3 EDITORIAL by Phil Steven s As our B Section scribe would say ' Boy on boy what a week it has been in Amateur Football'. A few negatives but plenty of positives and with three weeks to go plenty of exciting and high standard football is in store for us. The Finals' Program display below shows the progress of the finals plot so far, today's matches and venues and the likely venues for upcoming matches. Everyone should realize that venues for the weeks ahead are likely venues only and are subject to change once the participating teams become known on a Saturday night. Reference to the Telephone Mailbox ( ) on a Saturday evening or the Sunday papers (Sunday Age/Sunday Herald-Sun) will provide the most up to day information. One of the major 'downsides' of the week has been the alleged abuse of the use of grounds which belong to other clubs outside the Association or grounds where our clubs play but on which a social facility stands which is out of control of the VAFA club using the ground. 4 A SECTION by Adam Kenyon REVIEW Full marks to St Bernard's. They showed greater determination, concentration and commitment when they defeated Old Haileybu ry by 3 pts last week. Haileybury had a disastrous start to the game whe n they only managed 3 goals with the breeze in the first term. St Bernard's on the other hand, were magnificent booting 5 goals against the breeze which left Haileybu ry chasing all day. Luke and Jason Gollant were instrumental in the victory providing great targets in the forward line. Frank Dunell was impassable in defence an d certainly set a fine example for his team mates. In the first half Haileybu ry were kept in the game by the efforts of And rew Walden in defence - he was everywhere! Haileybu ry came out firing in the 3rd term but were trying to kick goals from too far out and hence they registered 3.8 for the term. Simon Meehan had played well all day but when he was 'cleaned up' the Bloods chances took a dive. Scores were even going into the final term and onl y a miracle was going to stop a St Bernard's victory. Wayne Carey had won the ruck dual and consequently Matt Mulkearns, Vin Comito and Corey Mallia gathered many crumbs. St Bernard's now will wait to see who loses between De La Salle and Collegians. Haileybu ry can look to next year. The loss of Chris McKenzie and injuries to Peter Theissen and Glen Tanner prevented the Bloods from showing their true form but that's footy. Well done St Bernard's everybody was so impressed with your application - you deserved your victory. PREVIEW - 2ND SEMI FINA L Premiership favourites Collegians do battle with reigning premiers De La Salle at Elsternwick Park. Collegians thoroughly deserve to be favourites i n this game, they have dominated the season and finished two games clear on top of the ladder. With a potent forward line and a strong defence coupled with talented on ball players the Lions have had few lickings this year. Rick Schober at Centre Half Forward is the main target up forward. His marking skills are unique for his size and he is always in the play. Around him he has Michael Lake and Tony Parker to crumb the chances. Further forward we find the powerhouse combination of David Hoyle and Stephen Mount with resting rovers Danny Thomson and Jeff Lemon always dangerous around the goals. It has been rare to see the Lions forwards well held this year but No rth Old Boys did manage it in the second last game of the year. Peter Rennie will lead the De La Salle defence. The way things have been going it is more than likely that he will take on Schober. Grant Sheedy has had a knee operation but could be right for today's clash, but I doubt it. If he is fit he will take Mount. The versatile De La combination could see numerous players in line for a half back flank berth. Mark Lowe, And rew Mackintosh, Paul Fuime an d Craig Wright are all possible contendersforthe 1/2 back flank - your guess is as good as mine as to who will get the nod. Across the centre Collegians have Ga ry Irvine, Mark Hibbins and Tony Wallace. These three know howto playtheir positions to perfection with Irvine and Wallace running and kicking long while Hibbins sits a kick behind play and sets up the forward moves. Chris Campbell, Julian Moloney and Chris Belleville are just as capable as their opponents and the centre line battle will be well worth watching. If anything the De La centre line is in slightly better form than Collegians'. The De La forward line boasts Pat Mannix and Nick Fraser. These two are unbeatable on their day, but they are ever so unpredictable - up one day, down the next! The other positions are fi!led with resting rovers, ruck rovers and sometimes even out of form defenders. Sam Hunter has kicked goals when he has bee n given a chance up forward as has Chris Campbell and Julian Moloney. The Collegian defence is rock solid. Skipper James Bennett continues to dash down the ground. Brad Woolhouse, Stuart Hinchen, Steve Laussen, Andrew Wright and Christian Davidson are most hard to beat and they will be just as tough as ever today. On the ball De La will have the irrepressible Col McClounan, Ken Mullini and Andrew Ronch. De La will be hopeful that Brett Mahoney will be able to prove his fitness for this clash as his natural roving skills have been missed of late. Collegians are fortunate to have Danny Thomson, Matt Galbraith and Chris Pollock all in form and enormously talented. The engine room has been Collegians' strength over the year and one would expect them to get more than their fair share of the ball today. Collegians have the psychological advantage of defeating De La Salle only two weeks ago. Bernie Dunn had the chanceto seethefull strength Collegian machine in full flight and if it wasn't for a final quarter lapse in concentration De La wouldn't have got the chance to be within a kick of the Lions. Put basically, on form Collegians have a more potent forward line, a tighter defence and a super strong on ball department.

