With an expanded 54-hole tournament format, Western Carolina is set to host the Hummingbird Intercollegiate Nov. 2-5 at the par- 71, 6,767-yard Country Club of Sapphire Valley. Teams will again play one of the region s most pristine courses during the special time of year that has the mountainous terrain painted with the hues of autumn. The 2013 installment of the event gets underway with a practice round on Saturday, Nov. 2 with the three, 18-hole rounds slated for Sunday, Nov. 3 through Tuesday, Nov. 5. The event is open to the public with free admission. Fans can follow all of the action from the 2013 Hummingbird Intercollegiate with live scoring through Western Carolina wraps up the fall portion of its schedule by hosting the 54-hole stroke play event, welcoming nine other teams to the resort town for the four-day event. It is the seventh-consecutive year and eighth time overall that WCU and the Country Club of Sapphire Valley have hosted this intercollegiate golf tournament the first at its current duration. We are very pleased to once again host the Hummingbird Intercollegiate in nearby Cashiers, said WCU first-year head coach, Bryant Odom. The Country Club of Sapphire Valley provides so much more than just a pristine golf course for our program to use throughout the season. The club s membership, golf staff and overall hospitality have added immeasurable value to the program and the Hummingbird Intercollegiate for several years. This is a great opportunity for us to play a national field while showcasing this special place we call home. The Country Club of Sapphire Valley is a private, member-owned club that features a valley golf course, plush clubhouse, state-of-the-art fitness center and tennis center. The course, which plays at par-71 and 6,767 yards, meanders through the backdrop of a mature hardwood forest and scenic mountains that provide for breath taking views and a natural setting. The course, which sits on a level valley floor despite its mountainous surroundings, was originally designed by George Cobb and was updated by Bill Bergin. The peaks of the southern Appalachian Mountains and the fall foliage colors provide a magnificent setting for the final team tournament of the season for the Catamount men s golf team. Groups will tee off on both the front and back nines with front nine tee times beginning at 9:30 am and the back nine starting at 9:35 am, both with 10-minute intervals. Five players will compete for each team with the best scores of the top four counting each day. The field also includes a combined six unattached individuals vying for medalist honors. Western Carolina will tee off on the front nine beginning at 10:20 am on Sunday, Nov. 3. A combined 10 schools and six individual players representing seven different states will comprise the 56-golfer field, all vying for both the team and individual titles at the 2013 Hummingbird Intercollegiate. In addition to the host Catamounts, two additional previous tournament champions are in this year s field including the defending team title holder, Samford, and 2011 champion, Appalachian State. The Mountaineers carded a tournament-record low team round of 273 to claim the 2011 crown by two strokes over second-place, UAB, while Samford defeated tournament-host, WCU, and Belmont in last year s tournament. Wofford marks a third Southern Conference school returning to the southern mountains of Western North Carolina. Other teams include Belmont, Colgate, Gardner-Webb, and Tennessee Tech with first-year competitors, Univ. of Evansville and Cardinal Stritch, a NAIA-member out of Milwaukee, Wisc., rounding out the field. Eight of the teams attending this year s tournament are ranked inside the national top 200 including Wofford which ranks a tourney-high, 110th, and Belmont in at 118th. Seven of the top 13 individual finishers from the 2012 event are eligible to return to the Country Club of Sapphire Valley including tournament runner-up, HUMMINGBIRDINTERCOLLEGIATE PAGE 1 COUNTRY CLUB OF SAPPHIRE VALLEY

