They were one of just eleven winners, with the awards going to organisations and local people who do extraordinary things. CROKE PARK AUDIT At the Down v Tyrone Allianz League Game in Newry we had a visit from Croke Park Finance Manager Kathy Slattery, to evaluate how we manage our turnstile operations on Match Day. The feedback was very positive and is a good testimony to the team of gate men under the direction of County Treasurer Brendan Fitzpatrick. There were some recommendations made which will have to be implemented at future fixtures, the first of these is that we must have a designated Turnstile for Under 16s only. This will be in operation on Sunday for the Down Cork game and we would ask patrons to co operate with stewards to ensure that only Under 16s pass through this stile, there will be an adjoining stile for Adults to allay fears of families being separated. In addition we will have designated helpers to ensure that our youngest followers pass through the stiles quickly and efficiently. We ask all of those who are over 16 to please use the Adult or Student/Seniors Turnstiles which will all be open on Sunday and at all fixtures. EXTRA TIME DOWN GAA NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2013 Patsy Russell and Seána Talbot, the faces and voices of Destination Newry s Down GAA coverage, were presented with the award for their gleaming humorous and enlightening commentary on local GAA games to an audience of local people who are unable to attend matches due to illness or disability. Matches can also be viewed by ex -pats across the world which makes this a very unique service. Indeed Seána & Patsy are recognized widely in GAA circles and across the world from New South Wales to New York and China to Canada and now have a following of thousands benefiting from this invaluable service. OfficialDownGAA Speaking at the awards, Patsy and Seána paid tribute to those behind the project and reinforced Destination Newry s ongoing commitment to high-quality news and sports coverage for those at home and abroad. LÁMHLEABHAR 2013 It is the intention of Down GAA to have a Lámhleabhar with the Clubs for the commencement of fixtures in 2013, we will be producing what will in a sense be a contact book, it will not include fixtures but instead will concentrate on Club Contacts, County Contacts and include an updated version of the County Bye Laws. Please ensure that your contact details for your Club or your sub committee have been submitted to: administrator1.down@gaa.ie CLUB VISITS 2013 The Club Visits by members of County Management for 2013 got underway on Sunday Night last when Seamus Ryan, Paul Blaney and Seamus Ennis attended a meeting of the St Paul's Club. 2 Page 2 EXTRA TIME Communications is one of the most important activities in the Association. What is the role of the PRO? Main Duties: The main duties of the PRO are summarised as follows: Work as part of a team along with the other club officers, team mentors and the various sub committees in the club Promote the club to the local community and beyond using all available methods of communication Provide team lists, match results and all relevant information to the County PRO on time Keep records for historical purposes Make sure the Club id well presented What does working as part of a team involve? Effective communication in a club requires a team effort. Every officer and member has some part to play in communication, but the PRO is the key person when it comes to communicating to the general public. A PRO can only do his/her job as required if there is a good relationship with all other club officers, team mentors etc and if they provide information when required. Communications in the Club Communications in the club operates in two levels: Internal communication External communication Internal communication Involves communicating with: Club officers Executive Committee and Sub- Committee members Players Mentors Parents Active members (volunteers) Internal communication is the job of all officers, particularly the club secretary External Communication involves communicating with: Supporters The community in general Parents Sponsors Media County Board External communication is mainly the job of the Club PRO How does the PRO promote the club? The PRO promotes the club through a positive image. This is a key role because encouraging new volunteers, successful fundraising etc. depends on the club having a good image THE ROLE OF THE PUBLIC RELATIONS OFFICER in the locality. It is important that the club does not have to be winning all the time. A good club has good governance, is well organised and has good policies in place. Positive stories in the club can include: Anniversary of past successes Fundraising success Club development Club competitions Club player role on County teams Special visitors to club New initiatives introduced Methods of communication in the club Local Newspapers normally accept club notes for free of charge and all clubs should avail of this service. There are a number of points to remember when writing the newspaper report: Arrange with the editor of the local paper to have a weekly GAA/Camogie column published Use report to create a positive image Report on all activities making all parties feel important Make sure each section referred to is brief and to the point Include all club activities Do not use article to vent anger or frustration with any aspect of the club as this will cause embarrassment to the club, remember the purpose of the article is to portray the club in appositive image Submit photographs of a quality suitable for printing and submit it on time Bring camera to all games Match Reports must include: Team and subs Final score/half time score Goals, top scorers, exceptional displays Main action points Scores and scorers Consequence of result When writing juvenile reports praise the entire team and subs! Bulk Text Message SMS messaging is a quick method of communication, particularly for short and urgent messages. It is relatively inexpensive as most people have mobile phones Note: When communication with juveniles, club messages should be sent to parents / guardians mobiles only Club Newsletter/bulletin Another effective method of communication with members and supporters informing them of the progress within the club and a method of keeping people informed of all club activities. s and Websites Using is also quick and inexpensive way of communicating with club members. A website is an ideal way of keeping those outside the community informed. A well presented website will give a good positive image. It should be up to date and include photographs of past and present teams as well as a history of the club. It should include contact details and provide information of facilities available. An out of date website does not present a good image of the club. Local Radio Arrange to have local events included in sports programmes on a regular basis Other types of Publicity Posters Car stickers Church bulletins Social Networks County GAA Website Working with the County PRO A GOOD RELATIONSHIP WITH THE COUNTY PRO IS ESSENTIAL The club PRO must ensure that all club notes and any other required information is with the County PRO on time including team list for match programmes in order to reduce the burden of work on the County PRO. Keeping Records The PRO plays an important part in keeping records. Retain all press cuttings, published articles and photographs on file as the history of the club will be compiled from them. Photos, past and present, should always be displayed on the club notice board. This gives people a sense of belonging and being part of a great GAA community. Club Presentation The PRO is responsible for ensuring that the Club is well presented to the general public. It is important that the club is always neat and tidy and clean and toilet facilities are presentable. A PRO is not expected to physically to do all this but they should ensure that the work is carried out. For games the pitch should be lined, the grass cut, scoreboard available if possible. Players should be properly kitted out as players turning up in different colour of socks or skirts presents a bad image of the Club. What Qualities should a PRO have? Reliable Good communication skills Approachable Good team player Pride in doing the job Knowledge of the rules of Association Good background knowledge of the club

9 Volume I1 Issue I1 January 2013 WORKSHOP WITH YOUNG FARMERS Ulster GAA are involved in a series of workshops with the Young Farmers of Ulster. Clubs are invited to attend one workshop, specifically focussed at year olds. The workshops aim to engage with young people on how they view their community. It tackles some of the issues around stereotypes of groups such as the GAA. Feedback from previous workshops found that it was positive that young GAA members came away with a better sense of where the GAA club has came from, its ethos and so on. This is a unique opportunity for young people, and something which will add greatly to CVs. Also it is valuable experience for the Learning For Life and Work module which all schoolgoers must complete in Keystage 3 and 4.
