Twelve teams, including three previous team champions will square, off vying for both team and individual titles as Western Carolina and the Catamount women s golf team play host to the 15th-annual Great Smokies Intercollegiate Sept All told, 67 women s golfers are slated to vie for the tournament championship. The two-round, Monday through Tuesday event which began back in 1999 will again be held at the par 72, 5,932-yard Waynesville Inn Golf Resort in Spa in The 2013 Great Smokies Intercollegiate consists of three days of golf beginning on Sunday, Sept. 16 with practice rounds that start at 11:30 am by set team tee times. The 36-hole tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 9:00 am on Monday, Sept. 16, with the final round also teeing off with a shotgun start at 9:00 am on Tuesday, Sept. 17. Hosting the Great Smokies Intercollegiate for a 15th-straight year as a program is a milestone for WCU women s golf. This is an on-going tradition which dates back to 1999 and is one many teams circle on their calendars, said WCU head coach Mallory Hetzel, who guided the Catamounts to the program s 10th top-two finish a season ago. This year s 12-team field will make for great competition both for the individual and team championship. I know Taylor (Allison) is anxious to defend her title from a season ago. The Waynesville Inn - Golf Resort and Spa was established in 1926, nestled on the hills and valleys of Western North Carolina. The 27-hole course sits on a former dairy farm and features rolling fairways ending in bent grass greens. The course was designed by renowned golf course designer, Donald Ross, who also designed Pinehurst #2 which hosted the 2005 U.S. Open. Golf Digest gave the Waynesville Inn Golf Resort and Spa a four-star rating. Teams will once again play the Carolina and Blue Ridge courses with the yardages playing out the same as a year ago. The Carolina course will play 2,979 yards while Blue Ridge, which features three par-3 and three par 5 holes, measures out to 2,953 yards to make up the 5,932-yard course. The staff at the Waynesville Inn - Golf Resort and Spa do an amazing job in every facet of helping us host this first-class event. From the condition of the course, to the rooms and meals all provided there on-site, the Great Smokies Intercollegiate continues to rank among the top women s tournaments and experiences. You can t beat the view from the course this time of year, added Hetzel. Western Carolina has won seven of the 14 previous team titles all-time, including two-straight after tying Southern Conference foe, Elon, in the rainshortened four years ago, and edging conference counterpart, Wofford, by five strokes in All told, WCU has won seven of the last 11 tournament team titles while also having claimed individual medalist honors seven times. In addition to WCU, two other past tournament champions are in this year s field including defending champion, Eastern Kentucky and Tennessee Tech, who won in 1999 and 2000 respectively. Those three will be joined by nine other schools making return trips to the mountains of Western North Carolina in this year s field. Looking back at the 2012 Great Smokies Intercollegiate, seven of the top 10 teams from the final finishing order return to the field in 2012 WCU, EKU, Presbyterian, Samford, Tennessee Tech, UAB and Western Kentucky. Last season, led by freshman individual medalist Taylor Allison, WCU finished in the runner-up spot as the 36-hole event was condense to one day of competition due to inclement weather. It was the 10th time in the 14 previous events that WCU had placed among the top two finishers, and the secondstraight season a Catamount rookie had secured medalist honors with Allison joining 2011 champion, Sofie Kvarnstrom. Morehead State carded consecutive rounds of even-par 288 and one-under par, 287, to win the rain-shortened 14th Annual Great Smokies Intercollegiate Monday at the par-72, 5,932-yard Waynesville Inn, Golf Resort and Spa. The Eagles posted a tournament-record score of one-under, 575. Tournament host, Western Carolina, finished as the runner-up in the team standings, seven strokes in arrears after shooting 582. With its second-place finish on Monday, WCU has finished in the top two spots in 10 of the 14 Great Smokies Intercollegiate events all-time. Morehead State became the seventh different team to win the tournament, while also marking the third different winner in the past three years. The top two finishing teams were paced by co-individual medalists as Morehead State s Linnea Scholin and WCU freshman Taylor Allison shared the top of the leader board at the end of the day. Scholin posted rounds of 73 and a tournamentlow, 67, while Allison shot even-par, 72, and 68 to both finish at four-under, 140. Allison paced the tournament field with 10 birdies on Monday. Following Morehead State and WCU in the team standings, Samford just edged fellow Southern Conference member, Elon, by two strokes, 584-to-586. Western Kentucky rounded out the top five, 10 strokes behind the Phoenix at 596. The tournament went the scheduled 36 holes, but was shortened from a two day to a one