5 It is difficult to see De La stopping the Lions today. The big game experience of De La will aid thei r chances but somehow I don't tnink that this will be enough. Collegians, in their centenary year, have a great deal to play for and they should be able to hold out De La. Collegians by 15 points. The message iscleac Clubs must keep all Amateur persons from these facilities until after football has been completed for the day and host clubs must ensure that other sporting club members do not bring alcohol outside the facility to watch the football. If this is not adhered to two things must be considered. One - all future finals will have to be conducted at VAFA facilities only which will result in a large loss of income to the VAFA which is a budgetted item which will have to be made-up by a hefty increase in affiliations fees to compensate this substantial loss, and two - all future finals being conducted at non-vafa venues who agreeto completely close a social facility during the playing of matches. Obviously clubs operating social facilities would not agree to this and an excellent venue will be lost. The onus is on all participating clubs to do the righ t thing, enjoyfootball while it's on and celebrate and enjoy the social aspects of football after the conclusion of the whole day's play. We have it on good authority that the `Awesome Foursome's' ex-old Brighton players will be on hand cheering on their mates. Hopefully when the boys next take to the water they won't be as hazy as Hagar's crew above.

8 B SECTION by Tom Johnston The Villian' is overseas for two weeks. Reviewing and previewing this week and next week's matches is 1992 Banyule senior coach John Simpson. REVIEW OF THE FIRST SEMI FINAL Played in blustery conditions at Elsternwick Park the First semi final proved to be a game of contrasting halves. Prior to the game Old Trinity would have been seen as the logical favourites with the experience, team structure and year record to date as advantages. In the first half, bold and aggressive Whitefriars, who had made the First semi final after a courageous win over Old Paradians the week before, took the game right up to Old Trinity ignoring their opponents reputation. The first quarter began with Trinity kicking against a strong breeze and Whitefriars with the wind to the scoreboard end. The decision byallibon to kick against the wind after winning the toss, a risky one, but was vindicated at quarter time. Trinity played well into the breeze for the first minutes and only then did Whitefriars capatilize on their advantage to score their goals. Lane for Whitefriars was providing a great focal point and despite their tag as a small running side, the around ground marking of players like Bonnyman in the ruck and Coghlan was shading their taller opponents. Unfortunately Bonnyman was to tire significantly and with him went his sides hopes in many ways. His removal from the ground late in the day, exhausted, virtually ended Whitefriars competitive aerial option. At quarter time Whitefriars had scored freely and kicked accurately to establish a good score. Unfortunately, the efforts of Trinity early in the quarter had them perilously close atthe first break. Observers at the ground would have assumed that with the breeze Old Trinity would run all over their opponents but instead their score of 3.7 for the quarter reflected their method of attack. Winning the bail in the midfield they constantly bombed the ball into the forward line, often shooting from too far out - they played with little system and used the wind advantage poorly. The Whitefriars players were applying plenty of pressure and their run and share game into the breeze began to come to the fore. By pressuring Trinity into making mistakes the likes of Jenkins and Mark Bateman were able to run the ball ina nd look for their leading forwards. Such efforts restricted and frustrated Old Trinity and saw the game evenly poised at half time. But what a turnaround. Whitefriars failed to score a goal in the third quarter despite having the breeze at their backs. Instead they allowed Old Trinity to bring the ball forward with ease and score five invaluable goals against the wind. This outstanding effort decided the game. On numerous occasions, after an ill directed Whitefriars attacking move, Balazsy (playing as a loose man in defence) was able to run the ball out of defence and by way of the far wing at Elsternwick Park link up to move the ball forward. Alan Johnson's directions were followed tothe letter and the discipline showed by Trinity to follow instructions are to be admired. Anderson and Norman linked well and provided the running options