2 osu men s golf review and Trent Leon Trent Leon preview & review For the Oklahoma State men s golf team, the season produced the peaks and valleys that often accompany a youthfilled roster. After losing four starters from the previous season, the Cowboys entered their third year under head coach Mike McGraw with a talented, but inexperienced lineup. Potential evidenced in the form of three team titles and three different players combining to win four individual crowns. OSU opened the fall season with a seventh-place finish at the Inverness Collegiate before posting the first of its five runner-up finishes on the year at the Ping/Golfweek Preview. The Preview also marked the highly anticipated debut of freshman. After helping the United States to victory at the Walker Cup in September, the Murrieta, Calif., native joined the Cowboys for their second event of the fall slate and made his presence known immediately with a fourth-place finish. Billed as the top incoming freshman in the country, proved to be as good as advertised for the Cowboys, earning firstteam All-America honors and the distinction of becoming the first freshman to claim the Ben Hogan Award. After his fourth-place showing at the Ping/Golfweek Preview, Fowler claimed his first collegiate victory at the Fighting Illini Invitational and led the Cowboys to their first team title in the process. Competing at historic Olympia Fields Country Club, Fowler s triumph was fueled by a 7-under 63, which matched the course record held by Vijay Singh. OSU s other top-10 performance was also delivered via a freshman as Kevin Tway finished in sixth place. Sophomore Trent Whitekiller narrowly missed his first career top 10 after tying for 12th place, but his contribution did provide a glimpse of things to come from the Sallisaw, Okla., native. The Cowboys followed up their victory with a fourth-place finish at the Isleworth-UCF Collegiate that included another top five from Fowler. Junior Trent Leon cracked the top 10 as well, finishing tied for seventh place. Among the season s valleys was an 0-2 showing at the Callaway Golf Collegiate Match Play Championship that included losses to Tennessee and Minnesota. However, the Cowboys once again got a solid performance from Whitekiller, who won both of his matches in the event. The Cowboys traveled south to Puerto Rico to open their spring slate and produced their second runner-up finish of the year. OSU placed three shots behind Alabama in the team race, while Fowler claimed the No. 2 spot in the individual race to lead the way once again. OSU s first bump in the road during the spring campaign came in Las Vegas at the Southern Highlands Collegiate. The event resulted in a ninth-place showing in the team standings for the Cowboys, but saw Fowler run his string of consecutive top 10s to five with a tie for seventh. A second-place finish at the U.S. Collegiate in their next start helped steer the Cowboys back in the right direction. The runnerup effort jump-started a stretch of five consecutive events in which the squad finished first or second. In his 30th career start, junior Trent Leon added his name to the lengthy list of Cowboys to win medalist honors during their career. The Dallas, Texas native broke through against a quality field at the U.S. Collegiate. Leon opened with a pair of 69s before closing with a 70 to finish one stroke clear of Fowler. A trip to Austin, Texas for the Morris Williams Intercollegiate followed and produced another runner-up finish for the Orange and Black. The Cowboys came in six shots off the pace of tournament host Texas, but once again got top-10 finishes from a OKLAHOMA STATE MEN S GOLF 33

3 OKLAHOMA STATE MEN S GOLF preview & review review (cont.) Mark Johnson The convincing win also helped the Cowboys maintain their stranglehold on the top spot in the league. OSU now owns six conference titles in the 12-year history of the league. Following his victory, Fowler was tabbed as the Big 12 Player of the Year, making him the eighth Cowboy to garner the honor. While the victory further cemented Fowler s place among college golf s elite, it was equally important for Tway. The runner-up performance signaled the Edmond, Okla., native s emergence as a prominent player and saw his early-season struggles come to an end. Tway made it two runner-ups in a row in the squad s next outing at The Maxwell. Tway was one of two Cowboys to finish in the top 10 at the event to help guide the squad to its seventh consecutive title in the event. Whitekiller joined his teammate with his best performance to date, tying for ninth. With team title No. 3 in hand, the focus shifted to the postseason and the NCAA Central Regional. The event produced OSU s final runner-up finish of the year as the Cowboys came in 10 shots behind Wake Forest at the Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio. More importantly, the tournament resulted in OSU earning its unprecedented 62nd-straight berth at the NCAA Championship. Individually, Tway rounded out the trio of OSU medalists on the year with his first career victory. Joining him in the top five was Leon, whose fifth-place tie marked his best finish since his victory earlier in the year. The Cowboys season culminated with a fourth-place showing at the NCAA Championship. Despite trailing three teams in the final standings, OSU came in just six shots behind UCLA for the top spot. pair of freshmen. Fowler tied fellow rookie Mark Johnson for eighth place. The finish for Johnson proved to be an impressive return to the lineup after a threetournament hiatus. As the season began to draw to a close, OSU finished in strong fashion with a pair of victories in its final four events of the season. The Cowboys remained in the Lone Star State for their next outing as they traveled to Trinity, Texas in search of their 51st conference title and second consecutive under McGraw. With the event being contested over 72 holes for the first time in its history, the Cowboys led wire-to-wire and cruised to a 20-shot victory. Individually, OSU was equally impressive as Fowler and Tway finished 1-2 while Johnson