2 redshirt senior Daley Byles from Gardner-Webb. WCU s Tyler Lail, Zac Hughes of Samford and Belmont s Ashton Van Horne finished tied for fourth a year ago after carding even-par scores of 142, four strokes off the pace. Western Carolina first hosted an event at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley in 2004 as Charleston Southern carded a six-under, 570, to win the WCU Intercollegiate. The Catamounts returned to the CCSV in 2007 for the first Hummingbird Intercollegiate. Battling blustery conditions, Western Carolina built upon its five-stroke opening round edge over Vanderbilt to cruise to the team title by a combined 17 strokes. Vanderbilt was again in contention for the team title in 2008, nearly rallying past first-round leader Central Florida on the final day. However, the Golden Knights staved off the Commodores over the final three holes as UCF claimed team honors by a stroke despite Vandy s tournament single-round low of 275 over the final 18 holes. SoCon foe, Furman, erased a six stroke deficit over the final six holes to rally past Kentucky to win the 2009 Hummingbird Intercollegiate, with Jacksonville becoming the sixth-different team to claim championship honors in the six-year involvement with WCU and the Country Club of Sapphire Valley. Three seasons ago, Jacksonville carded the third-lowest, 36-hole team score in tournament history to rally from third place to win the event. The Dolphins carded a two-day, two-round score of 563 to defeat third-time runner-up, Vanderbilt, by six strokes. Then in 2011, the Mountaineers set the standard for the event with their three-under par, 273, in the final round to win the team championship. Paced by the event s individual medalist, senior Casey O Toole, Samford led wire-to-wire to win the 2012 Hummingbird Intercollegiate. The Bulldogs placed three golfers inside the final top 10 finishers, cruising to a 12-stroke victory with a two-day total of 570. It was the second-straight year and the fourth-time in tournament history that a team from the Southern Conference has won the team championship when combined with ASU s 2011 title. The host Catamounts rallied from sixth place after Saturday s opening round by carding the lowest team round on Sunday, finishing tied for the runner-up spot with Belmont at 582. WCU trimmed 14 strokes off its opening round to make its run to near the top of the leader board while the Bruins were 10-strokes off their opening round 286, shooting 296 in the final round. Western Carolina has twice had the top finisher with Andres Cuenca ( ) winning individual medalist honors in 2007, guiding the squad to its lone team championship, and Keith Tyburski ( ) finishing as one of the top golfers only to fall on the second playoff hole back in Tyburski, currently the head coach at Colgate, brings his squad to Western North Carolina for the third-time since taking over the reins of the Raiders men s golf program during the summer of WCU is coming off a 10th place showing as a team at The Invitational at the Ocean Course last week and boasts the nation s top-ranked golfer according to GolfStat with junior J.T. Poston. All nine eligible golfers on Western Carolina s roster will see action at this year s Hummingbird Intercollegiate five on the scoring side and four unattached as individuals. Poston has led the Catamounts in all four seasonal events entering the Hummingbird Intercollegiate including scoring his first two individual medalist honors in back-to-back weeks to open the fall. The Hickory, N.C., native took top honors at both the Golfweek Program Challenge in Myrtle Beach, S.C, before following it up by winning the Cardinal Intercollegiate in Kentucky. He has a seasonal stroke average of 69.17, currently the best in the SoCon through 12 rounds and atop WCU s all-time single-season scoring ledger. Lail, as mentioned, finished a career-best tied for fourth in last year s Hummingbird Intercollegiate. Of the remaining seven golfers on the Catamount roster, four have tournament experience at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley. Senior Greg Bunner is averaging through three previous tournaments in Sapphire, while classmate Jack Walsh has averaged through six rounds in his first three tourney appearances including a career-best finish of tied for sixth as a freshman in Senior Collin Witiak has played in the Hummingbird Intercollegiate twice before, averaging per round while Matthew Turner has carded consecutive tournament scores of 157 in his first two appearances. Three members of the roster are making their first tournament appearance at the Hummingbird Intercollegiate including redshirt sophomore Alex Simmons, as well as freshmen Nont Panayanggool and Evan Smith. Furman erased a six-stroke lead over the final six holes to rally past Kentucky to win the 2009 Hummingbird Intercollegiate on Tuesday afternoon at the par-71, 6,767-yard Country Club of Sapphire Valley. First-round