asthe wingmen received the pinpoint Balazsy passes and then fed off to midfield running options. Trinity now had lots of options up forward and these forward led well and played in front. The excellent delivery to leading tall forwards Makris and Phillips was converted and Whitefriars began to look short and were often caught well behind. The final quarter was insignificant in many ways. Trinity peppered the goals and resorted to trying to score from too far out again. Whitefriars battled on gamely and will benefit from their experience in the finals this year. They should be congratulated for their efforts, as should coach Geoff Reilley who has done a fantastic job in his first year. Old Trinity now have a break to rest weary legs and get over niggling injuries. No wearier legs than David O'Shaughnessy whose courage and commitment on Saturday were commendable. They will provide the loser of this week's game with worthy opposition and are now in a good position to launch an assault on the Premiership. PREVIEW A game featuring two sides with opposing systems of play will greet Amateur followers at Elsternwick Park on Saturday. Arguable the best two teams in B Grade Amateur Football both deservetheir place in the Second Semi Final. The running handball game of Old Brighton will be matched against the long kicking game of Melburnians. Brighton will look to getting numbers to the ball and a handball at all costs movement until they can deliver to the brilliant leading Hayden. OM's will base their game around their outstanding midfield of Webb and wingers An2staksis and Maskiel. Supported by the dashing Nichols off half back. All will provide long ball supply to their tall marking forwards such as Teal. It will be an interesting game. I favour OM's on Elsternwick Park who will not waste the ball on the huge arena and get it into attack far more directly than Old Brighton. Old Melburnians to win a close game. 10 Schweppes C SECTION by "The Squirrel" Congratulations to the Fawkner Football Club on attaining promotion to 'B' Grade for season '93. Too add icing to the cake their reserves also won through to the grand final. For the vanquished, Bulleen/Temp. (seniors) and Uni-Blacks (reserves) they at least survive to fight another battle. REVIEW (29 August '92) 2ND SEMI FINAL DAY RESERVES - FAWKNER vs UNI-BLACKS After a promising start by the Blacks (4 goals to 1 ) their opponents slowly but surely picked upthetempo and by half time had squared the ledger, 5 goals apiece. After the long break Fawkner looked the goods in setting up and converting many scoring opportunities. Whilst they never threatened to run away with the game, victory was never really in doubt thereafter. Blacks must now focus solely on MHSOB's and win to get another crack at the top dogs. Meanwhile Fawkner can rest and recuperate at the expense of the remaining 2 combatants. SENIORS - FAWKNER vs BULLEEN/TEMP. 1st Qtr - A lacklustre affair in which both teams took time to feel each other out. Bullants first on the board with a minor followed shortly after by a major to Fawkner. Buileen/Temp. won the ball out of the centre twice to score full points on both occasions. The Fawks then settled and rallied to kick the remaining 2 goals of the qtc and in doing so sparked themselves into some positive team football. Fawkner Bul leen/temp nd Qtr - belonged entirely to Fawkner as they jumped out of the boxes like a whippet and exerted their supremacy to slam on 2 twins and force the opposition into catch-up footy mode. The engine room players of Fawkner were getting on top and giving their forwards ample opportu nities to score. On the other side of the ledger every forward foray of Bulleen/Temp. was met by dogged resistence. So much so that the Bullants only added 1 goal to their scoreline and allowed Fawkner in for a 6 goal haul. Fawkner Bulleen/Temp. 3.5,23. 3rd Qtr - Was to prove to be the best of the game (scorewise) for both camps. A reshuffled line-upforthe Bullants got immediate results and were able to penetrate at ease the previously impassable Fawkner backline. A couple of subtle changes to the No rtherners line-up sparked them into action and after several passages of fast free flowing football they got going in a big way to negate the Bullants attacking game and register for themselves a very handy haul of goals. In the wash-up Fawkner won the qtr. on the scoreboard butthebullants won backthe admiration of the crowd (all barthe Fawkner supporters) with their tenacity. Fawkner Bulleen/Temp th Qtr - With the sting gone out of the game Fawkner were able to cruise into 'B' Grade in the easiest of fashions. The Bulleen boys to a man didn't throw in