1 Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes Monday 25th April 2016 Truly Unbelievable Act In all my years in Lanesboro I never came across such a low act to befall a person as befell a lady who was out in Clonbonny on Wednesday evening last for the underage blitz and the U16 challenge game. Bearing in mind that there was in the region of 120 children from four clubs for the blitz and upwards of 40 more for the U16 game it was phenomenal that such an act could be carried out in broad daylight without anyone seeing the perpetrators. Some vile language was scraped with an item on the door of the car. The Gardaí were called and the attending Garda seen many criminal deeds amongst other things but this was a first for him it was a first for the Rathcline club as well. The cost of repairing the car will run into hundreds of euro. The person or persons that did this should not be allowed to get away with this low act. This type of behaviour should never befall any person that is going out to support and help out in the promotion of sport in their parish. I, as well as the club and Gardaí would like to hear from anyone that witnessed or has any knowledge of such a low and foul deed. Defibrillator training to commence soon Have you signed up for the defibrillator training yet? It is very important as many as possible get trained in the use of the defibrillator and it is also important that those due for recertification also sign up for recertification. Time is running out to put your name down for the new course that will be starting in the immediate future. Names are also being taken for recertification course. As many people from the multitude of groups, clubs and associations are asked to sign up for the course as we never know the time or the hour that your lifesaving skills with the defibrillator will be required within your group. What with all the different events and festivals coming along the more people trained and recertified in the use of the defibrillator the better. To make a booking for the new course or recertification please contact Martina O Brien in the shop or phone The Green A living History The ever vigilant and watchful Eamon Mc Caffrey in the USA ed me to inform me that I omitted Nuala Mulcahy when I was listing the Mulcahy family in 53.

Wedding The marriage took place in St. Mary s Church, Lanesboro on Friday 8 th April of Jackie Glennon, daughter of Dermot and Colette Glennon, Lanesboro and Alan Lackey son of John Lackey, Doughill and Maureen Lackey, Athleague. Chief Bridesmaid was Susan Linnane close friend of Jackie and Alan. Bestman was Warren Linnane close friend of the bride and groom, Groomsmen were Kenneth Lackey, brother of the groom and Trevor Lackey brother of the groom. Pageboy was Ben Lackey son of the bride and groom. Flower Girl was Holly Lackey daughter of the bride and groom. The marriage ceremony was celebrated by Fr. Mickey Reilly, Lanesboro and the wedding reception was held in Kilronan Hotel. We wish the happy couple many years of wedded happiness. Locals Honoured at Gala Night Longford GAA held its very own celebration on Saturday week when they honoured the 1966 and 1968 Longford teams that brought so much glory to Longford over

