3 Fáiltiú an Chathaoirligh Ba mhaith liom fáilte mór a cur roimh foireann Tír Eoghain agus cuirim fáilte fosta roimh muintir Ciarraí go dtí Stáid an Ghearaltaigh tráthnóna inniu. Fáilte freisin roimh na réiteoirí agus na n-oifigí coimh maith.tá súil agam go mbeidh cluiche iontach againn. I extend a warm welcome to the Tyrone football team, County board officers and supporters who have made the long journey to Killarney today. The last series of games in the Allianz Football League have provided afternoons of high drama over many years and the same will apply today in Division 1.This weekend represents the last round of the Allianz Football leagues and the results to date mean that the ultimate finalists will not be known until after all of today s games. A great football rivalry has developed between Kerry and Tyrone over the past number of years and with a number of permeations possible today both sides will want to take the two points from the game. Kerry Under 21 s - On Wednesday night last our U-21 footballers bridged a 9 year gap by winning the Munster football final at Páirc Uí Rinn in Cork. There was perhaps a little bit of irony in the fact that Kerry, by winning this game, have equalled the number of Munster titles won by Cork (26 titles each). The match also signalled the last in the U-21 competition which will now be replaced by the U-20 competition from 2018 onwards. We wish Jack O Connor, his management team and the players all the very best in their quest for All Ireland success over the coming weeks. Kerry will now play the Connaught winners (Sligo or Galway) on Easter Saturday 15th April dr. CroKes - I wish to heartily congratulate Dr. Crokes of Killarney on winning the All Ireland Senior Club football final on St. Patrick s day in Croke Park against Slaughtneil of Derry. This victory bridged a long gap of 25 years for the Club and we must make special mention of one of Kerry s great servants, Colm Cooper, who finally succeeded in winning this medal with his Club. second LeveL CoLLeges - We also congratulate Pobal Scoil Chorca Dhuibhne on winning the All Ireland Post Primary Schools Paul McGirr Cup for They defeated St. Patricks Maghera on Saturday last. PLay for Kerry - A few weeks ago we launched our new Fundraising Drive in order to underpin and enhance our Player Development Programme. Marc Ó Sé has very kindly agreed to be our Fundraising Ambassador and I would earnestly ask all our supporters and patrons to support this new initiative over the coming weeks, months and years. The cost is 100 per annum and there are a variety of unique and novel prizes to be won. Exact details on the Initiative and how to join are contained within this programme. BUÍoCHas - Thanks to all our supporters and patrons who travelled here today and who continue to support all our games in such great numbers. The attendances this year at the Allianz Football league games have been some of the highest ever underpinning the attractiveness of Gaelic Games for spectators. I hope that everyone enjoys this afternoon s game. Tadhg o Murchú, Cathaoirleach Coiste Chontae Chiarraí. 6 match preview THE intense rivalry between Kerry and Tyrone usually ensures that making any predictions about the outcome of today s crucial Allianz League clash is fraught with danger. Both Tyrone and Kerry could qualify for the League final depending on the result and results elsewhere so it will probably be a day when fans will be paying as much attention to their twitter feed as they will to what is actually happening on the pitch at the Fitzgerald Stadium. For Tyrone the scenario is relatively straight forward- win and they have a chance of being in the League final a loss or a draw means very little as they cannot be relegated. For Eamonn Fitzmaurice and Kerry, there are so many KERRY v TYRONEby MURT MURPHY Red Hands means Red alert for Kerry in unpredictable League variables that it is hardly worth expending energy in going the route of If Mayo beat Donegal by more than 4 points, providing Dublin beat Monaghan and Kerry beat Tyrone by more than 3 points then it would be a Kerry v Dublin League final, a repeat of last year s decider. However on the flip side of the coin for the Kingdom is an outside possibility of