C O T E N T S The SCORECARD THE TEEING GROUND A P R I L PRO S COR- NER GOOD TO KNOW CELEBRATE DOUBLE EAGLE, HOLE IN ONE, PAR SHOOTER, CLUB CHAM- PIONSHIP PURPLE HEART GOLF CLAS- SIC OUTREACH THE TEEING GROUND The greens have firmed and the Bermuda is being nurtured. Sure signs of the second quarter push to even better golf conditions. We ve had a great start to the quarter with a new Club Champion, congratulations Jeff, a robust showing at the Purple Heart Golf Classic, a special thanks to all of you and to Mr. Robson, and some very special personal achievements by our members. Remember the SBRMGA is about you, golf and fellowship for all. THE SCORECARD INSIDER Guess what s back, The PRO S CORNER, a couple of photo spreads, some insights provided in GOOD TO KNOW, so many opportunities to CELEBRATE and Congratulate, how about a rare ALBATROSS/DOUBLE EAGLE an unexpected PAR SHOOTER in a T round and we re in contention in the PIMA CUP with only 18 points separating first to eighth. With these as appetizers perhaps we should all just sign in, sign up, tee it up and swing away in a weekly event. We ll pick up the SHAG BAG collecting thoughts like a basket of balls and final thoughts by Maria on FIRST TEE JITTERS next month. Did you know we re now up to some 160 members and counting. Not only is there room for all but openings abound. We know how to keep the carts moving on down the paths. 1
PAGE 2 PRO S CORNER PRACTICAL PUTTING We have all heard the phrase drive for show, putt for dough. And indeed, the putting portion of a round of golf is allocated 50% of the strokes taken in a theoretical par round of golf. That is a hefty portion of the game and really puts the leverage onto improving putting for better scores, but more importantly, better enjoyment of the game! Another phrase heard often outside of golf is if it isn t broken, don t fix it. This really applies to putting because so much of the putting game is confidence in rolling the ball into the hole and even a non-orthodox approach can be very successful at it. So when does a players need to examine putting technique? The first question to ask is, how often am I three putting? If three putts occur too often then the next question is how long is my first putt? With a first putt of 30 feet or more the player has a good chance that a three putt will occur as many players will leave a thirty foot put 3-5 feet from the hole. Five foot putts are holed an average of 50% of the time and three foot putts are holed 65% of the time. This leaves a good chance to three putt. If the reason the first putt is 30 feet or more is because the player had to hit a long iron or fairway wood into the green the problem is more likely that the tee selection is too long in yardage for that player. If it is due to chipping or pitching errors that is the source. If those causes are not the problem then a basic evaluation of the putting game is in order. Missed putts usually fall into one or both of two categories, poor aim and/or poor distance control. The sources of these issues are usually due to an incorrect understanding or implementation of aiming or utilization of a hard to control method of creating distance with the stroke. Continued Page 3. THE SCORECARD 2
P A G E 3 PRO S CORNER PRACTICAL PUTTING - CONTINUED To produce proper aim and control distance more easily with the putting stroke focus on the keys points below. Aim proper aim technique places the body line parallel to the target line and allows the putter to swing naturally without manipulation on the target line with a slight arc that keeps the face square much longer producing good contact and consistent distance. Stroke Method the best method to produce a putting stroke utilizes moving the arms together with the shoulders while keeping grip pressure light. This method will create consistent speed and tempo and controls distance by varying the stroke length. This style of stroke is the physically simplest way to control distance, especially under pressure. I hope these tips will get you on the path to a better putting game! If you would like additional help with your putting game I welcome the opportunity to work with you! Mike Jahaske Director of Golf SaddleBrooke Ranch Golf Club Starting over Perhaps a lesson... 3
P A G E 4 To Our Members GOOD TO KNOW Over the past year I have noticed that Posting Scores is becoming less of a problem than in the past. As I run my reports throughout the month, they are telling this committee that our members are realizing their responsibility in posting scores. How the Rules and Handicap Committee checks on posting of its members is very simple. A score posting report is run randomly throughout the month. This report has a three day delay, meaning if it is checking for a Tuesday posting, it will run on Friday morning. It is then compared against the tee sheet for that particular date. If your name appears on both reports, your name is then checked off and no further action is needed. Otherwise the committee will send out an informing you of a miss posting for that date. All that is needed from the member is to post their score for the date in question or do a reply back that you were either playing in a Best Ball/ Alternating Scramble, practicing or playing by yourself, all unacceptable for posting. If the member does not respond, the committee will then post a score, using either the highest or lowest score used in the member s last index revision. Whether you are here at the Ranch as a full time, part time or handicap only member or whether you play 9 or 18 holes, to post your scores helps in calculating and maintaining your true index and it also keeps us in compliance with the AGA It s one of the AGA requirements for maintaining the accuracy of each member s index here at SBRMGA. The committee wants to thank all members for taking the time to post your scores and to make our job a little easier. Rob Nemecek Rules and Handicap Chairman How about some relief let s look to May for some rules on relief. I know I can always use a clarification. 4
P A G E 5 SBRMGA MEMBER RICK SNOWDEN RARE DOUBLE EAGLE RECORDED How rare is an albatross / double eagle? The estimates have been reported from six million to one to one million to one. Let s stick with the low end. The Master s Tournament offers clarity as from inception through 2016 there has been four double eagles. Each of the par 5 s have had one and only one recorded. The most famous double eagle was by Gene Sarazen on the 15th in Another 32 years passed before Bruce Develin achieved the milestone on the 8th in Another 27 years passed before Jeff Maggert asserted himself into the discussion on the 13th. Finally Louis Oosthuizen nailed one on the 2nd hole in Rick Snowden retrieving his Double Eagle from the cup. Continued Page 6. T H E S C O R E C A R D 5
