I guess this is to be expected during this time of year. The weather is playing havoc with SGAA golf this year. Half of our tournaments were canceled due to bad weather. While this is unfortunate, just think of the money you ve saved by sitting at home and watching the clouds. Hopefully the weather will improve, and we can get back to a regular schedule. This weather is hard on the golf courses and limits our play. So, let s get out and play when we can, support SGAA, good fun, and the courses. We have a new location in our Out of Town schedule, Brasstown Valley Resort Aug 20-22, Past President Danny Huckaby Chaplain Jim Adams Table Captains Monday Jim Means Tuesday Danny Boyles Wednesday Keith Boehringer Thursday Jim Goldsack This is a new venue for SGAA and one I think we will enjoy. 2 Vice President Jim Goldsack (770) It is difficult to believe one quarter of the year has already passed. The month of April affords us to not only enjoy the Masters in Augusta, but, more importantly, partake in our first Out of Town Tournament at Li le Ocmulgee. Believe me, it is a worth while trip. I ll see you there. Four members, those who joined the SGAA in 2017, have not picked up their Bag Tags. If you do not play on Thursdays, give me a call and I will leave them with the table on the day you normally play. It has also come to my a en on some of you who joined in 2017 did not receive a Bag Tag. Please let me know your name, number and date of entry, and we will remedy the situa on. Hit em long straight and infrequently! Tom Duff s Memory Lives On Long time SGAA member Tom Duff passed away in June 2017; but his memory and legacy lives on. Coach Duff was a long-time golf coach for the Morgan County Bulldogs as well as an assistant football coach and was the MCHS Chaplain for many years. Tom enjoyed hosting the annual Morgan County High School Boys Golf Tournament. This year was the First Annual Tom Duff Classic High School Golf Tournament for the Georgia State Parks Junior Tour. The Tom Duff Classic was kicked off Thursday, March 22, 2018 at Hart County with the boys match with the girls match at the Georgia Club on the weekend followed by both boys and girls playing their Monday matches at the Providence Club in Loganville. 4 From the Editor Steve Puster SLOW PLAY SLOW PACE; IS THERE A DIFFERENCE?? I certainly believe the pace of play has a definite impact on slow play. That may sound like a silly statement, but they are two separate actions and they can impact one another. Consider the golfers who play ready golf; i.e. they don t stand on ceremony and they start thinking about the next shot as the approach their ball and it doesn t matter if they are away or not if they re ready to go and no one else in the group is ready they go ahead and take their shot. Normally, a group that plays ready golf doesn t play slow golf and hold up groups behind them they don t impact the pace of play. On the other hand, if each of the players in a group waits until they get to their ball to even think about the next shot, then takes four or five practice swings after standing over their ball trying to decide which club to play, and only play when they are the player away this is a group of slow players. The only way this group couldn t adversely impact the pace of play is if they are the last group on the course. We can all play ready golf if we want to do so, and still take a reasonable number of practice swings. But when the pace of play is slow from the beginning ready golfers tend to get out of rhythm and often never begin to drag around the course. The table hole assignment of groups can influence the pace of play. I m sure we ve all heard the questions of why the assignments don t start at Hole #1 and proceed through #18. That certainly would alleviate the bottleneck we encounter at times; but some of the courses require us to start the majority of our groups on the back nine in an attempt to let their regular patrons get on the course as soon as we all pass #1. Until recently the table hole assignments started on 18 A and then B and proceeded in descending order with two groups on every hole that wasn t a Par 3 until the back nine was fully covered. This created a bottleneck as the holes were assigned (two groups) in descending order, but we play the holes in ascending order which means the holes in front of you usually had two groups assigned to them which caused everyone to be bunched up at the beginning and thus dictating a slow pace of play. I say recently, because the Thursday table (seems like the only day Mother Nature was letting us play for a while) began assigning the A group to holes starting with #18 and descending to #10 and then assigning the B group starting with #10 and ascending. This spread the players out over the back nine more evenly and any bottleneck was behind the majority of players allowing for a better pace of play. It appears the Table is doing all it can to speed up the pace of play so now it is up to the golfers to pick up the pace so everyone can get into a rhythm and enjoy their round of golf.