relegation - but only if Cavan beat already relegated Roscommon by a cricket score and Kerry lose to Tyrone by more than a few. So in summary Kerry have an outside chance of making the League final but they also have an outside chance of being relegated. Confused? Good so let s get on to the game and League form to date. Worryingly for them, in a year when they had four home games, Kerry has still got to win one having managed to draw their last two League games against Dublin and Cavan when leading by two points late on. So they have disappointingly failed to hold on for the two wins that would have seen them as favourites for a League final spot. Tyrone have fared poorly of late as well, losing their last Bryan sheehan (Ciarraí) holding on to the ball for all he is worth with Mark Winters and sean Cavanagh in close attention when the sides last met in the allianz League in fitzgerald stadium in (Photo: Kerry s eye) 06

7 ALLIANZ FOOTBALL LEAGUE - ROINN 1 - BÁBHTA 7 CIARRAÍ v TÍR EOGHAIN stephen o Brien (Ciarraí) in action gainst sean Cavanagh, (Tír eoghain) when the sides met in the in the all ireland semi final in (Photo: Kerry s eye) two League games after a decent start to the campaign and their biggest problem appears to be their failure to create enough scoring chances. However, at the other end Mickey Harte s side have conceded very little, an average of only 1-8 per game, They have only scored one goal in six outings while Kerry has managed five but crucially, none in their last two League outings. Kerry have been using the League to blood some younger players and players like Ronan Shanahan, Jack Barry, Adrian Spillane, Jack Savage and Kevin McCarthy have done their chances of being around for the championship no harm at all. However, the absence of Killian young, Shane Enright and James O Donoghue through injury has not helped Kerry s cause of late. The Kerry attack has not been firing on all cylinders with Paul Geaney scoring 3-27 of Kerry s total of 5-82 with Barry John Keane next in line with 1-9 off the bench. So Kerry will have to improve in the finishing department if they are to beat Tyrone and as Kerry have found out down the years, trying to beat the Tyrone blanket will not be easy. Tyrone manager Mickey Harte is set to be without both Mattie Donnelly and Ronan McNamee for this crucial clash. All Star midfielder Donnelly has been issued with a one game ban following an incident in the loss to Mayo last weekend and full-back McNamee is ruled out for the clash at Fitzgerald Stadium after suffering a broken bone in his hand in the same game. However, Tyrone with players of the quality of Peter Harte, Sean Cavanagh, Mark Bradley, Damien McCurry and Tiernan McCann are likely to make it extremely tough for the Kingdom. So another physical and low scoring contest between Kerry and Tyrone looks to be on the menu and with so much at stake it should be a game that will be decided in the final fifteen minutes. If Kerry can play with the same intensity as they did against Dublin then they can actually win a home game. After that it will be very much in the laps of the Gods but a Kerry win would mean that the home supporters would look forward to the Championship with fresh optimism. david Moran (Ciarraí) in action gainst sean Cavanagh, (Tír eoghain) when the sides met in the in the all ireland semi final in (Photo: Kerry s eye) 07

10 ALLIANZ FOOTBALL LEAGUE - ROINN 1 - BÁBHTA 7 Colm Cooper gets that coveted CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP MEDAL CIARRAÍ v TÍR EOGHAIN MasTerCLass! a study in concentration as Colm Cooper scores the only goal of the game as dr Crokes defeated slaughtneil to take the all ireland Club title for the second time. IT was fitting at the final whistle that the Tv cameras zoomed in upon him and the sheer joy which was apparent in a large personal ambition being fulfilled. 25 years after being there as the team s mascot for the club s inaugural success, Colm Cooper had finally won an All- Ireland Senior Club title to add to the plethora of medals he had achieved in a glittering career. 