3 From the Baron and Baroness ~ Greetings, beloved al-barran, jewel of the Outlands! What a whirlwind month April was! The April First Sunday newcomer s event was spectacular, Kingdom A&S was sensational, and the Albuquerque Ren Faire was super fun! Thank you to all involved in producing and supporting these events! We hope last month prepared you for the upcoming busy summer season. May brings us Baronial First Sunday favor tournaments, change on the throne of the mighty Outlands, a 2-day demo at the 25 th Annual Rio Grande Celtic Festival, and, with no small fanfare, Grand Outlandish XL. To say that it s an activity-rich month would be an understatement. Although First Sundays for May and June have been spoken for, we plan to suspend First Sunday activities for a few months to encourage your attendance at Fontaine s 10 th Warders event in July, Clann Wars in the cool shadows of Ruidoso in August, and Battlemoor IV in Walsenburg, CO, Labor Day weekend. Has someone impressed you with their service? How about wow d you with their skills? Please, don t hesitate to send your recommendations for recognition to us via the Baronial website award rec form. 7 From the Chronicler My dear fellow al-baranians, It has been my pleasure to be your Chronicler for the past year and a half. I hope I brought some fun and smiles to the Shaft, despite my strange brand of humor. I am sure your new Chronicler will bring you a smart, informative newsletter. I will have a few submissions for you in the future I'm sure, as my mundane life allows. Please continue to support our Barony and keep our Shaft strong and full of... submissions! All interested parties should submit their letters to myself, Ymanya, Bruno and the B&B. Currently the website s pages are generated dynamically through php4 scripts but the pages could be made static if scripting languages are not in your skill set. Minimum job requirements: - Knowledge of html and the ability to update the baronial website. - Ability to use a ftp tool. - Ability to comply with Corporate and kingdom policies in regards this office. 8 Rio Grande Celtic Festival Saturday and Sunday May 18-19, 2013 Balloon Fiesta Park 4401 Alameda NE, Albuquerque, NM Saturday, 9 to 5, Sunday 9 to 4 We will be participating in the Rio Grande Celtic Festival again this year!! Last year was so much a success that we have been invited back!! This year Sir Tancred and his group of merri men will be hosting Heavy and Cut and Thrust demonstrations and Lord Sorchan and Don Govanan will be wowing the public with their skills in the Rapier Arts. An archery display is planned along with some show and tell Arts and Sciences. Arts and Sciences volunteers are still needed to attend the event and show off their craft. For Sunday, May 19, Sunday fighter practice has been moved to this event and we will have a Melee at 11:00 am, sparing at random throughout the day. TE Otto and Elisee will be putting up their group of Period Pavilions and would like for volunteers to bring their banners (and poles) to give the Medieval Village the look and feel of our time period. Again this year there is NO COST for our volunteers. We will have color armbands for easy identification!! If you are a volunteer for this event or would like to volunteer, Please contact me or the heavy/light coordinator no later than May 4 th so we can get you on the list and get you an armband. For this Extra Large event we have planned all the usual favorites, brought back a few oldies but goodies and are starting a few new Traditions. We will be walking down the GOT memory lane with historical markers and activities meant to celebrate everything Outlandish. We have a new site with beautiful views and trees big enough to block the winds. The site is wet, and fire restrictions will be posted as we know them. So come celebrate 40 years of memories and Grand Outlandishes with us! 11 From the Seneschal Good greetings and warmest wishes to you all! I cannot thank everyone who helped out at the Renaissance Faire enough. You continue to shine and make us all proud. Thank you to Their Excellencies for arranging such a fantastic showing for us and all of the coordinators and your teams for such hard work. Thank you so much! With the Renaissance Faire behind us, we look forward now to the Celtic Festival and to Grand Outlandish. I know they will also be great successes, and if you're looking for ways to help out, the stewards and coordinators can still use your help! Please contact the event stewards if you'd like to be involved. As we move into summer, remember that THL Bevin is running May's First Sunday, and Viscountess Lore is in charge of June's. After that, Their Excellencies and I encourage you all to help support our neighbors. We will be setting aside July's First Sunday so that we can all travel to Fontaine dans Sable and help them celebrate their 10th Warders. In August, we will be traveling south to support Clan Wars with the Shires of Nahrun Kabirun and White Mountain. Then to September and Battlemoor! My thanks to Lord Bruno and all the work he's done with the Shaft. Thanks also to Lady Teresa, who will be taking over for him next month. Also, many thanks to THL Diana for staying on as my deputy for the first three months of my tenure. Please help me welcome THL Aigiarn, who has taken over as my deputy. 13 Monthly Activities Citizens Meetings: Held on the 3rd Tuesday of every month at the Manzano Mesa Multigenerational Center located at 501 Elizabeth St. SE, Albuquerque, NM. Meetings begin at 7:00 pm. For information Fighter Practice: Sunday from 11:00 am until 3:00 pm at Montgomery Park located on Comanche near San Mateo. For heavy weapon fighting information, contact Sir Li at: For rapier fighting information, contact Lord Sorkhan at Archery Practice: Location: Every Saturday Time: 10:00am - 12:00pm Occurrence: During the colder months (roughly December through April) it's at Sir Stefan s Winter Wander Range. During the warmer months (May through November) it's at Master Tore's. Description: This Weekly practice to sharpen your skills for the range and the field. Directions: Directions to the Winter Wander Range: It is located just south of Menaul Blvd NE (parking is available in the lot on the SW corner of Menaul and Broadway) Entrance to the range is the alleyway immediately south of the PINK apartments on the west side of Broadway. Follow the wooden fence west to the archery range.