the towel at any stage but simply were beaten by a physically stronger and more adept team on the day. The commitment level of both outfits couldn't be questioned, however, for members of both the Bullants and Bankers squads much homework will need to be done to plot the downfall of the Fawks, if at all possible. PREVIEW (5 September'92) PRELIMINARY FINAL SENIORS - BULLEEN/TEMP. vs COMMBANK 2 zip in favour of the Bullants gives them a psychological advantage but against this the Bankers have had a very nice little rest and time-out to study the opposition in action. Whatever the result I'm sure the game will provide a good spectacle in so far as skills on display from the array of talent spread evenly between the 2 teams. Driver on Andrews and George on Melican will be 2 battles which could go a long way in determining the winner. Engine room battles will be crucial to give respective forward linesthe competitive edge. Defences will be sorely tested to hold out against quick leads and big hands of Pace for Bulleen/Temp. and Rolfs of Commbank. The more I study this game the more even the outcome appears. Very little separates these 2 teams but only 1 can go on to challenge Fawkner for the Flag and in doing so earn promotion. Either would be worthy contenders but to sort out the likely winner here's my summation : Break even between the midfielders, Commbank defence to hold out against the Bullants forwards and Bankers to win out slightly in the ruck division to give their forwards an edge in scoring opportunities to get home by the narrowest of margins...3pts. Question : Will Peter George ever loan the 'Squirrel' his jacket again following this selection? Variables - If a dry track, I stick to the above prognostication. However, if wet, soft and soggy (slow) I'm on the Bullants to win by 21 pts. it's called each way betting on 2 groups of good guys! RESERVES - UNI-BLACKS vs MHSOB's Stuck my head out last week and tipped the Blacks to do a 20 goal turn around and knock off the Fawks. Wasn't far wrong either I might add. Problem was that I added a rider and said that if they didn't win then they wouldn't or couldn't beat the Schoolers. Now do I weaken and change my mind about that or do I go for the jugular and declare all the reasons why I reckon the Sth Yarra boys will get the bikkies. I'll do neither, except to suggest that this will be one ripper of a rezzies game between 2 very talented outfits. The experience of the Schoolers sway me their way as doesthe threat of Tony Drummond sitting on me. Enough said, MHSOB's by 14 pts. 12 -~9NTWEN ~-- R' -~-- Tha Great AuttralEan Taate D SECTION by Peter Lemon LAST WEE K They might have needed it in the VFA, but there was certainly no requirement for 'extra time' in last week's D Section Preliminary Final! When the final siren sounded, Mazenod had overwhelmed St Bedes to the tune of 57 points to set up a shot at their third premiership in four years. For only a short time in the first term, and ten minutes in the second, did the Bedas look like throwing out any sort of a challenge. The Noddies outmarked and outpaced them, and had winners all round the ground; their delivery into the forward line was significantly superior to the Bedas, who were forced into 'blaze away' mode for much of the game. Noble was a dominant force up forward for the Noddies, No 1 (Kendall) gave heaps of drive, and other players to catch my attention were Maclean who blitzed the opposition with pace, and Marshall. (That's the good news guys. The bad news is that I had an eye test yesterday - Monday - the result is a massive change in the prescription!) For St Bedes, it was a disastrous day (three losses), and another big disappointment to echo their 1990 finals campaign. Peter Lannan and Tony MacGeorge would have taken my votes, along with Sal Algeri, and perhaps Hambridge, but for the second week in a row few players had any significant effect on the game. In the Reserves, Old Ivanhoe traded in the pennyfarthing for a V8, and did come out with all cylinders firing. Twice they outscored the Bedas against the wind as they regained some of the form that had taken them to the top of the ladder. Bedas' best were Danny Spencer, Bill Dunstan and Mark Beasley - whilst the Hoes named a massive list of best players : cutting it to 1/6 the size, they were Darre n '0. D: Caddy, Darren Scott in the centre, and The Dinosaur in the ruck. TODAY This could be a great grand final. Both sides have similar strengths and great depth, and whilst Caulfield have been the more consistent over the season, the Noddies have certainly got their act together over the last fortnight. The Noddies are experienced finals