Kerry Clubs in All ireland series the introduction of the All ireland Junior & intermediate competitions by iár Uachtarán Cumann luchcleas Gael and fellow Kerry man Seán Kerry has proven to be one the best initiatives ever introduced in our Association s long and proud history. each Club regardless of size in every part of this Country and abroad has the possibility of playing in an All ireland Final on the hallowed turf of Croke Park. it is one week exactly since Kerry s Glenbeigh-Glencar defeated Rock St. Patricks of tyrone in the All ireland Junior football Club Final. in a tight encounter the Kerry side came out on top continuing our County s incredible success rate at this level. We wish to heartily congratulate Glenbeigh Glencar on this historic victory for the Club and now look forward to welcoming back the various players onto our county teams. Unfortunately Kenmare lost narrowly in the All ireland intermediate football Championship semi final to eventual winners Westport. Dr. Crokes of Killarney had an impressive win in the Senior Club Semi Final over Corofin of Galway and we wish them every success in their All ireland Final appearance against Slaughtneil of Derry on St. Patricks Day. Kerry under 21 s i would like to wish our U-21 Footballers all the very best in their quest for success this year. they begin their campaign on Wednesday March 8th in a home fixture against Clare at Austin Stack Park tralee. Fitzgerald Stadium & Rugby World Cup As many of you may know ireland is currently in the process on compiling a bid to host the Rugby World Cup in Fitzgerald Stadium Killarney has been shortlisted as one of the possible venues should the bid be successful. Much work has been carried out on the Stadium over the past number of years but there is still a substantial amount of upgrade works required. i wish to take this opportunity to thank both the operational and fundraising arms of the Fitzgerald Stadium Committee along with the business people of Killarney for their financial support over the past number of years. the continuation of this financial support is imperative for the further development and sustainability of the Stadium into the future. buíochas thanks to all our supporters and patrons who travelled her today and who attend our games in such numbers. the attendance s generally at the Allianz Football league games to date has been fantastic. i hope that everyone enjoys this afternoon s game and a safe return home to our visitors from Monaghan here today. 6 match preview IT S almost a case of the glass half full, glass half empty argument following Kerry s opening two games in the Allianz league. in the case of the former comes the county s first win in their opening league match since 2012 while the latter would be based on the nature of the defeat to Mayo from a promising position in the first period. Whether the conclusion of the Donegal game manifested itself a bit more in the defeat to Mayo is questionable but eamon Fitzmaurice isn t in the situation where a win is an absolute must yet with points on the board after two games for only the second time in his five years as manager. today s game with Monaghan and next weekend s trip to Roscommon offer the ALLIANZ FOOTBALL LEAGUE - ROINN 1 - BÁBHTA 3 Kerry v Monaghanby JASON O CONNOR possibility of points before the game everyone seems to be talking about at least a month in advance in Dublin s visit to tralee on Saturday March 18th. talk about a sell-out does add to anticipation about that particular night after St Patricks Day but eamon Fitzmaurice will be the first to guard against any sense of the two matches beforehand being overlooked in favour of the battle with the reigning league and Allireland Champions. After being taken off in the loss to Mayo, Paul Geaney is Kerry s biggest injury concern ahead of today. it might be a bit too simplistic to say that the turnaround in the Mayo encounter was directly related to his injury in that CIARRAÍ V MUINEACHÁN encounter but Geaney s present good form will be most wanted with the U-21 contingent, Dr Crokes players and a few other latecomers out for the time being. Shane enright s return after the unfortunate collision that forced him off early against Donegal will also be welcomed today as a Conor McManus led forward line has proven in the past that it has the ability to take down the Kingdom on home turf. the Farney County defeated Kerry in tralee only two years ago and though they are still to break their All-ireland Quarter-Final duct in Championship they remain formidable opposition in the league. With victories in their opening games away to Mayo Paul Geaney (Ciarraí) controls the ball ahead of Dessie Mone (Muineachán) with Kieran Donaghy (Ciarraí) and Vinny Corey (Muineachán) looking on when the sides met in the Allianz League in Austin Stack Park in 2015 (Photo: Kerry s Eye). 06

