1 J ANUARY Taberna Way! New Bern, NC 28562! ! FROM THE GOLF COURSE Mother Nature poured over 80 inches of rain on our area in 2018, and she shows no sign of slowing down. Due to saturated course conditions, the crew has had to re-prioritize some winter projects that were weather dependent because they require heavy equipment on the course. Another unforeseen challenge is the lack of response or availability of contractors who pour cement, for example. We have been told by contractors that they are not even taking new customers or providing quotes until April. The cart path repairs are going to have to wait; we will still try to address the bridges-to-cart-path transitions without any outside help, e.g., the bridge on 13. Bunker drainage repairs are our major priority on the course at this time. While some of the crew continues to address debris, pruning, edging, trimming, etc., the remainder have been tackling bunkers on 4, 6, 8, 9, 12, 13, 16 and 18. Each drain s pipes are addressed, uncovering sometimes up to inches of compacted sand (see picture) for each drainage pipe. After the bunkers with poor drainage are addressed, the greenside bunkers are next. These need to be repeatedly turned over for the compacted, saturated sand to dry out. The course bathrooms are undergoing a minor facelift, which started already with pressure washing the exterior of the buildings. A deep clean and fresh coat of paint on the interiors, as well as a fresh coat of paint on the exterior pillars, is forthcoming. This is one of the three trenches that had to be dug in one of the bunkers on Hole 12. Note the amount of sand that is compacted in the bunker from all of the moisture 2018 brought us. 4 NEWS FROM THE GOLF LEAGUES As we begin the new year, I want to thank all of our members for their most generous Christmas gifts to our Taberna staff. All of the recipients were extremely pleased. Since it is the beginning of a new year, it is also time to collect dues again. Our annual dues will remain the same, $ Please make your checks payable to the TMGA and give them to any TMGA officer, Brian Binn, Terry Smith, Hugo Gemignnani or myself. The official start of our 2019 season will be the first Wednesday in March and perhaps, as we enter into 2019 and we resolve to eat better and take better care of ourselves, we might consider some other NEW YEAR S RESOLUTIONS: 1) Let us resolve to sign up for each Wednesday event as early as possible. 2) Let us resolve to check in on Wednesdays at least 30 minutes before our assigned tee time. 3) Let us resolve to have the correct TMGA Mel Walczak change for the event ($5 for the event and $5 for the skins game). 4) Let us resolve to fill in all our divots on the practice range. 5) Let us resolve to fill in our divots in the fairways. 6) Let us resolve to fix all our ball marks on the green. 7) Let us resolve to obey all cart rules, cart path only and/or 90 degrees. 8) Let us resolve to obey all handicap cart rules. 9) Let us resolve that we and our guests will dress appropriately for each golf outing. 10) Let us resolve to be friendly and courteous to all our Taberna staff. Finally, and this is most important, let us resolve to have fun and enjoy each other s company every time we set foot on the golf course. HAPPY NEW YEAR!! TWGA Nine-Holers Regina Gemignani The TWGA nine hole group wishes all our members a safe and healthy New Year. Hopefully 2019 will bring us a lot more sunshine and a bit less rain. Sign up sheets are available in the ladies locker room and cost to join our league remains the same at $25. Submitting your check and contact info by February 1st will ensure your inclusion in the new directory. We do have some slots to fill for the new season so please be thinking about volunteering. Positions that are open include a new member welcome rep, a cheer person, and two or three ladies to organize and host our spring get together. Peggy Mac- Saveny and I will continue as coleaders and designers of special games. Watch for more detailed information as we get closer to the opening of the season. TWGA 18-Holers Julie Jones Last month, to start off the holiday season, we all enjoyed our annual TWGA Christmas Awards Dinner. The TWGA collected $429. for the Salvation Army s Empty Stocking Fund for needy childen and families. Thanks so much, everyone, for your generosity in giving to the fund. The year s seemingly loooongest month is here... January! After the busy hustle of the Christmas holidays, we now take time to regroup and look forward to a new year and a new golf season. At our house, we don t take down the tree and trimmings until January 6th, so I must admit I m still in the rest and recovery stage of early January. We have played golf so infrequently in the past weeks (no, past several months!) that it s difficult to wrap our minds around thoughts of sunny days and balmy breezes, sitting out on the club s deck chatting and laughing after a round of golf... Yet, Golf Season 2019 will arrive in March, not so very long a time from now. Please remember to fill out your membership form for the TWGA and send a check to Theresa Mueller by February 1st. So, read some good books, clean out closets and drawers, try some new recipes, stay cozy and the time will fly until we re back out on the course. Later... Cindy Teasdale had her first Hole-in-One on Hole #10 on December 17, while playing a Par Three course (from 150 yards)! Oh, what fun! Congratulations, Cindy!

5 On Tuesday, December 18, Bo Wernersbach aced Hole #8 for a Holein-One! Good for you, Bo! Congratulations! Wednesday, December 19, was a lucky day for Bruce Gemill when he had a Hole-in-One on Hole #8! Terrific, Bruce, way to go! CONGRATULATIONS! Missed this one in October On Tuesday, October 23, 2018 Perry Caswell scored a Hole-in-One on Hole #8! How sweet it is! Congratulations! Shannon On New Year s Eve, Taberna s dining room was aglow with gold and black twinkling and sparkling decor and soft lighting. Chef Mike and Chef Tom and all the dining room staff presided over treatladen tables of jumbo shrimp, oysters, wonderful beef tenderloin, a pasta station, chocolate fountain... yum! We danced to the dj s music and enjoyed a lovely ending to 2018 May the year ahead be kind to all of us... ninin