campaigners and winning premierships has become an art form ; few of the Old Caulfield players will have played much finals football before,.yet the Club is hungry for success after a number of disappointing seasons - and a fine regrouping this year. Certainly the Fields players adapted quickly and easily in their 2nd semi final, and showed no signs of being green. Doubtless the influence of more senior players such as Mathews (who will have appreciated the week's rest) and Berz ins will be helping their cause. On the subject of green, the Noddies' full forward Peter Green managed only one goal last week out of a tally of 18 ; it's hard to see him being held to that number again today. Noble will also be a headache for the Fields; I wonder if Andre Will will be given the job - he played a great game at centre half back when I saw him earlier in the year, but has been less prominent among their better players in recent weeks. At the other end of the ground, the Noddies will still need to watch Mathews carefully ; he's kicked plenty on a number of occasions this year, but importantly the Fields had plenty of other strings in the bow when they won the 2nd semi. Round the centre both sides have talented players - Trevor Royals is undoubtedly one of the best in the section, with Glen Harrison not far behind him (or is it the other way round?) but against that the Noddies have powerhouses in the form of Rogers and O'Hara. All round the ground it looks like being a wonderful even competition, and picking a likely winner is one heck of a job. The ruck duals will also be tight, although I expect the Fields duo of Holmes and Ben Mathews to hold a slight edge. In addition, one of the great strengths of the Fields - on their day - has been their tackling. If they can apply significantly more pressure on the Noddies than St Bedes were able to last week, then that could be a telling difference. I'm going for the Fields to take this game narrowly, especially if it's dry. If it's wet, I can't see the Fields handling conditions as well, so it looks as if two predictions are required : a mainly dry day - and a Caulfield victory by ten points. Reserves : The Hoes will be buoyed by their much improved effort last week, and doubtless by another stirring motivational speech from their coach today. However, it's hard to go past the Noddies who were so totally in control when they last met. Mazenod, but it will be closer than last time. E STREET by Tom Brain And we now have just two left with the rejuvenated North Brunswick nowjoining their neighbours in the Grand Final but more importantly earning for themselves that all important promotion to D-Section. After sneaking into 4th position the No rthies have put together an excellent final series to this stage and fully deserve their elevation, they have certainly taken all of us by surprise and now play in the ultimate game. To Noel Kenny, Paul Adams, Peter Fox, Dino DiMarco congratulations on a job well done and good luck this week. A disappointing finish for Doveton who after being minor premiers and convincingly so, struggled at the final hurdle losing both their finals games. I'm sure it's shattering to them at the moment, but I'm also sure that when they look back and analyse their season in a couple of weeks they will realize they have come a long way and have a very solid footing on which to commence SENIORS REVIEW The game opened at a pretty brisk pace with both sides testing each other out trying to gain the psycological advantage and early ascendency, and so at the first break the scores were pretty close with noone really in control. The second term saw North start to take charge of the game.jason Tirchett was playing a great game in the ruck and was nullifying Big T making it hard for the Doves to get the ball out of the middle. North worked really hard and in the end their persistence paid off as in the later part of this stanza with a loose man operating down one side of the ground they kicked a few goals to go in at the main interval with a handy break. As inmost football games these days the 3rd quarter is the championship quarter. Many games are won or lost here and this was to be no exception. Deano was creating havoc up forward giving No rt h plenty of heart and instilling confidence in all the team. Jason Tirchett continued to dominate and Kakafikas must have a sore foot, the number of times he kept sending the ball in Deano's direction and sothe Northies kicked 5 twins to the Doves one to all but have the game sewn up at 3/4 time with a 7 goal lead. The Doves were struggling, appeared to have a few players carrying niggling injuries and this appeared to affect their