7 Jonathan Lyne (Ciarraí) gets his kick in with Paul Finlay (Muineachán) in close attention when the sides met in the Allianz League in Austin Stack Park in 2015 (Photo: Kerry s Eye). and at home to Cavan, Malachy O Rourke s side might just entertain grander ambitions in the league if they can come away with the right result here today. this is their first visit to Killarney since 2010, where a four point victory for the Kingdom in the final round of the league that year saw them avoid relegation with a 1-16 to 1-12 win. Bar last year, relegation battles as opposed to title contention has been more the order of the day for Kerry this decade in the league but it is still too early to make a judgement on what Kerry will be facing into come the end of the campaign. the league will still be viewed as a mechanism for development in the county but with the margin for error smaller with the abolition of the semi-final stage of the competition all points will be hard earned between here and the first weekend of April. A more consistent 70 minute display will be the initial target you feel for Kerry today considering some of the flat periods in the opening two encounters. Killian Young and James O Donoghue should bolster Kerry s ranks while Peter Crowley will continue in the captain s role for the next three games at least with Dr Crokes advancement to the All-ireland Senior Club Final delaying their announcement of the nominee for 2017 until the destination of the Andy Merrigan Cup is known. With the U-21 s now focussing on their own campaign in the last provincial and All-ireland Championships bearing such a name, more opportunities will arise for fringe players. Jack Barry and Jack Savage have made impressions so far with Adrian Spillane s name continuing to crop up in discussions about selection. the Kerry management appear to still be more interested in finding out about players as opposed to getting results judging by the rather measured comments by eamon Fitzmaurice in the aftermath of the defeat to Mayo but a result is definitely needed here today to get more breathing space to do some more experimenting up in Dr Hyde Park ahead of that game with Dublin. What position Kerry will be in when they return to Fitzgerald Stadium on the first Sunday in April for their final league game against tyrone remains to be seen but wins in matches such as today go a long way towards taking the pressure off. Imríodh an cluiche i Staid an Ghearaltaigh i gcill Áirne ar an Domhnach, 11ú Aibreán. As events transpired both sides survived and while doing so served up a game of reasonably good quality. However it was a game during which Kerry were always in control, turning in a very workmanlike performance while Monaghan never gave up the fight and did well to stay in touch and keep the deficit at just 4 points at the final whistle. Timmy Sheehan in his match report in The Kerryman newspaper noted some key moments from the game. He said that Kerry were in control from the outset and while Monaghan kept pace for long periods, Kerry were always equal to the task and able to respond whenever their dominance and scoring advantage was threatened. He noted that substitute Barry John Keane (who had replaced the injured Colm Cooper), worked tirelessly in an attack, which was inspired by some splendid first half scores from Paul Galvin, and over a prolonged period by the leadership of Kieran Donaghy. Although dominant, Kerry were ahead by just 2 points at half time, 0-9 to 1-4, with Conor McManus crashing home a goal from a penalty rebound on 33 minutes. Yet Kerry started the second half well and in reality had the game well wrapped up by the 51st minute when Bryan Sheehan scored a goal following a sublime pass from Donaghy. Both sides had a player dismissed before the end. The respective managers were Jack O Connor and Seamus McEneaney. 10 His fellow dr Crokes clubman, eamonn Fitzgerald, caught up with him recently. Born in New York in 1967 he will be celebrating his 50th birthday in the not too distant future. He lived in the Big Apple until he was eight years old and moved to Killarney when his parents, eddie and Bridie bought the tatler Jack pub in Plunkett Street and set up a thriving business. His early boyhood memories were of the Sunday visits to Gaelic Park in the Bronx. His dad was in charge of the Carlow team in New York, which drew its players mainly from counties Kerry, Carlow and Cavan. His education in Killarney was in the Mon, St Oliver s Ballycasheen, St Brendan s College and Pallaskenry College in limerick. Among his classmates in the Mon was his best buddy Colm O Shea, who encouraged him to join the Dr Crokes club. in his mid-20s he became involved in coaching and he took charge of the U-14, U-15, U-16 ALLIANZ FOOTBALL LEAGUE - ROINN 1 - BÁBHTA 3 and the Crokes minor team. His most treasured medals won as a player were two minor county leagues and the Under-21 county championship won in 1986, the centenary year of the Dr Crokes club. He was a very competent goalkeeper in those campaigns. The Crokes club means everything to me, he said. He acted as a very popular chairman of the club and helped raise significant funds in sponsorship along with Der Brosnan. With this money the club was able to develop the stand, lighting up to the standard of match play and the terracing in the Bridgefield side of the grounds. those were great years and i got great satisfaction leading Crokes developing its facilities in lewis Road to such a high standard as it is today, he said. County board His first connection with the Kerry county board came in Sean