After the exciting conclusion to the drawn game, everybody is hoping today that this Garvey s Super Valu County Senior Football Championship Final Replay will be just as thrilling and exciting a game. For a time in the drawn game it looked as if Austin Stacks would win. However, Donnchadh Walsh s goal for Mid Kerry early in the second half ensured that the result of this game could go down to the very last passage of play. As the final reached its closing moments it would have been unfortunate if either team had lost. The players, most likely, will have spent most of this week recovering and getting refocused. Replays take on a life of their own and what happened last Sunday most likely will have little bearing on what might unfold in today s encounter. The County Championship means a lot to everybody in the county the senior clubs and the group teams, the players, coaches, officers, club members and the local communities. Everybody rallies behind their team. Although last Sunday s draw was an anticlimax as far a result is concerned, the game entertained the crowd to the very end as the players displayed their skill and 3 determination to bring the cup back to their communities. That is what the Garvey s Super Valu Kerry County Senior Football Championship is all about. 5 A message from Tomás Garvey of Garvey s SuperValu Local makes the Difference Fáilte go gach éinne go dtí ath-imirt Craobh Sinsir Chiarraí 2014 Welcome back to all of the supporters, players and mentors of both Austin Stacks and Mid Kerry for the final replay of the 2014 Kerry County Senior Football Championship. Last Sunday was probably the most entertaining final we have had in some time, it was thrilling and exciting with both sides getting chances at the death to win it. Hopefully today s game will be just as close. The atmosphere in Austin Stack Park was fantastic as both sets of supporters got behind their teams and there was unbelievable colour form the supporters from the Rock. Today s game will hopefully live up to last Sunday s match but I wouldn t rule out extra time. From a Garvey s point of view it was great to be able to assist in pre-selling of tickets for both today s and last Sunday s county finals and hopefully it made it easier and more convenient for patrons to be able to call into one of our stores to buy tickets. Here s to an enjoyable final today and if we can get a game as close and exciting as last Sunday then it should be something to look forward to. Bain Taithneamh as an Lá inniu. Best of luck to both teams today and their supporters. 10 WHAT THEY SAID Right now, as far as I m concerned, it s just half time in this year s final. Yes, it s now a one hundred and twenty minute final but it s all square at half time and still all to play for I said beforehand that this really was a fifty-fifty final and so it proved. I still think it s a coin toss for the replay Austin Stacks Manager, Stephen Stack We led at one stage in the second half and what annoys me is when you see the two frees there. They should have been banged over the bar. That lacks a bit of conviction, but I ve addressed that inside in the dressing room. We ll have to continue on with what they re good at and they re good at a lot of things and just correct the little small details Mid Kerry Manager, James Sheehan The draw a fair result? Probably, and yet there isn t anything equal about it any more. Stacks, like Tipp in the All Ireland hurling final, showed their strongest hand and have given the opposing manager plenty of food for thought. Mid Kerry have a lifeline, a week to prepare, wrongs to right and a Stacks game plan to dissect. Not a bad place to be at all. Damian Stack, The Kerryman ABOUT THE DRAWN GAME QUOTES FOR the first time in a long time we got a county senior football final that kept everyone in their seats until the very last ball was kicked. What we didn t get was a winner. No harm. Austin Stacks and Mid Kerry gave us a final last Sunday that enthralled, excited and engaged us all - partisans and neutrals - and should ensure that as many again, if not more, will head for Killarney on Sunday hoping for an equally tight and tense contest. Paul Brennan, The Kerryman It can hardly be co-incidental either that Stacks began to play their best football once Donaghy moved to full-forward in a swap with William Kirby. All of a sudden Stacks had a focal point and Mid Kerry had something to worry about. Donaghy s expected battle with Fergal Griffin could begin in earnest. Between the ninth and the 22nd minutes Stacks scored 1-6. In that time they didn t kick a single wide. They scored a hugely impressive 1-8 from just nine opportunities. That s a simply sensational rate of scoring return from a forward unit. Damian Stack, The Kerryman Midfield action from the drawn game 10

