1 Deerpark Diary Carlow Golf Club s Monthly Newsletter Issue 2 April/May 2017 In this issue Captains Drive in special Matchplay presentation Snooker final Rose of Tralee Ladies Scratch Cup Club notes Dress Code & Etiquette Oldies The annual Captain s Drive-in is always one of the most eagerly anticipated fixtures in the Carlow Golf Club Calendar and this year our captains made it a day to remember. Stepping out like two 70 s glam rock stars on stage from a smoke filled vehicle Captains Mo & Marie Marie looking like a modern day Lulu or Dusty Springfield while Mo looking like the long lost brother of Bjorn from ABBA Both Captains looked terrific and a large crowd turned out to support them The weather was fabulous and the time sheet full. With 2 Shotgun starts there was a great atmosphere in the club all day and all the golfers were treated to a gorgeous buffet courtesy of James & Eilish. The celebrations continued long into the evening with a terrific set of retro music played late into the night. 6 2016 Match Play Presentations Winners of 2016 Match Play competitions were also presented with their prizes on the night of Captains Drive in. Shan is currently receiving treatment in Texas for her rare condition and all our thoughts are with her and her family. Carlow Golf Club felt it was important to support Shan. 7 Snooker Captains Cup Final The final of the Captains Cup Snooker tournament took place over Easter weekend with an eagerly anticipated final between 2 experienced cue men Mick Long and Colm Hayden. As ever the experienced Michael O Toole was on hand to referee the final. On the night Colm proved too strong for Mick and emerged as a deserving champion. Well done to both men for getting to the final and playing it in a very friendly and sportsmanlike fashion. Congratulations to Martin Goff and Stephen Doyle on organising another successful tournament. Rose of Tralee 2017 The very best of luck to our own Becki Lennon who will be representing Carlow Golf Club at the Carlow heat of the Rose of Tralee for As you will know Becki works part time as a waitress in the clubhouse and is a very popular member of staff. We are all very proud of her and we know she will be fantastic on the night. If you would like to support Becki, the final will be taking place us in the Woodford Dolmen Hotel Carlow on May 26th, tickets will be available on the door. Deerpark Diary: Page 7 of 13

8 Ladies Scratch Cup A total of 66 competitors teed off for the Ladies Scratch cup played in March. Some excellent golf was played over 36 holes with Paula Grant (+2) from Lisburn emerging victorious with a total of 144 with Killarneys Valerie Clancy in 2 nd place on 148. Carlow were represented by defending champion Aedin Murphy, Bernie Cox and Madeline Brennan. Special thanks to our sponsors Dinn Rí for their continuing support Thanks to the Grounds Team for delivering the course in tip-top condition, so early in the season. 9 Club Notes Mens Match Play Competitions The entry sheets for the Presidents Cup and Bramley Cup are now posted on the club notice board. Closing date for entries will be Sunday 14th May. All matchplay competitions are pre-pay, no pay - no play! Here are the rules of each of the competitions... Bramley Trophy Holes Fourball Matchplay. 2. Entry Fee 5 per person (All entries must be prepaid and placed in matchplay box adjacent to bar door no exceptions). 3. Play from blue tees. 4. Full handicaps with handicaps on day of match to apply. 5. The onus lies equally on both pairings to arrange matches. 6. Competitors are advised to put contact phone numbers with their names on entry. 7. Competitors names put forward as winners of a match MAY NOT be subsequently changed. 8. Under no circumstances will extensions be granted. 9. Entries close Sunday 14th May 2017 President s Cup Holes Singles Matchplay. 2. Entry Fee 5.00 (All entries must be prepaid prior to closing date and placed in matchplay box adjacent to bar door no exceptions). 3. Play from blue tees. 4. Full shot handicap difference to apply with handicap on day of match to apply. 5. The onus lies equally on both pairings to arrange matches. 6. Competitors are advised to put contact phone numbers with their names on entry. 7. Competitors names put forward as winners of a match may not be subsequently changed. 8. Under no circumstances will extensions be granted. 9. Entries close Sunday 14th May 2017 Men s Competitions The last mens singles competition saw 199 men play in the Governey Cup. This is a great turn out, what makes it even better is that 196 players played the full 18 holes and all 199 returned their cards using the computer. Well done lads! Keep it Up! 10 Open Week 2017 Carlow Golf Club Open Week 2017 will take place form June 2 nd to June 10 th inclusive. There are a number of changes with some new competitions. Ladies Day will be a Team of 3, there is also the Love Carlow Team of 3 any combination on the Thursday. There are one or two changes to the evening competitions with a Fun 2 Club 9 Hole Competition on the Tuesday evening. There will also be a chance to place in the Relationship Team of Two which is sure to cause a few family arguments. Time sheets will go live on Thursday May 18 th at 9 p.m. Please try and support Open week and all our long standing sponsors who make Open week what it is Open Week Raffle By now some of you have received a card to sell some lines for the Open Week Raffle The Carlow Golf Club raffle has a bit of history with coming up with novel ideas. In the 60 s past Captain Harry Ewing raffled a race horse and in the 80 s a trip to Cheltenham was up for grabs. This year we are offering 2 return flights to New York plus $500 spending money which I m sure you agree is a fantastic prize. A line is 10 which is excellent value for an excellent prize. 11 Course Looking after our course is vitally important. Take a bag of sand when heading out on the course and fill in the divots. Replace your divots and pitch marks. Do not throw away empty bottles our wrappers on the course. Rake bunkers after you have been in them we have invested in our bunker refurbishment programme and its in all of our interests to keep them in tip top shape Golf Buggies Some members have been observed driving golf buggies up the side of the 16 th tee box from the 15 th green and onto other tee boxes. This is not allowed We ask all buggy drivers and users to respect the course drive carefully and never have more than two occupants in the buggy on the course. Men's Club - New Colours New Club Colours for the men The new navy jumpers for the men s club look great and all of the teams are now in transformation to the new colours. Thanks to all who have purchased one already, Andy and Sean will look after you if you require one. Deerpark Diary: Page 11 of 13

12 Carlow Golf Club Dress Code The club has a definite Dress Code both on and off the course. Pictures of the suggested attire are around the clubhouse and at the first tee. Try and dress like the Professionals and you can t go wrong. On the Course: Golf shoes must be worn. Singlets are not permitted. Denim jeans are not permitted. Attire such as football, soccer or rugby shirts, hoodies and tracksuits are not permitted. Only tailored shorts, together with sports socks are permitted. Trouser legs should not be tucked into socks. Mobile phones should not be used on the course (except in the case of emergencies). In the Clubhouse: Golf shoes, sports caps and tracksuits are not permitted. Dress should be neat and tidy, in keeping with the high standards of the club; Denim jeans are permitted. Mobile phones may be used but please do so in a discreet and respectful manner. Gridlock When a prominent member was recently asked why he was late for his Tee Time he said he was delayed by a swan on Graiguecullen Bridge. It was actually true! Deerpark Diary: Page 12 of 13
