3 UNC FINLEY GOLF COURSE: CAROLINA WOMEN S GOLF UNC Finley Golf Course is once again one of the premier college facilities in the nation. Traditionally recognized as one of the most beautiful courses in the southeast, Finley recently received a facelift that makes it one of the most challenging as well. Internationally renowned golf course designer Tom Fazio designed the new UNC Finley Golf Course. It features a completely different layout, yet some of the best aspects of the old course were retained. The new course features a par 72 layout with five sets of tees ranging from 4,981 yards from the forward tees to 7,187 yards from the championship markers, thus presenting a stiff challenge to the best golfers while still remaining accessible to those of all skill levels. Tees, greens and fairways were built and planted to the highest standard, while a state-of-the-art irrigation system and exceptional drainage maintains the quality of the course. In addition, the practice range was expanded and rebuilt and the clubhouse and snack shop underwent extensive renovations. Carolina s golf teams also have a new team facility, the Chapman Golf Center which opened in November The 4,500-squarefoot facility houses offices for the men s and women s golf coaches, men s and women s locker rooms, a team meeting room and a reception area. A Hall of Honor which honors former Carolina players and coaches is planned for the future. There is also a climate controlled individual teaching area with two hitting bays and a state-of-the-art teaching system. At the far end of the range adjacent to the team facility is the Williamson Golf Team Practice Facility used exclusively by the men's and women s golf teams. In addition to a practice range, there are putting and chipping greens and bunkers so the teams can hone their short games. UNC Finley Golf Course, originally designed by George Cobb and built by Raleigh businessman A. E. Finley, opened in Three holes were added in the early 1980s, also designed by Cobb, and the clubhouse underwent renovations in Over the years, Finley has been host to many collegiate, high school and amateur competitions. Finley also plays host to the annual A. E. Finley Executive Cup Tournament and to championships conducted by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association. UNC Finley Golf Course is located off Highway 54 in Chapel Hill. It is frequented by Carolina students, faculty and staff as well as many alumni of the University. 4 CAROLINA WOMEN S GOLF: PREVIEW Two years ago, the Carolina women s golf team boasted two of the nation s 12 All-America selections and took home two tournament championships. After a season that provided a lot of experience and learning, head coach Sally Austin, now in her 13th year at the helm, thinks returning to that success is right around the corner. We are still a young team, but a talented team, says Austin. Katie Miller and Ann Laney are each capable of being All-America. I just want everyone to keep improving. Miller, a junior from Jeannette, Pa., and Laney, a sophomore from Charlotte, N.C., were the most consistent and strongest players during the campaign with one of the two leading the team in eight of Carolina s nine tournaments. Miller led the Tar Heels in scoring average during both the fall and spring seasons and was named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference team. However, it was an injury keeping her from competing in the ACC Championship that added a little tarnish to an otherwise outstanding year. Katie was very disappointed with the way last year ended, says Austin. But she is extremely competitive and there is not a better ball-striker out there. She is as steady as anyone on our team and we will certainly look to her for leadership. Despite not having Miller to join her for all of last season s ACC Championship, Laney overcame the pressure of playing in her first conference championship and playing on her home course, to fire the best score of any Tar Heel and finish sixth in the event. Ann is a super competitor and she was able to handle the pressure of having the ACCs on her home course by playing three gutsy, determined, and well-played rounds of golf, Austin