adaptability just a little. So the final quarter started No rt h were still not finished, they kicked 3 early goals to open up a 10 goal break and ensure promotion. From here on in they appeared to tire just a little (something that could be a worry this week) to allow Doveton to kick the final 4 goals and add some respectability to their score. Nonetheless it was a great victory for the Northies who kept at it and did not deviate from their game plan. Doveton found the pressure a bit much and perhaps a bit of inexperience told at crucial stages but they will learn from this. Both sides has their share of good players but in my opinion no-one was better than Jason Tirchett giving away many inches to big Tony Ahdore he really set it up for his side. Deano with 8 goals and a hand in a few others was tops, Joe Boudoloh in his 50th game conpeted hard against Dyke, and little Kaka was always about. Doveton's best was Steve Reiger who did a great job on Ady Tirchett, young Campbell was not overawed, Burgo was his usual self, and Andrea Murphy and Johnno continued their good form. RESERVES REVIEW This one was close all day with hardly anything in it. Powerhouse suffered a few injuries which did not helptheircause, it leftthem slightly undermanned and did allow Aquinas to get their game going. The House led all day but one feltthey never really had total control, the Bloods were unbelievable with their attitude and their refusal to give in, and this in the end proved the crucial factor as in the end they were just too strong and advanced to the GF with a 10 point victory. Aquinas really won the game out of the middle where `Bogo' Rogers, Hacks and 'Ned' Kelly set it all up. Dave Phelan was superb across the back for the House, Crossy had a great 2nd half and Copie tried hard all day. All associated with Powerhouse wish to thank George Tsolacos who coached both sides all season. A superb effort - Well done George and the Bloods and all in the Street wish Rob `Boofa' Williams a speedy recovery from his serious leg injury. GRAND FINAL PREVIEWS SENIORS Both sides have threatened me with the fear of death if I tip them this week, but the pen is mightier than the sword and I will make a decision albeit hard as I have tremendous respect for both clubs and all the personnel involved. Before we get tothe game both clubs have promised a tickertape parade down Sydney Road on Friday afternoon where they have promised to throw Pizzas and Salami to the awaiting throng. Nonetheless it should be a great game of Amateur Footy between the two best sides. No rt h have surprised and are now a chance, Brunswick have improved as the season goes on and really deserve to start favourites. Both sides have some really good players Northies with Vinny, Ady, Deano, Monty, Kaka a strong defence led by Vinnie and Barry Thorpe while Brunswick have Dasha, the Snake, the Watterson boys, Jacko, Kanna, Crossy, Strahny, Lars, the list goes on. The highlight of the game and what I believe where it will be decided will be the clash between Danny Hall and Jason Tirchett at the centre bounces. Jason will again give away inches but never stops trying but Danny is a class footballer (that will cost you mate), and the winner of this will set it up for both sides' little men. A week's break in Ammo finals is not always good but

15 today, I think it will work in Brunswick's favour and I'll tip them to win the Centenary E-Street premiership. I wish all the players from both sides the best of luck. May the better team win. Congratulations go to St Leo's especially in their first year in the amateurs being promoted to E Grade for As for St Ma ry's its commiserations as they were expecting to feature in the Grand Final. Last week's issue I forgot to mention Salesian and Peninsula on the good year they both have had especially Peninsula who in 1991 struggled the year to finish 3rd bottom with a couple of wins. It just goes to show that with a few good players teams can improve and give themselves a chance of playing in the finals. Talking of the finals poor Old Essendon have had to travel more miles than the Leyland brothers to contest their finals. Anyway, Good Luck to both Old Carey and Old Essendon today with the winner going to E Grade and the loser staying in F for another year. REVIEW SENIORS : In the Second Semi Final St Leo's with an 8 goal last quarter defeated Old Essendon by 46 pts to advance to the Grand Final. In the First Semi Final Old Carey were too talented for St Ma ry's to win by 31 pts. RESERVES: St Pat's 'Golden Oldies' earned themselves a Grand Final berth with a hard earned 25 pt win over favourites St Leo's. 18 ILTINDER 19 SECTIONS by Alax