Malahide Golf Club FORE JANUARY 2018 M ALAHIDE GOLF CLUB What a day! The afternoon of Saturday, January 6th was bright, sunny and very cold with a great gathering of members and visitors on the clubhouse balcony to witness the 2018 Captains drive in. Nobody was quite sure how the Captains were going to arrive. In the past we have had limos, motor bikes, horse drawn carriages and talk of helicopters The Close Encounters of the Third Kind soundtrack over the PA system gave a clue of something hitech, space age about to happen, and indeed it did. The Captains, Jim and Eileen and Junior Captains, Sergio and Isabelle appeared in the dim distance up the last fairway on four Segways and weaved their way up to the clubhouse in what must have been one of the most novel entrances ever seen in Malahide or any other Golf Club for that matter. Three of the drives were up to the usual standards we have come to expect on drive in day, but the fourth, well, the less said about it the better. In any event it was a memorable day of great good humour, the tone being set by Master of Ceremonies, Vice President Anne. It got 2018 off to a memorable start. I have a number of wishes for 2018 and my year as President. The first is that the atmosphere of good humour and friendship generated in the club on drive in day carries through for the rest of the year. It will be difficult, but I hope that we can go some way to matching the achievements of our teams in I hope that all members enjoy their golf and whatever other activities they are involved in in the club throughout We have a large number of members who volunteer to sit on committees and sub committees, manage teams, process competition results, look after our juniors, run the many subgroups in the club and help out in many more ways. I would like to acknowledge the efforts put in by all those members. Without this help, the club could not operate. I congratulate outgoing President, Paddy Walsh, for a great year on the interclub golfing front and I thank him for nominating me as his successor. Finally, I want to wish everybody a very Happy New Year. Donal Hughes President
Captains Address The start of the New Year is upon us. Everyone is keen to kick off our new season, setting our New Year Golf Goals and making resolutions to improve the key aspects of our game. Meanwhile what a great day it was at the Drive In. Your good wishes to us, your Captains, is very much appreciated. Junior Captains, Isabelle and Sergio, also extend their thanks to the members for the support given on the day. As ever the Drive In was very well supported and it is a tremendous club day to kick-start the year. Onwards now to the winter leagues and beyond. Our club remains the envy of most for many reasons, and, as Captains, with your help, we are focused on helping to make Malahide Golf Club the best members club in Dublin on the planet!!! The club will keenly pursue all the other integral activities also, in accordance with our motto, music (new musical director for the choir), cards (bridge/poker) Art, Photography, Snooker, Table-tennis, etc., and of course our Social Events, which are so much a part of how we stand out as a club. We would love you all to enter wholeheartedly into the spirit and fun of these occasions. We will continue to be a patron to many charities and will look forward to hosting many visitors for golf and activities. We will manage and guard our course (its greens and bunkers!) and look out for its environment, flora and fauna. We are ready to drive team success in 2018 with the support of all members, panels, and managers. We are very optimistic for a successful thrilling year at all levels and for all categories. Meanwhile we have negotiated a swop day with Hermitage Golf Club (rated as best parkland course 2013, 2016, and 2017 for next June (bank holiday week-end). We can t thank our volunteers enough, or often enough, for all the work they do. Without you this club would not be the great club it is. So please let s be fair to our fellow players, and remember to move on effectively on the course. As Captains, we are very excited and optimistic about the year ahead and rely on your support for all the various social and inter-club activities going forward. We hope you all had a Happy Christmas and wishing you all a Healthy and Successful New Year. Captains Jim and Eileen. 2

Junior Captains Address Isabelle Flynn is 17 years old and a current fifth year student in Malahide Community School. Isabelle started playing golf when she was a cadet at age 10. Golfing is in her family as both of her Grandmothers play with her maternal Grandmother a member of Malahide (Mary Corbett) and her parents and siblings are also members of Malahide. Isabelle has always enjoyed both playing and watching the game. She also plays basketball and has represented Dublin and Leinster in the All-Ireland Community Games. Isabelle is thrilled to have been given the honour of Malahide Golf Club s Junior Girls Captain for 2018, and is looking forward to the golfing year ahead. Isabelle Flynn Junior Girls Captain 2018 It is an honour to be selected as Malahide Golf Club Junior Boys Captain It will be a privilege to represent the many talented juveniles in the club and I would like to thank John McGarry and the junior committee for giving me this opportunity and for all their hard work over the last few years. I started hitting balls alongside my dad from the age of two on the beach and enjoyed playing pitch and putt with my granddad in my younger years. I joined this club in 2012 as a juvenile and since then have gained a huge amount of experience and confidence, playing in junior teams and senior teams for the club. I would like to thank Donal Hughes, John Murray, Paul Hickey, Joe Daly and countless more members that have shown me extreme generosity over the years. I owe them a huge amount, not only for my golf, but giving me the opportunity and confidence to play on many teams that I hugely enjoyed being part of. I would like to wish President Donal, Captain Jim, Lady Captain Eileen and Junior Girls Captain, Isabelle, the best of luck for the year ahead. I hope 2018 will be a successful and enjoyable golfing year for all. Sergio Ganaza Junior Boys Captain 2018 Isabelle Flynn Sergio Ganaza 4

