3 Fáiltiú an Chathaoirligh Fearaim fáilte romhaibh go Páirc Aibhistín de Staic inniu. Ba mhaith liom fáilte speisialta a chur roimh na fóirne agus tá súil agam go mbeidh cluiche iontach agus sportúil againn inniu. Two exciting semi finals are in store for us here in Austin Stack Park today as age old rivals go head to head to earn a place in the Garveys Supervalu Senior Hurling Championship Final. Kerry U-21 Hurlers Pride of place at intercounty level this year has to go the our All-Ireland U21 B hurling winners who secured victory over Wicklow in a highly entertaining and close contest at Semple Stadium Thurles on 9th September last. It represented a first All Ireland title since 2013 and the eighth overall with a well deserved four-point win. Ian Brick and his management team deserve huge credit and particular mention. Collectively they put in a huge effort in preparing the team and reaped the rewards accordingly. It is refreshing to see the number of talented young hurlers in Kerry and all going well a good number of them will progress into the Senior set up this year. It was very fitting indeed that Kerry Captain and Lixnaw native Darragh Shanahan was presented with the Ritchie McElligott Cup by Uachtatán Tofa CLG, John Horan. This cup is of course named after one of Lixnaw s famous sons. Special Congress A special Congress will take place at the end of the month primarily to deal with the new hurling proposals. A series of information nights have been held in the four provinces where the proposals have been explained to County Officers and delegates. Special Congress is not something that happens very often, in fact its ten years since one was held. The proposals have been drafted following consultation by many groups and bodies and will be debated on the day. The rationale behind the hurling reforms relates to a want on the part of CLG at national level to have them in line with the football changes that will come into effect next year. There will be a three-year period from 2018 where the reformed hurling and football championships will be monitored and evaluated. Currans Development Current Status 4 sand based pitches and drills area fully installed & completed Clubhouse consists of 8nr changing rooms, gym, dedicated medical / physio & rehab area, canteen, kitchen, offices & cafe all now complete Gym fit out to take place in November / December 2017 Pitch Lighting to be installed by December 2017 The completed facility will ultimately incorporate six pitches Facility will be fully available to all inter county teams in January 2018 Further International fundraising initiatives are planned for the coming year Maurice Leahy Earlier this month Maurice Leahy retired as hurling GDA in Kerry after almost 28 years service. Such has been his contribution to the Development of Hurling in the County that it cannot be measured accurately or its significance overstated. Maurice has always described the role as his dream job and since becoming Chairman last December I have found Maurice to be an absolute gentleman who is totally committed to the promotion of Hurling. I would like to take this opportunity to wish Maurice all the very best in his retirement and I have no doubt that he will play many future roles in developing the game in Kerry. 4 Garveys Supervalu Senior Hurling Championship Semi Final LIXNAW V ST. BRENDAN S PREVIEW By Sylvester Hennessy, Kerry s Eye Paul O'Carroll Ballyduff in action against Darragh Shanahan Lixnaw in the County Hurling Championship Round 2A game between the sides. Photo: Kerry s Eye Lixnaw and St Brendan s have a rich recent history in the Garvey s Super Valu Kerry Senior Hurling Championship. The two clubs avoided each other in 2016 but last met in the championship in the semi-final back in St Brendan s won that game by 6 points. In 2014 they met on three occasions. St Brendan s won the first game by a point and then met Lixnaw in the semi-final. Lixnaw won that game after a replay and went on to win the title that year. That was a sweet victory for Lixnaw because St Brendan s had beaten Lixnaw in the County Final in 2013 once again after a replay. In those previous 6 meetings, St Brendan s have won 3, there has been 2 draws and Lixnaw have won once. This will be the 7th meeting of the teams in the championship in 5 years and their third semi-final meeting in 4 years. It would be fair to say that a healthy rivalry has built up between both camps over the years although the playing personnel has changed somewhat for both. Lixnaw in particular have had a strong influx of youth to the side. The likes of Shane Conway, Colm Sheehy, Liam Mullins and Conor O Keeffe have injected a youthful look to the Lixnaw side. Although the experience of players like John Griffin, Michael Conway and Pat Corridan will also be crucial. St Brendan s are still relying on John Egan for inspiration although Cian Hussey, Thomas Moloney and Kevin Skinner have all added punch to their attack. If this game goes according to the pre-ordained script then Lixnaw should win. Mark Foley s side were in imperious form in the summer and it is reasonable to assume that they will maintain that progress on Sunday. Lixnaw had an average score of 2-23 in their opening games of the championship and St Brendan s will have to work hard to stop that scoring threat. The big question surrounding this game is can St Brendan s improve. They have been knocking on the door at this stage of the season for a couple of years but have yet to recreate the winning form that they showed in

