2 REEF BREEZES August 24 th 2018 Ph: Fax: (VICE-) CAPTAIN S CORNER Score of the week On Wednesday afternoon I was down at the club doing the days presentation and could not believe Tony Hanson was the winner for B grade with 39 points! Good sport as Tony is, he was at the presentation telling everyone that wanted to listen about his fine round of golf. Afterwards I asked Tony what he puts his fine play down to: Tony has gone from a size 42 to size 36, he is at the gym most mornings getting fit and he gets a sports massage on a Monday and Friday to keep him loose for golf. Well done Tony keep up the good work! Combined Services Golf Day Entries are filling up quick for the Combined Services Golf Day on Monday 17 th September. It is a fun day on the course with novelty events, a $20,000 Hole in One prize and plenty of fundraising for Legacy. Tickets are $70 for members and $80 for guests which includes Golf, Lunch, Drinks and prizes. Hope the week has been good for you! Captain Les is off on a holiday and will be back next week. I guess everyone has had enough of the windy cold weather and are looking forward to some spring golf in the coming weeks! The course was closed Monday and Tuesday for Spring greens renovation, reports in from our Super Intendant Peter Donkers, all went well. Fingers crossed we get the expected rain this weekend to help the greens flourish in their recovery. Men s Foursomes Championship Last weekend we had the Men s Foursomes final for all grades, congratulations to the winners! In A grade played over 36 holes the game was tight after the first 18 holes with a 1up lead to Matty Saad and Mark Cruise. The second 18 holes, Matty and Mark asserted their authority to win 8&6. In B grade played over 18 holes Barry Murray and Neil Hitchcock defeated Gary McManus and Peter Andrews 3&2. Special mention for team Murray and Hitchcock as Neil is in C Grade. In the history of the club I think it may be a record that someone has won a championship playing in a lower grade? In C grade played over 18 holes Bobby Nicholls and his pal Bill Chapman defeated Scott Irwin and Rick Christensen. Also, we have a large raffle on the day and if yourself or your business are in a position to donate a prize, it would be greatly appreciated. All sponsors will be acknowledged on the day. Juniors The South Coast Junior Masters Long Reef Golf Club will be well represented this weekend at the South Coast Junior Masters. Best of luck to Kai, Noah, Millie and Harry. Long Reef have entered a team in the Junior Pennant, which starts in October. This year we have minimal travel playing Bayview, Mona Vale, Roseville, Monash, Pymble. Our team is Cian Hughes, Chun-ta Wu, Kai Komulainen, Noah Komulainen, Jack Davies, Harry McKerihan. C Grade Club Championship Timesheet The time sheet for the first round of the C Grade Club Championships on Saturday 15 th September will be released to C Grade golfers only on Friday 31 st August. This will be a manual timesheet and will be available at from 5pm. Have a great week everyone! Mark Stevens Vice Captain
3 FROM THE WOMEN Our annual celebration took place today to celebrate the end of our Pennant season. Players and Caddies Day comprises golf, lunch and presentation of awards for the season. Whilst we have had minimal success this year the Long Reef spirit has been evident and the support for the teams outstanding. Thank you to the Convenors- Gilda Severino, Jen Jansson, Karen Smith, Leonie Malcolm and Wendy Millson who have guided the teams well, supporting the Field Captains. Much appreciation to those women chosen to Captain the sides-sandra Gillies and Natalie Driver, Rosemary West and Karen Smith, Jenny Watts, Prue Bardsley and Larka Kliman. With additional focus and initiatives, we will look for a greatly improved showing in A huge thank you to the catering and hospitality staff for their wonderful work and support during our Pennant season. We are the envy of all clubs with our lunches and view. The warmth extended by Steph Bull and the waitstaff to our visitors is to be admired. Congratulations to Pete Donkers and the course staff for their efforts with the Course renovations this week. The course and gardens look superb and will improve with the anticipated rain this weekend. We are delighted to announce our participants in the Bronze Medallion on September 6 