4 The rise in female football participation over the past few years has been astronomical. The introduction of AFLW in 2017 capitalised and has driven further growth at community level. Until 2015 female participation in the Goulburn Murray had been rising steadily. The Youth Girls competition run by the Shepparton DJFL consisted of five teams and there was growing interest in school competitions, particularly at the secondary level. This set the platform for the expansion of Youth Girls to represent clubs from other parts of the region and the commencement of the Northern Country Women s League in 2017 in partnership with AFL Central Victoria and AFL Central Murray. This is on top of increases in female participation at Auskick level, U14 boys and the growth of female talent programs. This scenario has stimulated the need for the AFL Goulburn Murray Commission to take a more strategic view of female football and develop a strategy to direct the growth of the game. Commencing with the region s first Female Football Forum on 22 November this Female Football Strategy brings together the objectives and aspirations of stakeholders and will drive a coordinated female football development program across the region.