produced a career-best finish, tying for seventh. Fowler led the charge for OSU, tying for fourth place to end the year with 10 top 10s in 12 starts. The fourth-place finish in the collegiate level s biggest event served as a springboard to solidify his No. 1 ranking in the country. Whitekiller proved to be equally strong down the stretch, building on his first career top 10 at The Maxwell with a career-best performance. The sophomore lowered his score each day at the championship en route to a seventh-place finish while helping keep the Cowboys in contention for the team title. While last season did not result in OSU s perennial goal of a national championship, the foundation was laid for the Cowboys to once again be among the serious contenders for the 2009 national title. OSU will begin the year with one of its deepest rosters in recent history and will have its sights set firmly on achieving college golf s ultimate goal for the second time in four seasons under Mike McGraw. The head coach directed the Cowboys to their 10th NCAA title as a rookie head coach in Not only do they return their entire starting lineup from a squad that won three times and finished second on five occasions, they will once again welcome one of the nation s most talented recruiting classes to the mix. A year removed from adding two of the nation s top prospects in and Kevin Tway, McGraw and associate head coach Alan Bratton lured a quartet of top-flight prospects to Stillwater. Sean Einhaus, Morgan Hoffmann, Drew Page and Peter Uihlein will join a group of returners that registered four individual victories last season and produced four All-America selections. 34

4 Competition for the five spots in the starting lineup will be heightened with the infusion of young talent coupled with a core group of battle-tested veterans. The lineup will be headlined by one of the nation s top players in Fowler. The ultra-talented sophomore and classmate Kevin Tway have garnered the lion s share of attention since joining the program and continued their development with strong summers that included starts at the U.S. Open in June. The first-ever freshman to win the Ben Hogan Award as the nation s top player, Fowler has proven to be the squad s backbone with his consistent play. Last year, he opened the season with nine consecutive top-10 finishes and recorded a pair of victories while finishing as the top-ranked player in the country. Tway had a hand in the Cowboys late-season success. After posting back-to-back runner-up finishes, his first career victory came in the team s next outing at the NCAA Central Regional. With the continued development of his game, Tway should provide OSU with one of the top 1-2 combinations in the country. However, the talent is not limited to the sophomore duo. Trent Whitekiller will begin his sophomore campaign riding a wave of confidence that comes courtesy of strong close to his spring season. The Sallisaw, Okla., native posted top 10s in two of his last three starts, including a career-best showing at the NCAA Championship. Whitekiller parlayed that success into a pair of victories over the summer, undoubtedly boosting his confidence heading into the new school year. Michael Miller and Bernhard Neumann will both make their debuts for the Orange and Black this season after redshirting as true freshman a year ago. All four freshmen have compiled impressive credentials and will vie for playing time immediately. Einhaus has been a significant player at the national level in his native Germany, winning 13 national championships, while Hoffmann most recently proved his worth with a berth in the quarterfinals at the 2008 U.S. Amateur. Page enjoyed a successful prep career in North Carolina that included a successful run to the state team title. Uihlein has been a prominent figure on the junior circuit having twice been named the AJGA Player of the Year and will no doubt look to carry that success into the college arena. preview & review The schedule will once again see the Cowboys work their way through a challenging schedule that is comprised not only of formidable opponents, but some of the nation s premier venues. Senior Trent Leon, the lone remaining member of OSU s 2006 NCAA championship squad, will look to capitalize upon a spring campaign that saw him register his first collegiate victory at the U.S. Collegiate. Leon s postseason experience could prove invaluable in his final push for the national title. Rounding out the Cowboys senior tandem is Jon McLean, who will be among the most experienced players on the roster. The TCU transfer competed in six events for the Cowboys last season and has a collegiate victory to his credit. Sophomore Mark Johnson enters his second season continuing to improve and refine his game. As a freshman, the Tulsa, Okla., native quietly emerged last season and became a solid contributor to the lineup, producing a pair of top 10s in 10 starts. The Cowboys will open the fall campaign looking to defend their title at the Fighting Illini Invitational at historic Olympia Fields. OSU will close out the fall with trips to the Inverness Club and Isleworth Country Club for the Ping/Golfweek Preview and the Isleworth Invitational, respectively. Trips to Puerto Rico and Las Vegas kick off the spring slate. After competing in the Linger Longer Invitational, OSU will make its annual trek to Austin, Texas for the Morris Williams Intercollegiate. Stops at the U.S. Collegiate and Aggie Invitational will precede the squad s run at a third consecutive conference title when the Big 12 Championship makes its return to Prairie Dunes Country Club. With the change in the NCAA postseason format, the Cowboys run to the NCAA Championship could potentially run through its own backyard. OSU s own Karsten Creek will serve as one of six regional sites this season leading up to the NCAA Championship at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. The Cowboys last hosted a regional in 2001 and will be looking to extend their string of consecutive NCAA Championship appearances to an unprecedented 63 in row. OKLAHOMA STATE MEN S GOLF 35
