaching of the top sides, helped by Sir George Mallaby. 6 7

9 SPORT AT TEDDIES The approach to sport at St Edward s is in line with the School s belief that the best preparation for adult life is a breadth of opportunity. Every pupil at St Edward s will have the opportunity to enjoy their sport. St Edward s takes sport seriously and has always had a first class sporting reputation, competing in a strong and demanding fixture list against other schools, with as many pupils as possible playing in matches. Many of our teams successfully take part in county and national tournaments. Sport at the School is driven by a team of highly skilled coaches with a number of them having played or coached at national standard. Our top sports players and sports awards holders are developed and mentored under the Team St Edward s programme. At St Edward s we recognise that not all pupils are top level athletes but we offer SPORTS SCHOLARSHIPS We offer scholarships and exhibitions to candidates who will become leading sporting figures in the school and to those with the potential to reach regional, national and international competitions. Scholars and exhibitioners join our elite athlete programme known as Team St Edward s, developed in partnership with international athletes and coaches. The main school sports for boys are rugby, hockey, cricket and rowing; and for girls, netball, hockey, rowing and tennis. a programme which caters for all ability levels. In the Sixth Form pupils have an opportunity to follow a health and fitness centred programme if they do not participate in the major team sports. St Edward s has high expectations of the pupils offering outstanding opportunities for sport with its superb facilities, which include the New Martyrs Sports Pavilion, a self-contained strength and conditioning facility, 2 astro-turf pitches, all weather netball/tennis courts, multiple sports fields and a 9-hole golf course. Pupils are also able to make wide use of the St Edward s Oxfordshire Health and Racket Club. St Edward s sports tours take pupils overseas and in recent years our teams have travelled to Italy, Spain, South Africa, South America, Sri Lanka, Barbados and Canada. Candidates will show considerable natural ability and will have begun to reach outstanding levels in one or more of our major sports. We are looking for enthusiastic leaders and team players who display talent, potential and good sportsmanship. They will justify their scholarship by acting as an example to others through their high levels of motivation and determination. For more information contact the Director of Sport, Mr Dalgleish on dalgleisha@ stedwardsoxford.org or the Registrar, Ms Munden on registrar@stedwardsoxford.org