th. Prue Bardsley and Julie Simpson will head to Monash, whilst Gay McCorby and Jan Daniel complete the team and will play at Manly. Upcoming events Thurs 30 th Aug Final round of Supervets for those aged 70 and above. Tues 4 th Sept Owing to Corporate day Member golf afternoon shotgun Sun 16 th Sept Round 1 Women s Weekend premiership- Stroke (this is open to all 6 and 7 day members and is a 2 round event. * it will serve as a club medal round for 7 day women members). He sees the rake about 3 metres from his ball, so places his 2 clubs on the floor of the bunker. He retrieves the rake and as he returns to the area of the ball he rakes the footprints to tidy up the bunker. He stops raking about 1 club length before reaching the ball, and places the rake on the sand in the bunker. He plays his ball out of the bunker, smooths the sand and climbs out after picking up his second club. How many penalty strokes has Jeremy incurred? (a) 6 (b) 4 (c) 2 (d) 0
4 FROM THE ARCHIVES More characters. I am sure we all know where Jamieson Park is - down by Narrabeen the Lake. Just in case you don t know who it was named after - here he is! He was the Shire Clerk of Warringah Council at the time a letter was received from C.F. Martin in Sept with the request that the Council consider allowing a group of like-minded enthusiasts to start a golf Club on the Long Reef Headland. It seems likely that he was one of the locals also an enthusiast that jumped at the idea. He did not attend the very first meeting on the 14th May 2021, but he had been suggested as the Club s Treasurer by the next meeting a week later, which he attended. He accepted the position and remained in charge of the finances of Long Reef for the next six years. It was such a great advantage for the Club to have a direct line of communication to the Council, and many requests made by the golf club were granted immediately! This cartoon was drawn in He remained on the Committee after resigning as Treasurer as one of the 6 Vice Presidents the club had at that time. He was a Vice-President from The photo of A.J. Rawnsley was taken from the 1927 panoramic photo that hangs in the Bar. Little is known about him other than he was on the Club Committee from and Captain from , but these were the years when work on the course extended it from a 9 hole to an 18 hole course, by draining the swamp. As Captain it is most likely that he was very much involved in the project. (Having gained permission via R.G. Jamieson to proceed with the changes!) He looks a little worried by it all. F. Harries. Don t know anything about this member, other than that he has a great sense of style and a great hat! Note the small bag and his three or four clubs. Sandra Mellowes R.G. Jamieson - Shire Clerk and Long Reef Treasurer L-R Unknown, R.G. Jamieson, unknown
5 Well the winter competition seems to be bringing out the best in our players with many scores this week in the 40 s and high 30 s. Dave Quinn still holds the lead with 149 points from his best 4 rounds, with another seven players in the 140 s and others with 2 or 3 good scores just needing another good round to get in the mix. You can check you scores on the Friday club desk. Two weeks to go and an exciting finish for the trophy and the prizes for the top three finishers. The winners of last week s fine wine draw were Greg Black and Sue Telfer. Again, just two weeks and four more bottles to go. Similarly, Brian Leonard s health continues to improve and he is hopeful of getting a golf club in his hands before too much longer to at least do some practice on the range and sink a few putts. Meanwhile, we have quite a number of Members who have undergone surgery of one kind or another such that the word reconstruction is heard more often on the course these days than fore, with Dicky Knee being well to the fore! Included in this category, and in differing stages of rehabilitation, we have Graham Bone, John Davison and Dennis Hughes, while Brian Tapp and Craig Wood are progressing well after shoulder operations. Vice- Captain Mark Stevens is battling a carpal tunnel issue. When these Members return to the links, I say beware the bionic burglar!! We extend our best wishes to each of these colleagues, and indeed, to all Members who are being inconvenienced by injury or illness at this time. Brian Cummins Welfare Coordinator.
