3 A Letter from Their Excellencies To all who receive this letter, greetings from Wulfgang and Iseulte, Baron and Baroness Caer Mear. It is with great distress that We report skirmishes on Our borders. Parties from Marinus have been determined to be transporting spicy potato products and purloined piggery through Caer Mear despite attempts to avoid detection (and taxation). The individuals in question, amid taunts entered into the Book of Faces, proceeded unhindered through neighboring Tir-y -Don. Should these activities continue, we will be forced to defend Our borders once again. The new Baronial chairs made their debut at Tir-y-Don s Baronial Birthday celebration. All of Our cousins tested them out to wide acclaim. Unfortunately, once again your dainty Baroness finds herself coming up a bit shy of touching the ground when seated. Furthermore, once the chair cushions have been completed, the distance between Her feet and the ground will be even greater. Therefore, it is deemed necessary to find a suitable solution. Donations of defeated foes, large watermelons, piles of yarn, or other such sundries will all be considered. Suggestions welcomed. Several officer positions have opened up in recent months. Rather than falling back on the usual game of musical chairs, We welcome and encourage volunteers. However, please be advised that not only will you be trained to fulfill a valued office, you will be expected to provide important contributions such as clapping on beat during sing-alongs, fire-hoop jumping, jocular ribbing, and at least one dramatic moment. 4 Chapter and Verse This month I am proud to offer a review by Lord Balin. I m sure you will enjoy it!! The Knight of Shadows also rises! If you like stories about Knights, if you like Batman, if you like BBC s Sherlock series, then Toby Venables sophomore effort, Knight of Shadows is for you! Set in the end of the year 1191, the story has familiar foundations and characters; the lead is Sir Guy of Gisburne, a name known to fans of the Robin Hood tales. Usually a bumbling foil in the service of the Sheriff of Nottingham, here Sir Guy is the protagonist, and the tale is told from his point of view. However, the story is not a simple retread of those old tellings, merely from a different point of view. Instead, Venables takes a completely different perspective. The struggle between Richard and John is still integral to this telling, but now Richard is the absentee king who doesn t speak the English tongue and prefers the Continent to his island; John is still a schemer, but also an administrator of great skill who actually cares for the kingdom he will one day inherit. It s a bit of a reversal, but doesn t feel falsely so; this isn t a mirror-universe sci-fi trope where all the good guys are now bad and run around with goatees. Instead, the differences seem well researched and perhaps even more believable than the traditional view. If this seems like a big change, the role reversal between the two main fictional characters, Guy and The Hood is even more drastic. Sir Guy is still a knight, and still in service to King John. But the ineptness is gone. In fact, this is another area where the Batman comparison can be drawn. Guy s character feels almost overly competent. But instead of detracting from the story, that element helps to make the book what it really is in the end: a fun read. Against a very well researched background, Venables manages to weave a classic adventure tale that somehow doesn t feel stale. A big part of that is his relationship between Sir Guy and his squire, Galfrid. Their banter and loyalty felt reminiscent of the chemistry between Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman in the BBC series Sherlock. There are no big battles or other pivotal historical events that serve as a backdrop for this story (other than Gisburne s flashbacks to the Crusades) so fans of writers like Bernard Cornwall might come away disappointed. Yet there is still plenty of medieval action and suspense. The book is marked as Fantasy, but the fantastic elements are mostly in the scientific and engineering veins, rather than magical. While it requires some suspension of disbelief (and what good story doesn t) Venables doesn t stretch it too far, and the fantastic elements come away as acceptable. A short, quick read at 544 pages, Knight of Shadows should provide a few evenings worth of easy entertainment. 4

5 IMPORTANT NEWS FROM THE EXCHEQUER Newsflash! The IRS has revoked the non-profit status of the Society for Creative Anachronism. They have chosen to invoke Special Rule o-he11 which allows them to go back the full seven years for audit. All income made from events for the preceding seven years are now subject to corporate tax rates. All bank accounts belonging to the SCA and its subordinate bodies have been seized to pay seven years worth of back taxes. Fortunately, Caer Mear has already paid the site fee for our annual event, so we have a place to hold it, and the insurance rider has already been supplied to Tom Scott Park. However, since we had not yet paid for the port-a-johns, we will not have extra potty space this year so the building currently on site will have to do for all participants. Also, since the golf cart has not been reserved, we are asking the equestrian community to assist the Autocrat in getting around the site. 6 From Bishop Amos le Pious. MIC of Ruby Joust Nine Gems in the crown of the slain King, Nine tournaments to test the prowess and valor of Atlantia s bravest warriors. FRIDAY ~ The first tournament will be a Deed of Arms at the tolling of vespers. Noble warriors of Atlantia, make bold challenges and meet your opponent as the sun wans and at twilight strike mighty blows to create a spectacle that will be remembered for ages. While the challengers strive upon the field there will be a revel for all to enjoy the evening while witnessing the deeds. ~ This