3 Fáiltiú an Chathaoirligh Is cúis áthais dom fíor fáilte a fhearadh romhaimh chuigh Cluichí Leath Cheannais Peile An Chontae um thráthnona. Is tráthnóna speisialta í dos na h-imreoirí, na h-oifigigh, lucht leanúna agus na réiteoirí. Tá súil agam go mbeidh sár chluichí spoirtiúla againn. I welcome the teams from Dingle and Austin Stacks and the teams from Shannon Rangers and Mid Kerry, their mentors and supporters, to this afternoon s semi-finals of the Garveys Super Valu County Senior Football Championship. Welcome also to the referees, their umpires and linesmen. A place in the County Final is at stake for the four teams playing here today and all the players are eager to make the best contribution possible to their team s objective to earn the honour of playing in the County Final. In welcoming the referees and their officials I hope that they too have an enjoyable day and wish them the very best in the important role that they have in our games. Today we have two club teams and two group teams. The structure of the Kerry County Senior Football Championship provides every player in the county, regardless of the size of his club, the opportunity of playing in the County Senior Championship either in a senior club team or in a group team. This blend of senior club teams and group teams in the championship gives all players the opportunity of playing at the highest level of championship football in Kerry. Hopefully the two games today will be entertaining, hard fought and closely contested and played in the true spirit of sportsmanship. Each of the teams has the talent, skills and commitment to win. In today s double bill we have the clash of club teams in one semi-final Austin Stacks and Dingle and in the second semi-final the two groups teams face each other. The two club teams have recent experience of this stage of the competition. We can expect a tough contest and even though the Stacks are top of the County League table, championship is down to a performance on the day. The two teams have a consistent record and if they play to form a great game is expected. The second semi-final has two group teams, Mid Kerry up against Shannon Rangers and we can expect this to be another interesting game. It s great to see the return of Shannon Rangers to this stage of the championship but they will have a tough battle against a very experienced Mid Kerry team. Nevertheless we can expect the North Kerry team to seriously put down a strong challenge for a place in the County Final. A great afternoon of football is in store and we expect to see the Kerry style of fast, free flowing, open football on display. Best of luck to all four teams and even with the stakes so high for a place in the County Final for the two winning teams, let s hope that their supporters and the neutrals will have an enjoyable day s entertainment watching Kerry Football at its best. SPONSORS I take this opportunity to thank our sponsors, Garveys Super Valu for their continued sponsorship, we are very grateful for their genuine interest and generous support of our club players. Enjoy the games. Slán abhaile, Padraig Ó Súilleabháín, Cathaoirleach, Coiste Chontae Chiarraí. 3

6 Match preview More developed StackS to edge out dingle's youth The first of today s county SFC semi-finals brings together two clubs that will feel - with plenty of justification - that it s been far too long since the Bishop Moynihan Cup has wintered with them. For Austin Stacks it s 20 years since they last called themselves county champions, and though there have been years since when they came very close to adding to their 11 titles, 2014 looks as though it could be their best chance yet to increase their lead at the top of the county championship roll of honour. Dingle have to go some way further back - to for their last championship winning year, and 66 years feels far too long a wait for the Moynihan Cup to go back to the West Kerry town in its own right. Still, in football there are no free lunches or easy championships, and Stacks and Dingle must earn the title if, indeed, it is to go to one or other this year. Two strong divisional teams will have a major say in that, of course, but today these two clubs must navigate this semifinal first and foremost. A quick appraisal of the sides suggests very little between them. In their two meetings thus far this year the honours are even: Dingle won their senior club championship meeting back in May, 4-7 to A month later Stacks repaid the debt in their 0-15 to 0-7 win in the county league. Stacks have since qualified for the county league final; Dingle have struggled a little more in the top division. But at this stage of the season the Championship is all that matters. Stacks welcome back Kerry hero Kieran Donaghy, a man reborn this summer after his 6 Shane O Callaghan (Austin Stacks) paul brennan sports editor - the kerryman giant-killing exploits with the county team. Dingle, too, have