I welcome the teams from South Kerry and Shannon Rangers, Dingle and Killarney Legion to Austin Stack Park on this Saturday evening. Reaching the quarterfinals of the Garveys Super Valu County Senior Football Championship is a huge achievement for the players, their mentors and supporters. Likewise it is an important occasion for the players, mentors and supporters of Ardfert and Castleisland Desmonds in the semi-final of the Castleisland Co-Op Mart County Intermediate Football Championship. It is my wish that everybody enjoys the games and that they will be played in the best sporting manner. Welcome also to the referees, their umpires and linesmen. The teams are well prepared by their management teams and for that reason we expect to see great games of football and I am confident the players are capable of delivering very entertaining games of County Championship football at its best. All six teams are here on merit and they each have the talent, skills and commitment to win. Ciarraí abú Congratulations to the Kerry Senior & Minor Football teams and their management teams on winning the double at Croke Park. The celebrations of the past two weeks have reinforced very strongly that the Sam Maguire & Tom Markham Cups are most welcome in Kerry. Thanks to the supporters at home and abroad. Your confidence in us, your patience and financial support has been well rewarded. Eamonn Fitzmaurice and Jack O Connor, thanks for all the joy you gave us with your inspirational management. Thanks to our Kerry Team Sponsors, Kerry Group and our associate sponsors. Without their generous backing in these difficult economic times it would be impossible to provide the necessary financial investment to maintain the high standards that we always strive to achieve. Thanks to you, our supporters, who gave our Inter County Teams such loyal support in 2014 and to all who continue to support our fund raising activities at home and overseas, Cáirde Chiarraí, Night at the Dogs, Golf Classic, Car Draw, Kerry GAA Lotto, Ticket Scheme, Church Gate Collection etc. SPONSOrS I take this opportunity to thank our sponsors, Garveys Super Valu for their continued sponsorship of our Senior County Football & Hurling Championships. 8 match preview south KERRY versus shannon RanGERs sylvester hennessy Kerry s eye GAA Correspondent shannon Rangers return to the big time but south Kerry are favourites for the semi Finals! Shannon Rangers are back in the business end of the championship for the first time in 30 years. It s actually that length of time since the Divisional side qualified for the quarter-final stages. Not since the 1970 s were they a potent force in championship football. Back then players like Ogie Moran, Eoin Liston and Johnny Bunyan powered them to victory. Their last County Championship win was actually back in 1977, some 37 years ago. South Kerry on the other hand has a much more recent history of success. In the previous decade they won 4 titles including a wonderful 3 in-a-row. Their new look side face a Shannon Rangers that will not be lacking in confidence. They surprised many people when they recorded a two point victory over Kilcummin in the opening round and they then went on to defeat another club side, St Michael s Foilmore in the 3rd round. Their two stars that afternoon were Mikey Boyle and Beale s Ger O Gorman and both are injury doubts coming into this game. Midfielder Kenneth Sheehy s fitness is also in doubt due an Achilles tendon problem. The Rangers defence features county star Shane Enright. A win for his Division would of course mean that the Tarbert man could become Kerry Captain in 2015 so there is an extra incentive for the talented defender this weekend. Kerry All- Ireland Under 21 medal winner from 2008, Colin O Mahony, is another defender of high quality. The Shannon Rangers half back line is also very strong with three men who have worn the Kerry jersey at numerous levels in the past in Ambrose Lanigan, Jeremy King and Danny Wrenn. David Culhane is another who can slot into the defence. The defender was Ambrose Lanigan (Shannon Rangers) part of the Kerry set up earlier this year and he also won a Sigerson Cup with UCC. Kerry Junior Paul Kennelly, Kiki Mulvihill, Barry O Grady, Mikey Boyle and possibly Padraig Boyle could all feature in attack. Young Ger O Sullivan from Tarbert is another who could get a run. South Kerry s challenge is backboned by their county men. Killian Young, Bryan Sheehan and Declan O Sullivan will all be looking to the opportunity to add to their medal tallies, young Paul O Donoghue was also part of the 2014 senior panel. There are also a number of Kerry s 2014 All Ireland Junior Finalists on the starting 15. Denis Daly, Brendan O Sullivan, Greg Gibson, Kevin Dwyer, Ciarán Keating and Fionán Clifford all feature. South Kerry may be not be the force of old but they certainly pose a 8