leader Garland Ferrell helped lead the Paladin charge, carding three birdies on the back nine and eagled the par-5, 482-yard 14th hole for a secondconsecutive day to win the individual medalist honors. Ferrell carded rounds of 67 and 68 for a two-day total of 135 to win by two strokes over Akron s Lucas Murray at 137. David Watkins of East Carolina finished third at 138. Furman finished with a 285 on Tuesday for a 36-hole score of 567 to edge Kentucky (570) by three strokes. The Wildcats slipped into a two-way tie with East Carolina after the Pirates turned in a closing round 280. Chattanooga, ranked 30th in the nation according to GolfStat, was the biggest gainer over the final 18, moving from 18th-place to eighth overall by turning in a six-under, 278, the low round of this year s tournament. Vanderbilt posted a fourth-place finish with a two-day total of 573, followed by Winthrop (574) to round out the top five with the Catamounts and Zips tied for sixth, two strokes in arrears at 576. For Western Carolina, senior Ricky Stout carded a one-under 70 on Tuesday to finish tied with sophomore teammate, Kyle Wilson, at even-par, 142, in 14th place. Stout was consistent through the field on Tuesday, making the turn at even par after a pair of birdies countered two bogies. The New Bern, N.C., native carded two birdies on the back nine against one bogey to shoot one-under. Wilson rallied from a two bogies and a double on the front, turning at four-over to card three birdies on the back nine to shoot one-over, 72. Senior Drew Miller evened out his three bogies in the final round with a trio of birdies - two on par 4 and one on a par 5; but a double-bogey on the sixth hole of his day relegated him to a twoover, 73, and a final finish tied for 42nd. Classmate Tanner Briele made the turn at even par before dropping to three-under par after birdying three of his first five holes on the back nine. However, consecutive bogies and a costly nine on the par-4 17th moved him to four-over for the day and seven-over 149, tied for 54th overall. Rounding out WCU s scorers on Tuesday was freshman Trey White, who struggled home after posting a one-under 70 in the opening round with an 82 on the final 18, tied for 76th. Playing as individuals, Ronnie Garcia turned in his career-low round of 75 to finish tied with teammate Rylan Lanham in 94th with a two-round score of 156. Jonathan Davies carded 81 to finish tied for 71st at 151, followed by Benjy Davey in a tie for 87th overall at 154 (75-79). 9 Jacksonville Rallies to Win 2008 Hummingbird Intercollegiate; WCU Finishes 13th CASHIERS, N.C. Despite the heroics of Vanderbilt s Hudson Johnson on the tournament s final three holes, the University of Central Florida claimed the 2008 Hummingbird Intercollegiate team championship by a stroke (557-to-558) over the Commodores Tuesday evening at the par 71, 6,767-yard Country Club of Sapphire Valley. The Golden Knights two-stroke advantage after Monday s opening round held as Vanderbilt carded a tournament-low team round of 275 over the final 18 holes, establishing a single-round record. Vandy s round of 275 on Tuesday was three swings lower than the previous record of 278 shot by Western Carolina a season ago. Akron (578) finished third in the event, with Southern Conference foes Elon (584) and WCU (587) rounding out the top five. Other SoCon finishers included Wofford and Samford tied for ninth, Furman tied for 11th and Appalachian State in 14th. Johnson, who entered the day tied for second after an opening round 68 on Monday, shot eagle with a hole-in-one on the par 3, 187-yard 16th before shooting par on the 17th. He birdied the 460-yard par 5, 18th to card 65 and win the individual medalist honors with a two-day total of 133. He edged out UCF s David Johnson (134) by a stroke, with the duo going toe-to-toe in the day s final pairing. Brad Schneider of Central Florida finished third with rounds of 68 and 71 to conclude the event at three-under, 139, while teammate Simon Ward placed in a two-way tie for fourth with Vanderbilt s Tyler Matthews at two-under, 140, to round out the top five. Hudson Johnson s 65 was the lowest individual collegiate round ever carded at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley, one better than the 66 carded by WCU s Andres Cuenca and Dustin Furnari in last season s event. Also, Hudson s 133 and David Johnson s 134 both broke the year-old 36-hole tournament record of 135 held by Cuenca. Defending tournament champion, Cuenca, led