As usual, the course is in great condition thanks to the hard work of Todd and his crew. Be sure to thank them whenever you get the opportunity. Tim is gearing up his staff for the busy months ahead and the pro shop is fully stocked with all of your golf needs. Patronize your PGA pro as he is a great asset to the Club in managing not only our needs, but those of the public upon whom we depend so much. Tim s efforts and know-how maximize our income potential. We hope that you will participate in the tournaments held at the club. A vibrant and healthy club is dependent on member participation. We all have busy schedules, so we all need to relax. One way is to play in the tournaments and enjoy the camaraderie that follows each event. Likewise, I urge you to patronize our stewards. Sam has a wealth of experience in the food service industry and is providing us with excellent service and quality meals. A vibrant and full clubhouse is part and parcel of the club experience and shows our guests (all prospective members, we hope) that Wayne Hills is a club worth joining. The financial situation of our club is quite comparable to most of the similarly situated golf clubs throughout the area difficult and troublesome. The Board has explored many options to help generate more revenue. The Board Wayne Hills News / Volume 56/ No. 2 / June makes every effort to avoid having to seek additional revenue from the members by assessment but, in these difficult times, it is not always possible. If an assessment becomes necessary, we may try to offset the impact to the members by offering them the chance to work off the assessment by selling raffle tickets. The raffle has generated needed income in the past and is under consideration by the Board. Public play is now the lifeblood of the club. As members, we must do everything to make our guests feel welcome so that they will return or, if of a mind, join as members. Often the outside player, unfamiliar with the course, will play at a slower pace than a member. Please have some patience. The pro shop staff will do everything possible to maintain a 4 hour round but, at times, this may not be possible. Likewise, we have several new members this year. Please welcome them so that they feel part of the Wayne Hills family. If you are short a person in your group, find out from the pro shop if there is someone that might need a game. It makes the new member or single green fee player more likely to stay or join if an effort is made by the membership to welcome them. I and the Board hope everyone will do their part in helping Wayne Hills Country Club continue to be one of the best bargains in our area and one of the premier golf courses in the Finger Lakes area. Phelps Chipping Putting Tips Overview Most golfers know that in order to shave strokes off your score, you have to perfect your chipping and pitching. Practice makes perfect when you have a short shot of 50 yards or less. You will have to experiment with which club to use, and how far to take the club back to achieve the distance you want. The Pitch Shot To make a pitch shot, use a high lofted and a shortened version of your regular swing by taking the club half way back and half way through the ball. For a 50-yard pitch shot, place the club flat on its sole and square the club to the target line. Your feet will be less than shoulder width apart and your body will face slightly to the left of the target in an open stance. Position the ball in the center of your stance and lean forward towards the balls of your feet and slightly to your left (for a right handed player). Place your hands in front of the ball. There is some hand movement as you come through the ball on impact. Your body will face the target at the finish. The distance you achieve will vary with how far you take the club back, so practice to become consistent with the pitch shot. The Bump and Run Shot The goal of the bump and run shot is to position the ball on the green so that you will have a makeable putt. For a short chip shot of 30 yards or less from the hole with no hazards between the ball and the pin, use the "bump and run." With this shot, the ball is "bumped" onto or just short of the green and it "runs" to the hole. Select a lower lofted club like a 6, 7, or 8 iron to attain a lower trajectory. Position the ball toward your back foot away from the hole, and keep your legs closer together. The face of the club is not opened. Grasp the club firmly with your hands ahead of the ball and use a downward swing, hitting the ground and the ball at the same time. Follow through by hitting through the ball.