11 East Kerry Senior Championships, 10 Munster Senior tiles, Six County Championships and 5 All- Ireland medals have all been accumulated in the time since he first came to prominence in the early noughties but the Andy Merrigan Cup was the honour to allude Cooper up until two weeks ago. His quest for this honour became the subject of a marketing campaign by competition sponsors AIB Bank but having missed out on the chance in 2007 when Crossmaglen got the better of Dr Crokes after a replay one wondered with three consecutive All-Ireland semifinal defeats between 2012 and 2014 was it just not meant to be for Cooper in claiming an honour that really was living up to its billing as The Toughest. The 2014 semi-final defeat was undoubtedly the hardest for Cooper personally considering the injury that robbed him of over a year of football but when Dr Crokes began their 2016 quest a lot of things appeared to be falling into place for the club in making a successful 25th anniversary bridge to 92 a year when a fussy steward tried to prevent Cooper from going onto the pitch alongside the team! With an impressive management team comprised of the many different elements who (Photo: Sportsfile) 10

11 had tried hard for the club to get another All-Ireland title, the first step along the way was complete when the club replicated their 1991 County Championship success on the day that team was honoured by tradition. They also had the added bonus of laying to rest the ghosts of the nature of their defeat to Kenmare District (2016 opponents) back in With the club s 11th County title, the loss to Austin Stacks in the Club final mattered little as they got back into Munster as Bishop Moynihan Cup winners. The provincial campaign didn t present too many problems in winning a seventh Michael O Connor Cup bar a bit of frustration with their performance against Loughmore/Castleiney of Tipperary in the semi-final. However The Nire of Waterford presented Crokes with none of problems they gave them in the 2006 decider in giving them something to prepare for in the New year. It was an interesting omen that Corofin of Galway would be the same opposition for Crokes in the All-Ireland semifinal like at the same stage of their 1992 success. Defeat to Rathmore in the East Kerry Final before Christmas had raised some doubts about the team s ability ahead of another All-Ireland Club semifinal but this time the team were able to get over the penultimate hurdle thanks to two well-timed goals by Gavin O Shea and Jordan Kiely to dent the 2015 All-Ireland Club champions momentum. There daithi Casey (dr. Crokes) on that decisive run with Paul Mcneill (slaughtneil) in his wake in the all ireland Club Championship final at Croke Park on saint Patricks day. was a slight doubt about the game actually taking place on St Patricks Day of course due to Slaughtneil of Derry s heroics in both codes. However when an old friend of Crokes in Des Cahill s club Cuala beat Slaughtneil in the Hurling semi-final, then they could be certain they would be heading to Croke Park on (Photo: Kerry s Eye) dr. Crokes Captain, Johnny Buckley lifts the andy Merrigan Cup after defeating slaughtneil in the all ireland Club Championship final at Croke Park on saint Patricks day. the feast day of our patron saint. Floodlights and rain presented a totally different scene to that of the bright sunshine which the team triumphed in back in 92 but despite the concession of a first-half goal, Crokes found a way back through a green flag from none other than Cooper himself. The finish brought up memories of his last goal in an All-Ireland final, Kerry s 2011 loss to Dublin when a good share of the spotlight was on him as well when he was wearing the captain s armband. There was to be no repeat result five and a half years later however as after a second-half dominated by caution, Crokes finally did what many had expected of them for some time. What Cooper does from here on now, after getting the medal he coveted is unknown but he deserves the space to decide his own future - whatever it may be. by Jason o Connor (Photo: Kerry s Eye) 11