their All-Ireland heroes - cousins Paul and Mikey Geaney. The former scored that first minute goal in the All-Ireland final, but Mikey - arguably - has benefitted more from his season in the green and gold. Dingle also have a core of All-Ireland winners with the county minors and Pobascoil Chorca Dhuibhne: valuable experience that should count on the domestic beat. Stacks don t lack for experience either. Many of their starters have worn the green and gold too, and in Daniel Bohan and William Kirby they have men who know what to do down the closing stretch of tight games. Both managers - unsurprisingly - have played down their respective quarter-final wins. Dingle manager John Flannery described their one-point win over Legion as disappointing, citing the numerous wasted chances in a game

7 they should have won much more comfortably. And he is correct. Looking at the positives, though, Flannery is hoping that the tight nature of the game will stand to his team today. Stephen Stack had less to be concerned about in Stacks 0-14 to 0-7 win over West Kerry last weekend. A solid defence and crisp passing under the most horrible weather conditions can only have pleased their manager, but he did raise concerns over some of the team s decision making. Stack is also right. Their defence was impressive last weekend but the Dingle attack - with Paul Geaney at its heart - will ask far harder questions of them. Their midfield, too, was strong, with Wayne Guthrie and Donaghy combining well in the middle of the park to keep the ball moving swiftly and smartly from defence to attack. If there are worries over Stacks capacity to go all the way this year it may be that their attack lacks real menace. Shane O Callaghan is an excellent player, Mikey Collins and Shane Carroll can pick off scores and, of course, Donaghy can be deployed to wreak havoc at full forward, but collectively we have yet to see Stacks cut a defence up. And their goal tally this season has been alarmingly low. In Paul Geaney, Dingle have that marquee forward and in Mikey Geaney they have a workhorse with plenty of skill to complement the substance. Like Stacks they also need to get more from their attack, and converting those chances against a tenacious Stacks defence will 7 Mikey Geaney (Dingle) be crucial for success. There s no fear of Dingle s young players being overawed by the occasion - they have played in Croke Park three times this year - but they will be will be coming up against a stronger, more mature player here and that might go against them. Each team is a recent beaten county finalist, and there isn t a whole lot to separate them this year. Stacks, in their second season under Stephen Stack, might be a little further on in their development and they get a tentative vote of confidence to win by two or three scores. 12 Match preview Mid kerry May just Shade Mouth-watering clash Probably what were the two form sides from last weekend face off in this second Garveys SuperValu Senior Football Championship semi final when 2008 champions Mid Kerry meet Shannon Rangers, who haven t celebrated a Bishop Moynihan win since way back in In fact since Laune Rangers defeated Killarney Crokes, back in 1887, North Kerry football has a poor record in the senior football championship, with only nine wins, Shannon Rangers (5), Feale Rangers (3) and Castleisland (1) and maybe they can also claim some portion of St Kieran s 1988 win as well. A closer look reveals that the golden era was a decade between 1972 and 1981, during which Shannon Rangers won in 72 and 77 and Feale Rangers in 78 and 80, and of course it was the era of the Bomber Liston, Ogie Moran, Jimmy Deenihan and the late Tim Kennelly. Mid Kerry, are not exactly prolific in terms of success in the premier championship either, having only four wins, 67, 71, 92 and 2008, but Laune Rangers have ensured that Mid Kerry football has a strong record in SFC, so this current Mid Kerry squad will be chomping at the bit, to deliver this year. North Kerry football and the North Kerry Football Championship has always been strong and the NK Championship is talked about nationally and has a huge following, maybe because of its timing ever since Luke Keane famously labelled it as the Jingle Bells Championship. Shannon Rangers boss Liam Weir, is quick to spring to the defence of North Kerry sides; It s great to be in the semi final. We have 12 Ger Hartnett (Mid Kerry) mortimer murphy Gaa Correspondent supported Feale Rangers on many s a day. Feale Rangers went to the semi final last year, and despite things not going well for them, I think it proves that football in North Kerry is very much underestimated. Feale Rangers have been very competitive over the past number of years, and now we are trying to push it on a bit this year. Anyone you talk to around Ireland appear to know of the North Kerry Championship, and it s time that we took the intensity of that competition to earlier in the year and to the county championship and that is what has happened this year so far. There is little doubt that Shannon Rangers have been the surprise team of the championship this year, and while their management are sensitive on the subject as it has not happened on their watch, Shannon Rangers have had some chequered years in the SFC when for whatever reason, neither the teams nor their efforts on the field, were up to scratch. However, under Liam Weir and trainer Padraig Dillon, all has changed and Shannon Rangers

