2 REEF BREEZES RULES WITH GEORGE November 2 nd 2018 Ph: Fax: office@longreefgolfclub.com.au FROM THE PRESIDENT Proposed Parking Changes The Roads & Maritime Services plan to introduce the following clearway hours in both directions on Pittwater Rd to ease traffic congestion. 6am to 7pm Weekdays 9am to 6pm on weekends and public holidays These changes will have major impacts on businesses, clubs, sporting venues, surf clubs and residential areas particularly in terms of parking. The proposal involves converting unrestricted onstreet parking to timed parking as well as the introduction of new parking spaces. Available parking for LRGC members is presently inadequate. We believe that the current proposal will exacerbate the parking situation and create more difficulties for our golfing community. Nearby residents will also be adversely impacted as a result. As the proposal now stands there will be no additional parking spaces to accommodate the Tennis, Cricket and Golf Club patrons on Anzac Avenue. We have in the past and will continue to lobby Council to address the parking situation. We will also raise our concerns about the proposed changes to Pittwater Rd. In the meantime I would ask members to write to both the Council <northernbeaches.nsw.gov.au Search Collaroy car parking> and the Roads & Maritime Services clearways@rms.nsw.gov.au to voice your concerns. Letters to local government ministers will also assist. Thank you, QUESTION: Playing the ninth hole, Tim hit his drive well to the right with the possibility that it may have gone into some trees or into a water hazard. He announced that he would play a provisional and drove the ball well past where his first ball was likely to be and straight up the middle. After a brief search his first ball was found in a lateral water hazard in deep water and certainly not playable. Which of the following is correct? a. Tim may abandon his original ball and continue to play his provisional from well up the fairway. b. Tim must abandon his provisional and play his original ball under Rule 26-1 penalty one stroke. His next stroke will be his third. c. Tim was not permitted to play a provisional ball if there was a chance that his ball was in a water hazard. He incurs an additional penalty of 2 strokes for playing the provisional from the tee. 3 CAPTAIN S CORNER Men s Championship, A Reserve, B & C Grade It was a real Long Reef day with a strong southerly to test the players over 36 holes. The 2018 Club Champion is Matt Saad, who defeated our youngest finalist Kai Komulainen 3/1. I had the privilege of refereeing the whole match and with the tough conditions both Matt and Kai played exceptional golf. Kai surprised his older opponent birdying 2 with a 3 wood to 6ft and playing par golf for a 2up lead after 9. Matt rallied and won 4 of the next 5 holes to go to lunch 2up. In the afternoon Matt edged his lead to 4 up after 12 but Kai didn t falter and reduced the deficit to 2 holes with 4 to play. A mistake on 15 by Kai had Matt dormie but not deterred Kai won 16, but a gimmie par for Matt on 17 sealed the match. A Reserve saw the consistent Andrew Koch get off to a good start against Simon Couch and didn t surrender the lead to win 4/3 B Grade s leading qualifier, Peter Munro continued his good form with a strong win over last year s C Grade Champ David Karlsson 7/6. In C Grade Anthony Papandrea was looking comfortable being 4 up with as many to play but Neil Lucy took him to the 36 th to delay the presentation. Congratulations to all players as each match was played in good spirit. It was pleasing to see the 60+ followers supporting the players and evidence that the Match Play format is the way to go. Identify your Ball We seem to have increasing incidences of players playing the wrong ball; this not only incurs a penalty, it delays play. Please ensure you put a distinguishing mark on your ball and check it is yours before playing a shot. Visit to Goulburn Sun 11 Nov There are spots available for this annual match to Goulburn. Matches were close and there were many moments of excitement for the spectators. See Les Browne s Captain s Corner for a detailed description of the event. We wish our just-elected Directors all the best as they embark on their duties for the remainder of 2018 and into Congratulations to President Steve Twigg, Vice President John Davison, Captain Les Browne, Vice-Captain Mark Stevens, Treasurer John Steuart and Board Members Elaine Coldham, Natalie Driver, Doug Mansfield and Dragan Mitrovic. The Collaroy Surf Life-Saving Club is conducting its second Boaties Big Food (groceries) Drop for farmers experiencing drought, on Sunday November 4. See the lifeguards on duty at Collaroy Surf Club between 9am and 1pm. Thanks for your generosity. Sandra Gillies has returned from South Australia where she played in the Australian Women s Senior Championship. Sandra has played in this event for over 20 years with some considerable success but was disappointed with the way she played this year. However, as the event was played in the Barossa Valley, consolation was always at hand. She was very impressed with the quality of golf played by the winner of the Championship. Vale Nancye Hohnen who passed away Friday November 26. Nancye was a much loved member of our club for 43 years. A private funeral was held on Thursday. Condolences, including flowers, have been sent to husband Allan and family on behalf of Long Reef GC members. Nancye was a popular member and a delight to play golf with. She and her husband, Allan, a long-time member, were staunch supporters of the Sunday competition in addition to the regular members individual completions. She joined the golf club in 1972 and was a member for 43 years, until ill health forced her to give up golf. Our deepest sympathy goes to Allan and his family.