day event by tournament officials late Monday afternoon after threatening weather forecasts remained pessimistic. Teams completed their opening 18 holes and went straight into the second round, finishing the final holes just as torrential downpours moved into Western North Carolina. Despite the gray morning skies and the picturesque fog that hung around the aptly named mountains in Western North Carolina, Monday s opening round had a bit brighter of an appearance. Most all of the 83 women s golfers representing 16 different schools were wearing pink shirts, skirts and ribbons in a show of support for breast cancer awareness TOURNAMENT RECAP: WAYNESVILLE, N.C. - Eastern Kentucky used a previous tournament-record tying final round on Tuesday to match the tournament s 36-hole scoring benchmark, overtaking first-round leading Western Carolina to claim the 13th Annual Great Smokies Intercollegiate by four strokes at the par-72, 5,932-yard Waynesville Inn, Golf Resort and Spa. Western Carolina s Sofie Kvarnstrom took home individual medalist honors by three-strokes over the first round leader, Univ. of Louisiana-Monroe freshman Jennifer Park. EKU s final round of four-under par, 284, matched the event s top team singleround held by Western Carolina from the first round of the 2008 event. The 36-hole score of 576 equaled the performance of the 2005 Catamounts which took home team championship honors. With the victory for Kvarnstrom, she joins current WCU teammate Blaire Minter as Catamount women s golfers to claim individual medalist honors in their firstever collegiate event. Minter took home top honors at her first event at the Draper Valley Intercollegiate back in the fall of EKU (576) and WCU (580) were followed by UNC Greensboro and Gardner- Webb, both tied for third at 583 with Rollins College rounding out the top five at 586. UNCG trimmed five strokes off its opening round to advance into the top five, while the Runnin Bulldogs were 19 shots better on Tuesday to climb from ninth to the top five, thanks in part to a tournament-best 34 birdies. Gardner-Webb posted a tournament-record low round of 282 on Tuesday. Kvarnstrom s two-day total of 135 is the second-best in tournament history, just one stroke in arrears of Hovda s stellar 134 turned in back in GREAT SMOKIES INTERCOLLEGIATE Waynesville Inn, Golf Resort & Spa Sept , 2011 TEAM (after first round) Rd1 Rd2 TOTAL 1. Due to the shortened tournament, there were was also a four-way tie for the individual champion. Western Carolina s Malin Jansson and Tiffany Schisler, who was playing as an individual, tied with Elon s Tara McFadden and William & Mary s Caroline Sweet, each shooting a 69, for the top honors. For Jansson and Schisler, the individual medalist honors marked the first of their respective careers. Western Carolina rode its record-setting opening round on Monday (284) to cruise to the 2008 Cullowhee Café Great Smokies Women s Intercollegiate team championship Tuesday afternoon by five strokes despite a hard charge from fellow conference member, Wofford. First-round, co-leader, Lorie Warren of Belmont duplicated her opening round three-under, 69, despite varying conditions to claim individual medalist honors by a stroke over Wofford s Sarah Hurt. The golfers were greeted with significantly cooler temperatures and sporadic rain sprinkles on Tuesday morning. However, the weather held the majority of the day despite overcast skies to allow the completion of the tournament without delay. WCU placed three golfers inside the top 10 finishers to claim its sixth tournament title all-time, and it s first since The 36-hole total of 578 also ranked as the second-lowest round in tournament history, two strokes off the all-time record of 576 shot in 2005 en route to the title. All told, the Catamounts have won the Great Smokies Intercollegiate in six of the past seven years. WCU (578) and Wofford (583) were followed by two-time champion, Tennessee Tech in third at 586. SoCon newcomer, Samford, was fourth two strokes back at 588 with Winthrop (589) rounding out the top five team finishers. Wofford s Sarah Hurt finished second, one-stroke in arrears at 139, followed by Tennessee Tech s Diana Carson (141) in third and a three-way tie between WCU s Blaire Minter and Elin Mickelsson, and Samford s Katelyn Stanier for fourth at TOURNAMENT RECAP: WAYNESVILLE, N.C. Southern Conference-member Chattanooga rallied from its fourth-place standing after Saturday s opening round, making up five strokes to win the ninth-annual Great Smokies Intercollegiate at the 5,920-yard Waynesville Country Club. First-round individual leader, South Alabama s Elin Andersson, held on to claim the individual championship with a two-day total of 141. Using the 10-under par performance of senior Ashley Hovda, the Western Carolina Catamount women s golf team fired a 290 on Sunday to edge hard-charging East Tennessee State and Ohio University to win the seventh annual Wachovia-Great Smokies Intercollegiate at the par 72, 5,828-yard. Hovda won individual medalist honors for the second-consecutive year at the event as the Catamounts claimed their fourth-straight