noted. With Miller and Laney, Coach Austin and the Tar Heels have two players who will challenge for top-five finishes in the conference and who will fill two of the five spots in the starting lineup week in and week out. For the other three positions in the lineup, Carolina will have a much more experienced and deeper pool of players to pull from in The competition for spots in the starting lineup will be strong every week, Austin comments. We have so many good players. But golf is not a difficult sport to make those choices. The numbers are right in front of you. We are going to have the best golfers out there each time. Within the race for spots in the starting lineup, there is a mix of returning veterans and incoming freshmen. Seniors Romi Irons and Beth Marushak and junior Shannon Boyle are three of the most experienced players on the team and all have had their share of success in the past. Marushak, a native of Northampton, Pa., ranked third on the team in scoring Beth Marushak looks to have an outstanding senior season. Kneeling left to right: Lauren Hunt, Head Coach Sally Austin, Assistant Coach Patricia Martinson and Laura Caniff. We will look to our junior and senior class for leadership, says Austin. They will be key in having a different attitude this season. They really want to make it a better season than last year. Sophomore Laura Caniff also began to separate herself from the pack towards the end of her freshman term. The Russell, Ky. native was the only Tar Heel outside of Miller and Laney to lead the team during a tournament after firing three rounds in the 70s to finish in a tie for 15th place during the ACC/SEC Challenge in Destin, Fla. She also posted a top-20 finish in the end-of-season ACC Championship. With another year of experience, she will be in line for even more of that success. Laura is one of our most consistent players, Austin says. She is super calm. I can never tell if she is coming off a birdie or coming off a bogey; she always acts the same. Nobody works harder at their game than she. Austin can also count on some strong contributions from a stellar recruiting class. Lauren Hunt, from Little River, S.C., Sydney Crane from Jamestown, N.C., and Catherine Hofmann, from Evansville, Ind., all have impressive prep resumes that could translate into major college success. All three of our freshmen have done a great job of listening and learning from the rest of the team, says Austin. Lauren Hunt, especially, puts a lot of pressure on herself to play well. As she gets more experienced she will better handle that pressure and will be a contributor to our team. In addition to that crop of players, Carolina also has a pair of returning walk-ons in Colette Lowe of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., and Brittany Walker of Mocksville, N.C. Each player experienced some tournament action in their first year with the Tar Heels. Lowe even played in the ACC Championship and was one of three Tar Heels to break 80 during a round at the tournament. Both Colette and Brittany are improving with more experience, expresses Austin. They have a great work ethic and have both put in a lot of time over the summer. Once again, Carolina will play in a wide range of tournaments against the premier college teams in the country. They will make a trip to Tennessee to conclude their fall schedule with the Mercedes Benz Collegiate Championship and will also travel to Louisiana and Puerto Rico during the spring. We have a really great schedule this season. There is a fabulous field coming into Chapel Hill for our own tournament. The team is really looking forward to our trip to Puerto Rico, says Austin. Duke is once again the favorite in the ACC coming off their national championship victory in , but the remainder of the conference and its order of finish is certainly up in the air. I think a top-two finish in the ACC is our goal. We can do it, proclaims Austin. If we keep improving we can even hang with [Duke]. I think we are a top-20, top-15 team in the country and our other goal is to finish that way in the NCAA Championship. Katie Miller, an All-ACC performer last year, should be one of the top collegiate players this year.

