Members Update DATE: APRIL 2017 U PDATE # 15 Chairman s Update Hi Members, Congratulations to all the winners in the Club Championships and a special thanks to the match committee for a well organised event. A reminder to all members that club subscriptions were issued at the end of February and were due prior to the end of March. As we transition to our quiet time of the year it s important that all outstanding memberships are paid ASAP as we need to make sure our winter war chest is strong enough to get the club through the lean months. If you are having issues with paying, please see Paul to organise an arrangement. If you have not organised this by the 15 th of April you will not be entitled to play on the course. We have recently said goodbye to our accounts lady Rebecca Burton (or wonder woman as she was referred to). Rebecca has made the decision to relocate to Perth and join the police force so we wish her all the best in her new career. We are pleased to announce that Nadia Murphy who has now commenced in the accounts/admin assistant role so please make her feel welcome. We have a lot of exciting golf events coming up in the next few weeks so we hope to see as many of you as possible participating and enjoying our golf course. Craig Costello Chairperson Manager s Message We have had a very busy few months at the Club with the Match Committee having their hands full between the 2 rounds of Summer Cup, Opening Day & 3 rounds of Club Championships in February & March, thank you all for the huge effort you have put in! We look forward to some great competitions in the near future including the NHBB Easter Shootout & Pro-Am in June to name two. Please note that the Master Medallist taking place within this Saturday s competition. This is open to all who have won the monthly medal in the last year, we hope to see you on Saturday! Thank you to all members who have paid their membership fees already and a reminder to all who haven t that fees are now overdue. The Tuesday & Friday morning social golf remains very popular but very few people are taking up the opportunity to register & play in 9 hole competitions. The match committee have decided to keep the competitions running for the month of April but if participation numbers don t increase, we will have to put the 9 Hole competitions on hold, revisit in the Spring and hope for more uptake at that stage. Let s hope we see an increase in numbers in the month of April. As many of you may have noticed, we have agreed to fill up the lake at the back of the first hole surrounding Peter Felton s office. We were first approached by Peter Felton & subsequently by an environmental officer from the City of Busselton, asking if we can assist Peter & the City by filling up the lake. As a community-oriented Club and considering we have adequate water to stocks to get through until our wet winter season, we felt it was the right thing to do. Please note that this was done on the proviso that it is a once off and a long-term solution is to be found by next Spring when we will not be in a position to assist due to the reticulation requirements of the course. At least we won t have to suffer the smell at the end of our first hole again! Please note that our membership Tags have arrived, please see the pro-shop to collect yours (if you have paid your fees of course)! Looking forward to a busy few months before the Winter. Paul Devaney Club Manager
House Committee Tavern / Restaurant Update The club is fortunate to have Bree and Dale Wiley from Escape The Kitchen wanting to take over our tavern kitchen. Bree and Dale previously ran Enjoia Restaurant in Dunsborough ( ) and many members will know that they established a reputation for great food and friendly service. The Wiley s plan to repeat and exceed this success at the club. To help Dale work his magic, the club has ordered a new turbofan convection oven for the kitchen. Members who stayed for presentations on Wednesday night were treated with samples of possible food offerings. One word - YUM!! They hope to have the restaurant operational by next Wednesday (12th April) and plan to be open Wednesday to Sundays from 12 8pm. Bookings can be made through the tavern. Please make them feel welcome and support their endeavours as we are sure you will find their meals delicious. A big thank you to Bruce Kerr, Trevor MacKinnon & Dave Begley and to all others who go over & above to help the Club. Ian Morrison House Committee Course The verti-cutting has been completed and what a difference this has made! Thanks to all those that gave up their time to drive the tractors, we would not have been able to complete the task without you! We are now cutting the fairways to 9mm to help prevent thatch build up and a maintenance program is being established to prevent this happening again. New sand is going in the bunkers next week and we will also be putting drainage in the bunkers to prevent water laying in them. This will make a huge difference to the course during those wet winter months. This will all be done by the volunteers, so thanks in advance to them! The cart path on the 17 th Tee has been paved and looks great. A special thanks must be made to Ross Towers, Andrew Collis and Harvo for all their help. The end of the cart paths are also being paved, again all done by our wonderful volunteers. As I ve said, the verti-cutting was completed by our volunteers, some of whom had never driven a tractor before, I thought I would share an I received by one of our volunteers who shall remain nameless, but his first name starts with Gr and rhymes with can t and his second name starts with a G. Yep, I m absolutely knackered. 5 hours and a 7am start! I didn t realise people were out and about at that time! You can t even buy coffee then. I only saw a couple of other cars on the road. Sheeite its tough, hot, dirty work this labouring, verti-thinging thing. And I had to put up with my co-driver mate, Pete J advising me how to steer, drive, reverse, accelerate, decelerate, brake, slow, verticut, sit, stand, drink, look, swerve, corner, lift, drop, block, shoot, pull, push, pump, grease, oil, turn, throw, follow through, panic, anticipate, relax, watch, listen, clear, cut, whip, wash, whisk, wear you get my drift. Just joking Pete we were a great team! But look Gouldie, thanks, I enjoyed the work thing (ok that s a lie) but I m totally over it now. It s enough for me for this lifetime. Next time - I ll call you. I think I m better at long term, deep, deep thinking. And I m thinking of joining Busselton.as a low key, anonymous member. As you can see this is our industrious Club Manager at 6.00am on a Monday morning helping Justin change a valve. Yes, he is only leaning on the shovel but be assured that I did see him use it! The point though is, he was interested enough in learning how to do it that he came to work extra early! Wayne Gould This photo is a picture of our Course Marshall cart when he had a lapse of concentration whilst marshalling on a Wednesday comp!!
