1 Newsletter of Shortland Waters Golf Club 20th September, 2017 FROM THE SHED (at 3.00pm Friday afternoon) We had a real taste of what s to come this week with some really warm spring weather on Wednesday. Fortunately a change brought a little rain, 14mm which was much needed and just enough to freshen the course up. On the course the greens are coming back well after renovations and we cored and fertilized the tees to get them moving as well. Now we can focus on cleaning up a lot of leaf litter and getting the fairways growing. Next week s tasks, weather permitting; Roll greens. Apply fungicide to greens. Cut green surrounds. Cut fairways. Cut tees. Mow rough. 2 NEW CLUBHOUSE Those people who have requested Honour Boards existing clubhouse we did ask to remove them by 11 th September. We are still awaiting return of the Honour Boards being photographed as an archive record and we ask that you contact Dennis McGuirk with any questions you may have on this. The kitchen has now ceased trading and will reopen when the new club commences. The beer chilling and dispensing equipment will need to be transferred to the new clubhouse. This will occur this Sunday 24 th September and we will no longer be able to sell beers on tap. We will only be able to sell packaged beer. MELBOURNE CUP DAY Due to the lack of certainty about the actual opening date of the new clubhouse, our Lady golfers have cancelled their traditional lunch and cup day festivities. However, they will still be playing golf that morning. That decision has been made now so that people can make other arrangements for the afternoon. UPCOMING EVENTS Invitation Day is on this Saturday 23 rd of September. Hopefully members have invited some visitors to come along to show off the development progress. The new 2 nd Hole will be in play on Saturday. Lady golfers are welcome to play on this day and invite a friend to come along and participate. We are arranging for Aveo to have a viewing platform in place adjacent to the 15 th Tee so that visitors can have a quick look at what is happening on the new holes. Aveo Classic Monday 2 nd October, To replace the Steelworks Cup this year whilst the course redevelopment is in progress, Aveo have agreed to sponsor an event open to all grades on that day named the Aveo Classic. The Flyer (copy attached), Entry Form and Conditions of Play as well as Online Registration are available on the website on the NEWS page. There is also a direct link from the HOME page. There are plenty of spots available on the timesheet on the computer should you wish to book a tee time. All going well, both of the new holes should be in play for the Men s Yamaha Club Championships commencing on Saturday 7 th October.

4 The month of October is going to be a very busy time. In addition to the Aveo Classic, as mentioned above, the Men s Yamaha Club Championships commences on 7 th October and will conclude on 28 th. The Lady s Club Championships commence next Tuesday 26 th September and conclude on 3 rd October. The Mixed Foursomes event will be held on Sunday 15 th October. The Men s Foursomes event will be held on Sunday 29 th October over 27holes. SLOW PLAY Club championships are coming up for all of our golfers. Everybody will want to play and play well. Nobody wants to have their day spoilt by slow play. Here are some tips that help us all avoid slow play not only for Club Championships but good habits at all times. Discuss with your partners about Ready Golf don t worry about whose honour it is, whoever is ready first, play. Walk briskly between shots and from green to tee. Clear the green promptly. Any disputes, discussions or writing of scorecards should be done on the next tee. Think about your next shot as you approach your ball. Be ready sooner. If you are falling behind or searching for a ball and the group behind is waiting, call them through. You are allowed 5 minutes to search for a ball but don t make the group behind wait those 5 minutes. If you do this, searching becomes less frantic and increases your chances of finding the ball which will make everybody happy. Prepare for your putt while others are putting. Cleaning your ball and reading the putt shouldn t be left until it is your turn to putt. Leave your cart or buggy to the side of the green nearest the next tee please don t leave it in front of the green. Check the time after 6, 9 or 12 holes and see how your group is going. Aim to get around the course in a maximum of 4 hours. These little things can make everybody s day more enjoyable.

5 B GRADE PENNANTS The B Grade Pennants team had a Bye this week. Next week our team play Charlestown at Waratah commencing at 9.30am. THE GOLF SHOP For those who may have missed last week s newsletter, below are details of the survey being run by the Golf Shop. As we are getting closer to moving into the new clubhouse and Golf Shop, we want to make sure that we stock the shop with products that appeal to our members be it by brand, by price, by style or whatever it is that influences you in your purchase of golfing equipment. We all hate surveys but it would be invaluable to the staff in the Golf Shop if you could complete the survey attached to the newsletter. The more responses we get the better we will be able to tailor our stocking policy to your needs. The survey is intended to be completely anonymous so just drop your completed form into box outside the Golf Shop at a time convenient to you or if it suits you return by to golfshop@shortland waters.com.au Retailing of golfing products is very competitive and we want to be able to offer you prices that compete in the market place. The best way we can do this is to purchase stock in volumes and frequencies that turn them over quickly. We can only do this if we stock the products you like to purchase for your use. We want to provide the products you prefer and would be delighted to see as many survey forms as possible returned by Friday 29th September. We have extended the closing date by a few to ensure everybody has an opportunity to participate in the survey. LADY GOLFERS Further to the note above regarding Lady Golfers being welcome on Invitation Day, it is appropriate to note that Male and Female golfers are welcome on our course at any time. Every time sheet is an Open timesheet with respect to gender. Keep in mind that not every competition event is open meaning visiting men and women are not eligible to win the competition of the day. Also some member categories are not eligible for certain events i.e. Men s or Ladies Championship events for example. The current timesheet templates are not set up to accommodate mixed event types which prevents ladies entering their name in a timesheet spot on the computer. But they can contact the Golf Shop to do this. Once we are settled in the new clubhouse this issue can be addressed. Eligible golfers are able to place their name on the time sheet at any nominated tee time and pay the appropriate green fees relative to their membership. This can be as a group of males, a group of females or a mixed group. We are seeing more frequent requests for lady golfers to play on Saturday and, in some cases, play in the same group as their husband or partner.

6 This is something different but we need to embrace the change. Just think, how would you feel if your wife, daughter, mother or sister was denied an opportunity to participate in something or improve themselves simply because they are female? You may find the article in the link below worth reading as well. MATCH COMMITTEE NEW 2 nd Hole BEING PLAYED AS 10 th Hole. As the terrain obscures the line of entry into the water hazards and to save time - a player having to return to the tee & play another shot - the Match Committee has created the following Local Rule. If the ball is in or it is known or virtually certain that a ball that has not been found is in the water hazard the player has two options only: 1) If the ball is found in the water hazard the player may play the ball as it lies. 2) Under penalty of one stroke drop a ball in the appropriate drop zone as detailed below. 2.a) Irrigation dam (left of green) - Drop Zone located short of the bunker. 2.b) Main dam - Drop Zone located behind the green. If a ball is flighted to the left of the green or appears to bounce from the left side, Drop Zone is 2.a If a ball is flighted such that it may land on the green and continue over the back or may have been struck long, Drop Zone is 2.b The roadway behind the green is part of the hazard, if the ball is found, the player can select Option 1 or 2.b Note: This local rule pertains to water hazards only... NOT the situation where a ball has clearly been lost elsewhere outside the water hazards. i.e. lost among trees etc.
