1 The Flagstick President s Message Rob Viebrock~ AHGC President Well spring is here, literally with a bang, as it is hailing along with thunder and lightning outside as I write this. However, looking at the 10-day I see we will be quickly marching into degree weather. Grasses are really starting to take off as the fairways have filled in along with the surrounding rough being a bit thicker. Kudos to Greg Bliek and staff for striking an excellent balance so as to not make the rough to penalizing during our tournaments. Additionally, they do attempt to mow the greens the mornings of tourney days in order to keep the poana grass from having too much effect on putts. All of this I like to mention, as it seems sometimes, it is taken for granted. The entire staff at Empire and the county always seems to go out of their way to make all of our tournaments extra special. On behalf of the board along with all of our members..a big thanks for all your efforts! Ancil Hoffman Golf Club ~ Carmichael,California May 2018 Inside this issue: President s Message Tournament Schedules 2 Board of Directors 2 Midweek and Weekend 3 Tournament Entry Forms 4&5 From the Club 6 From the Program Director 6 From the Handicapper 7 From the Vice President 8 We seem to be firing on all cylinders in both midweek and weekend tournaments. Participation levels are at near or full capacity, sometimes 2 weeks before a tournament. This makes for bigger prize payouts along with exciting finishes. However, with these increased levels, please be especially mindful of your and your groups pace of play. Overall AHGC membership levels seem to be tracking very closely to last year s level between overall members. I know this is far short of the good ol days of 1,200 + members, but, considering the overall local competition for players not to mention NCGA s eclub, we are doing well. Nonetheless, we want to begin brainstorming new ideas on how to increase levels to a much higher level. All ideas are on the table for discussion. Hopefully by the time of my next letter, I will be able to share some of the ideas we have in action. This brings me to a question I have for all of you. Have you ever thought about joining the board at Ancil? We are always searching for new prospective board members with different ideas. The board positions can be somewhat demanding at times, but, also very rewarding. Let us know. Even if you are unable to provide the time, your ideas and comments are always welcome. Thanks and see you at the next quarterly or tournament, whichever comes first. Hit em straight out there! Rob Viebrock AHGC President

3 Page 3 Midweek Tournament News Doug Olson Midweek Tournament Chairman Weekend Tournament News Matt Gilchrist Weekend Tournament Chair The first four midweek tournaments in 2018 had great turnouts, with 130 players in the January 11 Individual Stroke, 137 players in the February 8 Individual Stroke, 132 players in the March 8 Two Person Best Ball, and 139 players in the April 5 Individual Stroke. In addition, the midweek tournaments are now played from the combo tees for men. The January 11 flight winners were Vern Kemp, Joe Woelfle, Robert Reid, and Marc Cavros. The February 8 flight winners were Ross Raymond, Larry Orcutt, Ike Leitis, and Bruce Henline. The March 8 flight winners were the teams of Chuck Ashen/Harry Massingill and Robert Slockbower/Ken Henry. The April 5 flight winners were Ross Raymond, Mike Stone, Don Howell, and Brandon Lane. Congratulations to Mark Cavros, who won the Winter Series Championship, carding a net score of 201 ( ), based on the lowest three scores of the four tournaments from January through April. Mark won by five strokes over Donn Pintar and Ross Raymond, who tied for second with net scores of 206. There will again be a Summer Series Championship, including the midweek tournaments on May 31, June 21, July 19, and August 16. For both the Winter and Summer Series Championships, the player with the lowest aggregate net score for three of the four midweek tournaments will be awarded $250, second place $150, and third place $100 (no tiebreakers, prizes may be shared). Note that the May 3 Midweek Tournament will include the NCGA Senior Four-Ball Qualifier, but will not be included in either the Summer Series Championship or the Ancil Points competition. In aftermath of hole in one payouts to Greg Hovious and Don Howell in 2017, the midweek hole in one fund has steadily replenished to the current amount of $1526, going into the May 3 tournament. Accordingly, the jackpot amount has been reset to $1,500 until the next payout. On the financial side, the first four midweek tournaments in 2018 generated a net income from tournament fees totaling $10,080, while the corresponding pro shop payouts totaled $9,980. I want to thank all participants for making the Midweek Tournaments run smoothly. Please remember to enter on-line early, as typically the tournaments become full and registration ends 7-10 days beforehand. In addition, please note that there is a 48 hour cancellation policy that is in effect for all Midweek Tournaments. Players cancelling within the 48 hour period (starts on Tuesday at 7:30am) will automatically be assigned to the last tee group on the next entered tournament. Doug Olson Midweek Tournament Director Ancil Hoffman Golf Members, We've got four events in the books and tournament participation has continued to be well attended, please keep up the enthusiasm and be sure to let me know if there is anything else I can do to help keep the tournaments a success. Congratulations to Joe McQuaid, Kevin