23 This round 5 Church & General National Football League game was played at Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney, on Sunday, 2 February The report in the Kerry s Eye newspaper sums up this game succinctly This was an impressive victory by the Kerry side, but the quality of the opposition must be taken into account. Kerry did what they had to do, however, and there were some fine performances, particularly by midfielder William Kirby, who had one of his best games in the green and gold jersey, while Maurice Fitzgerald was a class apart in everything he did. Kerry were on top in this game from start 20 YEARS AGO Sraith Náisiúnta Peile 1997 CiarraÍ 1-17 TÍr eoghain 1-8 to finish and leading at half time by 10 points ensured that the second half was merely of academic interest. 24 (Photo: Sportsfile) ALLIANZ FOOTBALL LEAGUE - ROINN 1 - BÁBHTA 7 CIARRAÍ v TÍR EOGHAIN What motivates Sean Cavanagh to keep going? By fintan o'toole The42.ie THREE ALL-IRELAND senior medals, five All-Star awards and a five-time Ulster senior title winner. It s an enviable collection of accolades yet even though he s turning 34 this year, Sean Cavanagh is not yet content to bask in the glow of past triumphs. Last winter he nailed his colours to the Red Hands mast again for 2017 and today gets set for another game against Kerry, a frequent opponent throughout his career. Another league campaign is drawing to a close for Cavanagh and Tyrone, a championship assault is just around the corner What motivates him to keep going? It is partly down to a fear of what happens after his intercounty days are over. It s been the life he has known since first donning a Tyrone senior jersey back in That is really scary. It s something that I ve thought about for the last couple of years and you are not sure what really does come next. Going to training on Tuesday and Thursday night has been your life for 16 years or whatever at county level, it will be really surreal whenever it does happen that that s not there. It would be an interesting documentary for somebody to do, to follow guys during that initial stage of walking away. I ve no doubt it will be difficult but yeah that s probably part of it, that I m almost afraid to walk away. Despite all the miles on the clock, his fitness is still holding up as well. I took a couple of months to think about it and during those couple of months all I could think about was going back. I had a couple of niggly injuries and I wanted to see how they would fare out. I m in reasonable condition injurywise so all those factors combined and then I had a chat with the family and the wife seemed to be happy enough to push me out to get fed somewhere else, so there was nothing telling me not to go back. I have a long life to live and if I can battle on for another year and get a bit of success out of it, I might as well do it when I m still loving it. My own instinct on it is to give it a rattle. Being part of a Tyrone team whose performance graph is on an upward curve helped influence his thinking as well. The county claimed the All-

25 Sean Cavanagh and Anthony Maher go high when the sides met in the Allianz League in Fitzgerald Stadium in 2014 Ireland U21 football title in 2015 before collecting Division 2 league and Ulster senior honours in They bowed out at the quarter-final stage of the All-Ireland series but there is a sense that Mickey Harte is assembling another team to have a shot at the elite. The fact that we have (a) really good team probably makes it hard to walk away because we probably do see ourselves in that top bracket at the moment. I remember guys that retired in 2002, 2004 or 2007 and we went on and won All Irelands the following year and I thought it would be too much of a risk almost. We were disappointing against Mayo and Mayo probably could have easily won it the first day against Dublin. We probably feel as if we can compete with the top teams." Last August's sending-off against Mayo was not the appropriate manner in which to conclude either for Cavanagh. Everyone has that fairytale thing of trying to go out on a high but it doesn t happen to virtually anyone in sport. But I had it in my head that if we were to get success this year I probably would have walked away, but because it finished on that sour note (I didn t). If we had won that game and lost the semi final, I probably would have come to the same conclusion to come back too. In making his decision to come back, he was keenly aware of the ferocious commitment that it would entail. Cavanagh