2 Overview of the Village of Pinehurst The Village of Pinehurst, located in an area known as "the Sandhills" in Moore County, is in south central North Carolina about 60 miles southwest of Raleigh, the state capital, and about 75 miles east of Charlotte. Although it was established in 1895, the Village did not become a municipality until James Walker Tufts, a resident of the Boston area, had amassed a considerable fortune as head of various enterprises, most notably the American Soda Fountain Company. In 1895, he made an arrangement to purchase about 598 acres of land for about $1.25 per acre to create a health resort in the Sandhills. Mr. Tufts wanted a "first rate" plan for his new resort and contacted a land planning firm in Brookline, Massachusetts that was headed by Frederick Law Olmstead, designer of Central Park in New York City and the Biltmore Estate in Asheville. In about three weeks time, the plan for the Village of Pinehurst was formed. Mr. Tufts then hired Donald Ross in 1900 to be responsible for development of golf. For many years, Pinehurst was a privately held resort under sole proprietorship of the Tufts family. In 1920, a corporate form of ownership was established when a charter for Pinehurst, Inc. was obtained. By the late 1960's the shareholders of Pinehurst, Inc. decided to sell the resort property to Diamondhead Corporation. Over the next decade, Diamondhead created about 7,000 lots or units for sale with membership rights to the Pinehurst resort facilities. Infrastructure to support these lots (roads, water, sewer, etc.) was also constructed at this time. In 1980, pursuant to an Order of Incorporation, the Village of Pinehurst became an incorporated municipality. Since then ownership of the resort property has changed hands several times and the world-renowned golf courses have been developed and expanded under each owner. In 1996, The Village of Pinehurst and Pinehurst Resort had the distinct pleasure of being given National Landmark status for their historical, significant role in U.S. golf history. Based on the 2000 Census, the population within the corporate limits of the Village (14.3 square miles) has increased by an astonishing 91% since Pinehurst enjoys international recognition as a golf resort, with the well-known Pinehurst Resort located in the heart of the Village. There are more than 40 golf courses within minutes of Pinehurst with the list of designers being a Who's Who of golf course design.
3 Overview of the Parks and Recreation Department The Pinehurst Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of programs geared towards all ages from children to senior adults. Programs vary from organized athletic leagues, arts and crafts classes, exercise classes, special events, and festivals. Programs are designed with the residents of Pinehurst in mind, but are open to all Moore County residents. The department s facilities include Cannon Park, Rassie Wicker Park, West Pinehurst Community Park, Pinehurst Greenway System, Arboretum, Fair Barn and the Pinehurst Harness Track. Winner of the Best Park of Moore County, Cannon Park is a 15 acre facility with 2 baseball/softball fields, and a small practice soccer field with restroom facilities. Besides ball fields, Cannon Park has a ¼ mile walking trail and is home to Camelot Playground, a unique Medieval castle playground with swings, shaded seating, and a fenced in perimeter. Rassie Wicker Park, site of the Village Hall, Police Station and Fire Station is developed as a community park. Amenities available within the 103 acre facility include a soccer field, in-line hockey rink, tennis courts, bocce ball courts, shuffleboard courts, playground, paved walking trails, brick sidewalks, expanded trail system and concession stand/restroom facility. Rassie Wicker Park is also home to the 33 acre Arboretum which was developed by the Village Heritage Foundation. The Magnolia Lawn, Meadow Lawn and Pergola Garden may also be reserved for weddings, receptions, concerts and other events. Also currently developed in Rassie Wicker Park are 3 miles of walking trails, a paved loop and sidewalks with additional sections planned. A portion of the Greenway Trail System also runs through the park from Hwy 211 to the site of the Arboretum. The Pinehurst Greenway System currently has 6.8 miles of trail completed out of a total of 24 miles planned in the Greenway Master Plan. The Fair Barn is the oldest surviving early twentieth-century fair exhibition hall in North Carolina. It was built in 1917 for use as the Sandhills Fair, one of the major country fairs in the Southeast from 1915 through Restored in 2002, The Fair Barn is now a multi-purpose community gathering place. The Fair Barn has been the site of exhibitions, wedding ceremonies and receptions, private parties, auctions, business seminars, and community concerts and performances. The Pinehurst Harness Track is a 111-acre equestrian facility that has been a winter training center for standardbred horses since The grounds consist of three training tracks and several center aisle barns with approximately 300 stalls, as well as several paddocks. Champion trotters and pacers train on either the 1/2 mile sand/clay track, the 5/8 mile sand/jog track, or the 1 mile clay track, all of which serve as an ideal winter training facility. The tracks are also available for rent when training is not taking place. Typical events include horse shows, car shows, dog shows, and rugby matches.
4 The Village of Pinehurst Parks and Recreation Department Internship Program Department Goals for Internship: Pinehurst Parks and Recreation Department has designed and implemented an internship program that provides students with a well-rounded experience which introduces them to all aspects of a diverse and comprehensive parks and recreation program. This provides the student with an opportunity to put what they have learned, to work. It is a "hands on" experience that reflects what park and recreation professionals do on the job to ensure the necessary and enhanced services to the community. Internship Program Goals: To apply academic and practical experience to a hands-on, real life experience. To problem solve in a work environment. To exchange ideas and network with professionals in the field. To gain pride and appreciation in the field. To gain competent professional skills. Guidelines for Internship: The Department only provides internships to students in a Parks and Recreation, Leisure Studies, or related curriculum from an accredited college or university. Internships will be handled in the same manner as a job application. This includes a drug screening and criminal background check for all interns.