3 those years winning for the first and only time the National League when beating two time All-Ireland Galway winning team and who in 1966 went on to win tree in a row and in 1968 they beat Laois to win the one and only Leinster senior title. They were very very unlucky in the All-Ireland semi-final when they lost by two points to Kerry. Brendan Gilmore was our sole representative on both teams and in the intervening years both Seamus Flynn came to live on the Green and our Parish Priest Fr. Mickey Reilly was appointed to the Rathcline parish. We congratulate the three men on bringing great glory to Longford in those year and we hope they are basking in the memory of the glory days for Longford and longing for another Longford team to come along to equal or surpass their achievements. Your support is sought If you cannot make it home to the Monster Greyhound Night, then you can contribute by buying the Buster tickets Buster Tickets cost only 2 each and you can buy tickets, 10 or 20 or greater denominations by forwarding your money to Teresa Ormsby, Chairperson, c/o Clarke s Bar, Joe O Brien, Secretary, Corner Shop or James Flaherty, Treasurer, Lehery, Lanesboro. Jack Harte brings his play to the Backstage Language of the Mute is the debut play for local man Jack Harte and it got widespread acclaim when it was staged in Dublin. This play has greatly moved the huge number of people that have gone to see it. The play is a strong and commanding portrayal of how unscrupulous people use their charm to shatter lives. It is hugely powerful play and it is one that must not be missed under any circumstances. Be prepared to be moved, this is a compelling play. Tickets are priced at 16 or 14 for senior students and students. The play will take place in the Backstage theatre Longford on Thursday 12 th May at 8pm. Lanesboro s Plays and Dramas Over the years there has been memorable plays, dramas, pageants and musicals in Lanesboro. There is a move to collate all old photographs, programmes, paper cuttings and other memorabilia that may be in the hands of those that had involvement in them. Brave Giant will play Lanesboro Parish Hall on Saturday 7 th May. Make sure you are there. Death Many in the parish especially those of a slightly older vintage were saddened last week when news broke on Friday 22 nd April of the death of Mrs. Mary Kenny, 11 Knock at Costello s Nursing Home, Ballyleague. Mary was predeceased by her late husband Paddy and sister Kitty Nolan, Fermoyle. She was a native of Cloonfad, Co. Roscommon and was one of three sisters that came to live and work in Lanesboro and all married local men. Mary in recent years was in failing health and received excellent care from the staff at Costello s. She was a lady with a warm disposition and a wonderful attitude towards life. Mary personality exuded confidence and friendliness and her cheerfulness and anyone that had the pleasure to know her will remember her for all of these traits. Mary was a caring mother and excellent homemaker. She was a great neighbour and friend which was the constant comment when anyone spoke of her passing. Mary s remains reposed at her son Tommy s residence in Cloontuskert on Saturday and on Sunday her remains were removed to St. Mary s Church, Lanesboro for her Funeral Mass. Following Mass, she was laid to rest alongside her husband Paddy in Clonbonny. To her sons Pat, Brian and Tommy, sister Nora Killian, Fermoyle, relatives and many friends we extend our deepest sympathy. Sympathy We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Kathleen and Liam Dennigan, Mahoraveen and indeed the extended Greene and Kelly family on the death last week of Mrs. Bridie Greene, Elfeet, Newtowncashel, mother of Kathleen Dennigan. Between 1965 and 1968 it was the Golden Age of football in Longford when Longford won the National League beating All-Ireland Champions Galway, the Leinster Championship by beating Laois in the final and were very unlucky to lose in the All-Ireland semi-final to Kerry. In his debut book Mattie Fox, son of the Longford Co. Secretary at the time, gives a fly on the wall account of all the goings on and in the book he recounts the events of the time. It is a great read and a book that everyone should read. Congratulations to Mattie. The book is on sale in O Brien s and costs 15. Rathcline Ladies The Ladies seniors had a fruitless trip to Edgeworthstown on Sunday morning last when they came up short against the home side. The U12 and U16 competitions are continuing and the teams are performing very well. Hard luck to the Community Games girls side who were defeated on Sunday last. 10 The Taste of the Lakelands food festival is supported by Fáilte Ireland (Lakelands Tourism), Longford and Roscommon County Enterprise Boards, Waterways Ireland, Supervalu and will attract visitors from all over the country and abroad over the two days. The event will be a huge showcase for food producers from throughout this area and the organisers are inviting all small producers of products such as cheeses, mushrooms, chocolate, coffees, breads, artisan foods and anything else grown or made in this area to take part. The fish of the Shannon will obviously feature fairly centrally. Throughout the two days there will be live cookery displays featuring the TV celebrity chef Kevin Dundon (compliments of Bernard Keane, Supervalu Lanesborough) and our own expert local chefs such as Paul Horohoe from PS Red and Philip Gordon from The Swan Tavern. The committee has also invited Kieran Glennon, Head Chef of Patrick Guilbaud s Michelin 2 Star Restaurant in Dublin a native of the area to attend along with Mary and Patricia O Loughlin of the Sisters Bistro. It is also hoped to stage outdoor water sports activities and children s entertainment on the weekend weather permitting as part of a Blueways Blowout event beside the Shannon. The weekend will commence with a community bake-off event for local project to be announced later. Are you a local food producer in Longford or Roscommon? Would you like to be part of this exciting initiative? Help and support for event will be provided by the Lough Ree Angling Hub Office (Old Health Centre opposite Sorohan s in Ballyleague) Liam Sweeney runs the office 10am to 3pm daily. Call in or e mail Loughreeanglinghub@gmail.com or call Liam on if you would like to take part. The food producers who join this initiative have also been invited to take part in a special Shannon Boat Rally Market taking place along the promenade and in the marina in Ballyleague on Sunday morning July 24th at 10am. Rathcline GAA On Wednesday night the Minor club hosted a blitz in Clonbonny and following the blitz there was an U16 challenge game. Sadly, I have to report that during those games someone was out among the parked cars down along the fence beside the training pitch and they scraped foul

11 language on a lady s car. The thug that did this dastardly deed should be named and made recompense the lady for the damage to her car. If anyone knows, hears or has any inkling as to who may have done this damaged can they please report it to the local Gardaí at It is very important that the likes of this should never happen again and anyone attending Clonbonny should be able to park their cars in the knowledge that when they return there will be no damage done to their car. Our depleted senior team travelled to Mullinalaghta for a Leader cup game with the home side. Going to Mullinalaghta in itself is a tough task but going there without a full squad made the task much tougher. The lads fought hard and done their best but they were beaten by a stronger side. On Friday night next in Clonbonny the senior team will take on Granard in the Leader Cup at 7.30pm and we would encourage as many as possible to come out and support this young side finding their feet in senior football. There is no doubting our ability but our age profile is our drawback. We will get better as we go along as the young team will learn lots from the opening games. Confidence and support are two vital ingredients towards their development and we look forward to a lot of both on Friday night in Clonbonny. The fabulous Brave Giant will play St. Mary s Hall on Saturday 7 th May. This is one of the most promising bands in Ireland and it will be without doubt be a fabulous night for the younger generation well the younger generation than this writer. Admission 10 Fixtures Upcoming club fixtures are: Friday next 29 th Leader Cup in Clonbonny at 7.30pm against St. Mary s Granard. Friday 29 th U14 Div.1 v Longford Slashers in Dunbeggan at 7pm. Thursday 3 rd May U14 Div.3 away to Sothern Gaels in Cashel at 7pm. Thursday 5 th May away to St. Colmcille s in Fr. Mc Gee Park and on Sunday 8 th May the Reserve League team are away to Cashel in Cashel. Lá na gclub will take place on Sunday 8 th May, this is an ideal opportunity for the club and parish to embrace the day. The club represent our parish and it will be fabulous to see everyone out taking part or just spectating at the event taking place on the day. On Friday evening last our Minor team travelled to Newtownforbes to take on Clonguish Óg in the Special Minor League Final. It was a great match and despite being three players short our lads put up a wonderful performance despite coming out on the losing side by 4 points. The game was in the melting pot right up to the end but if we took our early goal chances there is a very strong possibility that the result would have been much different. For both sides it was an excellent game of football open and fluent throughout and excellently refereed

12 by Jimmy Mc Cormack. We commiserate with our players and congratulate Clonguish Óg on their winning of the trophy. Sent from Mail for Windows 10