5 There is no question that they have the talent and they also should have a physical advantage against a young Lixnaw side. If they manage to curb the threat of the Conway brothers at one end of the field and John Egan and Cian Hussey get going at the other end of the pitch then an Ardfert win is more than possible. Lixnaw have played a sleek brand of quick hurling relying on pace and skill. Their speed of movement and the economy in their striking has been a hall mark of their play this year. This will be a fascinating contrast in playing styles and a good test of Lixnaw s championship credentials. There is normally very little between these two when they meet and we expect something similar again on Sunday. Lixnaw are rightly favourites to win the game but we expect a big kick from St Brendan s. It is crucial that Ardfert men play to a game plan and stick to it. They must also play to their strengths. If they manage to do both then this should be a real battle. The Ardfert lads will no doubt be reminded that they have a good record against Lixnaw and they will believe they can win. Both teams have registered big scores in this year s championship but St Brendan s defensive frailties, they have conceded 8 goals in this year s championship, could be their Achilles heel. Lixnaw s worries are that they are a little bit rusty and also they will hope that their inexperienced players perform in a pressure situation. If Lixnaw break even in the middle third then they should be good enough to win the game. 14 Garveys Supervalu Senior Hurling Championship Semi Final BALLYDUFF V KILMOYLEY PREVIEW By Damian Stack IT DOESN T GET MUCH BIGGER THAN THIS. In fact the only thing bigger than Ballyduff and Kilmoyley meeting in a county semi-final is for them to meet in a final as they did just twelve months ago. That fact and the fact the final went to a replay adds a nice additional layer to this clash of the titans. Last year s victory for Kilmoyley tied the two giants of the game in the Kingdom at the top of the roll of honour. Neither team will want to give an inch in the battle for supremacy. Neither team will want the other to get anywhere near going back to the top of the pile on their own. If you don t think that matters then we d advise you think again. Of course it matters. You don t get to the top of the pile unless being top of the pile means something to you. Traditions of excellence have a way of perpetuating themselves. Just take a look at this Kilmoyley team. They knew they were good enough to win two in-a-row so they did it. They know they re good enough to at least challenge for three in-a-row so that s what they re doing. It s not coincidence that when these clubs have had teams good enough to win one championship they ve usually gone on to win multiple championships. They win the odd one in isolation here and there, but more often than not they aim for domination. The stakes, then, are pretty high here today in Austin Stack Park. Most people have Kilmoyley down as favourites, for the simple reason that at this moment in time they re proven winners. Photo: Kerry s Eye 14 Photo Left: Mikey Boyle of Ballyduff in action against Darragh Shanahan Lixnaw in Round 2A of the Senior Hurling Championship at Austin Stack Park.

15 When push has come to shove this past three seasons Fergie O Loughlin s men not forgetting John Meyler s role as manager in the first season of this period of success for the club have found a way to win. If that meant calling upon the talents of Shane Brick to help them to victory in last year s final then so be it. Great teams and great clubs do everything they can to win and, we re of the opinion at least, Ballyduff could well have beaten them last year without Brick s influence. With Brick now retired, does that swing the pendulum back towards Ballyduff? Possibly, but we wouldn t be 100% convinced of that. Not least because there s a chance and we re writing this before a decision has been formalised Mikey Boyle won t have his suspension lifted in time for today s game. Losing Mikey would be an equally significant blow to Ballyduff as the loss of Brick (and really we have to take his availability for last year s final as a bonus anyway). That being the case (and again we don t know at the time of writing) the two even each other out. Outside of that you d have to consider that Kilmoyley had the better of both games in last year s championship. Ballyduff relied on a couple of brilliant forwards Pádraig Boyle was in sensational form in the replay to keep them in touch. Kilmoyley were the more consistent team all over the pitch, but maybe lacking that killer instinct up front. Still as the Munster intermediate final showed last year a player of Daniel Collins calibre will carry you a long way. Some of Kilmoyley s younger forwards are a year older too Maurice O Connor and Jordan Brick and that additional seasoning should stand them and their club in good stead. Ballyduff, meanwhile, will welcome back Daniel O Carroll and Jack Goulding to the fold for the first time in this year s championship. Anybody who was at the recent All Ireland Under 21 B final will attest that Goulding, despite having played relatively little hurling this summer, is bang in form and likely to get better still. So who s going to win? Kilmoyley are probably still the better side Causeway were probably better than Ballyduff in their quarter-final despite losing out but if Mikey Boyle is cleared to play then he s certainly a man capable of driving his team to victory.