the Catamounts with a two-day total of twoover, 144. The senior from Fuengirola, Spain, incurred a two-stroke penalty during Tuesday s round which dropped him from the top 10 finishing order into a 12-way tie for 12th place. Drew Miller chiseled two strokes off his opening round 74 to shoot a one-over, 72, on Tuesday, moving into a tie for 25th. Classmate Ricky Stout was consistent with consecutive rounds of 74 to shoot 148 and finished tied for 34th while also leading the tourney with 27 par scores. Catamount Men s Golf Wins 2007 WCU Intercollegiate CASHIERS, N.C. Battling blustery conditions including high temperatures in the mid-40s with wind gusts upwards of 20 mph, Western Carolina junior Andres Cuenca, who led from start to finish, claimed tournament individual medalist honors in leading the Catamounts to the team title at the WCU Intercollegiate, presented by Macon Bank. Western shot rounds of 278 and 287 to finish with a two-day team three-under, 565, at the par 71, 6,767-yard Country Club of Sapphire Valley. Vanderbilt, which entered the final day just five strokes in arrears of WCU in second, posted 299 over the final 18 holes to slip 12 strokes further back as the Catamounts finished 17-strokes ahead of the Commodores. Radford ( =587) finished third followed by High Point ( =594) with Southern Conference-member, Furman, making the largest gain on the day advancing seven spots from tied for 12th to finish fifth with a closing round 295. Including Cuenca, five individuals finished even par or better over the two-day event. Samford s Martin Bunt and WCU junior Dustin Furnari, who was tied with Cuenca for the top spot on Monday with an opening round 66, tied for the runner-up spot with identical three-under 139. Nick Little of Radford and Jon Curran of Vanderbilt tied for fourth at even-par, 142, to round out the top five finishers. A native of Fuengirola, Spain, Cuenca was the only player to post consecutive rounds in the 60s as the weather was a major factor in the second round scores. The junior finished with nine birdies helping the Catamounts pace the field with 34 overall. Furnari was tied with Cuenca for par 4 scoring, while also ranking eighth with eight birdies. The transfer carded a two-over 73 on Tuesday to post his best-ever finish as a Catamount. Senior Matt Cook bounced back from his two-over 73 on Monday to shoot even par, 71, in the second round after recovering from two-over at the turn. The Murphy, N.C., native posted his 23rd career top 10 finish placing in a two-way tie for ninth. Freshman Caleb Marsh finished tied for 17th while sophomore Ricky Stout was tied for 39th at the end of the 36-hole event. Rounding out Western Carolina s competitors in the 83-golfer field were Benjy Davey and Michael Chapin, both playing as individuals. Davey finished with a two-day score of 153, tied for 44th, while Chapin, who was in the top 10 after the first round, slipped into a tie for 66th at 157. Western Carolina junior Keith Tyburski followed his 68 on day one with a twounder par 70 on day two to card a 36-hole total of 138, the third-best, two-round total in school history. However, Radford s Aaron Summers had back-to-back rounds of 69 for a 138 as well and defeated Tyburski on the second hole of the playoff to win the individual title at the WCU Intercollegiate, played at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley. Round one leader, Charleston Southern, remained on top through 36 holes to win the team title with a six-under 570. Radford improved by eight strokes over its day one score to place second with a 576, while Western Carolina carded a two-day total of 580 to finish third. Western Carolina s 580 is the second-best, 36-hole score in school history. Tyburski looked to give the Catamounts their 10th individual champion all-time and second in back-to-back events, as sophomore Tripp Morrow won last week s Shoot-Out at Wild Wing. Blake Wray ended the event tied for 14th with a 147, followed by Matt Flueckiger (149, 20th-t), Tripp Morrow (150, 25th-t) and Chase Kress (153, 33rd). WCU senior Brian Hogan, playing as an individual, tied for 11th with a total of 146. Other Catamounts to participate as individuals included Matt Dowdy and William Forcier, each of whom carded a 149 to tie for 20th, Shawn Costello (157, 40th-t) and Alex Arrigo (162, 45th). The WCU Intercollegiate concludes the Catamounts fall schedule and marks the final event for retiring Catamount head golf coach Johnny Wike.