Kelly asked me to help out in fund CIARRAÍ V MUINEACHÁN FOCUS ON PATRICK O SULLIVAN Of his 19 years service with Kerry County board, Patrick O sullivan spent 10 as county development Officer, 4 as Vice Chairman and 5 as County Chairman before stepping down due to the 5 year rule at last december s Convention. in the Corridors of Power - With sean Walsh at Congress in Croke Park 2014 raising for the county board and subsequently many officers of the county board encouraged me to run for office. i was elected county Development Officer and i spent 10 years in that role. i travelled all over the county advising clubs on how to go about getting grants to purchase club grounds and then how to develop the requisite facilities. this was very rewarding work as i got to know so many people throughout the county. THe ecstacy! With eamonn Fitzmaurice following Kerry's victory over donegal in the 2014 All ireland Final. (Photo: sportsfile) 10

11 He then spent four years as vicechairman before taking over the top spot in the county board in 2012 in succession to Jerome Conway a position he held for 5 years. Centre of excellence i asked him for his thoughts now after five years in the chair. it was very satisfying to see the clubs develop their facilities, but it became very obvious to Sean Walsh and myself of the need to develop a Centre of excellence to train and develop the county teams. it was very difficult to get pitches during the winter and early spring because clubs had put so much money into their own pitches that they wanted to close them during the bad weather to recover again for the club playing season. i had this vision of a Centre of excellence to cater for all and it took off from there. it was going to be very costly to deliver to the highest specification, but that did not stop me pursuing this dream. We raised money locally for the centre at Currans and raised considerable funds among the GAA and particularly the Kerry diaspora. We had hugely successful fundraisers particularly in the USA and in england. it took a tremendous amount of co-ordination but i had some great contacts abroad and this proved to be the way in to raise the funds. the buildings have been roofed and the pitches are coming along nicely. All will be ready for the opening in May of this year. it is a dream come true and there is a great sense of satisfaction. Making a presentation to Kerry legend Mick O'dwyer in 2014 in the company of other County board Officers, Peter Twiss, Ger Galvin Tim Murphy Highlight Another highlight during his term as chairman was to see Kerry winning the 2014 All-ireland senior title. i had the right man in charge in eamonn Fitzmaurice and if you have the best people in charge you will succeed, he said. Jack O Connor and Peter Keane also delivered with All ireland minor titles after a famine in this age group for so many years. But can we beat the Dubs at senior level; they appear to be untouchable at present? We have won the minors three years in a row and over the next few years some of these excellent players will make the breakthrough at senior level to take the place of those seniors who are retiring and who served the county so well over so many years. We were very close to defeating the Dubs in these past two years and if you look back on the videos you will see that we got no favours. there was only a kick of the ball between us in the final analysis. i am also very proud of the steady successes of the county hurlers. the role of chairman was fulltime work, even if it was done on a voluntary basis. i enjoyed it and it would not have been possible only for the support in particular of my family, he said. i asked him how life has changed since he left office in December. the big thing is that the phone is more silent. i was constantly on the phone while i was chairman. i will adapt to a more normal life and look forward to getting back in with the Crokes in whatever capacity they want me to work. relax How does he relax? i have made some great friends through the GAA in so many different places and ways and i value their friendships. We have had some great times together. i love listening to U2 and love to cycle. that will be an important part of my rehabilitation as i recover from ankle surgery. that will mean 20 weeks in the rehab boot. (earlier this year he had surgery done on a troublesome ankle injury in Ray Moran s Santry Sports Clinic). i should mention of course Ger Harte and Colm Fuller who were so helpful after my previous surgery. Patrick, if there was a free transfer in the GAA what two players would you buy for Kerry? Without hesitation he mentioned lee Keegan of Mayo and Diarmuid Connolly of Dublin and his outstanding Kerry players of the past 40 years? there were so many great players in the different eras. look at the likes of Mikey Sheehy, John egan, Charlie Nelligan and Jacko from O Dwyer s era. When we weren t winning too many All irelands you had star players such as Maurice Fitzgerald, Seamus Moynihan and the brilliant Connie Murphy. in more recent times you have the Ó Sé brothers, Declan O Sullivan and the brilliant Colm Cooper, just to mention a few. We wish him well. it is always a pleasure to talk to such a pleasant gentleman. launching the Centre of excellence with Kerry Manager eamonn Fitzmaurice and Frank Hayes director of Corporate Affairs Kerry Group. 