1 May June 2015 r WELCOME TO THE VINOY CLUB Member Avery Lazzara attended the Miami Open to do the coin toss for the #1 player in the world, Serena Williams versus Sabine Lisicki! How cool is that?! General Manager, Barbara Readey had the pleasure of meeting Founding Vinoy Club Member, Fred Guest back in February. Read all about Fred Guest and his history with the Vinoy on page 2! Sheila LeFors repurposed old golf balls, spray painted, and hand decorated them to look like Easter Eggs! Great idea, very creative! Director of Tennis, Hans Gallauer, and member Jeff Winkler won the USTA Super Category II at St. Pete Country Club, by defeating the #2 ranked team in the nation in the Men s 55s Doubles. Congratulations on your big win! It was an All Hands-on- Deck night for a 600-person dinner. Will the real Executive Chef, please stand up? 2 From the Membership Director When you have a building with almost a century of intriguing stories, you can almost be certain there is an interesting yarn behind the founder s name. By now you ve probably heard the one about the pocket watch and the resort s namesake, Aymer Vinoy Laugher. What you probably don t know is you might not even have heard that story if it weren t for Fred. Who is Fred you ask? He is the man responsible for the resurgence of what we have come to know and love today as the Renaissance Vinoy. Fred Guest is a New York developer with family roots that Lance Moyer included such distinguished names as Woolworth and Churchill, so it comes as no surprise that after taking interest in the Vinoy more than 2 decades ago, he would be at the forefront of progress in downtown St. Petersburg. Fred has said that developers such as himself have a vision of what will be, but they don t always get to see it in their lifetime. Fred, a Vinoy club member himself, has watched the Vinoy and the surrounding area transform from a virtual ghost town to a vibrant community that is the envy of many. Tracing back to its roots, the Vinoy Park Hotel opened on New Year s Eve in A spectacular grande dame on the shores of Tampa Bay, The Vinoy had a storied run entertaining wealthy families and dignitaries during the Jazz Age, serving as a military training center in WWII, and hosting celebrities in its mid-century reappearance. After sadly shutting her doors in 1974, The Vinoy sat in slow decline for 18 years. Securing a spot on the National Historic Register and saving The Vinoy from the dreaded wrecking ball, local supporters did what they could and then held their breath. A true optimist, Fred saw what most developers could not in a dilapidated old hotel in the late 1980s. What appeared an eyesore beyond repair to most, Fred saw as an opportunity for the rebirth of a legendary icon and rallied his troops to commit $93 million dollars to restore not only the hotel, but future investors faith in Downtown St. Petersburg s potential. Fred paved the way for new development in the area, making his vision for a spectacular hotel at the heart of a vibrant city a reality. When The Vinoy had its grand re-opening in 1992, it included a fine dining steakhouse, named appropriately enough, Fred s Steakhouse. The polo club décor and memorabilia from the Guest family collection was a nod to Fred s creative concept of integrating club memberships into the resort. Fred s Steakhouse has been a respected, fine-dining experience ever since, serving indulgent dishes to resort guests and club members. Just as Fred sought to reinvent downtown, The Vinoy is staying true to Fred s vision and reinventing his namesake restaurant to tie together all Fred achieved with the storied history of the building. What better way is there to celebrate our 90th anniversary than by paying homage to our illustrious past and reviving a staple of those early days a speakeasy. Spiked with unique craft cocktails, local draught beer and small batch liquors, the new speakeasy will also serve up tasty snacks, small plates and shareable entrées. With live entertainment and innovative Pop-Up restaurants on select nights, Fred promises you ll have a rip-roaring good time. 1. Given Fred s uncanny vision, we re betting he s right. 2.. And like the story of the pocket watch and what it meant to the Vinoy s beginnings, that s a promise that will also undoubtedly add to the already storied history of this magnificent resort. 3. And like the wager surrounding the pocket watch, we re betting Fred is absolutely right. 10 Tennis Bulletin Board Fitness Tips with Sheen Don t get caught flatfooted When I walk the courts I see that many of our club players are hitting off balance or in an awkward position. This is commonly due to lack of footwork, or even worse, being caught flatfooted. What if I told you there s a way you can limit this from happening? This is a very common problem amongst players. Most tennis players can become too comfortable or sometimes overconfident in their ball striking. When this happens, they often hit balls that are within reach, rather than being in position. Incorporating speed and agility into your off court workout routine will make a noticeable difference. Focus on quick burst movements, keep your feet close together and underneath you. Jumping rope is a great way to improve footwork and can even be added to your pre-match warm up. Running in place with varying speeds, from a jog to a sprint, is another way to improve your footwork and speed, and requires very little space. Side to side movements with different speeds such as shuffling, and crossovers will help your lateral agility as well. Give these basic exercises a try and reap the benefits with success on the court! Summer Tennis Camp Camp runs from June 1 - August 13 Hours are 9:00 am - 2:00 pm Mon. - Thurs. For more Details and to sign up, please contact the Tennis Center. Body Language Hans Gallauer Director of Tennis Body language is not only visible by your opponents but also by your partner. How many times during a match were you frustrated by the current score of the game, or by your level of play, and displayed it with negative body language? Keep in mind especially during doubles, even the time you are frustrated at a dead ball (the first serve that hits the net and rolls back to you the vollier) and you smash it into the net with aggression. You may not have meant this, but now your partner took that as you being upset with them for missing the serve. Or, when you drop your head or shoulders and or your racket drops down to the side of your legs; again, showing dismay possibly with yourself but your partner thinks that it is directed at them. Positive attitude is EVERYTHING. Take it from the #1 Doubles team in the world: the Bryan Brothers. I have seen one double falt and yet his brother runs back to high five to keep the positive vibe going. Watch and learn from others. When not playing, take a moment and watch the players and how they react and see if you would take that in the context it was delivered and how would it make you feel. Tennis is tough enough with the tiny court, the really high nets, intense sun, strong winds, new rackets, new shoes, running late from work, and oh yes, lets not forget that pesky opponent. So with all that piling on, don t add yourself to your partner s list. Remember ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING IN EVERYTHING.