9 serious threat the longer they remain in the championship. view from the dressing Rooms Speaking to Kerry s Eye, Selector Dan Fitzpatrick is happy with the South Kerry squad but the preparations have been hindered due to the commitment of the county players, It has been a long while since we have been together, with so many players involved with the juniors and seniors. At the same time we are looking forward to the game. Shannon Rangers Team manager, Liam Weir, is hopeful that his team can cause another upset; We are not going to Tralee to make up the numbers; South Kerry has a massive pedigree and will be raging hot favourites to win. However, we are prepared to give it our best shot and see what happens. verdict Shannon Rangers will love the label of underdogs once more but it is hard to predict anything other than a South Kerry win. The men from the southern peninsula have strength right throughout their starting 15 and should be good enough to advance to the semi-final. verdict: south KeRRy PATHS TO THE QUARTERFINALS SOUTH KERRY: Round 1: South Kerry 1-14 Kerins O Rahilly s 1-7; Round 3: South Kerry 1-10 Milltown/Castlemaine 0-9. 14 match preview dingle versus KillaRnEY legion O donoghue may hold the key as legion take on dingle A mouth watering SFC quarterfinal is in store when two of the younger club sides in the competition clash at the Austin Stack Park on Saturday afternoon. As Dingle and Legion go head to head, in would take a brave man to predict the outcome. This could be one of the games of the weekend, and while evens is the best you will probably get on either Dingle or Legion, whoever does hit form on the day and win, could do so by six to eight points. The reason for such a foolhardy prediction is that both sides possess devastating finishers who could rattle the net more than once, so it may not be a game for the faint hearted. Legion possess the best forward in Ireland all summer in James O Donoghue who could cause darnage if allowed a free run on goal, while Dingle have a bang in form Paul Geaney who got that vital goal inside a minute in the All-Ireland Final, and who, since the age of sixteen, has been a prolific goal poacher. So an O Donoghue or a Paul Geaney one man show and Brian Kelly and Gavin Curran could spend more time leaping through the air than on the ground. Dingle looked a precocious side in 2012 when they reached the county final, only to be pummelled by the Crokes and since then Daithí Geaney has left for pastures new in Meath, while Tommy Griffin has retired and now trains to team. However, Dingle has now a transfusion of young blood, with All-Ireland Minor and Hogan Cup winners, Tom O Sullivan, Matthew Flaherty, Marc O Connor, Barry O Sullivan, Conor Geaney and Cathal Bambury (who will miss out due to appendicitis) and 14 Mark Evans (Dingle) MortIMer MUrphy GAA Correspondent Kerry U-21 s Darragh O Sullivan and Padraig O Connor. However their League form has plummeted because of the six minors and two seniors being missing for most of their games, so advantage Legion in that respect. Killarney Legion, despite having Brian Kelly, Jonathan Lyne and James involved with Kerry, have been promoted to Division 1 for next year, go up as champions, and had not lost a League game until last weekend when Spa beat them on an occasion when Legion had half a team and Spa played superbly. The only other game that Legion have lost since Peter Keane has taken over the reins was to East Kerry in the first round of the Championship, but they then beat St Kieran s and ended Crokes 5 in-a-row ambitions subsequently. So

15 Legion are a serious outfit. So it will all depend on the match ups and tactically both John Flannery and Peter Keane could be classed as masters of deception, and impossible to read in advance. Once presumes Padraig O Connor will be deployed by Dingle to try and curb O Donoghue but he may need help and it might be a wing forward like Matthew Flaherty, that will drop back. Tom O Sullivan (if fit) will probably shadow Conor Keane who beat St Kieran s almost on his own, while Brendan Kelliher will act as stopper at centre back, with Kerry Minor Marc O Connor possibly keeping tabs on Tom Moriarty who once scored four goals against Dingle. At the other end, the Legion s Padraig O Connor or Podge as he is better known, will surely be given the task of trying to curb Paul Geaney, with Chris Davies, who has bags of pace, also acting as back up. Jonathan Lyne may get the job of marking Mikey Geaney, but Geaney will roam and could start at centre back. Danny Sheahan will act as the rock, and may have Joe Sheehy to worry about, while Damien O Sullivan is a solid centre back. Marc Evans and Conor Geaney are two more for the Legion to worry about but if O Donoghue and Geaney are going to deliver the goods, they will need ball and thus midfield will decide this game, in my humble opinion. The brothers Barry and Darragh O Sullivan will face AFL bound Padraig Lucey and either Shaun Keane or Kevin Breen and whoever wins this battle may win the war. Barry has been flying all year but he is only 18, while Lucey is 24 and more experienced, so if Lucey wins this battle, then Legion will more PATHS TO THE QUARTERFINALS KILLARNEY LEGION: Round 1: Legion 1-16 East Kerry 1-19; Round 2: Legion 2-13 St Kieran s 0-17; Round 3: Legion 0-17 Dr Crokes Average Scored: 1-15; Average Conceded: 0-18; Scorers: Conor Keane 0-20, James O Donoghue 0-9, Tom Moriarty 1-4, Jonathan Lyne 1-3, Billy McGuire 1-1, David O Sullivan 0-4, Danny Sheehan 0-2, Kevin Breen, Mike O Sullivan, Damien O Sullivan 0-1 each. But Andrew Garnett gave the Legion midfielder a tough time last week, so Barry will not shirk the challenge and Dingle need Darragh O Sullivan to step up big time and if he does, then advantage Dingle. verdict: I will not sit on the fence but it could go either way!
