3 Fáiltiú an Chathaoirligh Is cúis áthais dom fíor fáilte a fhearadh romhaimh go Páirc Thomáis Uí héalaithe, Mainistir Ó dtórna le haghaidh Cliuchí Leacheannias Chraobh Sinsear Iománaíochta an Chontae. Is tráthnóna speisialta í dos na h-imreoirí, na h-oifigigh, lucht leanúna agus na réiteoirí. Tá súil agam go mbeidh sár chluichí spoirtiúla againn. I welcome the players, mentors and supporters from St. Brendan s, Lixnaw, Ballyduff and Kilmoyley to Abbeydorney for the semi-finals of the Garveys Super Valu County Senior Hurling Championship. I hope that the players and supporters enjoy the games and that they will be played in the best sporting manner. Welcome also to the referees, their umpires and linesmen. The County Hurling Championship games are important sporting occasion for the players who take great pride in representing their clubs. This year the games are being staged at the club venues and the club officers and volunteers at each of those venues can be justifiably proud of their efforts. Their hard work and planning the hosting of the games is further testament of the tremendous community effort that is generated by the County Senior Hurling Championship. Hopefully the semi-finals will be entertaining, hard fought and closely contested right up to the full time whistle and played in the true spirit of sportsmanship. The teams are well prepared by their management teams and for that reason we expect to see great games of hurling. A sincere word of thanks to the Kerry Senior, Minor & U21 Hurling Teams, the players and the management teams led by Senior Manager Eamonn Kelly, Minor manager, Ian Brick and U21 manager, Joe Walsh and also to the players and coaches of our Hurling Development Squads. Our Minor Team play in the Final of the All-Ireland Minor B Hurling Championship next Saturday and we wish them the very best of luck. The Senior Team manager, Eamonn Kelly and his management team in their second year in charge led the team to achieve promotion to Div. 1B in the Allianz Hurling League and followed that with victory in the Christy Ring Cup Final. We are hugely indebted to Eamonn for his achievements with the team in his two years in charge. His successor as manager has a strong foundation to build on for the big challenges that face the team next year. In 2016 our Senior Hurling team will not only be in a higher division of the league but also join the Provincial Qualifier Group of the Liam McCarthy Cup in which they will play a round robin of games against Carlow, Offaly and Westmeath. The top two teams then qualify for the quarterfinals of the Leinster Hurling Championship. It is important to pay tribute to the Hurling Officer, Ger McCarthy, Vice Chairman, Diarmuid Ó Sé and Central Council Delegate, John Joe O Carroll for their work this year with our Inter County Teams. The Abbeydorney pitch is dedicated to the memory of Tom Healy. Tom devoted his life to hurling and his work as an administrator is rightly acknowledged by the Abbeydorney Club. He had a great interest in the development of our underage intercounty teams and would indeed be very proud of the achievements of our Senior Hurling Team this year. SPONSORS I take this opportunity to thank our Senior Championship sponsors, Garveys Super Valu for their continued sponsorship, we are very grateful for their genuine interest and generous support of our club players. Thanks also to our Kerry Team Sponsors, Kerry Group, our competition sponsors and associate sponsors. Thanks to all the supporters who gave our Inter County Teams such loyal support in 2015 and to all who continue to support our fund raising activities at home and overseas, Cáirde Chiarraí, Night at the Dogs, Golf Classic, Car Draw, Kerry GAA Lotto, Ticket Scheme, Church Gate Collection etc. Enjoy the games. 4 GARVEYS SUPERVALU SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI FINALS match preview LIXNAW versus ST. BRENDANS Saturday evening s semi-final meeting between Lixnaw and St Brendan s will be eagerly awaited by Kerry hurling fans. The last two winners of the Kerry Senior Hurling County Championship have got to know each other pretty well over the past few seasons both on the hurling and football fields. These two remarkable dual clubs have sampled so much success in recent years. Their feats both in the county and further afield have been a credit to the GAA in Kerry and long may their dual success continue. These two sides have been the form teams in Kerry hurling over the past two years. St Brendan s beat Lixnaw in the County Final after a replay in Lixnaw then went on to defeat St Brendan s in the 2014 semi-final after a replay before going on to win the championship. Mark Foley s men have looked very impressive again this year and Lixnaw are many people s favourites to retain their title. The same could not be said of St Brendan s who struggled in the earlier rounds of the championship before putting on a hurling master class in their quarterfinal annihilation of Causeway. Pat O Driscoll s side were also really impressive when they defeated Ballyduff in Ballyduff to win the delayed 2014 County League title a couple of months back and because of that, their dismal form in the opening rounds of the championship was a real surprise. The meeting of these two deadly rivals sylvester hennessy Kerry s eye GAA Correspondent should be another fascinating encounter between two teams who will know each other like the backs of their hands. The new x factor to take into account in the analysis of this game is the fact that this clash will take place in Abbeydorney and not in Austin Stack Park as was previously the case with championship clashes between these two. The Abbeydorney surface is perfect for hurling but the perception is that Austin Stack Park is a much bigger playing field than most North Kerry hurling venues. If that is indeed the case then space will be at a premium for both teams to display their undoubted abilities. Lixnaw have been the form team in They were very impressive in their win over Causeway but so too were St Brendan s so the form line is difficult to St Brendans Darren Dineen gets his hurley in front to knock the ball away from Causeway's Muiris Delaney in the Senior Hurling Championship Round 3 game in Kilmoyley.