Thompson, Rick Doerr, Greg Garcia, Matt Jones and Brett Dodge for advancing on to our various NCGA qualifiers coming up! We are about ready to head into our heaving season with the President s Cup, Club Championships, and Team Match season. For those not familiar with the President Cup event, it is 2 days of individual stroke play and is considered an Ancil "major" which also comes with the largest purse of the year. Since this event is a major, there will be a 3 hole playoff for tie breaking purposes. I will be sending out a separate e- mail with details on this year s Club Championships since we are changing up the format in order to bolster participation. Many thanks go out to Matt Jones, Pat Harrold, and Rob Viebrock for their volunteer hours and allowing me to leave the course at a decent time! Lastly, in recent events, there has been an overwhelming desire to play early, unfortunately, when 75% of the field is requesting this time slot, it s difficult to make everyone happy. If you have circumstances that do require you to leave the course by a certain time, please let me know and I ll do my best to accommodate. Also, I will always do my best to ensure our fast players are out first in order to set a good pace for the rest of the field. Hit 'em straight, keep up the pace, and have fun. I think this is a great way to share stories, pictures, and humor. I also think it could be a way to fill out foursomes, find golf buddies, trade or sell golf clubs, and communicate Ancil Hoffman Golf Club events and activities through the Facebook Website. If you are not on Facebook yet, it s easy to sign-up. Just go to and join. AHGC, April was another successful quarterly meeting, the attendance was great, thanks to all that came. Congratulations to the seven winners of the raffle each has received $50.00 in scrip to the pro shop. The next quarterly meeting is Wednesday July 25 th, at 3:30pm and who knows you might be the next raffle winner so be sure to be there. Derek and the gang at the Main Event will be serving up dinner and drinks plus there will be a self-serve keg of beer so please drink responsibly. This is also our annual Putting Championship so it s never too early to start practicing! Thanks and we look forward to seeing you at the Main Event! 7 Page 7 From the Handicapper Jay McQuoid I would like to take this opportunity to introduce the new handicap committee. They are as follows: Patrick Harrold, Scott Bacon, Matt Gilchrist, Doug Olson, and Chuck Ashen. These before mentioned members of the AHGC will not necessarily have responsibility of the on going monthly duties of the Handicap Chair, but rather will offer their opinions of how the Handicap Chair should react to certain situations that may occur through out the year. I hope you join me in thanking them for their service to the AHGC. In closing I would like to thank all of you that post your golf scores religiously. It is important to the world of golf that you do this and continue to keep the integrity of the game we all love and the USGA Handicap system working as it should. For those that can find all sorts of reasons not to post their scores from time to time I urge to stop this fallacious thinking. Please post all scores. Even scores that you do not finish the round. If you play less than 13 holes post your nine hole score. If you play13 or more post a 18 hole score by adding your handicap to par for all holes not played. But, PLEASE POST. Jay McQuoid Handicap Chairman
8 Page 8 Introduction to Upcoming Rules Changes Patrick Harrold Starting January 1, 2019, the golfing community will see some major changes in the rules. These changes are part a major rewrite of the rules by the USGA as a way of modernizing rules for today s game, here is a link to all the rule changes for 2019: New 2019 Rule Changes Over the next couple of newsletters, I will highlight the higher impacting rules that could affect our tournaments. In addition to the new rules, the Board of Directors is also discussing some new local rules for our tournaments. The two most pressing local rules are: #1 Limiting the maximum score on any hole to double par. #2 Implementing a two-stroke penalty on lost balls or balls hit in out of bounds (OB). The first local rule is self-explanatory, the second is what I would like to explain. Both rules are design to improve pace of play. If a player hits a ball that is close to or OB and leaves the teeing area in search of the tee shot then this rule would apply, or if a player gets to the area their ball should be and the ball cannot be found then this rule applies. The player would estimate where the ball is lost or where it crossed the OB boundary, with compliance from their playing partners. The player would mark that spot, then will go to the fairway closest to that mark (of the hole they are playing), no closer to the hole, and mark another spot two club lengths into the fairway. The player may drop the ball anywhere in that area (again no closer to the hole), including the fairway, and take a two-stroke penalty playing from the new location. This is to prevent players looking for their ball for 3 minutes and then going all the way back to the tee box to hit again. The player has the option only at the tee box to re-tee a ball and hit with only a one-stroke penalty, once the player leaves the teeing area in search of the tee shot then will the rule be enforced. Again, the Board of Directors is currently discussing this local rule and would like your input before finalizing any decision on this situation. Patrick Harrold Vice President