5 LADY TAR HEEL INVITATIONAL: CAROLINA WOMEN S GOLF One of the top collegiate women's golf tournaments in the nation, the Lady Tar Heel Invitational, is an annual event that takes place each fall at UNC's Finley Golf Course. Since its inception in 1976, the tournament has brought some of the nation's premier women's golf programs to Chapel Hill to compete in the three-day intercollegiate event. For five years ( ), the event was known as the Franklin Street Partners Invitational. The women s golf program is sincerely appreciative of Franklin Street Partners continued support and superb sponsorship during those years. Carolina got the tournament off to a roaring start by winning the inaugural Lady Tar Heel Invitational in Former Carolina Coach Dot Gunnells' squads captured five Tar Heel championships in 1976, 1979, 1985, 1991 and Duke won last year's event with an 865 team total while Auburn s Maria Martinez captured individual medalist honors with a 212 total. The Lady Tar Heel Invitational will be played at UNC Finley Golf Course on October 7-9. Finley, designed by internationally renowned architect Tom Fazio, features a par 72, 6,285-yard layout. The Tar Heels would like to thank the UNC Finley Golf Course staff, especially Golf Course Superintendent Ross Fowler and Director of Golf Johnny Cake. The Tar Heels would also like to thank the steering commitee of this year's tournament, tournament director Ellen Culler, Michael Beale of the sports marketing office and Kathy Duffy of UNC Finley Golf Course. In addition to host North Carolina, this year s participants include Auburn, Duke, Florida State, Kentucky, LSU, NC State, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Texas A&M, Tulsa, Vanderbilt, Virginia and Wake Forest. 11 HEAD COACH SALLY AUSTIN: CAROLINA WOMEN S GOLF As a member of the first varsity team at the University of North Carolina in 1974, Sally Austin had already established herself as one of the founding figures of Tar Heel women s golf as an undergraduate. Entering her 13th year as the head coach at Carolina, Austin is well on her way toward continuing the Tar Heel women s golf legacy and making its third decade of existence among the finest in the program s history. In Austin s 12 seasons as head coach, Carolina has finished in the top 25 at the NCAA Championships five times. The Tar Heels have won six tournament titles with Austin at the helm. Also, five players have captured 12 individual championships while under Austin s tutelage. Austin has coached four All-Americas who have been named to the team six times and six All-ACC performers named to the team on 12 occasions. In addition, one of her players, Marcy Newton, was selected ACC Rookie of the Year in In , Carolina was led by Katie Miller who was selected to the All-ACC team. The Tar Heels tied for 15th place at the NCAA Championship and were led by a pair of first-team All- Americas Meaghan Francella and Ashley Prange. Carolina finished in 13th place at the NCAA Championship and junior Meaghan Francella captured the ACC Individual Championship. In , the Tar Heels finished 16th at the NCAA East Regional; while in Carolina tied for 15th place at the NCAA East Regional, which was played in Chapel Hill. In , Carolina finished 17th at the NCAA East Regional and missed the cut for the NCAAs. However, senior Marcy Newton, an All-ACC performer, honorable mention All-America and later U.S. Women s Amateur champion, advanced as an individual participant. In , the Tar Heels tied for ninth at the NCAA East Regional, barely missing the cut for the NCAA Championship. The 15th-place finish in marked UNC s seventh top-25 finish in 10 years. The 1997 team finished third at the ACC Tournament and tied for 10th at the NCAA East Regional, missing the cut for NCAAs. The 1996 squad also missed the cut for NCAAs as Carolina finished 12th at the NCAA East Regional and third at the ACC Championship. The 1995 team finished eighth at the NCAA Championship while the 94 squad tied for 16th. A native of Raeford, N.C., Austin took over head coaching duties of the women s golf team after the season. Austin replaced long-time Tar Heel coach Dot Gunnells after serving as an assistant to Gunnells since In addition to her tenure as assistant coach, Austin was a member of the Tar Heels first varsity program in Her father played an instrumental role in helping pioneer that first team. Before his daughter entered UNC, Jake Coach Austin and junior Shannon Boyle Coach Austin working with freshman Sydney Crane. A u s t i n approached then athletic director Homer Rice about starting a team. Rice seemed receptive to the idea, and upon Austin s arrival, sent out a recruiting notice to students who might be interested in playing. Three other students besides Austin responded to Rice s request. One of those who responded was Mindy Moore, a future president of the LPGA. Moore and Austin played together for four years from the team s inception until graduation. Austin captured the UNC-CH Invitational individual title. By the time the two were seniors, they had led the team to a spot as one of the top 20 teams in the country. They accomplished this feat with Coach Gunnells at the helm. Upon graduation from North Carolina in 1977 with a bachelor of science degree in business administration, Austin continued her pursuit of golf. Austin has been a golf instructor at the Pine Needles Schools in Pinehurst since 1978, where she has worked under the supervision of Peggy Kirk Bell. She also was a golf instructor from at the Ben Sutton Golf Schools and from at the Craft-Zavichas Schools. Austin holds an LPGA Class A Teaching Certification.