5 Anthony Fealy Causeway in action against Darragh Shanahan Lixnaw in the Kerry Senior Hurling Championship Round 2A game at Abbeydorney. gauge. What we do know is that Lixnaw have a superb forward line now that the two Conway brothers, Shane and Michael, are in harness alongside the likes of James Flaherty, Ricky Heffernan, Enda Galvin and Colin Sheehy. John Buckley was also outstanding for the Kerry minors recently alongside Jermey McKenna so Lixnaw have an abundance of firepower in attack. St Brendan s are a little bit more reliant on John Egan for the bulk of their scores although Eric Leen, Kevin Skinner, Tim Hannafin, Daithí Griffin and Kieran Fitzgerald have all chipped in with key scores in recent games. If one factor is to tip the balance in this contest then Lixnaw s greater all round scoring ability should decide the contest. In previous meetings between these two there has been little to choose between both sides and defences have normally been dominant. Both sides have gritty and talented defenders. Lixnaw have the Corridan s but St Brendan s have the Horgan brothers plus a bang in-form county man in the shape of Darren Dineen. This is sure to be another tense and tight affair. Lixnaw deserve the mantle of favourites but a St Brendan s win would in no way be a surprise to anyone present in Abbeydorney on Saturday evening. A draw is as likely a result as any such. We ve already seen so many draws in the hurling championship in recent years. There is very little to choose between any of the 8 teams in North Kerry at present and that has made for an intriguing championship. The fact that the games are being played at North Kerry venues has levelled the playing field even further. If I am forced to go for one team on Saturday evening then Lixnaw look the most likely to book a place in their 5th final in 6 years. Over the past few years there has been little between these sides and this time it was no different. At the first time of asking, the tie ended all square at 9 points apiece. The main influences on the game were the respective free takers, Ricky Heffernan and John Egan who put over 4 each. However it was a last gasp opportunity for Lixnaw, a free in front of goals from just 50 metres out that Heffernan narrowly failed to convert, that sent the sides to a replay. Both sides faced off again at Austin Stack Park on Saturday, 13 September where another epic contest ensued. Lixnaw fielded slightly stronger for the replay, although with a replacement goalkeeper, young Robert Silles. Back into the team came Pat Corridon, Paul Galvin and Mike Conway. 14 GARVEYS SUPERVALU SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI FINALS match preview BALLYDUFF versus KILMOYLEY Championship clashes between fierce rivals Ballyduff and Kilmoyley, do not build character, they reveal character. Little wonder, because between them, they have 46 championships won, and sit proudly on top of the roll of honour, one and two. So can Ballyduff move a step closer to title number 25 or will Kilmoyley repeat last year s semi-final win and move to the cusp of their 23rd title? The answer my friends, in the words of Bob Dylan, is blowing in the wind, because, nobody could predict the outcome of this mouth-watering Sunday evening clash, unless they had mystic qualities. Looking at the form lines of both sides in this year s championship, the only real conclusion one could arrive at is that both are extremely lucky to be in the semi-final at all. Kilmoyley have only a sprinkling of the sides that won six championships in the noughties, while Ballyduff are also down a number of key men, such as Podge Boyle, Crotta's Jordan Conway and Kilmoyley's Dougie Fitzell in action in The Garvey's Super Valu Senior Hurling Championship Round 1 Drawn game at Causeway. mortimer murphy GAA Correspondent Paud Costello, P J Gorman and Ally O Connor while Liam Boyle s knees must be creaking like a door hung on rusty and worn hinges. Kilmoyley will be the first to admit that they were fortunate to draw with Crotta O Neill s first day out and indeed Crotta is the common denominator when assessing both sides as the Kilflynn lads must be one of the unluckiest championship losers in recent history. Remember Kilmoyley trailed Crotta by eight points at half time in that first round game and John Meyler was forced to introduce an injured Daniel Collins and Adrian Royle to rescue the Lerrig boys. It was the precocious Collins who rescued them, and has contributed 1-22 of their total to date, which is eight points more than their average for their three games to-date. The replay again saw Kilmoyley