11 Shane Carroll (Austin Stacks) in control of this situation in the drawn game. Pre-match there was little to separate the teams and after 60-plus minutes of guts and glory football both sides were still left standing. Standing and scratching their respective heads, perhaps, as to how this one got away. Both teams will feel they should have made off with the Bishop s Cup last Sunday, but the corollary of that is that both teams might count themselves fortunate to be getting another crack at it. Paul Brennan, The Kerryman By now Donaghy was well established at full forward after a few early minutes at midfield and when he rose above Fergal Griffin to claim Carroll s high delivery there was only going to be one outcome. It took two stabs at it but the goal duly rippled. Stacks ahead by five and the Rockies rocking on the terrace. Paul Brennan, The Kerryman As always Donnchadh Walsh was to the fore in everything Mid Kerry initiated and, with Darran O Sullivan in that second half as they clawed back the 1-9 to 1-5 lead, their experience stood out. Daniel Bohan, on the other side, played a massive part for Stacks, experience here again in the terrible conditions was vital and one of his points in the first half would have done justice to Maurice Fitzgerald. Weeshie Fogarty, The Kerryman The ball ballooned high, the wind caught and carried it. Hope not yet lost, Kieran Donaghy rose, determined not to let this chance slip. Not this ball, not this game, not this championship, not this chance to captain the Kingdom. From where we were sitting it looked as if he got fingertips to Shane Carroll s last gasp effort just before it went agonisingly wide. Every last sinew Donaghy stretched. The man they call Star left it all on the line. With sixty-three minutes on the clock referee Eddie Walsh was ready to blow it up as soon as the ball went dead. The shrill blast brought to a conclusion a pulsating contest. There was no euphoria. No pitch invasion. No trip up the steps of the stand to collect the cup. It was, in every sense of the word, an anti-climax and none more so than for Stacks and Donaghy. Damian Stack, The Kerryman 11 Both teams gathered in a huddle in the minutes after Walsh brought matters to a close. Both managers and both sets of players keen to get the mood and the tone right for the replay and to do so as soon as possible. Stacks stood there, shoulder to shoulder, arms linked, listening to Stephen Stack as he, no doubt, accentuated the positives. It s all to play for. There s another sixty minutes in which to finish the job. The Rockies were still in their huddle as Mid Kerry made their way down the tunnel and into the sanctuary of the dressing room. Maybe we re reading too much into that, but it seemed to us an indication that James Sheehan had less need to ram home what needed to be rammed home. Damian Stack, The Kerryman This was one of the best county finals we have seen in recent years, no quarter asked or given, the lead changing hands numerous times, twelve men raised the scoring flags. And this proved the fact, if proof positive was needed, that we were witnessing all that is pure and honest and great in Kerry championship football. It was in many ways redemption for county championship football as we had seen some pretty poor fare in recent years. Weeshie Fogarty, The Kerryman County colleagues Donnchadh Walsh (Mid Kerry) and Kieran Donaghy (Austin Stacks) in action in the drawn game

13 FINAL PREVIEW STACKS & MID KERRY RENEW RIVALRY REPLAYS in County Finals have become more common place in recent years and this is the 5th Kerry Senior County Football Final replay of the past 20 years. Austin Stacks defeated Dr Crokes back in 1994, East Kerry were victors over Laune Rangers after a replay in 1997, An Ghaeltacht needed a second game to defeat Laune Rangers in 2003 while Mid Kerry did likewise against Kerins O Rahilly s in Both Mid Kerry and Austin Stacks know what it s like to win a replay but this is I suppose even more relevant to the Mid Kerry panel that have a number of players who were involved in that now infamous win over Jack O Connor s Strand Road side in The replay that day proved to be a low scoring game and that could very well be the case again in Both sets of managements will spend the week pondering what moves to make to increase their chances of victory. The game of football has in some ways become more like a game of chess and while the drawn game was a thrilling open game of football the replay should be a more tactically dominated encounter. It is highly likely that Stephen Stack will endeavour to negate the influence of Gavan O Grady while James Sheehan will try to do likewise with Kieran Donaghy. The 2014 All Star was outstanding in the drawn game handling more ball than any other player on the field. The only problem from a Stacks perspective was that most of his good work took place far too far from the danger zone. The question remains can Austin Stacks, firstly, win enough possession in the