P A G E 6 RARE DOUBLE EAGLE COJNTINUED Appreciating the fine points of one of our greatest sports writers of all time, Grantland Rice describing Gene Sarazen s double eagle in 1935, we describe our very own Rick Snowden s remarkable achievement And then as he swung, the double miracle happened. The ball left the face of his spoon like a rifle shot. It never wavered from a direct line to the pin. As it struck the green a loud shout went up. Then suddenly it turned into a deafening reverberating roar, as the ball spun along its way and finally disappeared into the cup for a double eagle 2 a 2 on the 455 yard sweeping right to left dogleg downhill then uphill and again downhill 13th at SaddleBrooke Ranch Golf Club. Rick s drive over the arroyo left 190 yards mostly uphill to the pin and with a 4 hybrid the rare 2 on a par 5 resulted. It s rare at the professional level and you guessed it even rarer with the club in our hands. We celebrate with Rick - GREAT GOLFING. Witnesses Jim Lindley and Guy Shelton, March 9, Ed Cheszek hole in one hole #12, 156 yds. Continued Page 7 6
P A G E 7 MEMBER SHOOTS LIGHTS OUT SEVENTY TWO, BUT ONLY FOR ONE DAY The day before the start of the club championship, I played a round of golf with Guy Shelton. It was not a pretty sight. Guy played so-so (by his standards) but I played much worse. Nothing was working. My driver refused to drive. My short irons refused to hit the ball in the air and my putter seemed to be possessed by some evil spirit. Worst of all, my beloved five-iron appeared to have forsaken me. At the end of the round I asked Guy not to add up my score, but he ignored me I had shot a miserable 92. As we drove off the course, I vowed that I would never play this cruel, stupid and incredibly annoying game ever again. Eighteen hours later, I arrived at the driving range. I made a few swings and was pleasantly surprise that the ball seemed to go in roughly the right direction. In the chipping area and the putting green it was the same story. So by the time the first round of the championship started, I was hopeful that things would be better than they were the previous day and that (maybe) I could shoot something starting with an 8. My group started on hole 16 and, to my surprise, I made a birdie. A birdie that was nice, I had not made one of them in a while. The next few holes continued very pleasantly and after the first six holes, I was at even par. So I now start to think even if I made a bogey at each of the remaining holes, I would still shoot 84. That did not sound too bad. Far better than that lousy 92 of the previous day. After twelve holes, I still found myself sitting at one over par. By now the sun was shining brightly, the birds were singing in the trees and golf had become the most wonderful game ever invented. The only downside was that my score had not gone unnoticed by the other members of my group and they could not resist the chance to offer me some words of encouragement. Make him take a drug test. Send him back to England. And, most hurtful of all, bend his five iron. The round continued for another six holes and somehow I managed to make two more birdies and finished my round at even par. Yes, that s correct 72, not 92 or even 82, but 72. This was thirteen shots under my handicap and a cool seven shots better than any other round I have ever played in my life. wow! That evening when I got home, I told my loving wife all about it. Then I found one of my neighbors and told him. Then I told the landscaping guy who was nearby trying to fix a cactus. Then I told both of my cats. Finally, in the evening, a woman from Etrade called to try to sell me something. I told her as well. By this time it was now 9:00 PM and everyone in SaddleBrooke Ranch had gone to bed, so I went to bed also because there was no one left awake to listen to me. Continued Page 8. 7
P A G E 8 SEVENTY TWO, BUT ONLY FOR ONE DAY CONTINUED The following day, the second day of the club championship, my world returned to normality and I shot a second round of 84. If you asked me what happened on that first day. sorry, I have no explanation. The only thing I know is that I have never shot a score like that before and will (almost certainly) never shoot another one again. So here is a thought for you. The next time you shoot a 92, try not to get mad. Try to be happy, because (who knows) the next day it may be your turn to shoot a 72. Special thanks to my three playing companions on that day Mike Sosin, Alan Ness and Rob Nemecek. Karl Knight, Member Editor Post Script: by 2:10 PM Wednesday April 18 Karl s 72 was the chatter of the mailbox mavens as far away as the Villas and Units 16A & B. CONGRATULATIONS KARL, RICK AND ED 8
P A G E 9 CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP 2018 As if we have had too little to CELEBRATE. The CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP was played over two days in April the 18th and 19th. Weather cooperated in that day two had wind gusts of only 25 mph thus creating even greater interest. Sure beats the snow going on elsewhere in the U.S. After 36 holes a single stroke separated the 2018 Champion from the second place finisher. BIG CONGRATULATIONS to the 2018 CLUB CHAMPION, Jeff Pharr for his 77/ total, and to Steve Thompson (the 2017 CLUB CHAMPION) for his 156 total. Perhaps 2019 brings a rematch or better yet a challenge from several members. The CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP is structured in two divisions. The first is the 36 hole true gross Championship and the second is a flighted low net division The results of flighted division of the CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP follow: A Flight: Guy Shelton, Champion; and John DeYoung Runner up B Flight: Karl Knight, Champion; and Mike Tomaso, Runner up C Flight: Keith Drengler, Champion; and Tony Wells Runner up D Flight: Chuck Meier, Champion; and John Trapp, Runner up We enjoyed the play of 51 members in the 2018 Club Championship. The CHAMPIONSHIP was concluded with a festive celebratory lunch at Bubbs Grub for our members. We look forward to even greater numbers for our fourth Special Event, the Founders Cup, November So let s tee it up for another two days of fellowship and of course T scores.
