5 Drought Action Plan for Threatened Freshwater Native Fish in the SA MDB was developed in High level objective: To ensure post-drought recovery of threatened native freshwater fish in the SA MDB. Focus: River Murray corridor from the border to the CLLMM with particular interest in the CLLMM region. Aims: To mitigate the impacts of compounding drought and over allocation of water resources on threatened native fish communities. Funding: State gov , one-off emergency contingency funding through MDBA, NFS 2009

10 Rescue phase So why rescue and what has been happening to our native fish habitats? When landscape scale conservation efforts fail highly threatened and endangered native freshwater fish targeted effort is required.

39 4. Critical Environmental Water Case Study: Boggy Creek. Late 2008 hundreds of Critically Endangered Murray hardyhead were discovered at a site in the CLLMM region (Boggy Creek)= Placed an Environmental watering bid as site was drying fast
40 We were successful with the bid but the paperwork held up delivery. While we were waiting the site dried! Photo Feb 09
41 so we rescued fish before it dried and held them in a tank nearby waiting for the water to be signed off waiting
42 Fish living in the temporary tank while the site was watered and WQ stabilised
43 Site was finally watered in May Fish were returned to the site and recent monitoring revealed that the fish had spawned as juvenile Murray hardyhead were sampled. Since 2009 TLM has assisted with e-water and the site has become secure.
44 Restoration phase Captive breeding Surrogate refuge Wild Reintroductions = ensuring post-drought recovery in a long-term meaningful way Engage community Restore sites Integration of indigenous values and participation Reinstate aquatic & riparian veg Ensure food web structure & WQ requirements are met Research genetics for optimal reintroduction success over time (ARC linkage grant)
45 Key Messages Retaining refuge sites is critical to preventing local extinctions Bottom up approach has driven this program, we now need top down Effectively combining resources and programs across agencies such as DENR, SA MDB NRM Board, MDBA and CEWH = success There is a great need to develop a solid strategy and funding support for the conservation of native fish in SA. State drought funding is almost over!! We are looking for support and ideas
46 Where to from here? Are we out of Drought? What is our strategy post reactive drought mode? Over a few mere months we have gone from extreme dry to minor wet in SA MDB New issues of connectivity, investment of resource throughout drought and beyond Where do climate change predictions fit?