13 Q & A WITH DICK CLERKIN (MUINEACHÁN)??? dick Clerkin announced his retirement from intercounty football last summer ending his reign as the longest-serving inter-county footballer. The Currin man made his senior debut for Monaghan in late 1999 and played a record 179 games (54 sfc) for his native county during which he scored Q - your father Hugo played for Monaghan during a successful period for the county - did you always want to follow in his footsteps? A - i did. i have few memories of his playing days, however growing up he always conveyed the sense of pride and enjoyment he got from playing with Monaghan. i was also very aware of the respect and appreciation he engendered from his peers and followers. From an early age, this was something i wanted to aspire to. Q - you have just called time on an 18 year senior career - obviously playing with Monaghan has meant an awful lot to you? A - Hugely. i decided very early in my career that i was going to commit to Monaghan for as long as i conceivably could, regardless of the sacrifices and disappointments that might be encountered along the way. Playing for Monaghan was never really a choice, it was just something i had to do, and i worked everything else to facilitate that. Family obviously takes priority over anything, and it was only when this part of my life became heavily impacted on did i start considering a life away from Monaghan. i will miss it terribly, but i am content in the knowledge that i gave as much as i could, for as long as i could. So i have no regrets. Q - looking back over your career - there were obviously some great days - and maybe days that could have been a bit better! A - Not getting past the All ireland Q/F stage in recent years will always rankle with me. We were certainly good enough to go further, and God knows lesser teams than us have. Our performances did not do the team justice and that is the really frustrating thing. But like everything we have done, we never let the disappointments set us back, and in that regard i have full confidence, that glass ceiling will be broken in the not so distant future. Q - What counties or individuals brought the best out of you? A - i always enjoyed playing the big teams on the big days. that nervous energy you get from lining up against a top team or player, in front of a huge crowd helped me to get the best out of myself. You re never as tuned into a match as when lining up against a Darragh Ó Sé or a Sean Cavanagh! Q - if you got the choice at this weekend's Congress, what two or three rule changes would you introduce to improve the game of Gaelic Football? A - Reversal of Black Card rule. Kick-outs have to carry a certain distance. Oh and reversal of Black Card. Did i mention binning the black card?!! Q - After 18 years in the Monaghan Jersey, where to now for dick Clerkin? i have taken on the role of Player/Manager with my club Currin this year, and i am really enjoying that challenge so far. i enjoy coaching and trying to bring the standards and learnings gained as an intercounty player back to my club. Needless to say, i have been very fortunate to get some opportunities to work in different aspects of the media in recent years, and i hope to able to continue with that. i like to think i can offer some honest and balanced insights on the game,. i try to be as positive as i can about our games, as sadly too much negativity is purveyed nowadays, with much of it misplaced and driven by narrow agendas. Q - Finally, any regrets? A - None. dick Clerkin in action against Kieran donaghy in the Allianz league game in Clones last year (Photo: Fintan Mctiernan)

20 ALLIANZ FOOTBALL LEAGUE - ROINN 1 - BÁBHTA 3 A Weekend Away with the KERRY SUPPORTERS CLUB CIARRAÍ V MUINEACHÁN Kerry GAA supporters Club President Jerry brosnan pictured at the recent Annual social with from left, Martin leane, John Mangan, John King, Geraldine behan, John O'Connell, donal O'leary, Kay O'Connor and Tommy dowling. the Kerry supporters club was founded in 1989 and the first away trip was in November 1990 to Donegal. three weeks ago, almost 30 years on, Kerry supporters came together from various parts of the county for the first away trip of 2017 another trip to Donegal for the opening Allianz league game. Kennedy Coaches rolled into Farranfore for the first pick up on Saturday at 9 a.m. and then it was onto tralee to join with the second coach where they parted ways with one heading in the Abbeyfeale direction and the other taking in the coast road to limerick. the north Kerry coach stopped at the usual Mail Road Cross collection point where there was one notable absentee; our wonderful President Jerry Brosnan a man respected by all. Jerry rarely misses Kerry games and it was like a team lining out without one of their best players. He was in our thoughts however as we headed onwards to Donegal. Hopefully he will be able to join us in our travels again in the near future. Kerry supporters always look forward to these overnight trips and the fact that this game against 15 Month old Fionnán Moore pictured with his mother Maura (nee King, ballyroe, Tralee) who