middle third and secondly supply quality ball into Donaghy on the edge of the square. Mid Kerry appear to have the edge in attacking options and they are sure to start Liam Carey today. The Kerry Minor had a huge influence in the drawn game. Darran O Sullivan, Gary Sayers, Donnchadh Walsh and O Grady are also there and their inter county like forward unit will take some stopping again on Sunday. Mid Kerry have scored 9 goals so far in the championship while Austin Stacks have only scored 3 and that appears to be the key difference between these sides. Mid Kerry s ability in the forward line could see them through on this occasion. To be fair to Stephen Stack and his backroom team, he has done superbly to guide a young Austin Stacks side to back to back county finals. If we removed the weight of history then the pressure would lessen on what after all is just a fledgling group of footballers. Greg Horan and Conor Jordan are still teenagers, Fearghal MacNamara, Shane Carroll and Shane O Callaghan are just 21 while Darragh O Brien and Ciarán O Connell are only 20. When you add young players like Eamonn McAllen, Jack Morgan and Michael O Donnell to the mix the future for the famed club looks very promising indeed. A County Championship win is all that will satisfy the success starved Austin Stacks supporters on this occasion. And while I am on the subject of supporters, the colour and atmosphere generated by the Rockies, is a joy to behold. The footage of the Austin Stacks supporters marching to Austin Stack Park on Sunday last was quite memorable and great credit is due to their loyal bank of support. Their lack of inhibition needs to be applauded and the GAA certainly needs more of that kind of colourful support. The Stacks support could go home disappointed again this evening however. This is not to say that Mid Kerry do not have weaknesses. James Sheehan will more than likely add Jeremiah Hoare to this starting defence. The Mid Kerry defensive unit rode their luck on occasions in the drawn game and they will need to up their games significantly today. The same could be said of the Mid Kerry midfield who lost the kick out battle in the drawn game. For all that however it is Mid Kerry s ability in attack that has drove them on all season. The Divisional outfit look like they have a little bit more room for improvement and on that basis they are still the favourites going into this replay and it will take an incredible effort on Stacks part to win this final. The longer a Divisional outfit goes on in a championship the better they get and the precedent is there that Divisional sides generally win replays. 13 sylvester hennessy Kerry s eye GAA Correspondent

21 mid Kerry Win replayed Final Mid Kerry and Kerins-O Rahilly s had to meet twice in 2008 to decide the destination of the AIB County Senior Football Championship and the right to take home the Bishop Moynihan Cup. The drawn game was played on Sunday, 16th November at Fitzgerald Stadium. While Mid Kerry were dominant for most parts and O Rahilly s were 7 points down early in the second half (2 6 to 0 5), the Tralee men turned in an extraordinary comeback and showed great grit and determination to draw level and earn a replay in near darkness. Goals from Tommy and Barry John Walsh got them back in the game and set up a pulsating and exciting finish. The replay went ahead on Sunday, 30th November at the earlier time of 2.00pm before 8,000 supporters at the same venue and it resulted in a dramatic 1 7 to 0 9 win for Mid Kerry. Amid intense drama and with Strand Road up 2 points, referee Pádraig O Sullivan awarded Mid Kerry a penalty 73 seconds into injury-time. Aidan O'Shea coolly slotted it to the net in the 63rd minute to snatch a one-point victory. Kerins O Rahilly s were managed by the then recently re-appointed Kerry manager Jack O'Connor while James Sheehan was the Mid Kerry bainisteoir. Donnchadh Walsh was named the 2008 Co. 22 AUSTIN STACKS - Garveys Supervalu County Senior Football Finalists 2014

23 20 bliain ó shin - austin stacks win 1994 Final replay It took 2 games to separate Austin Stack s and Dr. Crokes in the 1994 Co. Senior Football Championship Final. The drawn game was played at Austin Stack Park, Tralee on Sunday, 9th October. The Kerryman reported that it was a thrill packed hour of football and it certainly kept the crowd in suspense up to the final moments. The scores were tied at 12 points apiece when in the 59th minute Owen Moynihan shot a point for what looked a likely winner for Stacks. However up stepped Croke s substitute Bill Hennigan to put over a 60th minute equaliser and send the tie to a replay at 0 13 each. Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney was the venue for the replay on 23rd November. Bhí Denis Reidy (Ballymacelligott) mar réiteoir sna dá cliuchí. Over 9,000 attended and although the game was not as intense as the previous encounter, Stack s were not complaining as they marched to a 4 point victory, 0 12 to 1 5. Stacks were always marginally on top. They lead by 0 6 to 0 3 as half time approached. However a 28th minute goal from Ger O Shea left the sides level at the break. In the second half Crokes could only score 2 points, in the 43rd and 60th minutes, while the Tralee side added 6 points through the half. Darren Aherne scored a total of 7 points for Stack s but it was the performance of Pa Laide at centre back that caught the eye. The Kerryman newspaper reported that Laide has scarcely if ever played better in a Stack s jersey as he did on Sunday and his majestic performance rubbed off on other members of the side as the game wore on. d imir an foireann seo dos na stacaigh an lá san: Mike Hussey, Liam Liddy, Jerry Fitzmaurice, Pat Slattery (capt.), Malachy Nagle, Pa Laide, John Galvin, Cormac Kennedy, Darren Ahern, Gerry Lynch, Owen Moynihan, Martin McKivergan, Donal McEvoy. 28 Kerry Reaping the Rewards of the Development Squad Structure Kerry South U16 action v Waterford in Munster Tournament in Rathkeale Under the direction of the Coaching and Games management, preparations with the 2014 Kerry Football Development Squads began in October The squads underwent a winter conditioning program across various venues around the county. Following on from this program, the squads continued their development under their various management and coaching teams who s commitment and dedication to their roles in guiding the squads forward on their inter-county paths cannot be underestimated in safeguarding the continued success of Kerry football. Indeed, the success of this year s Kerry minor team has its foundation in the Development Squad structures put in place over the previous number of years. The majority of this year s All- Ireland winning minor team joined the Development Squads at Under 14 level in 2010 and that year actually saw Kerry North overcome Kerry South in the final of the Jim Power U14 Tournament when they met in the final. Their progression and development has been carefully tracked and nurtured as they progressed through the Development Squads at U15, U16 and U17 level and finally after a 20 year gap they claimed the All-Ireland minor title. Much praise goes to the Development Squad coaches at all levels who helped in making this year s minor success possible. This year the Kerry Football Development squads also brought home three pieces of silverware. In Millstreet, the Kerry South U15 squad retained the Humprey Kelleher Cup while in Rathkeale the Kerry South U16 squad captured the Shield title and in Dungarvan Kerry South were victorious in the Plate final. The Kerry North and Kerry South U14 squads made the long trip to Dungarvan and both advanced through the group stages of the Jim Power Memorial Tournament to take their place in finals. The Kerry North team lost out in the Cup final, coming up against a very strong Cork East team while in the Plate final Kerry South had a comfortable victory over Limerick on a scoreline of 3-06 to In the Humphrey Kelleher Memorial KERRY SOUTH UNDER 14 FOOTBALL DEVELOPMENT SQUAD 28

29 KERRY NORTH U16 SQUAD WHO PARTICIPATED IN MUNSTER U16 TOURNAMENT HELD IN RATHKEALE & ADARE tournament both Kerry North and Kerry South had good wins over Tipperary and Clare respectively at the quarter final stage to set up meetings with the two Cork teams participating in the tournament. Kerry North just came up short in their semi-final clash with Cork West as they went down on a scoreline of 3-04 to 1-12 while Kerry South had four points to spare in their semi-final victory over Cork East on a scoreline of 3-14 to Onto the Cup final versus Cork West for Kerry South and here they really turned on the style and class and came away with a highly impressive victory scoring six goals in the process, limiting Cork West to just one goal in the first half before finally finishing the game on a scoreline of Kerry South 6-18 v Cork West In the Munster U16 Tournament held in Limerick, both Kerry North and Kerry South came up short in their opening games. Despite dominating possession, Kerry North could not find the target on the day and lost out to the eventual Cup final winners Tipperary. Kerry South meanwhile rallied well in the second half of their opening game against Corcaigh but Corcaigh s goal scoring power ensured they advanced in the Cup competition as the game finished Kerry South 0-15 v Corcaigh Kerry South then faced up against Kerry North in the Shield semi-final and they were too strong for Kerry North on the day and marched onto the Shield Final where they had a comfortable victory over Waterford finishing with a score of 2-11 to County Coaching Officer, Eamon Whelan, expressed his thanks to all the development squad management teams and the parents for their continued support for our up and coming county players.