New Course Consultant As part of producing a strategy for Malahide golf course over the next 10 years, we recommend the appointment of a course design consultant to work alongside Colm Murphy (course superintendent) and Dr Michael Foxe (course agronomist). This approach has been taken by such clubs as the Grange seconding Ken Kearney and now in 2017 Paul McGinley with great success. Course Report Fore December 2017 The course committee recommend Malahide golf club should adopt the same approach in order to continually improve the course using expert opinion, with this in mind and having discussed this with Colm and Dr Foxe we decided to approach Philip Walton to discuss this new position. Philip was very interested and excited about the possibility of working with us in Malahide golf club. Philip has designed Dundrum House in Tipperary and Helens Bay in Wexford, he has also played on the European tour, European seniors tour and in majors such as The Open and US open. He has a vast experience playing some of the best courses in the world and has been a member of Malahide for over 40 years. Crucially this cost will remain within the course budget and our exposure is minimal. Having discussed this with the course committee, we all agree Philip is a great fit for Malahide golf club. Philip will start in
New Course Committee will see several changes to the course committee, Evelyn Magee, Hugh Campbell, Leo Finlay and Michael Purcell have finished their term on the committee and I would like to thank them for all their hard work and contributions they have made to the committee. The New Committee for 2018, Colm Murphy (Course Superintendent), Darragh Smith (Course Convenor), John Murray (Club Professional), Anna McGrath, Troy Henshaw, Vice Captain s Laura Mahony, Brendan Ryan, Vice President Anne McDonagh. Tee Box - 1st Yellow This project will start in January 2018 and will be ready to play in March/April 2018, after much discussion and consultation the plan is to clear the required amount of tress from this, install new irrigation and re-sod the existing teeing area. Tee Box Project As part of the course plan a complete review of tee boxes will be carried out by Philip Walton and recommendations will be made to the members, the feedback from the member s survey clearly indicated that improvement in tee boxes was the number one requirement by members in relation to the golf course. New Tee Box Markers The course committee has decided to install new tee box markers on all three nines. The existing stone markers have been in place over 10 years. The new posts should be in place by April We will also be installing three new Twin post tee box signs with clocks and club logo for the 1st Blue, 1st Red and 1st Yellow. New Course Signage As part of the ongoing project to improve the on course signage we will be installing new signage in January. 10 Tim Cremin Snooker Competition Following a break of several years, rumoured to be because the current Captain (no names mentioned) wanted a trophy on his mantlepiece to admire, the Tim Cremin Memorial Snooker Trophy (Club Snooker Championship) was played. The singles tournament ran through November/ December, starting with 36 players and with Paul Nolan taking the scalp of the barber Liam Egan in a final where official referee Tommy Rusk dressed for the occasion. John Murtagh and Brendan Byrne being the losing semi-finalists. Matches were over 3 frames except the final which was over 5 frames. Mary and Conor Cremin presented the Tim Cremin Memorial Snooker Trophy to Paul Nolan after the game and were delighted to see the competition re-established. The snooker committee have decided to run a doubles competition in January/February open to all members including beginners as players will be handicapped according to ability. Further information available from Chris Ryan snooker co-ordinator. Runner Up: Liam Egan ~ Referee: Tommy Rusk ~ Winner: Paul Nolan 10 Captain Jim, Conor Cremin, Mary Cremin, Winner Paul Nolan, Snooker Co-ordinator Chris Ryan
John Murtagh In October 1958 Tom Craddock met Tony Murtagh in Maurice Mahon s shop and suggested Tony might consider joining Malahide GC as Malahide had ambitions about winning a Senior Cup. Frank Sullivan, Hon. Secretary 1958 entered the shop and said he would second Tony and Tony was declared a member there and then! Tony went down to the course that day and in combination with Seamie Reilly (father of Alan) won the fourball competition. By 1960 the club had assembled a strong panel of the Craddock brothers (Tom, Mick and Paddy), Joe Lawless, Frank Firth and Sean Donnelly. At the time the Leinster Senior Cup was played over successive days in a single week. Tony Murtagh was a bar man in Parnell St. and in order to play Tony had to employ a locum to do his shift whilst he played in the Senior Cup in the Grange on a day by day basis. Tony recalls it cost him more than a weeks wages to cover his locum and taxis. In the semi-final Tony defeated Sutton GC international Jimmy Carroll 6 and 5 (the first time Jimmy Carroll had lost an inter club match-play game in 14 years) and in the final Tony beat Tom Shaw of Mullingar 2up as Malahide were crowned Leinster Champions. Tony was selected to play Artisan Members circa 1961 Leinster juniors in 1961 & 1962 only for a motorbike accident to cut short his inter provincial career. Back: Peter Dunne, Brendan Whelan, Tony Nugent, Paddy Caul, Willie O Rourke, Tony Murtagh. Front: Joe Lawless, Paddy Nugent, Des Cregan, Paddy Craddock, Buddy McGuire (Caddy Portmarnock), Oliver Cremer Senior Cup Winners When 1965 came around the Senior Cup panel was strengthened by the addition of Sean Flanagan and Paddy Caul. Winning Leinster the panel progressed to Ballybunion for the all-ireland Finals. Tony was victorious in the Semi Final over Liam Higgins (Cork GC) later to become the Waterville professional. Tony also won in the Final 4 & 3 over Brian Wilson (Malone GC) as Malahide won the All-Ireland Senior Cup. Tony s son John (member of Malahide GC and winner of the Lumsden Cup 1995) holds a Leinster Junior Cup medal making the Murtagh s unique in Malahide GC in that both the father Tony and son John hold Senior and Junior medals respectively. Back: Sean Flanagan, Paddy Caul, Tom Craddock, Tony Murtagh, Joe Lawless Front: Frank Sullivan (Hon Sec.), P.A. Foley (President), Paddy Kelly (Captain) 11