travelled from downpatrick Co. down was the youngest Kerry supporter at the recent Kerry v donegal game. He is seen here meeting up with Centenary captain Ambrose O'donovan in the dorrian imperial Hotel in ballyshannon on the eve of the game. Donegal was the first league game of 2017 generated a lot of interest. As we browsed our Saturday morning papers discussion was focused on how the new guys on the block would do in Following various collection points along the route we soon reached Galway for breakfast in Mother Hubbard s, and indeed one or two checked out the local across the road to quench the thirst!. Back on the road again as we headed on through tuam and into Mayo before the majestic Benbulbin of Sligo appeared in our sights. the banter and the stories shortened the journey to Bundoran where some of our group dropped off in the Great Northern Hotel with its fantastic beach and golf course providing a splendid back-drop. they later joined the rest of the party who travelled to Ballyshannon which was our base for the weekend. Our accommodation in the south Donegal town was in the Dorrians imperial Hotel which is owned by Ben and Mary Dorrian, (formerly Mary Stack from listowel town) who gave us a real Donegal welcome. Following a meal Chairman of the club 20

21 Donie O leary addressed the 15 strong group and thanked everyone for making the long trip. Among the group were Radio Kerry s Gary O Sullivan and centenary Captain Ambrose O Donovan, both of whom were granted celebrity status and they obliged with photos and selfies and later entertained the group with a few songs just to keep the vocal chords exercised for the following day s commentary!. Some supporters stayed on for the organised entertainment of music and dance while others explored the watering holes of Ballyshannon before venturing back to Dorrians for the usual singsong and storytelling. the likes of Denis Boyle, Christina Casey and John O Connell, to name but a few, kept the session going into the early hours! Sunday morning was soon upon us and following breakfast getting mass and browsing the morning papers were on the agenda. Before long it was time to depart for letterkenny in north Donegal for the big match. As we arrived in O Donnell Park it was quite obvious that a huge Kerry support was in Donegal for the weekend having travelled from the Kingdom and other counties around the country. the St eunans Clubhouse provided an ideal meeting place. the game was just eight minutes old when Shane enright picked up Mary Claire McCarthy pictured with an injury raising concern among the Kerry support which included Shane s parents, tom and Stella, who travel regularly with the group. We were all relieved when tom soon confirmed that the injury was not serious. Kerry s display on the day had everybody in good spirits as we embarked on our long journey south. the new guys had played their part and the match was the only topic of conservation discussed as we left Donegal. Just as darkness descended we reached the Dalton inn in Claremorris for our evening meal. All our needs catered for, it was time to leave the Mayo town and head for the Kingdom. With our taste buds satisfied it was time to start the usual sing-song with the likes of Jerry Kerry supporters Club members Marian McAuliffe (lixnaw), bridie Howard, Frances reidy (ballymac), bridie Carmody (Tralee) and Mike Hussey (ballyduff) pictured in The Thatch bar ballyshannon on the eve of the recent Kerry V donegal league game. Brosnan and John Mangan usually leading the way on the North Kerry bus while Mike Allen is never slow to start up the session on the South Kerry bus. Once we crossed the Shannon in limerick we were homeward bound, happy and exhausted. the road home after a victory is always special and even more so after a victory up north! it was heading on for midnight as Kennedys Coaches dropped off their weary loads after another very enjoyable and successful weekend away. the supporters are already looking forward to the next overnight trip to Cavan in a months time for the Round 6 game. 26 ALLIANZ FOOTBALL LEAGUE - ROINN 1 - BÁBHTA 3 Kerry Handball REVIEW By danny riordan 2016 was a great year for Kerry Handball getting off to a flying start in February with Glenbeigh s Dominic lynch capturing the Allireland 40X20 Over-35 Singles and followed that up with the Over-35 Doubles partnered by John Joe Quirke (Glenbeigh). He paired up with Jack O'Shea (Glenbeigh) to take the Munster Senior Doubles championship and also captured the Munster 60x30 Senior and Over- 35s Singles titles. the pairing of lynch and Quirke finished the year by capturing the O35 Munster and All-ireland 60x30 Doubles titles. in the ladies game, Ballymacelligott s Ashley Prendiville reached the semi-final of the 2016 All-ireland Senior 60x30 Championship, falling to eventual winner and she also contested the 60x30 Nationals final, losing out to Catriona Casey (Cork) in a tight match. in Kerry juvenile Handball, it was Ballymacelligott s Daire Keane who brought home the silverware in the Munster championships winning the U16 60X30 singles, following that up with another strong win over Kilkenny in the All-ireland semi-final only to fall in the final to tyrone.