in trouble and Crotta might well have won it, but Kilmoyley prevailed, again driven on by Daniel Collins. It was then onto Ballyduff on a wet and windy Bank Holiday Monday night, and this time Shaun Young did the damage with his two goals and Daniel Collins, with one leg heavily strapped, did the rest, in a game, where the experience of Tom Murnane, James McCarthy and Sean Dowling was critical against the youthful enthusiasm of Abbeydorney, without the O Leary brothers. Turning to Ballyduff, they lost their opening round game to a fancied Causeway side which subsequently left that form down badly, but worse still, they lost the mercurial Padraig Boyle for the season. It was then onto Lixnaw on a Tuesday evening, to face

15 Ballyduff's Anthony Carroll and Abbeydorney's James O'Connor in action in the Garveys Senior Hurling Championship Round 3 game at Lixnaw Crotta and again, it would fair to say that they huffed and puffed in normal time to match Crotta O Neill s ferocity and hunger and looked to be making their exit in injury time, when Crotta missed a scoreable free. However in extra time, the old Ballyduff resurfaced as the Boyles, Liam, Aiden and Mikey, and the O Gradys began to hurl in the tradition of Ballyduff and a sublime goal from Garry O Brien, allied to the accuracy of Bobby O Sullivan, saw Ballyduff get over the line by six, but it was much tighter than that. Then it was an Abbeydorney side, with the powerful O Leary brother s Brendan and young Michael, who almost derailed Ballyduff s ambitions, and P J Keane s first half goals, had the champions reeling. Again Bobby O Sullivan proved to be a match winner and two late points saw Ballyduff into the semis, but not in impressive fashion. So two sides meet, who have not exactly shone this year and if you were to take the scoring returns of Daniel Collins and Bobby O Sullivan away, then neither Ballyduff nor Kilmoyley appear to have a good scoring spread in attack. Throw in Gary O Brien and Shaun Young and then you can see where this game will be won and lost. While both defences are strong and tough, the game will be decided, by whichever set of forwards get on top and give their scorers in chief a dig out. So can the likes of Mikey Boyle, Eoin Ross, Aiden Boyle, Barry O Grady and possibly Kevin Junior if he returns, do enough damage against a tenacious no nonsense defence, who remember shut out Ballyduff last year. Or will it be Adrian Royle, Shaun Young, Robert Collins, Sean Maunsell or Jordan Brick, who will give Daniel Collins a helping hand? VERDICT: This is truthfully impossible to call. I was impressed by Kilmoyley against Abbeydorney but then you write off Ballyduff at your peril! 18 Remember the Game? 2014 S.H.C. Semi Final CiLL MHaOiLe 0 12 BaiLe dubh 0-10 Kilmoyley's Dougie Fitzell is in control of this situation in the Senior County Hurling Championship semi Final with Ballyduff in Ballyduff came into this semi-final on the back of a defeat to St. Brendan s and wins over Causeway and Crotta. Kilmoyley were very much an outside bet at the start of the championship but earlier round wins, co-incidentally also against Causeway and Crotta put them through to the penultimate stage. Kilmoyley started well with Tom Murnane influential at centre back and Paudie O'Connor likewise at midfield. Ballyduff lined out with two changes from their selected team, were minus Padraig Boyle and had a number of positional switches, most notably the switch of Bobby O'Sullivan to centre field. Sean Maunsell opened the scoring with a 9th minute point from play and minor player, Robert Collins, added 2 more in the opening quarter, with Bobby O'Sullivan replying with a pointed free for Ballyduff. In fact, he was to score all of his sides four first half scores from frees. Meanwhile Kilmoyley hit 9 points, all but one from play to lead at the break by 9 points to 4. On the re-start, Padraig Boyle came on as a substitute and Bobby O'Sullivan and Daniel Collins exchanged early pointed frees. Sean Maunsell pointed for Kilmoyley on 40 minutes to give them a six point lead, 0 11 to 0-5. However they were not to score again until the 56th minute. Bobby O'Sullivan's meanwhile continued to punish any fouls conceded and he put over 3 more to leave the deficit at just 3 points entering the final quarter. O Sullivan again, his sides only scorer, reduced the gap to just 2 points on 53 minutes as fortunes ebbed and flowed. Kilmoyley worked hard to retain their lead. Maunsell gave them some relief in the 56th minute to put a goal between the sides. In a nerve racking finish, another Ballyduff point again left it at 2 points.