team title and fifthstraight individual crown at the annual tournament. Behind Western, East Tennessee State and Ohio University tied for second with identical 581 scores on Sunday. The Buccaneers shaved seven-strokes off their opening round 294 to move from fifth to the runner-up spot on the final day, tied with the Bobcats who dropped one spot after standing tied for the lead Saturday. Xavier, who finished third each of the past two seasons, placed fourth, followed by the Univ. of South Alabama in fifth, Elon, Mercer, Western Kentucky, and Belmont through nine, and High Point and Wofford tying for tenth, overall. Individually, Hovda tied the lowest single round in tournament history Sunday with a 66, which was her collegiate career low. Her round tied runner-up, Julie Tomlinson of Ohio, and classmate Brandy Andersen s opening round in 2002 as the lowest 18-hole score in Great Smokies tournament history. Tomlinson shot one-over, 73, in the final round to slip into second, five-under for the 36- hole tournament. Shauna McVeigh of Troy Univ., Stephanie Hicks of Longwood, and Ashley Barton of East Tennessee State rounded out the top five finishers TOURNAMENT RECAP: WAYNESVILLE, N.C. Western Carolina made up three strokes on first-round leading East Tennessee State over the final 18 holes, rallying from second-place to win its fifth-consecutive Wachovia - Great Smokies Intercollegiate by one stroke at the par 72, 5,915-yard. Austin Peay State s Staci Lynch carded a two-round 140 to break the Catamounts string of five-straight individual winners by taking the medalist honors on the weekend. Western Carolina shot 294 on Sunday for a two-round score of 586. East Tennessee State shot 298 over the final round to stand as the tournament runnerup for the second-straight season. Winthrop moved up one spot from its first round position to place third (595), followed by South Alabama (596) in fourth and a fourway tie for fifth including Xavier, Elon, Belmont, and Marshall all finishing at 606. Lynch, who entered Sunday tied for first after an opening 71, carded the second-lowest round of the tournament, 69, to win by two strokes over Charleston Southern s Olivia Higgins, who shot 68 on Sunday to post the lowest round over the 36-hole tournament. Higgins also led all 119 players with 11 birdies, followed by nine by Lynch. Western Carolina freshman Desiree Karlsson recorded her best-ever collegiate finish in third with a two round 143. Yet, it was her heroics on the 18th hole - her 17th with the shot gun start - that helped WCU to the team title. After shooting long on her second shot, Karlsson chipped in for eagle from 22 yards out to move to one-under for the day. She would par the final hole (number one Carolina) to post her first-ever below-par score of 71. Western Carolina had four individuals finish in the top five of the 24-team field to rally from six strokes down to win the Wachovia- Great Smokies Intercollegiate for the second-consecutive year. Lady Catamount sophomore Brandy Andersen claimed the medalist honors, edging Xavier s Emily Shoplik by one stroke. Andersen carded a 71 and 74 for a two-round total of 145. The individual race tightened in the final round as just five strokes separated first and eighth place. Following Andersen and Shoplik was Murray State s Lee-Anne Pace who finished third with a 147, just two strokes out of the lead. Finishing fourth were WCU s Becca Twiner, Bianca Melone, and Ashley Hovda was Austin Peay s Lynn Mantooth and in eighth with a 150 was Wofford s Laura Robinson. The top seven individuals, including the four players tied for fourth, were named to the all-tournament team at the conclusion of the event TOURNAMENT RECAP: WAYNESVILLE, N.C. Despite every effort to regain the course, the sixth annual Wachovia-Great Smokies Intercollegiate was suspended due to weather, leaving first-round leading Western Carolina as the 2004 team champion. The Catamounts fired an all-time school and tournament record 291 in the opening round to claim the team title for the third-consecutive year. The start of the second round was delayed half an hour to 10:00 am because of rain on an already damp course. The trio of hurricanes that pounded Western North Carolina during September and October caused severe flooding in the Waynesville and Canton areas and raised the water table. Periods of rain on Monday evening through Tuesday morning made the course unplayable. Western Carolina junior Ashley Hovda, the leader after the first round with the second-best tournament single-round score of 67, was declared the tournament individual champion. It marks the fourth-consecutive year that a Catamount golfer has medalled in the event. Hovda s teammate Bianca Melone joined Murray State s Santie Koch and Xavier s Tatia Jreige as tournament runners-up, each shooting even par on Monday. Rounding out the all-tournament team were Maria Ringdahl and Ashley Barton, both from East Tennessee State, Stephanie Hicks from Longwood University, Morgan Olds from Elon, and Sarah Sparks from Xavier. asdfasdf 2003 WACHOVIA GREAT SMOKIES INTERCOLLEGIATE Oct , 2003 TEAM (after first round)...