tournament begins on Friday at 8:00pm and will be open to all who wish to issue a challenge in any number of weapons forms and among any number of opponents. You can make your challenge before you arrive or make a challenge to any who would take the field. While the tournament progresses there will be a revel open to all where there will be tables set for refreshments and libations games of skill and chance, singing and dancing. SATURDAY ~ In the morning the Grand tournament the great test of skill and honor will commence, the quest for the Gem prizes, The Ruby chivalry tournament, two of the greatest warriors will win the most coveted prizes in all of Atlantia. ~ The Ruby prize tournament will begin at 11:00am and is open to all combatants it will be fought as a standard double elimination tournament with no weapons restrictions. This will be the main tournament of the event. ~ Following the main tournament the Traveling order of Saint Sensuous will host a bold contest. Four warriors will band together in harness and bearing great swords and contest other bands at the bearer with a multitude of great blows. ~ This is the first in a new series of traveling tournaments to promote life at the bearer. Teams of four will fight counted blows of three over a bearer with two handed swords until one team is victorious. This tournament will be a bear pit style tournament open to all who are authorized in great weapons. ~ Bring forth there finest ransoms and fight in height of 12th century fashion in the ransom melee that will fought under the trees in the ravine. ~ This melee is open to all fighters who will be divided into two teams that will face each other in the ravine, fighters can be captured by striking them with a certain amount of telling blows and then escorting them back to the list table, once there the captured fighter must negotiate his ransom with his captor and once a ransom has been agreed and recorded the captured fighter may return to there team. 6

7 ~ To close the first day of contests warriors will gather at dusk to Honor the Heroes who have fallen in battle. ~ This tournament is open to all members of the armed services current and retired or any fighters who are sponsored by a member of the armed services who is not fighting in the tournament. Fighters will represent one of the branches of the service and fight in a bear pit style tournament to determine which branch will win the day. SUNDAY ~ Sunday morning will see those newest to the life of arms gather to test themselves against their peers in the Novice Tournament sponsored by the Company of the Cross and Lily ~ This tournament is open to all fighters who have been authorized under two years and will be fought in a double elimination format. ~ Next the Order of the Kraken will hold the field and test all challengers with matched weapons so that they may test themselves against the might of the Kraken. ~ This tournament is open to all fighters, the members of the order of the Kraken will hold the field all other fighters may challenge any Kraken to any number of fights with any weapons form. The members of the order will choose the fighter that has impressed them the most on the day. ~ Come experience Poseidon s Anvil, where those who would be called the best Unbelts in Atlantia will test there prowess against the finest members of the Order of the Chivalry in a series of challenges designed to push your prowess to the limits. ~ This is a demo for a new style of tournament that will be open to a select number of unbelts who are authorized in multiple weapons forms. ~ Still not had enough fighting? The tournaments will end with a Grand Melee in the ravine that will be ninety minutes of old school resurrection throw down. Will you have what it takes to survive? ~ A straight up resurrection meat grinder that will last 90 minutes or until one fighter remains standing. 10 A Missive from the Webminister Oyez, Oyez! As I awoke on this fine Spring morn and reached for my flagon of juice from the java bean, something just didn't feel right but, what could it be? I decided to sit down at my magical writing desk and gaze into the ether to see if I could discern the trouble. As I peered into the swirling mass of information I noticed something strange afoot. It seems that the world was going mad! Suddenly I felt a terrible foreboding. What could it be? NO! I immediately turned my mind to our fair Barony's lands amongst the vast spider's web connecting us all. Slowly, as it came into focus, something seemed...off. Inverted as it were. It was as if the world had turned on it's axis! As I attempted to peer past the strange image on the Barony's gateway to see what was behind the madness, I was overwhelmed with a sudden rush of euphoria, happiness even! Please, if you, our gentle readers, have any intimations as to how to solve our dilemma, please visit our lands in the ether and leave me a missive with your thoughts. 11 A letter from the Seneschal Greetings unto the populous. I wanted to let you know about a few small changes. 1) We are now going to have a short business meeting every Tuesday from 7pm to 8 pm and everyone is required to attend. 2) All fighters and fencers must be in armor for the business meeting. 3) All teachers must now have a teaching certificate before teaching a class. 4) Every other fighter practice will be held on Thursday instead of Tuesday and we will have no fighting on the third Tuesday of the month. Thank you for all your attention to these changes. Naomi Macailpein Seneschal for the Barony of Caer Mear Just a few thoughts from your Chronicler This is my last issue with you. A fairly wise man once told me that the SCA was like sausage. You should never see what goes into the making of it but just enjoy the tasty goodness of the end result. There has certainly been some great highs and very lows in editing the QD.I hope that, in the end, you have enjoyed it.
