2 GOLF SCHOLARSHIPS In Edition No. 4 of this Newsletter you were informed that Golf Scholarships were available in Sterling University and St. Andrews University. Since that time we have been informed that such Scholarships are all available at the University of Dundee. All enquiries directly to the Colleges. WHO'S WHO IN 1990 UNION OFFICERS & CAPTAINS President Gerard D. Golden PresidentElect Desmond Rea O'Kelly Honorary Secretary J. Gerard O'Brien Honorary Treasurer David M. McAuley Team Captain George F. Crosbie Youths' Captain Michael P. O'Donoghue Boys' Captain John McKernan HEALTH AND SAFETY A circular was recently issued to all Clubs informing them that there were new laws on the Statute Books for the 26 Counties dealing with Health & Safety and that all sporting clubs were covered by this legislation. The circular also pointed out that Clubs in the 6 Counties were similarly covered by a 1974 British Act. The notification advised Clubs that they should employ the services of a Safety Engineer to advise them. The Union has been informed that this is serious and important legislation so do not delay in seeking expert advice. PUBLIC GOLF The Union is delighted to learn that Dublin Co. Council is planning to build Public Courses at Tallaght, Blanchardstown and Clondalkin. PROVINCIAL OFFICERS & CAPTAINS Chairman Honorary Secretary Honorary Treasurer Hatch & H/C Secretary Senior Captain Junior Captain ULSTER Robert Bell Peter O'Hara Harold Richardson William Black Alan McDade David Long HUNSTER John O'Reilly Richard Barry Richard Barry Percy Shannon Noel Pyne Sean McMahon LEINSTER Eamon Curran Paul Smyth Ui I liam Rossiter Andy Doherty James Greene CONNACHT Declan Howley Tom Grealy Tom Grealy Sean Hosty Eddie Dunne Ken Cunningham GREENKEEPERS TRAINING The Greenkeeper Training Course which is run in the Botanic Gardens is so successful that the next Course, due to commence in September 1990, must be limited to 35 people. Subjective selection of 35 pupils would not be desirable so a "first come first served" basis will be applied. Already twenty five applications have been received. The Greenkeeper Training Committee recommends to Clubs that they should consider employing a Greenkeeper Designate who will take over the job in the fullness of time. It is worth bearing in mind that Greenkeepers who have obtained the London City & Guilds Certificate through the Botanic Gardens Training Course are highly qualified technically and, with a few years experience under their belts, will be first class Greenkeepers. SPONSORS 1990 We are delighted to report that the undernoted firms will once again be supporting Union events in 1990: Taylor Investment Group (Irish Seniors) Thomas Cook Travellers Cheques (Irish Close, Boys, Youths) Furstenberg (Cups & Shields) Heineken (Senior Interprovincials) Carroll Tobacco Co. (Mixed Foursomes) Smurfit Packaging (Junior Foursomes) Macgregor Golf (Golf Bags for Senior & Junior Teams) TwoMorrow Golf (Shoes for Irish Team) T. O'Gorman (Caps for Irish Team) Bank of Ireland (Equipment for Irish Team) Titleist & Dunlops (Balls for Irish Teams)

3 3. CORPORATE MEMBERSHIP Mr. 0. 0hUiginn, Secretary to the Department of An Taoiseach, in his capacity as Chairman of the International Financial Services Centre Committee, has written formally to the Union seeking its assistance in encouraging Clubs, particularly in the Dublin Area, to make available corporate membership to overseas Financial Service Companies which have set up in the International Financial Services Centre in Dublin, He points out that one of the attractions of Dublin to these Companies is the amenities of a Capital City, including the golfing facilities. These Companies are aware of the difficulties of obtaining individual membership and have raised the question of the availability of corporate membership as exists in other Countries. It is envisaged that such membership would involve the payment of a capital sum for which the Company would have the use of the course, at specifically agreed times, for 2 or 3 Executives. They would not be entitled to individual membership, entry to competitons or to take part in the affairs of the Club, Mr. O'hUiginn is satisfied that it is extremely important, in Economic and Social Terms, that the Country continues to attract these important Companies and he believes that if corporate membership was available in Clubs in the Dublin Area it would be an enormous boost to the success of the International Financial Services Centre. In light of Mr. O'hUiginn's firm belief in the tremendous benefit which would accrue to the Country, the Union, in the best National Interests, suggests that Clubs might wish to actively pursue this concept on terms and conditions which would be a matter entirely for the individual Clubs to determine. 4 RULES OF GOLF The Rule governing grips was amended in 1984 and the R. & A. & U.S.G.A. gave a five year "period of grace" for 'illegal' grips to be phased out. This "period of grace" has now expired and as from 1st January 1990 the use of nonconforming grips will be a breach of the Rules of Golf. If you are in doubt about the legality of your grips please read page 82 of the 1988 Rules of Golf or check with your Pro. ELIGIBILITY DATES 1991 Your Union, through the medium of C.O.N.G.U., is exerting as much pressure as possible on the R. & A. and the E.G.A. for them to reach agreement on uniform eligibility dates for junior and boys events in ENTRY FORMS Entry forms for Irish Seniors Amateur Open Championship, Irish Close Championship, Irish Youths' Championship and Irish Boys Championships are availaole from your Club or Union Headquarters. CONGRATULATIONS TO: Pat Foley on being elected to the Executive Committee of the European Golf Association. TO: Those two well known Golf Club Secretary Persons Mary O'Brien (late Elm Park) and Stanley Adams (Edmondstown) who have announced their engagement. We wish them every happiness. The "Scrubber" from Killarney submitted the following anecdotes for publication. Many thanks. POOR SIGHT An elderly visiting golfer with poor sight had previously arranged a caddy with the caddy master. He was loosening out on the first tee when his seventy eight year old caddy arrived. "Good God", said the golfer, "you're older than I am but how's your sight?" "Excellent" replied the caddy. "Let's go so" said the 12 handicap golfer and away with the pair of them. The old fellow proceeded to deliver a grand show of pars for the first four holes but gave it holly on the par five fifth. It strayed a little so he anxiously asked the caddy, "Did you see that one?" "No problem" replied the caddy confidently. When they reached the area where the ball should be he asked the caddy "where is it?" "I don't know" said the caddy. "I thought you saw it" said the testy golfer. "I did, I did", said the caddy, "but I forget!" MIXED FOURSOMES She hits off ball lands behind machine shed. "Unplayable", says he. "No" she comments, "I'll open the front and back doors and you can play a low shot through". He hits a nice low one iron but unfortunately catches the frame of the front door, bounces off and hit yer wan on the head. She didn't survive so he's now a true golf widower. Months later, playing a mixed with his new girlfriend, he can't believe it! She hit off and the ball lands in almost the same spot. Upon her suggestion to open the doors and flake one through he replies, "no my little pet, last time I tried that it cost me two penalty shots!" Ouch! EPILOGUE The darkest hour they say is just before the dawn. To alleviate the depression of existing without golf I must in fairness state that the situation has its compensations. The Bad Back Club members life is devoid of the joys of clearing clogged drains, painting ceilings, trimming hedges, cutting grass, sweeping leaves, mixing concrete, changing wheels, drilling holes, hanging pictures, hoovering hallways, varnishing stairs, chopping wood, I could go on and on. Hmmm do you know what? When you think about it. Golf really is a crazy ole game. Think about it! If any "funny incidents" occur in your Club or in any Competition please send a precis of them to Union Headquarters for use in future Newsletters.