2017 Club Championships The 2017 Club Championships have been completed, with exciting results in every category. All 5 divisions were decided by a single stroke or won on a countback or playoff. Ladies B Grade Champion - Vicki Haunold Ladies B Grade Runner-up - Robyn Moore Ladies A Grade Net Champion - Jan Quinn Ladies A Grade Runner-up - Sally Chandler Ladies Club Champion - Michele Keogh Ladies Club Champion Runner-up - Val Pullan Men's C Grade Champion - Allan Kay Men's C Grade Runner-up - Bob Hughes Men's B Grade Champion - Ned Dixon Men's B Grade Runner-up - Chris Bold Men's A Grade Net Champion - Gerry Keogh Men's A Grade Net Runner-up - Kim Allsop Men's Club Champion - Cy Edwards Men's Club Champion Runner-up - Glenn Carter As mentioned, there were very exciting times in all divisions. Men's C grade decided by a single point, Men's B grade was decided by a countback. The Men's A grade net was again only a single shot, as was the overall Club Champion. Gerry, Cy and Frank Horwood all started the last round even. After 17 holes of lead changes, Cy made a great 4 on the last to prevail by a single stroke from Gerry and Glenn Carter, who started the last round 6 strokes behind, but could not quite make up the ground. In the Ladies, again single points/strokes were what decided the B grade and A grade Net, whilst excitement prevailed in the Ladies Club Championship. After 18 holes of battle, Michele and Val could still not be separated, so went to a 3 hole playoff. They were still even after the playoff holes, so it was off to sudden death, with Michele sinking a great putt on the first hole of the sudden death playoff to secure the win. This was the first Club Championship for both Michele and Cy. Congratulations to them both. The new Dunsborough Cup sponsored by Garry Tucker & Rob Allison was a huge success. This new trophy rewards the male and female overall net winner, regardless of their division. We are hoping the success of this will spread around and more people will wish to get involved next year. The Ladies winner was Michele Keogh, topping off a great Championship, whilst in the Men's, Allan Kay was the winner of the Cup. Both Michele and Allan were extremely excited to be the inaugural winners of this award. We are sure the magnificent trophies supplied by Gary & Rob will be well viewed at home! Glenn Carter Vice Captain
Captain s Report Our second Ladies Open Day will be held on Thursday 27th April. The flyers have been sent out and we are hoping for a good response. Fourteen club members played in the Margaret River Vets day on Monday so we all took the opportunity to network amongst the players there to attend our Ladies Day. Please feel free to invite any golfing friends to join us on the day they just need to have an official golflink number. Our Vets had a great day in Margaret River with a number of ladies winning prizes on the day. Thanks to Jan Plant our Rep. this year on the South West Vets Committee, and to Chris Marshall her offsider. After Ladies Day our next big event is the Pro-Am on Thursday June 1st. The Pro Am flyers have been printed and are available from Len Thomas or the Pro Shop. Many of the teams have already been filled so get in quick if you want to participate in this great event. Ladies Pennants begin on the 24 th April and we have entered an A and B Grade Team. It is a great opportunity for members to play Match Play on some great courses. Good luck to all those players who will be representing the Dunsborough Lakes Golf Club. Club Championships were disappointing this year with only 65 entries. It if very difficult to have members who are mostly social players commit to a 3 day competition over two weekends. Maybe it is time to change the format, however that decision will be up to the incoming Committees. A special thank you to all those who made the event possible. These included: Urban Quarter, our sponsors, Neil, the ground staff and volunteers who had the course in such great condition, Paul and the Pro Shop staff, The tavern staff who once again fed and watered us, Jane Gould and Sally Chandler who had an enormous job setting up the competition and finalising it, Glenn Carter for his input and for taking over the presentation and all the others who helped on the days your efforts were truly appreciated. Singles knockout has begun with the first round to be finished on the 9 th April. We have been pleased with the efforts of everyone in relation to pace of play thank you for keeping up with the group in front, not in front of the group behind. There have been, however, a few incidents lately of players hitting up on the people in front. Etiquette is that Players should not play until the group in front is clearly out of range. In the interest of everyone s safety as well as displaying good golf etiquette it would be appreciated if this could be kept in mind. Thanks once again to all the committees, staff and volunteers for their great work in making golf a wonderful experience at Dunsborough Lakes. Happy Golfing... Sandra Haunold Captain 9 Hole Golf Competitions Change of start time The Tuesday and Friday morning social competitions have been moved from a 7:30am start to an 8:30am start (with an 8:15am arrival). Looking forward to seeing you on the course.

