Today marks the second year in a row where Kerry face the tremendous prospect of qualifying for the knock out stages of the allianz Hurling league. last year Kerry lost out narrowly on scoring difference. Both Counties have new managers in place since late 2016 and they have really impressed in this short timescale. Today is a great opportunity for Kerry at home here in austin stack Park Tralee but it will be a tough contest with Offaly s recent form suggesting that they will be very hard to beat today. a loss this afternoon for Kerry would mean a trip to Portlaoise next weekend so today is a hugely significant day for Kerry hurling. The year to date has passed by very quickly and suddenly, the leinster Championship round robin series is now only a month away. 6 ALLIANZ HURLING LEAGUE - ROINN 1B - BÁBHTA 5 A VITAL GAME FOR BOTH SIDES By sylvester Hennessy KERRY V OFFALY AHL ROUND 5 PREVIEW For the second year in a row Kerry are faced with the exciting prospect of qualifying for the knock out stages of the allianz Hurling league. in 2016 despite beating both laois and Offaly in the group stages of division 1B Kerry lost out to Offaly and wexford on scoring differential. wexford have made great strides in the space of 12 months under the new management of davy Fitzgerald and Kerry and Offaly have also changed managers. Fintan O Connor has come in and really impressed in his short term in charge of Kerry while Kevin ryan is starting to make waves in the Faithful county. a win or a draw against Offaly today would see Kerry qualifying for an historic place in the allianz league hurling quarterfinals. These are exciting times for Kerry hurling and an opening round victory over laois in Tralee meant that this final game against Offaly was always going to be decisive. The fact that Kerry have been without so many key players of late such as michael O leary, mikey Boyle, Paud Costello, John Griffin and Tomás Casey through injury has however given the new management the chance to look at some of the younger players. The likes of John Buckley, Jordan Conway, James O Connor, Paudie O Connor and martin stackpoole have all come in and impressed. Offaly s recent form against both wexford and limerick suggests that they will be very tough to beat today. Kerry certainly won t lack spirit and they look to be superbly organised under the new management. it s a must win game for Offaly however and they look better placed right now to win this match. shane dooley is of course their star name but others like sean Cleary, Oisín Kelly, and Cillian Kiely have all chipped in with scores. a relegation play off with laois awaits the losers of this game. if Kerry lose today then they face a trip to Portlaoise next weekend. They will be hoping to avoid a repeat of last year s play off where they did beat laois in a cracking game in Tralee. The leinster Championship round robin series is only four short weeks away so these extra competitive games will be of great benefit to the Kerry players. This should be an exciting contest and we expect both teams to give their all today but Offaly s form and experience will very hard to beat. 7 ALLIANZ HURLING LEAGUE - ROINN 1B - BÁBHTA 5 Kerry V Offaly Their Last League Meeting Brave Kerry stun Offaly but miss out on quarter-final place CIARRAÍ 2-18 OFFALY 2-17 Kerry secured one of the most famous wins in their hurling history when they travelled to st Brendan s Park Birr and recorded a sensational 2-18 to 2-17 win over Offaly in round 5 last year - a victory that was fully merited after the Kingdom came back from six points down early in the second half. Once Colm Harty hit the net midway through the second half with an excellent run and low shot Kerry were back on terms and while neither side was able to pull decisively clear late on, scores from egan and shane nolan were crucial to Kerry taking both points even if their win was ultimately in vein, thanks to wexford s late winner against laois at O moore Park on the same day. Joe Bergin s goal gave his side a four point lead early on but some fine John egan frees meant that Kerry trailed by just four points, 1-11 to 0-10, at the break. dooley and Bergin pointed on the resumption but then John egan blasted the sliothar into the roof of the net after two minutes to cut the gap to a point. James mulrooney and Colum Harty swapped goals but Kerry were growing in confidence. Jordan Conway gave Kerry their first lead of the game and while Offaly responded immediately, Kerry struck twice to build up a two point lead with just four minutes of added time remaining and while shane dooley cut the gap again with a 65, that was to prove insufficient in the bid to deny the most remarkable result of the allianz league campaign.