Lyon REVIEW OF LAST WEEK'S GAMES DIVISION 1-1ST SEMI FINA L I finally got the monkey off my back and now look 'Mrs Coach' in the eye as a result of my successful selection of OM's to beat Nodders. commiserate I can't help but with Nodders whose consistency and excellent discipline throughout the season was frustrated by a hat-trick of losses to finish the seson. Whilst the final margin was 7 goals it was not until the last 1/4 that OM's broke away. Dangerous forward Theodore got 5 fot OM's whilst consistent goalsneak 'Mini' Thompson got 3. OM's were best served by Pat Donovan, Aaron Teelo and skipper Kogler Brad Meadows kicked 6 for Nodders Steve whose best were Poland, Scott Bruce and Paul Occhipinti. DIVISION 2 CENTRA L 1ST SEMI FINA L The Blues really turned on the power against the injury stricken Hoes to win by almost 100 points Blues. The big man power was really to the fore with David Koczkar (8) and Richie Dodd their goals (3) getting the bulk of. Other good performances in a very even side came from Brendan Cullen, Matt Unswort Adam Tippett h and at F/Back - wouldn't have thought he had a lotto do there!! Hoes were best served byj McGowan and. Pace, Fanelli. Hoes were no doubt disappointed to finish the year on a(ow note but they have had a good year in their return to U19 ranks and should be a force next year with many lads again eligible. Good effo rt Hoes! 2ND SEMI FINA L The final margin in this game of almost 15 goals in favour of Therry did not reflect favourably on the very having effort put in by a 7 goal lead at ~wtime olrt h2112 quarters. ought Therry coul d still be pushed if the Wells could get past the Roys 112 back line but, after a very even first half of the 3rd quarter, the Roys moved into top gear and went right on with it. Wells have picked the wrong time to cop a few injuries and also had a few down on their best whilst the Roys benefitted from their Friday Pasta etc. and played with a lot of confidence. Strachan, David Walker and Donal 'U-etc.' battled hard for Welts whilst Therry didn't have a passenger except for `Gitty's' kicking for goal (Watch a Royce Hart video and give up the smokes Gilly!) 'Gilly' somehow managed to kick 8 and 'Big Bakes' (cool it in the G/Final Bakes!) got 4. Peter Joyce was just their best ahead of'gipsy' who was terrific at CHF and Mark Finnigan was a goal scoring backman. I thought Nick Court's effort with the 'coloured' eyes was also very good. DIVISION 2 SOUTH ist SEMI FINA L There is little I can say about this game, except that it was a scrambly affair and I am always pleased to see a team that displays exceptional control and discipline emerge as winners. Melb. High club can be very proud of the efforts of their boys who justifiably move into today's Prelim. Final. Commiserations to John Meyer who deserved a lot better for getting his boys into the finals again than they gave him in that disgraceful last quarter. Commiserations also to the Bedas boys who wanted to play football, particularly gutsed it out all day and big Beasley who Hecker and O'Brien. Albergo got 4 for High and good efforts came Wailes from Barge, and Jeremy Goldin whose contribution was terrific until 'taken out of the game, hope he can front up next week Steve! 2ND SEMI FINA L Chirnside showed improvement from their last encounter against Jackers and were only rolled by Jackers' last 114 burst with only points separating the teams until then. Pedler, Spurli and Cardetta were Parkers' best and Jackers were best served by Toffter Engelman and Danny Rajch and Sheezel who kicked 4. PREVIEW OF TODAY'S GAMES DIVISION 1 2ND SEMI FINA L The last time Xavs and De La met, Xavs' team manager Chris was prompted to write and tell me what a good game it was - I hope that he again sees another top quality game but he might not be writing in next week as a winner as I think D's are just about ready to cause an upset. I haven't seen Xavs for a while but I was impressed by De La's teamwork in the poor conditions at Mazenod a couple of weeks ago, However, I think Xavs may be just better suited to the 'Trott' and will just scrape home today. DIVISION 2 CENTRAL PRELIMINARY FINAL Camberwell have undoubtedly been the best team throughout the season but have been dealt cruelly with injuries at the wrong time. If they can get the bad parts of last week out of their minds and focus on their good efforts, they are quite capable of upsetting the Blues who must be chockful of confidence after last week. However, I think the Blues will have too much of an edge in the air and should use the shorter direct route home at Monash to their advantage. DIVISION 2 SOUTH PRELIMINARY FINA L I really am at a loss to pick the winner between High and Parkers because they are so evenly matched Because High Played. at Monash last week (and won, despite my selection!) they can be classed as the home team tods ay, o I'l go l for th em again. The mental approach to our game is so important. That is why we have inconsistent performances. It is a week to week proposition. 