Easter Monday Comp NHBB(New Home Building Brokers)Triple Treat Shoot Out Inspired by the World Super 6 tournament at Lake Karrinyup earlier this year a new competition on Easter Monday has been planned. This is to be an open event as long as players have a Golflink handicap. In a nutshell... 12pm shotgun start over 9 holes. Teams of 3,combined stableford based on daily handicap, Men to play blue tees It will be played in sixes (not that we are all not honest, but...) As for the shoot-out component, after the combined stableford, the top teams will go to a specially made tee approx 85 metres from the pin on #18. All three players will play from the tee with the nearest two to be measured and the team with the lowest measurement to proceed to next round. If we have 30+ teams, we envisage a 16 team playoff (4 rounds). If we have less than 30 teams, the top 10 teams will qualify for the shootout, with first 6 having a bye and the next four having a shootout to decide the last two places in final eight. Any countbacks would just be a last three holes combined, then six or hole by hole if required. For the two final groups, the winner will be decided by both teams playing the hole out in full, with the winning team decided on strokes made. Choose your team & starting hole wisely as you will only play 9 holes, regardless of where you start on the course! Marketing All tee box signs and signage around the Clubhouse has been updated with our current logo. The team is diligently working on finalising our new website& its content, thanks to the marketing team for your outstanding efforts. We have now recruited 70 new members to the Club since dropping the nomination fee, let s hope we can retain them all now that our 2017/18 fees are due! A big welcome to all our new members! If you are one of those who lookup their Golflink history online, you would have noticed that the old Golflink web address is no longer in use. Instead the address is now This is the official Australian Golf website. Enter your Golflink number at the top of the page and a much more detailed history is available to you. Jane Gould Junior Golf Update Louisa Chapman from Duns. Primary ran some morning sessions of golf this term, culminating in the 12 students coming to our course for their last session on Thursday 23rd March. The kids had a great time thankyou to Pam Hughes and the volunteers who helped out on the morning. The Juniors program now takes a break over the holidays but will be up and running for Term 2. Click on the Juniors button on our club website for further information.
12th April South-West Cycles Annual Day * 17th April 24th April 27th April 1st June Easter Monday Triple Treat Shoot Out Ladies Pennants start Ladies Open Day Pro Am As part of Southwest Cycles (Lee Worthington s) Annual Day on Wednesday April 12, the Mizuno rep Rob Clark will be doing a Mizuno Demo day in the couple of hours before the comp. Members can just turn up to try some clubs, but if you call Rob on before the day, he will be happy to arrange a specific fitting for you. A little Easter Golf Humour... Jesus, Moses, and an old man are playing golf. Moses tees up and hits his ball into the water trap. Nonplussed he goes over to the lake, parts the water with his club and hits the ball onto the green. Jesus tees up next and also manages to land in the water trap where the ball curiously floats. So he walks down to the lake, across the water, and hits his ball out onto the green. Last to tee up is the old man whose ball also heads straight for the water. As the ball hits the surface of the water a fish jumps up and swallows it and is immediately grabbed by an eagle which deposits the fish on the green. The ball shoots out of the fish s mouth and rolls into the cup. Jesus turns around and says, Nice shot Dad, but would you quit messing around and play golf?
