5 Tennis is trending up As of 2015, there were 17.9 million tennis players in the U.S. up 1 percent from 2013 Core players (play 10+ times/year) aged 55-plus increased 1 percent 14.6 million Americans indicate an interest in playing tennis Research shows there s another 12 million Americans who consider themselves tennis players, but haven t played in the last year Physical Activity Council 2015 Participation Study

6 Tennis is trending up Instead of bridge or afternoon tea, it is now hiking, canoeing, swimming, and tennis, says David Marsden, chairman of the American Sports Builders Association, the trade association for sports facility contractors, designers and suppliers. Marsden says that in his Massachusetts-based firm, Boston Tennis Court Construction, Much of our new court construction is geared to that age group, one that is interested in good health, competition and social events perfect for tennis. The older tennis population isn t a fluke it s a fact. According to Schobel, There are national age-group championships for players from 30 to 90 for the men, in fiveyear increments, and women from 30 to 85.

7 Future of Tennis? Other communities are investing in tennis facilities. Sun City 10 new courts/new complex with post-tension concrete Sun City Grand 4 courts renovated with post-tension concrete Surprise Tennis Complex 25 courts with post-tension concrete Phoenix Tennis Center 25 courts renovated with post-tension concrete Kiwanis Tennis Center renovating 15 pro bounce courts with post-tension concrete

8 What about us? Tennis membership has been steady over the past five years and has increased for 2015 with expected increases for Current membership is 546. Court usage has increased. Non-prime time usage has increased due to tennis club activities: team tennis, mixers, league play, tournaments and other special events. Tennis was eliminated at Palm Ridge when six tennis courts were converted to pickleball with intent to move all pickleball to Palm Ridge.

16 Sun City In 2015 the Bell Center was completed with a $2 million renovation and addition of two courts (total of 10 courts at one location). Six tennis courts at other sites

19 Sun City Grand In 2013 with the renovation of the last four tennis courts, the Adobe renovation was complete.

20 Surprise Tennis Center

21 Phoenix Tennis Center In 2015, Phoenix Tennis Center just completed a $4 million renovation of 25 courts plus three practice courts.

22 Let s look at other amenities the Association has funded for Recreation: Renovation of the RHJ Library Renovation of the Village Store Renovation of the Lecture Hall Renovation of the RHJ Fitness Center, and Pool Renovation of the Beardsley Fitness Center Replinthed the Lawn Bowls Courts Recovered Greens at Mini Golf Removed and replaced playground to Beardsley Park All these amenities are used by clubs and by residents of Sun City West as is the Tennis Facility.

23 Let s look at other amenities the Association has funded for Recreation: New carpet at the Stardust Theater. New seats at the Stardust Theater. New sound system in the Stardust Theater. Recovering of 2,000 chairs for both Palm Ridge Summit Hall and RH Johnson Social Hall Renovated Bocce Courts New Pavilion at Beardsley Park Renovated cabinetry at Beardsley Card Rooms Renovated Shuffleboard Room for greater use All these amenities are used by clubs and by residents of Sun City West as is the Tennis Facility.

24 Moving forward. Tennis the 7 th largest club. Membership is at 546 It is our fiduciary responsibility to maintain a sustainable facility Post-tension concrete has a life expectancy of over 30 years This is a solution that will make the RH Johnson Tennis Center a premiere facility once more