3. All players have physical courage just to step over the white line to play. The good players master their fear and can control their inner doubts. 4. Look for consistency in your performance, minimise the area between your top performance and your bottom performance. 5. The harder you work the luckier you seem to be. 6. Set reasonable and achievable goals, establish your plan, then have a weekly commitment to that plan. 7. Learn to lock your concentration into what is happening at the time - three phases : Us them neutra l 8. Ask "What am I doing?" Don't let yourself get into stressful situations. 9. Don't take the easy way out or look for excuses. If??? Everytime you get a kick in the backside learn from it. 10. Have the courage to learn and analyse yourself and not accept what is happening if it is a negative in your life. 11. All 1992 VAFA Sponsors were invited with the intention of the lunch to publicly acknowledge the VAFA's appreciation of the generous support of our sponsors during the Association's 100th season. Sponsors were suitably impressed with this facility and saw it as an 'addori to the promotional opportunities they had received throughout the season with the VAFA. The VAFA for this year's finals series has hired a mobile billboard which is a30 ft. x 10 ft. banner erected onto a tandem trailer and displaying information about the 1992 finals series and, in particular, the Gala Grand Final Weekend on September 19th and 20th at Elsternwick Park. The major sponsor of the VAFA VIC HEALTH and DENTAL HEALTH SERVICES logos are proudly displayed on this banner. During weekends this is parked on the hill overlooking the entrance to the ground, clearly visible to the great amount of traffic passing in Glenhuntly Road. During weekdays it will be towed throughout the metropolitan area giving a wide exposure to the VAFA finals series and bringing VIC HEALTH and DENTAL HEALTH SERVICES sponsorship of the VAFA to a wide cross-section of the community. During the luncheon attention was drawn to the great support which we received from SOUTHERN FM 88.3, a community radio station located in Moorabbin. Each week the VAFA conducts two regular time slots on this radio station, Thursday 3 p.m : 3.30 p.m. John Kelly, one of our VAFA goal umpires, hosts a 1/2 hour show in which Phil Stevens the VAFA General Manager provides a report on VAFA news and upcoming games ; and on Sunday a. m. the Amateur Footy Show is hosted by Graeme Byrnes and Mike McArthur-Allen with Mark 'Dos' Anderson providing reports on games and upcoming VAFA events. A major announcement made at the luncheon was that this year will have the A Section Grand Final on Sunday September 20th broadcast live from Elsternwick Park throughout Southern FM 'Dos' Anderson will provide expert commentary on the game with special comments by Graeme Byrnes and Mike McArthur Allen. This historic broadcast of the Centenary A Section Grand Final is being brought to all Amateur followers by VIC HEALTH, DENTAL HEALTH SERVICES and RACV INSURANCE, a new co-sponsor of the A Section Grand Final. The broadcasting range of Southern FM covers all of the southern suburbs and extends north into suburbs such as Brunswick and Balwyn and into some of the eastern metropolitan area. This is a great

33 opportunity for VAFA supporters who are unable to attend the game to keep up-to-date with the game as it happens. Those who attend the game itself can bring their transistor radio with them and be entertained by the broadcasting team. The broadcast goes to air from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. and will feature some interviews during the pre-game and half-time interval. We are particularly appreciative of the support of the three sponsors who are enabling this broadcast to be provided to the VAFA fooballing community. Whilst on the topic of radio 3UZ will now feature each Thursday at 9.15 a.m. Adam Kenyon the A Section reporter presenting the VIC HEALTH VAFA REPORT on the Leon Wiegard 'Good Sports Show' each week during the finals series. Each Saturday night, as usual, Phil Stevens will present the Amateur Roundup at 6.25 p.m. on 3LO followed by scores from all games. The VAFA VIC HEALTH Telephone Mailbox, , is another service provided for VAFA followers anxious to get the latest scores of the day's matches.
