Saddlebrooke Men s Golf Association Jan 2016 News Flash For the second time in two years, the first golf outing of the year for the Saddlebrooke Men s Golf Association has been canceled by of all things, a snow storm. Clearly rumors of global warming is a myth. Southern Arizona is after all where retired people go to enjoy the warm dry weather particularly in the wintertime MESSAGE FROM Mark Klicker The SBRMGA President Members, Happy New Year! I hope you are all looking forward to another great year of participation in SBRMGA events. Resident play is continuing to increase as the community grows. I was especially pleased that the Robson staff is working to facilitate even more resident play by reducing the fee for annual memberships and offering a reduced price resident play card. The resident play card is a great value, especially for part-timers who want to participate in SBRMGA events on Thursday mornings. Something else to look forward to this year are changes coming to the golf course. The new pro-shop is going to open (but I'm not making a prediction). The new 2
Saddlebrooke Ranch Men s Golf Association Jan 2016 putting green will really look good in the spring. Most of you remember the old putting green - it didn't really reflect the greens on the course. The staff made some changes based in part on resident input, which brings me to the other changes to look forward to. There are capital improvements coming this year which include reworking the bunkers with liners and drains. And we can expect changes on the driving range as well. Finally, the course superintendent, Jeff Mitchell, has been allocated 12 trees for planting in the near term. More will be coming. As you play the course you can see where these are planned for (marked with orange paint). There are a number of other changes coming that will continue to make golf at SBR a great experience. I'm looking forward to seeing you all out there on Thursday mornings. MARK 3
Saddlebrooke Men s Golf Association Jan 2016 HOW TO HIT ON A HILL... BALL BELOW YOUR FEET If golf courses were perfectly flat the game would be much easier. We wouldn t have to worry about putts breaking, we wouldn t have to worry about elevation changes, and we wouldn t have to worry about those uncomfortable side hill lies. Unfortunately, most golf courses are riddled with hills and uneven terrain that makes this already difficult game seem downright impossible. One of the most challenging situations for many golfers is hitting a shot when they are on a hill with the ball below their feet. Luckily there s a simple trick you can use that will help you improve your accuracy on these tough shots and avoid a disaster. So what s the trick? It s simple just aim a little to left! 4
Saddlebrooke Ranch Men s Golf Association Jan 2016 The slope of the hill will cause the ball to take off to the right. After lining up to the left of the target just make sure that you take a smooth controlled swing. Don t try to crush it. Many golfers like to take an extra club when they find themselves on uneven lies. This allows them to swing at 75% and maintain control of their body and their balance throughout the shot. Pro Tip: When the ball is below your feet focus on maintaining your spine angle and your knee bend throughout your swing. Many golfers have a tendency to stand up on their back swing in these types of situations which makes it much more difficult for them to return the club to the ball and make solid contact. This tip is attributed to Change Up Golf. The link to Change support@changetha 5
Saddlebrooke Men s Golf Association Jan 2016 GOLF COURSE IMPROVEMENT By now most of you have spotted trees going in around the course. This is the beginning of some change activity that will be happening over a couple years. Here s what to expect especially with regard to the bunker work coming later this year. The course improvement committee has been meeting periodically with Mark Giannonotti from the Robson staff. In the fall the committee gave a list of things we d like to see around the course. Mark agreed with most of them, and some of them like the trees are already in progress. There should be 12 new trees in by the end of next week. And it looks like another 12 trees at the end of the year. There are other, smaller changes too, like rakes for bunkers, benches, ball washers and trash receptacles on the range, etc. One change under consideration for next year (2017) is a bridge across the first arroyo on #10. In December the committee toured the course with the course architect. He is currently working on a proposal to Robson that will include liners and drains for bunkers, re-shaping bunkers (18 on the left side of the fairway for example) and adjusting the direction of play slightly on a couple holes 9 more to the left and 11 more to the right. When the proposal is ready the committee will get a look it at. But it still has to go to the Robson corporate board for funding. It may all make the cut or we could see a line item veto. Regardless, I expect to see something happening by spring. When the bunkers are in work we can expect a hole-by-hole closure. Regarding restrooms at the turn we did solicit ideas from members (preferences actually) on what we thought would make good 6
Saddlebrooke Ranch Men s Golf Association Jan 2016 alternatives and forwarded them on. Still no decision as of this week. GOLF HUMOR For months the archaeologists had been toiling deep in the Amazon jungle, clearing creepers and rampant, choking undergrowth from faint traces of a Lost City. Their excitement mounted as the place s extraordinary purpose became evident. Broad winding avenues of giant flagstones had deep, narrow perfectly circular holes every few hundred yards. It had to be a golf course! Any doubt was dispelled by the discovery of sculptures and paintings of human figures using primitive prototypes of irons or putters. The next step was to interrogate local Indian tribesmen about traditions associated with the prehistoric golf club of the Lost City. And yes, it was soon learned that the tribes did have legends of the Old Ones who followed a daily ritual with clubs and balls, until routed by tragedy. While watching a particularly wrinkled, aged elder chattering to the interpreter, a Professor murmured wistfully, If only we knew why they gave up golf, making it vanish for centuries before rediscovery. The interpreter nodded eagerly and relayed the query. The elder, surprised, made a sweeping gesture at the jungle, and replied. Simple, was the translation, they could not afford the green fees.