13 are well prepared and fit to do battle with a Mid Kerry side who are many pundits favourites to go all the way. Indeed it looks like a SFC, that any of the four remaining teams could win. Mid Kerry boss James Sheehan is very wary of the threat posed by Shannon Rangers; I did see them, and I was very impressed by them. They are well organized and their work rate around the field is impressive. Rangers have beaten Kilcummin, St Michael s/foilmore and last weekend South Kerry and while they have really looked impressive, one has to ask the question how strong were their opponents? While question marks hang over their first two rivals, South Kerry could hardly be considered a soft touch. Mid Kerry appear to have an edge in experience, with players like Donnchadh Walsh, Darran O'Sullivan, Pa Kilkenny, Gavin O'Grady, Gary Sayers, Fergal Griffin, Aaron Cahalane, Ronan Murphy and Colin McGillycuddy, not to mention, Kerry Minor Liam Carey and veteran Sean O'Sullivan both of whom were sprung from the bench last weekend. Keel were Munster Junior champions last year, Glenbeigh/Glencar have gained promotion to Div. 1 of the Co League this season and are favourites to win the Junior Championship, so no lack of talent or form there. But Shannon Rangers were boosted by Ballyduff's exit from the Hurling Championship, with Mikey Boyle proving a handful up front, and can be deadly on his day. Paud Costello and Barry O Grady 13 Danny Wrenn (Shannon Rangers) are also superb footballers. Paul Kennelly has been scoring at will, but he will be closely marked this time (might be Pa Kilkenny), while Ger Gorman also knows where the posts are. Rangers defence is solid, backboned by Kerry senior Shane Enright, David Culhane and Kerry Junior Danny Wrenn, so Mid Kerry will have to work for every score. verdict: In truth the heart says Mid Kerry, but Shannon Rangers also look a driven side and the result could go the other way - it will depend on which forward line clicks on the day TOP 6 CHAMPIONSHIP TOP SCORERS Conor Keane (Legion) 2-21 Gavan O Grady (Mid Kerry) 3-15 Paul Kennelly (Shannon Rangers) 2-17 Jamie O Sullivan (Kilcummin) 2-15 Shane Carroll (Austin Stacks) 0-20 Mike O Donoghue (East Kerry) 1-17 PATHS TO THE SEMIFINALS MID KERRY: Round 1: Mid Kerry 2-14 St Kieran s 2-10; Round 3: Mid Kerry 2-12 Feale Rangers 2-5; Quarterfinal: Mid Kerry 2-14 Laune Rangers 1-9. 19 COISTE SCÓR CHIARRAÍ Today it s all about the Garveys Supervalu County Senior Football Championship semi finals, however, as we approach the beginning of the 2014/15 Scór season which will be getting underway in early November at Scór na nóg level, let's reflect back on the season gone by, which brought so much success to both the County and the respective victorious Clubs at All Ireland level. Spa, Killarney set the ball rolling at the All Ireland Scór Na nóg finals at the Travellers Friend, Castlebar, County Mayo where the Killarney club represented the County in three out of the eight events and were successful in Recitation (Allison Fitzmartin) and Set Dancing. Unfortunately the Quiz team of Thomas Fleming, Michael Aherne, James Lynch and Niámh Clifford just fell short on the day. Next up was the All Ireland Finals of Scór Sinsear and again the popular Mayo venue hosted the finals and yet again the Kingdom was represented, this time in four out of the eight categories. Then when the adjudicators made their final deliberations it proved to be a joyous occasion for the County with the Churchill Quiz team representing the Tralee/St. Brendans/Castleisland Board (Mike Gaynor, Paul Culloty, Alex O Donnell and John Flaherty) getting the day off to the best possible start. Next up on stage were the Glenflesk Figure dancers who brought home All Ireland title number 2. Taking part in the last category of the day were Kilcummin who made it a day to remember. For the second time Ray O Sullivan of Spa was edged out of the winners enclosure in the Recitation discipline. SPOnSORS Once again we are indebted to our sponsors in the County, Lee Strand who kindly sponsors Scór na bpaistí while Billy and Mary Enright of Estuary Print and Trophies, Ballylongford, sponsors Scór Sinsear. Hopefully this year somebody will come in and sponsor Scór na nóg. Finally on behalf of Coiste Scór Chiarraí we would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody for their continued support and wish all teams the best of luck to day.