5 JUNIOR PENNANTS Round 4 of the Junior Pennants saw the team take on group leaders Roseville at Monash; only a win would keep the chance of the finals alive. It proved to be a tight affair. Mitchell got the team underway, finding himself down early against an opponent who was playing much better than his handicap suggested, he never let him get too far ahead, winning holes at vital times. Walking off the 14th green 1 down Mitchell then won 3 holes on the bounce to take out the match, holing a 10 foot putt on the 17th. Harry was the only one of the boys to get off to a good start but by the turn was a couple down. Still playing good golf it was only a matter of time that the match would turn with his opponent finding trouble. Harry just kept hitting fairways and greens, winning 15 and 16 for a 3 and 1 win. Noah didn t really get going today. Two down at the turn his day got worse when his opponent was in front of him at the halfway house to take the last pie. Noah wasn t happy! Three down after 10 Noah dug deep, got himself back to 1 down after winning the 14th but gave the next hole straight back which all but ended his match. We were all impressed with his fight back over the back 9. Jack faced a younger opponent who like a lot of the Roseville boys were good around the greens. Two down early, Jack just needed to stay patient and chances would come, which they did. One up at the turn he took control. Three up with 3 to play a few jitters set in, but smashing a drive down the 18th and seeing his partner go into a hazard set him up for a 2 up win. Cian played well today but his putter let him down on the fast greens. Giving himself opportunities to win holes he just didn t like to take advantage but he didn t give up, taking his match to the 17th and just missing out. Chunta 3 down after 8 had to show some fighting spirit, which he did, and he started to take advantage of his opponent s mistakes. All square on the 17th and making a par to go 1 up ended up giving the team a vital half point. Match score win. With other results going our way we now head the group going into the last round. A positive result this Sunday at home versus Monash will see the boys head into the play offs. I m away this weekend so thank you to Mick Snell and Les Browne who will be helping out on the day. Tee off time is 11am. If anyone has a spare hour or two please pop down to support the boys in their push for the finals. 6 FROM THE ARCHIVES The display in the glass-topped cabinets at the top of the stairs in the Pro-shop now shows five different ledgers that say something about golf at Long Reef in the 50s. Four are hand written by the Club Secretary or his Assistant Secretary. The largest ledger is the Membership book for men and women in all categories for the 1950s. It is left open at one of the B pages, (as in Browne!) as well as other details showing fees paid and occupations. A Window dresser, Optometrist, and Army officer are included. Looking to the mid-year of the decade we know that in there were 346 Members (men) and 167 Associates (women.) There is also the Women s Minute book from the late 50s to see, signed until 1956 by the long serving President of 16 years Annis Soutar. A Club Committee Report Book is open at a random page, and there is an example of Golf and Bowls Green fees in another. For the month of October in 1955 the total green fees were 143 pounds and 12 shillings, plus 22 pounds 6 shillings for the bowls fees. Most interesting is the Men's Results book. It has been left open showing Saturday October It was a Stoke round for the Monthly Medal and the President s trophy. 91 men played and the one medal was won by N.R. Lock (12) with a 66. The Scratch was won by Des Lofthouse (1) with a 72. Five pounds and eight shillings were collected in green fees on the day. In 1955 Wally Smith was Captain and Gus Widmer the President. Annis Soutar was in her last year as Women s President and Miss Kay Derrin was Captain. Ruby Watts had just won her third Club Championship with three more wins to come and Des Lofthouse had also just won his third Championship with nine more to come. Mr and Mrs Benneaves were making the sandwiches for special days like the Goulburn Club reciprocal competitions, which commenced in The Professional Frank Eyre was into his 33rd year of service and the Greenkeeper Mr Vic McManus had been at the Club since In the mid 50s he had at least four assistants and by 1959 an extra staff member was employed for the Bowling Green. The Secretary Manager was also long standing. Jim Alderdice started in 1947 and retired in 1966, the same year as he was created a Life Member. Next week we will look at the Assistant Secretaries. From the opening of the Club to Jim Alderdice s time there had been four Secretary Managers A. P. Lambert ( Hon. Sec. from ) O. D. Meares R. H. Godby Acting Secretary resigned July 1945 (O.D. Meares on military service) H. Hearson Acting Hon Secretary O.D. Meares Jim Alderdice. ( Life Member 1966) Sandra Mellowes RULES WITH GEORGE ANSWER: b is correct. Even though the original ball may be in a water hazard, a player is entitled to play a provisional ball if the original ball may also be lost outside the water hazard or be out of bounds. In such a case, if the original ball is found in the water hazard, the provisional ball must be abandoned...rule 27-2c, and Decision 27-2a/2.2 apply. The strokes made with the provisional ball and any penalties incurred solely by playing that ball are disregarded. Example of a 1950 s Medal