had to be content with being sprung from the bench for Tyrone's first three league games. But he made his mark when kicking 0-3 after being introduced against Monaghan earlier this month and matched that tally in his first start against Cavan the following week. The commitment is mental, completely mental. There is no other way of putting it but at the same time if you didn t want to do it, you wouldn t do it. you realise you have to do it to compete but you do get hooked. you hear about people getting hooked on the gym, you get hooked on that feeling of trying to make yourself better. Whenever you get minutes playing with your county jersey on then, that s fun like. I still love that part of it too. 29 FROM THE ARCHIVES with ToM Morrison GOALS SEAL TYRONE S FIRST ULSTER TITLE IN 1956 Tyrone 3-5 Cavan 0-4 Dreams became a reality on a rain drenched pitch at Clones on the last Sunday of July 1956 when fifteen gallant Tyrone men humbled the mighty Cavan by 3-5 to 0-4 to win their first ever Ulster Senior title. Cavan were the reigning champions but much was expected of Jody O Neill s men beforehand goals from Jackie Taggart, Donal Donnelly and Iggy Jones fully restored pride to a famous county. Interest grew substantially in the subsequent weeks but Galway won a close in the All Ireland semi final on a score of 0-8 to 0-6 and the Tribesmen went on to defeat Cork in the final by 2-13 to 3-7. Tyrone lined out in the Ulster final as follows: Thady Turbett, Brian McSorley, Jim Devlin, Pat Donaghy, Sean Donnelly, Paddy Corey, John Joe O Hagan, Jody O Neill, Paddy Devlin, Iggy Jones, Jackie Taggart, Frank Donnelly, Michael Kerr, Frank Higgins, Donal Donnelly. subs: Hugh Kelly, Pat Quinn, Dermot McCluskey, Mick Cushenan, Hugh Donnelly, Michael Quinn. A DAY IN THE SUN FOR KERRY IN NATIONAL LEAGUE FINAL OF 1959 Kerry 2-8 derry 1-8 The most satisfactory aspect of Kerry s 2-8 to 1-8 victory over Derry in the 1959 National League Final was the intensity of effort to the very end. Over 32,000 spectators turned up at GAA HQ where the Kingdom won back the title after a lapse of 27 years. Derry, All Ireland finalists in 1958, who were appearing in their first final, were far from outclassed and were energised by an Owen Gribben goal in the second half. The redeeming feature of the decider from a Kerry viewpoint was a brace of goals by Tom Long and Jim Brosnan and other stars like Dan McAuliffe, Paudie Sheehy, John Dowling and Dave Geaney were also some of the players responsible for the eventual outcome. Kerry lined out as follows: Johnny Culloty, Jerome O Shea, Jack Dowling, Tim Tiger Lyons, Sean Murphy, Kevin Coffey, Mick O Dwyer, Mick O Connell, Seamus Murphy, Dan McAuliffe, Tom Long, Paudie Sheehy, Dave Geaney, John Dowling, Jim Brosnan. subs: Niall Sheehy, Denis O Shea, Sean Lovett, Garry McMahon, Moss O Connell, Tom Collins. Kerry went on to add the All Ireland title to their League title with victory over Galway in the final. AN CUIMHIN LEAT.20 BLIAIN Ó SHIN? Kerry and Tyrone meet in epic all ireland Minor semi final Back in 1997 Kerry and Tyrone met in the All Ireland Minor semi final and it took two games and extra time before Tyrone eventually made it through to an All Ireland final. In the drawn encounter Kerry looked to be heading for victory when three points from Noel Kennelly had them three clear going down the straight but Tyrone, spurred on no doubt by the tragic loss of Paul McGirr just two months earlier, hit back and Mark Harte levelled it to leave the sides deadlocked on 1-11 each. The replay two weeks later in Parnell Park was both dramatic and ground-breaking. The teams were level 11 times. Kerry forced and equaliser and the game went into extra time but Tyrone prevailed 0-23 to There was to be no fairy tale ending to the season for Tyrone however as Laois put back to back All Ireland titles together on a 3-10 to 1-14 scoreline. These were the teams that lined out in the drawn game: CiarraÍ: Niall Hobbart, Martin Beckett (RIP), Trevor McKenna, Niall Corbett, Stephen O Sullivan, John Hegarty, Paul MCarthy, Micheál O Shea, John Sugrue (C), William Harmon, Noel Kennelly, Tadhg Kennelly, Paul Galvin, Bernard O Connor, Kevin Lynch. Subs: Jimmy Doyle, Kieran Foley, Ronan O Connor (Ballyduff), John Moroney, Sean McGinley, John Golden, Liam Ó g Higgins, Ogie Horgan, Alan Lynch. TÍr eoghain: Gareth Maguire, Kevin O Brien, Cormac McGinley, Brendan Donnelly, Adrian Ball, Ciarán Gourley, Declan McCrossan (C), Cormac McAnallen (RIP), Conall Martin, Joe Campbell, Brian McGuigan, Stephen Donnelly, Mark Harte, Richard Thornton, Stephen O Neill. Subs: Aidan O Connor, Paddy Corry, Gary Hetherington, Kevin Hughes, Aidan Lynch, Ciarán Meenagh, Ciará O Hagan, Darren O Hanlon, Brian O Neill. The respective Management teams were: Ciarraí: Charlie Nelligan (Manager), Mikey Sheehy, Sean Walsh, Derry Crowley and Junior Murphy. Tír Eoghain: Mickey Harte (Manager), Fr. 30 ALLIANZ FOOTBALL LEAGUE - ROINN 1 - BÁBHTA 7 DARRAN DRIVES THROUGH THE PAIN BARRIER IN GLORY DAY FOR GLENBEIGH-GLENCAR By Jason o Connor CIARRAÍ v TÍR EOGHAIN darran o sullivan of glenbeighglencar evades the tackle of aidan girvan, rock saint Patricks in the Junior football all ireland final in Croke Park. (Photos: Kerry s eye) NOT many would have complained if he had decided that he couldn t continue any further at half-time given the glenbeigh-glencar captain Colin Mcgillicuddy lifts the cup after his teams victory over rock saint Patricks in the Junior football all ireland final in Croke Park. nature of his injury. However, Darran O Sullivan was willing to risk life and limb on Sunday February 19th for an All-Ireland Junior Club title with a Glenbeigh/Glencar club that had endured no shortage of heartache leading up to the club s biggest day in its history. The Mid Kerry side had seen the last five teams to beat them in Kerry in the grade go on to win a Munster title at the very least with the previous two, Brosna and Templenoe, immediately preceding them as All-Ireland Champions. In 2016 however, they finally managed to get to the county bounds they had been trying to leave. Aidan O Shea (a player whose own career was cut short much earlier than it should have been by injury) took the managerial helm and with less focus on trying to overcome their Junior heartache, Glenbeigh/Glencar appeared to thrive without the weight of expectation in Kerry this year. A difficult path to the decider with Na Gaeil dampened down many observer s view that this had to be their time. They lived on the edge in the drawn encounter with the Tralee side when finishing with 13 men but in not being defeated that they seemed to find the necessary endeavour to win the replay and embark on the road that brought them to GAA Headquarters. 30

31 Louisburgh of Mayo had presented them with a few problems in their All-Ireland semi-final success in Ennis but in overcoming a torrid start and finding the back of the net four times, Glenbeigh/Glencar had shown a new belief about their own abilities. O Sullivan scored a goal that lit up the internet in the aftermath of that win but his early goal in the decider with Rock St Patricks of Tyrone showed how focussed he was about winning another major honour in a different jersey. Along with O Sullivan s own injury problems, a number of dismissals for both sides created its own challenges but as the game neared injury-time Glenbeigh/Glencar found themselves in arrears. Bernard Murphy s introduction and Rock indiscipline dragged O Sullivan s side back into proceedings however as additional time was very much a game in itself. Despite the fact that the Tyrone side were down to twelve men, they nearly engineered an unlikely victory from a 45 that saw Glenbeigh/Glencar goalkeeper Rory O Connor produce a top corner save that a certain Gordon Banks in a different code would have been proud of. O Sullivan, with his limitations at the time and now domiciled in the full-forward line, completed a 1-3 total for a three points win. Man-of-the-Match awards are nothing new to O Sullivan given what he has won for his county and district in the last decade or so. However it s likely he will never forget the one he got for foregoing his own personal limitations and ensuring he would join a unique list of inter-county players to have won All-Ireland medals for both club and county. a determined Jack Brosnan of glenbeigh -glencar in action against aidan Mcgarrity (rock saint Patricks) in the Junior football all ireland final. 31
